A Review of Degradation Behavior and Modeling of Capacitors

This paper firstly reviews the failure causes, modes and mechanisms of two major types of capacitors used in power electronic systems - metallized film capacitors and electrolytic capacitors. The degradation modeling related to these capacitors is then presented. Both physics-of-failure and data-driven degradation models for reliability and lifetime estimation are discussed. Based on the exhaustive literature review on degradation modeling of capacitors, we provide a critical assessment and future research directions.

Analytical Expression for DC Link Capacitor Current in a Cascaded H-Bridge Multi-Level Active Front-End Converter

Medium-voltage grid-tied systems often use a cascaded H-bridge multi-level active front-end. In this converter, dc link bus capacitors play an important role in stabilizing the converter and enabling both active and reactive power injections. The present work provides analytical expressions for the capacitor current, which are essential for optimizing system design (especially capacitor size vs. lifetime). Then, the expression is incorporated into the grid connected bidirectional power system model. Consequently, this work contributes to the guiding principles to choose accurate dc link capacitor ratings against grid-side power delivery requirements. The analytical results have been validated with detailed simulations and hardware results.

Transient pulse‐based impedance characterisation of DC‐link capacitor for EV systems

In this study, a method for impedance characterisation of DC‐link capacitors based on transient pulse analysis is proposed. The fundamentals of the concept are presented and design considerations are discussed. The functionality of the proposed approach is supported by SPICE simulation with two different commercial capacitors from different manufacturers and validated with experimental results. Experimental results for equivalent series resistance, equivalent series inductance (ESL) and capacitance estimation are presented for commercial DC‐link capacitors and compared with component analyser results. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method is a promising candidate for capacitance and ESL estimation of capacitors in EV traction systems.

Capacitive deionization charge transfer from one capacitor simultaneously to multiple capacitors

An energy transfer system is disclosed which has a controller, a first capacitor acting as a first electrode, a second capacitor acting as a second electrode, a first inductor for storing energy received from the first capacitor, and transferring the stored energy to the second capacitor, and a first plurality of electronic switches. The first plurality of electronic switches may be controlled by the controller to control a transfer of energy from the first capacitor to the first inductor, and from the first inductor to the first capacitor. An additional energy transfer subsystem may be included which has a second inductor for receiving energy from the first capacitor while the first inductor is transferring the stored energy to the second capacitor.

High-frequency direct current bulk capacitors with interleaved busbar packages

Presented are electrical capacitors with interleaved busbar architectures, methods for making/operating such capacitors, and electric-drive vehicles equipped with such capacitors. A bulk capacitor includes multiple capacitor devices disposed within an outer housing and operable to modify electric current transmitted between a power source and an electrical load. An interleaved busbar package is interposed between the capacitor devices and outer housing. The interleaved busbar package includes a first busbar plate that electrically connects to first terminals of the capacitor devices and defines a busbar pocket. A second busbar plate is seated within the busbar pocket and electrically connects to second terminals of the capacitor devices. The second busbar plate includes a capacitor basin that seats therein the capacitor devices. An isolator sheet is interleaved between and electrically insulates the first and second busbar plates. The capacitor devices and interleaved busbar package may be partially submerged in an epoxy endfill composition.

Stability Considerations for Virtual Capacitor Control in Constant Power DC Loads

In a DC grid, constant power loads (CPLs) necessitate a large bus capacitor to prevent negative impedance instability. Some of the capacitance can be realized virtually through CPL control to reduce the bus capacitor size. Here, this paper analytically studies system stability with virtual capacitor control. We demonstrate that the effectiveness of virtual capacitor control is highly sensitive to the implementation of the derivative action required to emulate the capacitor. For the first time, we theoretically demonstrate that a virtual capacitor can stabilize the system without any physical bus capacitor, provided that a set of analytically derived conditions are met. However, this stabilization is not achievable in practice due to the influence of non-idealities. In an example system requiring a $14$ mF capacitor to stably support the CPL, we show that stability can be achieved through virtual capacitor control, using only a 2 mF physical capacitor to account for the switching ripple non-idealities. Hardware-in-the-loop tests verify the analysis.

Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor Vulnerability Evaluation in DC Power Supplies at the Spallation Neutron Source

The service life of electrolytic capacitors is a concern for long-term reliable operation of power supplies. The Power Conversion Group at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) facility of Oak Ridge National Laboratory is responsible for more than 500 power supplies with over 1000 electrolytic capacitors installed in these power supplies. Most of the electrolytic capacitors have been in operation since 2007 and are either well over or close to the manufacturer provided lifetime. This paper addresses this vulnerability to ensure continued reliable operation of the SNS. The power supply circuit is simulated in a MATLAB/Simulink environment to quantify the capacitor ripple current and operating voltage. Combined with manufacturer data, this information is used to estimate capacitor lifetime. Utilizing the simulation results and lifetime projections of the capacitors, capacitor replacements for the power supplies is prioritized. To assess end-of-life, the ambient temperature and ripple current of the capacitor is used. Based on the manufacturer's data and scientific literature review, capacitor end-of-life is established. The results of the simulations and analysis is presented. Data on the highest priority supplies will also be presented, and statistics on the capacitor performance, reliability and remaining lifetime will be shown.
