Approximate analysis of frequency-shift keyed telemetry system with uncertainty in carrier frequency
Enhanced radio frequency carrier margin improvement for arrayed receiving systems for coherent reception of phase modulated signals with residual carrier provides a significant reduction in carrier loop phase noise and an increase in the signal to noise ratio in the RF carrier tracking loop with an attendant in telemetry radio loss. A significant increase in doppler frequency rate capability is also realized relative to operating at a narrower tracking loop bandwidth to obtain the same carrier sensitivity improvement. These performance characteristics are examined for an array of two receiving sysems with equal apertures and statistically independent prediction noise.

The definition of pulse modulated carrier frequency stability and timing jitter as well as the configuration and synchronous acquisition measurement method of its measurement system. Frequency stability of the pulse modulated carrier is measured with a discrimination technique. The pulse modulated carrier under testing is mixed with a reference frequency synthesizer. A delay line is used to convert the frequency fluctuation mixed IF signal to the voltage fluctuation. The system has the capability to make the phase noise measurement of two port devices on a pulsed carrier using a phase bridge. The noise voltage mentioned above is applied to the data acquisition and processing unit by PC to realize stability measurement. The data acquisition is in the form of pulse synchronization so that the measurement system accuracy is increased. The pulse width is more than 0.3 microseconds. The phase fluctuation variance, sigma, is less than 0.017. The time interval measuring system with high resolution is used to make interpulse timing and pulse width jitters automatic measurement. The pulse width is less than 0.2 ns. The resolution is 0.1 ns. The system is successfully applied to radar measurement.
Radio frequency arraying of several receiving systems provides signal-to-noise ratio improvement relative to a single receiving system. This report considers radio frequency carrier arraying which provides near maximum signal-to-noise ratio improvement for carrier reception and demodulation.
A method for increasing the sensitivity for radio frequency reception is described. Receiving systems or stations are arrayed in such a manner as to provide signal to noise ratio improvement relative to a single receiving system or station. Radio frequency carrier arraying for high rate telemetry that provides signal to noise ratio improvement for RF carrier reception and demodulation is discussed.
Enhanced radio frequency carrier margin improvement for arrayed receiving systems for coherent reception which provides a significant carrier sensitivity improvement with a resultant decrease in telemetry radio loss due to reduction in rms phase noise at low carrier margins is discussed. A significant increase in doppler rate capability is realized relative to that obtained by switching to a narrower tracking loop bandwidth to obtain the same carrier sensitivity improvement. The situation for arrayed receiving systems with unequal apertures and statisically independent predetection noise is examined.
A circular grating is photographed through a phase object which deforms the image of the grating lines. By superimposing these deformed lines with a master grating on photographic film, moire patterns are observed. These patterns are interpreted as fringes of constant radial derivative.

Signal to noise ratio improvement realized by arraying receiving systems or stations for coherent reception is reduced when some portion of the predetection noise is coherent in the array. This effect for arrayed receiving systems with unequal apertures including expected performance for selected planets of the solar system within the array beamwidth is examined.
As the Galileo probe relay radio link (RRL) signal propagates outward through the Jovian atmosphere, the atmosphere will manifest itself in two ways. First, the geometric path length of the signal is increased, resulting in a small change of the RRL signal departure angle from the proble (transmitter). Secondly, the velocity of the signal is decreased. For a spherical, static atmosphere with a known profile of refractivity versus altitude the effects of refraction on the RRL frequency can be found using a variation of standard ray-tracing techniques, whereby the ray departure angle is found by an iterative process. From the dispersive characteristics of a mixture of hydrogen and helium with trace amounts of methane and ammonia a simple model of the Jovian atmosphere is constructed assuming spherical symmetry and uniform mixing. The contribution to the RRL Doppler frequency arising from refraction is calculated, and its effect on the Doppler wind measurements is discussed.
A sequential filter is presented for estimating the center of mass (CM) of a spinning spacecraft using Doppler shift data from a set of onboard Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers. The advantage of the proposed method is that it is passive and can be run continuously in the background without using commanded thruster firings to excite spacecraft dynamical motion for observability. The NASA Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission is used as a test case for the CM estimator. The four MMS spacecraft carry star cameras for accurate attitude and spin rate estimation. The angle between the spacecraft nominal spin axis (for MMS this is the geometric body Z-axis) and the major principal axis of inertia is called the coning angle. The transverse components of the estimated rate provide a direct measure of the coning angle. The coning angle has been seen to shift slightly after every orbit and attitude maneuver. This change is attributed to a small asymmetry in the fuel distribution that changes with each burn. This paper shows a correlation between the apparent mass asymmetry deduced from the variations in the coning angle and the CM estimates made using the GPS Doppler data. The consistency between the changes in the coning angle and the CM provides validation of the proposed GPS Doppler method for estimation of the CM on spinning spacecraft.

Ground-probing radar systems featuring medium-frequency carrier signals phase-modulated by binary pseudonoise codes have been proposed. These systems would be used to locate and detect movements of subterranean surfaces; the primary intended application is in warning of the movement of underground water toward oil-well intake ports in time to shut down those ports to avoid pumping of water. Other potential applications include oil-well logging and monitoring of underground reservoirs. A typical prior georadar system operates at a carrier frequency of at least 50 MHz in order to provide useable range resolution. This frequency is too high for adequate penetration of many underground layers of interest. On the other hand, if the carrier frequency were to be reduced greatly to increase penetration, then bandwidth and thus range resolution would also have to be reduced, thereby rendering the system less useful. The proposed medium-frequency pseudonoise georadar systems would offer the advantage of greater penetration at lower carrier frequencies, but without the loss of resolution that would be incurred by operating typical prior georadar systems at lower frequencies.
Low-frequency synthesizer developed to provide low-frequency waveform by synthesis from high-frequency power system. Waveform assembled by allowing conduction of discrete half cycles of high-frequency carrier. Frequency of synthesized wave controlled by pulse pattern. By controlling relationship between slip and stator frequencies, one operates induction motor either as motor or generator. Such bidirectional energy transducer used as starter/generator for engine, or as servo-mechanism for control of acceleration and deceleration. Other advantages include operation under controlled voltage-to-frequency ratios to maintain high-efficiency and high power factor, and no reflection of low-frequency noise into 20-kHz distribution bus.
Two different carrier frequencies modulated by a reference frequency are transmitted to each receiver to be synchronized therewith. Each receiver responds to local phase differences between the two received signals to correct the phase of one of them so as to maintain the corrected signal as a reliable synchronization reference.
A sensor network may be configured to operate in extreme temperature environments. A sensor may be configured to generate a frequency carrier, and transmit the frequency carrier to a node. The node may be configured to amplitude modulate the frequency carrier, and transmit the amplitude modulated frequency carrier to a receiver.
