The Center for Aviation Systems Reliability (FAA-CASR), a part of the Institute for Physical Research and Technology at Iowa State University, began operation in the Fall of 1990 with funding from the FAA. The mission of the FAA-CASR is to develop quantitative nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods for aircraft structures and materials including prototype instrumentation, software, techniques, and procedures and to develop and maintain comprehensive education and training programs in aviation specific inspection procedures and practices. To accomplish this mission, FAA-CASR brings together resources from universities, government, and industry to develop a comprehensive approach to problems specific to the aviation industry. The problem areas are targeted by the FAA, aviation manufacturers, the airline industry and other members of the aviation business community. This consortium approach ensures that the focus of the efforts is on relevant problems and also facilitates effective transfer of the results to industry.
Computer Aided Software Reliability Estimation (CASRE) computer program developed for use in measuring reliability of other software. Easier for non-specialists in reliability to use than many other currently available programs developed for same purpose. CASRE incorporates mathematical modeling capabilities of public-domain Statistical Modeling and Estimation of Reliability Functions for Software (SMERFS) computer program and runs in Windows software environment. Provides menu-driven command interface; enabling and disabling of menu options guides user through (1) selection of set of failure data, (2) execution of mathematical model, and (3) analysis of results from model. Written in C language.
An electron beam flash evaporation technique is described which reproduces the stoichiometry of superconducting YBa(2)Cu(3)O(x) (123), Bi(2)CaSr(2)Cu(2)O(y) (2122), and Bi(2)Ca(2)Sr(2)Cu(3)O(z) (2223) source powders. Films of each material deposited with this technique exhibit zero resistance temperatures of 78 K or above when furnace annealed; 75 K zero temperatures are obtained for 123 films in situ annealed with atomic oxygen at 775 C. Transport critical current densities are 10,000 A/sq cm in 25-micron stripes patterned from 123 films, and 60,000 A/sq cm in 1-mm stripes of 2122 and 2223 films using a 1-microV/mm measurement criteria. Typical normal state resistivities are 700 micro-ohm cm for 2122 and 2223 films and 5 micro-ohm cm for 123 films. The 2122 films are highly textured with the c axis normal to the substrate. All results are for films deposited on MgO.
Activities of the Computer Software Management and Information Center (COSMIC) are summarized for the month of April 1994. Tables showing the current inventory of programs available from COSMIC are presented and program processing and evaluation activities are summarized. Five articles were prepared for publication in the NASA Tech Brief Journal. These articles (included in this report) describe the following software items: GAP 1.0 - Groove Analysis Program, Version 1.0; SUBTRANS - Subband/Transform MATLAB Functions for Image Processing; CSDM - COLD-SAT Dynamic Model; CASRE - Computer Aided Software Reliability Estimation; and XOPPS - OEL Project Planner/Scheduler Tool. Activities in the areas of marketing, customer service, benefits identification, maintenance and support, and disseminations are also described along with a budget summary.
