LGSOWG CCT format CCB document: The standard CCT family of tape formats

The tape format standardization approach recommended by the committee on CCT standardization is described and defined. All rules and conventions required to employ the superstructure approach to the CCT family of tape formats are presented for users of remote sensing data and producer of user tapes and the superstructure records are specified. The standard for future tape format design is presented as a guide to designing data records of a particular tape format. An example is provided showing how to incorporate the superstructure into an already established tape format.

Persistent Current Simulation for CCT Testing Magnet Used in EIC

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a powerful new facility to be built in the United States at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory in collaboration with Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, will explore the most fundamental building blocks of nearly all visible matter. Here, there are many different types of superconducting magnets near the interaction region (IR) of EIC. Due to space constraints and special lattice requirements, Tapered CCT (canted-cosine theta) magnets have been used for EIC. At beam injection, the magnetic field is only ~5.5% of the maximum operating field. Considerable field errors will be generated from persistent current in superconducting strands even using very fine filament for those superconductors. A tapered CCT demonstrator magnet has been built and tested successfully at BNL since July 2020 to evaluate the key technologies for future tapered CCT magnets. In October 2023, BNL team also measured the persistent current in this demonstrator magnet. To validate the persistent current simulation methods for CCT magnets in EIC, this paper used a full 3D Opera Model and measured magnetization data from superconducting strand for the simulation. Simulation results showed reasonable agreement with recent measurement results.

Incorporation of shuttle CCT parameters in computer simulation models

Computer simulations of shuttle missions have become increasingly important during recent years. The complexity of mission planning for satellite launch and repair operations which usually involve EVA has led to the need for accurate visibility and access studies. The PLAID modeling package used in the Man-Systems Division at Johnson currently has the necessary capabilities for such studies. In addition, the modeling package is used for spatial location and orientation of shuttle components for film overlay studies such as the current investigation of the hydrogen leaks found in the shuttle flight. However, there are a number of differences between the simulation studies and actual mission viewing. These include image blur caused by the finite resolution of the CCT monitors in the shuttle and signal noise from the video tubes of the cameras. During the course of this investigation the shuttle CCT camera and monitor parameters are incorporated into the existing PLAID framework. These parameters are specific for certain camera/lens combinations and the SNR characteristics of these combinations are included in the noise models. The monitor resolution is incorporated using a Gaussian spread function such as that found in the screen phosphors in the shuttle monitors. Another difference between the traditional PLAID generated images and actual mission viewing lies in the lack of shadows and reflections of light from surfaces. Ray tracing of the scene explicitly includes the lighting and material characteristics of surfaces. The results of some preliminary studies using ray tracing techniques for the image generation process combined with the camera and monitor effects are also reported.

Elliptic Aperture CCT Coils for HTS Dipole Magnets

High-temperature REBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-x}$ (REBCO) superconductors are a route to increase the field of accelerator magnets beyond the 15-16T practical limit of Nb$_{3}$Sn. REBCO cabled in a CORC geometry is a promising fit for this application, enabling the design of low inductance magnets with conductor transposition. However, the use of CORC in coils with the tight conductor bending radii typical of accelerator magnets remains a key challenge, with on-going research both on the conductor development and coil design fronts seeking to address this issue. Here, in this work we explore the tradeoffs between circular and elliptic aperture canted-cosine-theta (CCT) coils when the conductor minimum bending radius is a key consideration, concluding that aperture ellipticity is an important free parameter in the optimization of magnetically efficient CORC dipole magnets. In particular, we show that elliptic bore designs enable a regime of smaller aperture HTS coils, an important result for LTS-HTS hybrid magnets and more generally for accelerator applications benefiting from non-circular magnet apertures. To this end we present an elliptic aperture dipole design optimized for hybrid testing within the US Magnet Development Program (US-MDP) and share 77 K test results of a prototype coil which provides first experimental confirmation of the advantages.

Thermal Performance of a Conduction-Cooled CCT Dipole ReBCO Magnet: Several Cycles of Cool-Down and Thermal Gradient Measurements

Here, this paper presents experimental results from conduction-cooled thermal testing of a ReBCO canted cosine theta (CCT) magnet (C2), originally designed and fabricated at LBNL using CORC cables. While the performance of the coil under liquid helium and nitrogen environments has been previously established, this study explores its behavior under conduction cooling using a large test cryostat at The Ohio State University. The magnet, measuring 613 mm in length and weighing ∼75 kg, consists of four helical layers wound with ReBCO-based CORC wire and was thermally anchored to a copper cold ring supported by a G-10 strongback. Cooling was provided by two Sumitomo RDK-415D cryocoolers, offering a combined 3 W at 4.2 K and 150 W at 77 K. Multiple thermal cycles were performed, with cooldown durations of up to 45 hours. Final base temperatures of approximately 10.8 K (at the coil edge) and 12.0 K (at the coil center) were achieved, with an axial temperature difference of approximately 1.2 K. The warm-up period extended over approximately 24.6 hours. Voltage measurements from all four layers were recorded during cooldown and warmup. The system demonstrated stable cooldown performance, repeatable gradients, and good thermal anchoring. These results support the feasibility of conduction cooling in large-scale HTS magnets, aligning with broader goals for “green” cryogen-free accelerator technologies and paving the way for more sustainable, scalable, and energy-efficient high-field magnet systems in next-generation particle accelerators.

Critical current and stability tests of Nb 3 Sn for LBNL CCT magnet project

The Nb 3 Sn wires received from LBNL include the original round wires as well as the extracted wires from Rutherford cables. Total of 12 samples were prepared and heat treated. Five of them were tested for electric field versus current (E-I), among them 4 samples were further tested for electric field versus magnetic field (E-H). E-I traces were measured in magnetic field between 5 T and 8 T at 4.2 K. The critical currents of these sample are between 924 A and 993 A at 5 T. E-H measurements were performed at currents between 900 and 1500 A at 4.2 K. The stability currents, which is defined as the maximum current without quench during the E-H test, are determined to be between 1100 A and 1400 A. A separate Excel file presenting all the critical current and E-H curves is attached.

Water quality parameters of harbors of Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands: Acquisition of in situ water data, intercorrelation of selected water parameters, and initial correlation of these in situ biological, chemical and physical data with ERTS-1 bulk CCT MSS band 5 data

The author has identified the following significant results. Remote sensing by the ERTS-1 satellite was compared with selected water quality parameters including pH, salinity, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, water depth, water temperature, turbidity, plankton concentration, current variables, chlorophylla, total carotenoids, and species diversity of the benthic community. Strong correlation between turbidity and MSS-sensed radiance was recorded and less strong correlations between the two plankton pigments and radiance. Turbidity and benthic species diversity were highly correlated furnishing an inferential tie between an easily sensed water quality variable and a sensitive indicator of average water quality conditions.
