Combined Neyman–Pearson chi-square: An improved approximation to the Poisson-likelihood chi-square

We describe an approximation to the widely-used Poisson-likelihood chi-square using a linear combination of Neyman’s and Pearson’s chi-squares, namely “combined Neyman–Pearson chi-square” ($X^2_{CNP}$). Through analytical derivations and toy model simulations, we show that leads to a significantly smaller bias on the best-fit model parameters compared to those using either Neyman’s or Pearson’s chi-square. When the computational cost of using the Poisson-likelihood chi-square is high, $X^2_{CNP}$ provides a good alternative given its natural connection to the covariance matrix formalism.

Energetics of hydroxylbastnäsite solid solutions, La 1-$\chi$ Nd $\chi$ CO 3 OH

Bastnäsites (LnCO 3 (F,OH)) are a group of common rare earth elements (REE)-bearing minerals and are one of the primary global sources of REE. Due to the chemical similarities among REE, bastnӓsites tend to occur as solid solutions instead of end members in REE containing ores. To better understand the processes and the mechanisms of formation of such deposits, it is essential to determine the thermodynamic properties of bastnӓsites, including hydroxylbastnӓsite (LnCO 3 OH) solid solutions. In this work, we performed detailed structural and calorimetric investigations on synthetic hexagonal La–Nd hydroxylbastnӓsite (La 1-$\chi$ NdCO 3 OH, $\chi$ = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) solid solutions. X-ray diffraction confirms the crystal structure of the solid solution series in the $\ P$6 space group, and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis reveals local bonding environments characterized by three different types of 9-coordinated metal-oxygen polyhedra. Unit cell parameters of La1–xNdxCO3OH exhibit a nearly linear relation with the Nd content x, suggesting a random distribution of La and Nd in the structure. Their standard enthalpies of formation (Δ$\ H$° f ) were determined by high temperature oxide melt drop solution calorimetry, from which the enthalpies of mixing (Δ$\ H$ mix ) were derived. The Δ$\ H$ mix can be fitted by a regular solution model with an interaction parameter of 12.58 ± 0.16 kJ/mol, suggesting enthalpic metastability of La1–xNdxCO3OH relative to the two endmembers. Combining entropy and enthalpy, we further estimated the Gibbs free energies of mixing (Δ$\ G$ mix ) at relevant temperatures, revealing favorable temperatures under which the intermediate La 1-$\chi$ NdCO 3 OH phases can be stabilized. Such entropy-driven stabilization, as is consistent with our geochemical modeling results, may explain the enhancement of thermal stability of the solid solutions in nature. Additionally, the temperature range constrained from this study may be used to estimate the thermal history of REE bastnӓsite deposit.

Dynamic Rupture Modeling of the 1999 Chi-Chi, Taiwan Earthquake Using 3DFinite Element Method. Sensitivity Analysis of Slip Rate Function to Model Parameters of Crustal Weak-Zone

The main objective of this study was the dynamic rupture modeling of the M7.3 1999 Chi-Chi, Taiwan earthquake. The purpose of the numerical modeling was two folded. First, using models of rupture dynamics, derive kinematic rupture characteristics, including spatial and temporal variations of the slip rate time history and rupture speed, in the long-period ground motion generation area (LMGA), strong motion generation areas (SMGAs) and background fault area for a thrust shallow rupture. Second, investigate the sensitivity of source time function characteristics in the LMGA and SMGA areas to model parameterization of low-velocity weak zone, such as thickness and shear wave velocity.

Constraints on the $\chi_\mathrm{c1}$ versus $\chi_\mathrm{c2}$ Polarizations in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV

The polarizations of promptly produced χc1 and χc2 mesons are studied using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, in proton-proton collisions at s=8 TeV. The χc states are reconstructed via their radiative decays χc→J/ψγ, with the photons being measured through conversions to e+e−, which allows the two states to be well resolved. The polarizations are measured in the helicity frame, through the analysis of the χc2 to χc1 yield ratio as a function of the polar or azimuthal angle of the positive muon emitted in the J/ψ→μ+μ- decay, in three bins of J/ψ transverse momentum. While no differences are seen between the two states in terms of azimuthal decay angle distributions, they are observed to have significantly different polar anisotropies. The measurement favors a scenario where at least one of the two states is strongly polarized along the helicity quantization axis, in agreement with nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics predictions. This is the first measurement of significantly polarized quarkonia produced at high transverse momentum.

Experimental demonstration of transient CHI start-up using a floating biased electrode configuration

Transient coaxial helicity injection (CHI) current start-up in a spherical tokamak (ST) has been demonstrated for the first time using a reactor-relevant floating single biased (FSB) electrode configuration on QUEST. Unlike previous applications of CHI on HIT-II and on NSTX in which the entire ST vessel was split in two using two toroidal ceramic rings as vacuum breaks, in the FSB electrode configuration on QUEST, only the lower outer divertor plate is electrically insulated from the rest of the vessel. This is the CHI injector region. A CHI discharge is generated by driving current, using an external power supply, along magnetic field lines that connect the inner and outer divertor plates in the CHI injector region. The CHI plasma evolution and closed flux formation on QUEST are very similar to those on NSTX and have generated toroidal currents of 150 kA with 100 kA of current flowing on closed flux surfaces. An alternate, force-free model approach has been used to derive the CHI scaling relations. The resulting CHI scaling relations from the model are consistent with the conventional CHI scaling relations, which state that the CHI generated toroidal current is proportional to the CHI injector flux and the CHI injector current is inversely proportional to the toroidal field. These results from QUEST bode well for the application of CHI in a new generation of compact high field STs and low aspect ratio tokamaks in which the space for the central solenoid is very restricted.

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Tai Chi Training in Cardiorespiratory Fitness of Elderly People

Objectives. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of Tai Chi on cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in elderly people using meta-analysis. Methods. This study used seven electronic databases and data retrieved from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the role of Tai Chi on CRF in the elderly. All these 24 RCTs were screened and selected from 7 literature databases. The Stata 11.2 software (StataCorp, USA) was used for the meta-analysis, subgroup analysis, and bias test, while the Cochrane Collaboration’s tool was used for the assessment of the risk of bias (RoB). 4 researchers independently participated in sample selection, data extraction, and RoB assessment. Results. Following the inclusion criteria, 24 eligible studies were included in our analysis. The meta-analysis indicated that Tai Chi practice significantly increased the maximum rate of oxygen consumption (VO2 max) (weighted mean difference (WMD) = 3.76, 95% CI: 1.25 to 6.26, P < 0.1 ), leading to an overall reduction in the heart rate (HR) (WMD = −1.84, 95% CI: −2.04 to −1.63, P ≤ 0.001 ) and an increase in the O2 pulse (WMD = 0.94, 95% CI: 0.60 to 1.28, P ≤ 0.001 ) in individuals who practiced Tai Chi regularly compared with those who did not. The subgroup analysis suggested that overall in those who practiced Tai Chi, males (WMD = 1.48, 95% CI: 0.85 to 2.12, P ≤ 0.001 ) had higher O2 pulse than females (WMD = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.33 to 1.12, P ≤ 0.001 ). The subgroup analysis also showed an increase in the vital capacity (VC) (WMD = 316.05, 95% CI: 239.74 to 392.35, P ≤ 0.001 ) in individuals practicing Tai Chi. When the samples were further stratified by Tai Chi practicing time, the subgroup analysis suggested that individuals practicing Tai Chi over a period of 24 weeks showed no significant difference in VC (WMD = 82.95, 95% CI: -98.34 to 264.23, P = 0.370 ), while those practicing Tai Chi over a period of 48 weeks showed a significant increase (WMD = 416.62, 95% CI: 280.68 to 552.56, P ≤ 0.001 ). Furthermore, the subgroup analysis demonstrated that the increase in VC is significantly correlated with the Tai Chi practicing time (WMD = 344.97, 95% CI: 227.88 to 442.06, P ≤ 0.001 ). Conclusion. Regular Tai Chi practice could improve the CRF in the elderly, as indicated by significant improvement in indicators including VO2max, O2pulse, VC, and HR. However, gender and practice time might influence the overall beneficial outcomes.

Design Considerations for the Implementation of a High-Field-Side Transient CHI System on QUEST

Transient coaxial helicity injection (T-CHI), a method first developed on the small helicity injected torus (HIT-II) experiment and then validated on the much larger National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) device, is a method to initiate an inductive-like tokamak plasma discharge without reliance on the central solenoid. A CHI discharge is initiated by driving current along magnetic flux that connects the inner and outer divertor plates on one end of the tokamak. To permit this, on both HIT-II and NSTX, toroidal ceramic insulators were used to electrically separate the inner and outer vessel components. The use of such large toroidal vacuum insulators may not be easy to implement in reactors. To address this issue, the Q-shu University experiments with steady-state spherical tokamak (ST) (QUEST) is developing a reactor-relevant CHI configuration in which one of the divertor plates is electrically insulated from the rest of the vessel. The first application of T-CHI on QUEST biased the CHI electrode to the outer vessel. While the CHI discharges could be easily generated, it was found that as the discharge filled the vessel, the separation distance between the injector magnetic flux footprints widened, a condition that is not favorable for the generation of closed flux surfaces. Biasing the electrode to the inner wall is a configuration similar to that used on NSTX and HIT-II, but initial testing in this configuration has proved to be challenging. The design described here overcomes the present limitation by locating the CHI electrode much closer to the CHI injector flux coil and using an NSTX-like gas injection manifold to enable high-field-side T-CHI startup on QUEST. Finally, the concepts described in this article should also benefit the future implementation of T-CHI systems in other tokamaks and spherical tokamaks.

Improvements to the High-Field-Side Transient CHI System on QUEST

Transient coaxial helicity injection (CHI) is a promising candidate for solenoid-free plasma current start-up in a low-aspect-ratio tokamak in support of developing fully non-inductive scenarios. The aim of the transient CHI research on QUEST is to develop a reactor-relevant CHI design. On QUEST, a CHI discharge is initiated by driving current along magnetic field lines that connect an electrically insulated electrode plate (which is referred to as a bias electrode) to a vessel component at the bottom region of the spherical tokamak. In the first application of CHI on QUEST, the electrically insulated electrode plate was biased with respect to the outer vessel in a configuration referred to as low-field-side (LFS) injection. To maintain a narrow injector flux footprint width throughout the discharge, QUEST is now developing a high-field-side (HFS) injection configuration, in which the electrically insulated electrode plate is biased with respect to the inner vessel components. Through the implementation of a CHI-dedicated gas injection system, studies in the HFS injection configuration have now demonstrated good magnetic flux evolution into the vacuum vessel. Toroidal currents up to 43 kA have been achieved, and the generated current has increased in proportion to the magnetic flux connecting the electrodes. Finally, these results which show agreement with the CHI-scaling suggest that much higher levels of toroidal current can be generated on QUEST in an optimized CHI system in which the magnetic flux connecting the CHI electrodes is further increased.

$\mathrm{T}$ransient $\mathrm{CHI}$ System Design Studies for $\mathrm{P}$ EGASUS -$\mathrm{III}$

We report transient coaxial helicity injection (transient CHI), first developed on the Helicity Injected Torus-II (HIT-II) and later on the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) for implementing solenoid-free plasma current startup capability in a spherical tokamak (ST), is now planned to be tested on the Pegasus-III ST using a novel double-biased configuration. Such a configuration is likely needed for transient CHI deployment in a reactor. The transient CHI system optimization will be studied on Pegasus-III to enable startup toroidal persisting currents at the limits permitted by the external poloidal field coils. A transient CHI discharge is generated by driving injector current along magnetic field lines that connect the inner and outer divertor plates on one end of the ST. Simulations using the Tokamak Simulation Code are used to assess the transient CHI toroidal current generation potential and electrode gap location on the Pegasus-III. While past transient CHI systems have used high-voltage, oil-filled capacitors for driving the injector current, for improved safety, Pegasus-III will use a high-current capacitor bank based on low-voltage electrolytic capacitors. The designed and fabricated system is capable of over 32 kA. The modular design features permit the system to be upgraded to higher currents, as needed, to meet the future needs of the Pegasus-III facility.

Demonstration of transient CHI startup using a floating biased electrode configuration

Abstract Results from the successful solenoid-free plasma startup using the method of transient coaxial helicity injection (transient CHI) in the QUEST spherical tokamak (ST) are reported. Unlike previous applications of CHI on HIT-II and on NSTX which required two toroidal insulating breaks to the vacuum vessel, QUEST uses a first of its kind, floating single biased electrode configuration, which does not use such a vacuum break. Instead, the CHI electrode is simply insulated from the outer lower divertor plate support structure. This configuration is much more suitable for implementation in a fusion reactor than the previous configurations. Transient CHI generated toroidal currents of 135 kA were obtained. The toroidal current during the formation of a closed flux configuration was over 50 kA. These results bode well for the application of transient CHI in a new generation of compact high-field STs and tokamaks in which the space for the central solenoid is very restricted.

Initial Results from High-Field-Side Transient CHI Start-Up on QUEST

Transient coaxial helicity injection (t-CHI) current start-up using a new design simple electrode configuration has been implemented on the QUEST. Discharges injected from the low field side (LFS) and from the high field side (HFS) were examined. Compared to the LFS injection case, the HFS injection has the advantages of providing access to a higher toroidal field and better controlling the location of the injector flux footprint location. Although the present PF coils on QUEST are not well positioned to form the injector flux on the HFS injector region and there has been a frequent occurrence of the spurious arcs, known as absorber arcs, HFS injection has shown flux evolution in a shape that is suitable for the formation of closed flux surfaces. The discharges were improved by installing an in-vessel-coil and adding a new cylindrical electrode to the existing CHI electrode. Overall, the results show that the new cylindrical electrode allowed the flux to evolve stably while allowing both the inner and the outer injector flux footprint to remain in the vicinity of the cylindrical electrode. This configuration which inherently generates a narrow injector flux footprint width resulted in discharges that strongly suggested the persistence of the CHI generated plasma after the injector current was reduced to zero. These studies have informed us of the need to improve the CHI gas injection system so that the absorber arcs could be better controlled in the HFS injection configuration.

The Covariance of PFNS Results from the Chi-Nu Experiment

The prompt fission neutron spectrum (PFNS) from neutron-induced fission is a fundamental quantity for the behavior of nuclear reactors, and has been measured many times on a wide variety of nuclei and covering different ranges of incident and emitted neutron energies. However, results from past measurements are frequently called into question in modern nuclear data evaluations because of a lack of thorough experimental documentation and incomplete uncertainty analyses. The Chi-Nu experiment at Los Alamos National Laboratory was designed to produce high-precision measurements of the PFNS of major actinides over a wide range of incident and emitted neutron energies, and with the documentation and covariance analysis required to ensure that the results of this experiment maintain their impact long into the future, thereby avoiding this pitfall of past measurements. In this work we describe the Chi-Nu experiment along with summaries of the treatment of and methods developed to address two important components of the analysis of Chi-Nu data: random-coincidence backgrounds and MCNP simulations. Furthermore, we describe the first results for correlations not just between all data points collected on a single target nucleus, but also between all data points from separate Chi-Nu measurements on 235 U and 239 Pu. These correlations are important for accurately calculating ratios of the PFNS from one actinide to another, which are rare and can be informative for nuclear data evaluation efforts.

Design considerations for optimizing the transient CHI injector on QUEST

Transient coaxial helicity injection (transient CHI) on the QUEST (Q-shu University Experiment with Steady-State ST) spherical tokamak (ST) has recently validated the floating biased electrode configuration for solenoid-free plasma startup. In support of a significant divertor upgrade on QUEST, the details of the transient CHI injector geometry on QUEST have been examined more closely using tokamak simulation code (TSC) simulations. QUEST uses a HIT-II-like (Helicity Injected Torus) injector configuration in which the injector region is comprised of coaxial injector electrodes located in the lower part of the machine. TSC simulations indicate high injector flux operation may benefit from an increased gap between the coaxial electrodes. This is the first study to examine the differences between an open and closed electrode configuration for solenoid-free plasma startup using transient CHI. Results show that both configurations can generate similar levels of closed flux, but the closed configuration may be easier to implement in some ST designs as a much smaller portion of the injector needs to be close to the injector flux coil. Results show that increasing the electrode gap width from the present 10.8 cm to about 15–20 cm would increase the closed flux fraction by about 40%. The results presented in this paper are generally applicable to the CHI design for other STs.

Including Chi-Nu 235 U PFNS Experimental Data into an ENDF/B-VIII.1 Release Candidate Evaluation

This report documents an evaluation of 235 U prompt fission neutron spectra (PFNS) that is a release candidate for the upcoming U.S. nuclear data library, ENDF/B-VIII.1. This evaluation differs from its predecessor, ENDF/B-VIII.0, mainly by the inclusion of 235 U PFNS measured by the Chi-Nu team of LANL and LLNL. This data set is the first one that covers the 235 U PFNS for continuous incident-neutron energies of 1⁻20 MeV and outgoing-neutron energies from 10 keV⁻10 MeV with high precision. Previous data sets were either measured in a limited energy range or with less precision. Hence, these new Chi-Nu data provide decisive information for the evaluation. The resulting evaluated data correspond well to the new experimental PFNS. The evaluated PFNS also produce average mean energies and 239 Pu/ 235 U PFNS in agreement with associated Chi-Nu data. If one uses the new evaluated data to predict the neutron multiplication factor, k eff , of selected ICSBEP critical assemblies, the differences of simulated values compared to those using ENDF/B-VIII.0 is modest (less than 55 pcm). This difference in k eff can be easily accommodated by changes in the 235 U average prompt fission neutron multiplicity that is currently being re-evaluated. In addition to that, the new PFNS predict on average 235 U LLNL pulsed-sphere neutron-leakage spectra better than ENDF/B-VIIII.0 PFNS.

Evaluating the 238 U PFNS Including Chi-Nu Experimental Data

This report documents an evaluation of 238 U prompt fission neutron spectra (PFNS) which is a deliverable for a FY2024 Q4 NCSP (Nuclear Criticality Safety Program) milestone. This evaluation is new; its prior input is based on extended Los Alamos and exciton models implemented in the code CoH. Experimental covariances were estimated for five experimental data sets. One of these data sets that was measured by the Chi-Nu team of LANL and LLNL. It covers the 238 U PFNS for continuous incident-neutron energies of 1–20 MeV and outgoing-neutron energies from 10 keV– 10 MeV with high precision. Contrary to Chi-Nu data, previous data sets were measured in a limited energy range. The resulting evaluated data correspond well to the experimental PFNS taken into account for the evaluation. The evaluated PFNS also produce average mean energies in agreement with associated Chi-Nu data. If one uses the new evaluated data to predict the neutron multiplication factor, k eff , of the Flattop, Flattop-Pu and BigTen ICSBEP critical assemblies (which all have thick reflectors with high percentages of 238 U), the differences of simulated values compared to those using ENDF/B-VIII.1β3 is modest (less than 25 pcm). In addition to that, the new PFNS predict on average 238 U LLNL pulsed-sphere neutron-leakage spectra slightly better than ENDF/BVIIII.0 and ENDF/B-VIII.1β3 PFNS. The differences are, however, well within the experimental uncertainties.

Measurement of the 240 Pu(n,f) Prompt Fission Neutron Spectra with Chi-Nu

The DOE Nuclear Criticality Safety Program has funded a multi-year effort to measure the 240 Pu(n,f) Prompt Fission Neutron Spectrum at Chi-Nu. This project is a joint LANL-LLNL effort, involving the preparation of 12 240 Pu foils and construction of a Parallel-Plate Avalanche Counter at LLNL, with subsequent measurements of the 240 Pu(n,f) PFNS at the Chi-Nu beamline at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center’s Weapons Neutron Research facility (LANSCE/WNR). We expect the PPAC to be ready in time to perform the measurements this run cycle.

Evaluating 240 Pu Prompt Fission Neutron Spectra Including Chi-Nu Experimental Data

This report documents an evaluation of 240 Pu prompt fission neutron spectra (PFNS) including Chi-Nu experimental data. This work is a FY2025 Q4 NCSP (Nuclear Criticality Safety Program) milestone and named a “strategic priority”. This evaluation is new; it differs substantially from the most recent evaluation included in the ENDF/B library, which was for ENDF/B-VII.1 and then carried over unchanged to ENDF/B-VIII.1. The key difference between ENDF/B-VIII.1 and the new evaluation is that we have, for the first time, realistic experimental 240 Pu PFNS covering a broad incident and outgoing neutron energy range.
