Programmable Multiresolution CMOS Active Pixel Sensor

CMOS active pixel sensors (APS) allow the flexibility of placing signal processing circuitry on the imaging focal plane. The multiresolution CMOS APS can perform block averaging on-chip to eliminate the off-chip software intensive image processing. This 128 x 128 APS array can be read out at any user-defined resolution by configuring a set of digital shift registers. The resolution frame rate is 30 Hz with higher rates for all other image resolutions.

Integrated imaging sensor systems with CMOS active pixel sensor technology

This paper discusses common approaches to CMOS APS technology, as well as specific results on the five-wire programmable digital camera-on-a-chip developed at JPL. The paper also reports recent research in the design, operation, and performance of APS imagers for several imager applications.

CMOS Active Pixel Image Sensor

A new CMOS active pixel image sensor is reported. The sensor uses a 2.0mue double-poly, double-metal foundry CMOS process and is realized as a 28 x 28 array of 40 mue x 40 mue pixels. The Sensor features TTL compatible voltages, low noise and large dynamic range, and will be useful in machine vision and smart sensor applications.

256X256 CMOS Active Pixel Sensor Camera-on-a-Chip

A CMOS imaging sensor is described that uses active pixel sensor (APS) technology which permits the integration of the detector array with on-chip timing, control and signal chain electronics. This sensor has been used to implement a CMOS APS camera-on-a-chip.

JPL CMOS Active Pixel Sensor Technology

This paper will present the JPL-developed complementary metal- oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) active pixel sensor (APS) technology. The CMOS APS has achieved performance comparable to charge coupled devices, yet features ultra low power operation, random access readout, on-chip timing and control, and on-chip analog to digital conversion. Previously published open literature will be reviewed.

CMOS Active Pixel Sensors for Low Power, Highly Miniaturized Imaging Systems

The complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) active pixel sensor (APS) technology has been developed over the past three years by NASA at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and has reached a level of performance comparable to CCDs with greatly increased functionality but at a very reduced power level.

A 128 x 128 CMOS Active Pixel Image Sensor for Highly Integrated Imaging Systems

A new CMOS-based image sensor that is intrinsically compatible with on-chip CMOS circuitry is reported. The new CMOS active pixel image sensor achieves low noise, high sensitivity, X-Y addressability, and has simple timing requirements. The image sensor was fabricated using a 2 micrometer p-well CMOS process, and consists of a 128 x 128 array of 40 micrometer x 40 micrometer pixels. The CMOS image sensor technology enables highly integrated smart image sensors, and makes the design, incorporation and fabrication of such sensors widely accessible to the integrated circuit community.
