K 2 Co 2 TeO 6 : A layered magnet with a S = 1 2 Co 2 + honeycomb lattice

Recent observations of Kitaev interactions in d 7 electron configurations have generated research interest in Co 2+ based honeycomb magnets. Here, we report the synthesis of a K 2 Co 2 TeO 6 single crystal. X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy experiments show that K 2 Co 2 TeO 6 crystallizes in a $P$6 3 /$mcm$ space group with undistorted honeycomb layers of Co 2+ ions. Anisotropic magnetic and thermodynamic characterizations demonstrate an effective S = $\frac{1}{2}$ state of Co 2+ at low temperature, competing magnetic phases, and weak magnetic transitions that can be suppressed by applying fields. Moreover, the interlayer K disorder level is tunable by thermal treatments, and it affects the magnetic features obviously. In conclusion, our findings provide a new and promising platform for studying Kitaev physics.

Facilitated transport membrane with functionalized ionic liquid carriers for CO 2 /N 2 , CO 2 /O 2 , and CO 2 /air separations

CO 2 separations from cabin air and the atmospheric air are challenged by the very low partial pressures of CO 2 . In this study, a facilitated transport membrane (FTM) is developed to separate CO 2 from air using functionalized ionic liquid (IL) and poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) carriers. A highly permeable bicontinuous structured poly(ethersulfone)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) ( b PES/PET) substrate is used to support the PIL–IL impregnated graphene oxide thin film. The CO 2 separation performance was tested under a mixture feed of CO 2 /N 2 /O 2 /H 2 O. Under 410 ppm of CO 2 at 1 atm feed gas, CO 2 permanence of 3923 GPU, and CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /O 2 selectivities of 1200 and 300, respectively, are achieved with helium sweeping on the permeate side. For increased transmembrane pressure (>0 atm), a thicker PIL–IL/GO layer was shown to provide mechanical strength and prevent leaching of the mobile carrier. CO 2 binding to the carriers, ion diffusivities, and the glass transition temperature of the PIL–IL gels were examined to determine the membrane composition and rationalize the superior separation performance obtained. This report represents the first FTM study with PIL–IL carriers for CO 2 separation from air.

Shock tube/laser absorption measurement of the rate constant of the reaction: H 2 O 2 + CO 2 2OH + CO 2

We address the role of the linear mixing rule in the kinetics of the H 2 O 2 decomposition system by reporting the rate constant for H 2 O 2 + M = 2OH + M (M = Ar and CO 2 ) in the temperature range of 1087-1234 K at low pressures in a mixture of 20% CO 2 in Argon. The reaction rate constant was inferred from H 2 O concentrations monitored by using a laser-absorption spectroscopy-based water diagnostic. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first measurement of the rate constant of this reaction in a mixture to be reported in literature. A significant discrepancy was found between the rate constants derived using the traditional linear mixing rule and the reduced pressure linear mixing rule. Furthermore, this discrepancy can have serious implications on the predictive accuracy of these kinetic models, especially under conditions relevant to the operation of supercritical CO 2 (sCO 2 ) power cycles that rely on oxy-fuel combustion in a working fluid comprised almost entirely of CO 2 .

Efficient Self-Sensitized Photochemical CO 2 Reduction Using [Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 (I)] 2+ and [Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 (CH 3 CN)] 3+ Photocatalysts with Pendent Ammonium Cations

Rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes fac-[Re(bpy)(CO) 3 (L)]n + are the classical examples of self-sensitized photocatalysts capable of the dual roles of light absorption and catalysis. Here, in this work, a series of dicationic halido or tricationic solvento complexes fac-[Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 X] n+ (PF 6 ) n (where X = Cl - or I - (n = 2), or CH 3 CN (n = 3) and bpy 2+ is bipyridine modified by two -CH 2 -(NMe3) + tetra-alkylammonium cations) have been investigated as self-sensitized and sensitized CO 2 reduction photocatalysts. Four structural isomers differing in the cation position have been tested in N,Nʹ-dimethylacetamide solvent (DMA) using 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzimidazole (BIH) as the electron donor, and the position of the cationic pendants has a significant impact on the catalyst turnover number and quantum efficiency (ϕ). Up to 455 self-sensitized turnovers of CO and a high photon efficiency (ϕ CO ) of 22% have been achieved. Time-resolved infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations were used to characterize the catalytic cycle including the ligand exchange between one-electron reduced (OER) halido and solvento species as well as the binding of CO 2 to the putative two-electron reduced (TER) species. The CO 2 -reactive TER catalyst was formed by disproportionation or intramolecular electron transfer between two forms of the OER catalyst as indicated by the formation of the fully oxidized catalyst concurrent with CO 2 binding. When [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ was used as a sensitizer, catalyst durability improved, and the selectivity toward formate increased as high as 3.3:1 over CO (total TON = 1370) due to acidification of the reaction, which promotes formation of the hydride intermediate, as BIH was consumed and deprotonated.

Unraveling the Role of Glycine in K 2 CO 3 Solvent for CO 2 Removal

Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), a main composition of greenhouse gases, is believed to be responsible for global warming. Both potassium carbonate (K 2 CO 3 ) and amino acids have been studied for CO 2 removal. In this study, for the first time, carbamate formation in the absence of CO 2 was discovered in K 2 CO 3 solvents when small amounts of amino acids like glycine were added, and the mechanism of carbamate formation and CO 2 absorption in such solvents are detailed and supported the observed fast CO 2 absorption in the presence of amino acids. Here, in the mixed solvent of K 2 CO 3 and glycine, bicarbonate and hydroxide were formed from carbonate hydrolysis, and the deprotonated amino acid reacted with bicarbonate to form carbamate in the absence of CO 2 and, in the presence of CO 2 , reacted with CO 2 to form carbamate which could subsequently hydrolyze into bicarbonate. As a result, amino acid (even with a small amount) significantly enhanced the CO 2 absorption kinetics in the mixed solvents, and a high CO 2 loading (0.62 mol CO 2 /mol K 2 CO 3 ) was achieved in multiple (e.g., 10) cycles. Such mixed solvents of K 2 CO 3 and amino acid therefore may overcome the limitations of each individual component and may be ideal candidates for CO 2 removal.

Introducing the monoclinic polymorph of the honeycomb magnet Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

Recent theoretical studies have suggested that the low-energy Hamiltonian of honeycomb cobaltate systems could be dominated by anisotropic Kitaev interactions. Motivated by the theory, a honeycomb layered material Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 with a hexagonal unit cell has been studied and found to exhibit antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at 27 K with two spin reorientation transitions at 15 and 5 K. Here we report a monoclinic polymorph of Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 , also with honeycomb layered structure but with a single AFM transition at 9.6 K and without spin reorientation transitions at lower temperatures. Here, using neutron diffraction, we identify an in-plane zigzag AFM order in the ground state with the spins canted out of the honeycomb planes and ferromagnetically coupled between them. The zigzag order is suppressed by a magnetic field of 6T. The lower critical temperature and field, positive Curie-Weiss temperature, and out-of-plane canting of spins in the monoclinic Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 suggest enhanced frustration in this polymorph compared to the hexagonal one.

Sub-100 mA/cm 2 CO 2 -to-CO Reduction Current Densities in Hierarchical Porous Gold Electrocatalysts Made by Direct Ink Writing and Dealloying

While most research efforts on CO 2 -to-CO reduction electrocatalysts focus on boosting their selectivity, the reduction rate, directly proportional to the reduction current density, is another critical parameter to be considered in practical applications. This is because mass transport associated with the diffusion of reactant/product species becomes a major concern at a high reduction rate. Nanostructured Au is a promising CO 2 -to-CO reduction electrocatalyst for its very high selectivity. However, the CO 2 -to-CO reduction current density commonly achieved in conventional nanostructured Au electrocatalysts is relatively low (in the range of 1–10 mA/cm 2 ) for practical applications. In this work, we combine direct ink writing-based additive manufacturing and dealloying to design a robust hierarchical porous Au electrocatalyst to improve the mass transport and achieve high CO 2 -to-CO reduction current densities on the order of 64.9 mA/cm 2 with CO partial current density of 33.8 mA/cm 2 at 0.55 V overpotential using an H-cell configuration. Although the current density achieved in our robust hierarchical porous Au electrocatalyst is one order of magnitude higher than the one achieved in conventional nanostructured electrocatalysts, we found that the selectivity of our system is relatively low, namely 52%, which suggests that mass transport remains a critical issue despite the hierarchical porous architecture. We further show that the bulk dimension of our electrocatalyst is a critical parameter governing the interplay between selectivity and reduction rate. In conclusion, the insights gained in this work shed new light on the design of electrocatalysts toward scale-up CO 2 reduction and beyond.

Fast lithium ion diffusion in brownmillerite Li x Sr 2 Co 2 O 5

Transition metal oxides not only exhibits novel magnetic properties but also provides outstanding ionic transports. Ionic conductors have great potential for interesting tunable physical properties via ionic liquid gating and novel energy storage applications such as all-solid-state lithium batteries. In particular, low migration barriers and high hopping attempt frequency are the keys to achieve fast ion diffusion in solids. Taking advantage of the oxygen-vacancy channel in Li x Sr 2 Co 2 O 5 , we show that migration barriers of lithium ion are as small as 0.28–0.17 eV depending on the lithium concentration rates. Our first-principles calculation also investigated hopping attempt frequency and concluded the room temperature ionic diffusivity and ion conductivity are high as 10 −7 –10 −6 cm 2 s −1 and 10 −3 –10 −2 Scm −1 , respectively, which outperform most of perovskite-type, garnet-type, and sulfide Li-ion solid-state electrolytes. This work proves Li x Sr 2 Co 2 O 5 as a promising super-ionic conductor.

Disorder-Enriched Magnetic Excitations in a Heisenberg-Kitaev Quantum Magnet Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6

Using optical magnetospectroscopy, we investigate the magnetic excitations of Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 in a broad magnetic field range (0 T ≤ B ≤ 17.5 T) at low temperature. Our measurements reveal rich spectra of in-plane magnetic excitations with a surprisingly large number of modes, even in the high-field spin-polarized state. Theoretical calculations find that the Na-occupation disorder in Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 plays a crucial role in generating these modes. Our Letter demonstrates the necessity to consider disorder in the spin environment in the search for Kitaev quantum spin liquid states in practicable materials.

Hydrophobic Nanoconfinement Enhances CO 2 Conversion to H 2 CO 3

Understanding the formation of H 2 CO 3 in water from CO 2 is important in environmental and industrial processes. Although numerous investigations have studied this reaction, the conversion of CO 2 to H 2 CO 3 in nanopores, and how it differs from that in bulk water, has not been understood. We use ReaxFF metadynamics molecular simulations to demonstrate striking differences in the free energy of CO 2 conversion to H 2 CO 3 in bulk and nanoconfined aqueous environments. We find that nanoconfinement not only reduces the energy barrier but also reverses the reaction from endothermic in bulk water to exothermic in nanoconfined water. Also, charged intermediates are observed more often under nanoconfinement than in bulk water. Stronger solvation and more favorable proton transfer with increasing nanoconfinement enhance the thermodynamics and kinetics of the reaction. Here our results provide a detailed mechanistic understanding of an important step in the carbonation process, which depends intricately on confinement, surface chemistry, and CO 2 concentration.

Time-resolved CO 2 , CO, and N 2 vibrational population measurements in Ns pulse discharge plasmas

Abstract Time-resolved CO 2 and N 2 vibrational populations and translational-rotational temperature are measured in a CO 2 –N 2 plasma sustained by a ns pulse discharge burst in plane-to-plane geometry. Time-resolved, absolute number density of CO generated in the plasma is also inferred from the experimental data. CO 2 and CO vibrational populations are measured by mid-IR, tunable quantum cascade laser absorption spectroscopy, and N 2 vibrational populations are measured by the ns broadband vibrational CARS. Transient excitation of N 2 and CO 2 asymmetric stretch vibrational energy modes is detected during the discharge burst. The time-resolved rate of CO generation does not correlate with N 2 or CO 2 ( ν 3 ) vibrational temperatures, indicating that CO 2 dissociation via the vibrational excitation is insignificant at the present conditions. The rate of CO generation decreases gradually during the discharge burst. The estimated specific energy cost of the CO product is close to that of N atoms in pure nitrogen, measured previously at similar operating conditions. Comparison of the experimental data with the kinetic modeling analysis indicates that CO 2 dissociation in collisions with electronically excited N 2 molecules is the dominant channel of CO generation at the present conditions, although the inferred CO yield in these processes is significantly lower than 1. The effect of vibrational energy transfer between N 2 and CO 2 on the plasma chemical processes is insignificant. The kinetic model underpredicts a rapid reduction of the N 2 and CO 2 ( ν 3 ) vibrational temperatures during the later half of the discharge burst and in the afterglow. V–T relaxation of N 2 by N and O atoms generated in the ns pulse discharge plasma does not affect the vibrational relaxation rate in a significant way. However, rapid V–T relaxation of CO 2 by O atoms has a significant effect on the relaxation rate. The difference between the experimental data and the modeling predictions may be due to the unknown scaling of the CO 2 –O V–T rates with the vibrational quantum number.

Calorimetric Study of Mixed Phosphates Na 4 M 3 (PO 4 ) 2 P 2 O 7 (M = Mn 2+ , Fe 2+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ ) to Evaluate the Electrochemical Trends

Mixed polyanionic compounds have been studied extensively as viable cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. Mixed phosphates, Na 4 M 3 (PO 4 ) 2 P 2 O 7 (M = Mn 2+ , Fe 2+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ ), provide a low barrier for Na-ion diffusion, being advantageous in comparison to phosphates and pyrophosphates. The reported order of sodium extraction is ambiguous and remains unclear. Despite being structurally similar, electrochemical performance differs for all four analogues with different degrees of (de)sodiation, according to the transition element present. High-temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry has been used to establish the relation between thermodynamic phase stability and observed capacity for this series of mixed phosphates. Thermodynamic phase stability largely depends on the kind of structure, type of bonding, and size of the cations present. So, according to our results, the thermodynamic phase stability follows the order Na 4 Mn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 P 2 O 7 > Na 4 Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 P 2 O 7 > Na 4 Co 3 (PO 4 ) 2 P 2 O 7 > Na 4 Ni 3 (PO 4 ) 2 P 2 O 7 . The thermodynamic studies serve as guidelines for the selection of compositions with the potential for fabricating advanced cathode materials with maximum performance.

Electronic and magnetic phase diagrams of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

The 3⁢d 7 Co 2+ -based insulating magnet Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 has recently been reported to have strong Kitaev interactions on a honeycomb lattice and is thus being considered as a Kitaev quandum spin liquid candidate. However, due to the existence of other types of interactions, a spontaneous long-range magnetic order occurs. This order is suppressed by applied magnetic fields leading to a succession of phases and ultimately saturation of the magnetic moments. The precise phase diagram, the nature of the phases, and the possibility that one of the field-induced phases is a Kitaev quantum spin liquid phase are still a matter of debate. Here, in this study, we measured an extensive set of physical properties to build the complete temperature-field phase diagrams to magnetic saturation at 10 T for magnetic fields along the a and a* axes, and a partial phase diagram up to 60 T along c. We probe the phases using magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, dielectric constant, and electric polarization, which is a symmetry-sensitive probe. With these measurements, we identify all the previously incomplete phase boundaries and find additional high-field phase boundaries. We find strong magnetoelectric coupling in the dielectric constant and moderate magnetostrictive coupling at several phase boundaries. Furthermore, we detect the symmetry of the magnetic order using electrical polarization measurements under magnetic fields. Based on our analysis, the absence of electric polarization under zero or finite magnetic field in any of the phases or after any combination of magnetic/electric field cooling suggests that a zigzag spin structure is more likely than a triple-Q spin structure at zero field. Finally, we investigate the hysteresis and first- or second-order nature of each phase transition and its entropy changes. With this information, we establish a map of the magnetic phases of this compound and its magnetic, thermodynamic, and magnetoelectric properties, and discuss where spin liquid or other phases may be sought in future studies.

Static magnetic order with strong quantum fluctuations in spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

Kitaev interactions, arising from the interplay of frustration and bond anisotropy, can lead to strong quantum fluctuations and, in an ideal case, to a quantum-spin-liquid state. However, in many nonideal materials, spurious non-Kitaev interactions typically promote a zigzag antiferromagnetic order in the d-orbital transition-metal compounds. Here, by combining neutron scattering with muon-spin rotation and relaxation techniques, we provide mechanism insights into the exotic properties of Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 , a candidate material of the Kitaev model. Below T N , the zero-field muon-spin relaxation rate becomes almost constant (~0.45 μs –1 ). We attribute this temperature-independent relaxation rate to the strong quantum fluctuations, as well as to the frustrated Kitaev interactions. As the magnetic field increases, neutron scattering data indicate a broader spin-wave excitation at the K-point. Therefore, quantum fluctuations seem not only robust but are even enhanced by the applied magnetic field. Our findings provide valuable hints for understanding the onset of the quantum-spin-liquid state in Kitaev materials.

Thermodynamic modeling of MDEA(aq)-NH 3 (aq)-K 2 CO 3 (aq)-CO 2 (aq) using the Extended UNIQUAC model

Here, the development of advanced processes for carbon dioxide capture requires reliable thermodynamic models to ensure accurate process design. This work presents an optimized parameter set of the Extended UNIQUAC model for advanced mixed solvent solutions containing CO 2 -MDEA-NH 3 -K 2 CO 3 in water. The model was parameterized using vapor–liquid equilibrium, pure component saturation pressure, excess enthalpy, heat of absorption, molar heat capacity, apparent molar heat capacity, and solid–liquid equilibrium. These thermal and equilibrium properties cover temperatures between 253.6 K to 600 K and pressures up to 75.6 bar. The current model represents an extension of previous versions that were suitable for modeling aqueous NH 3 and K 2 CO 3 solutions. This parametrization accounts for molecular interactions between MDEA and these two components, which allows for the design of advanced capture processes. This paper demonstrates that the new model parameters are valid within the range of operational conditions typically found in CO 2 capture processes.

Fast Catalysis at Low Overpotential: Designing Efficient Dicationic Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 I Electrocatalysts for CO 2 Reduction

Here we report a series of isomeric, dicationic Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 I com-plexes with bpy (2,2'-bipyridine) modified by two phenyl-CH 2 -(NMe 3 )+ pendants with cations located at variable distances from the active site for electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction in CH 3 CN/2.8 M H 2 O. The position of the cationic groups dramatically increases the rate of catalysis by 800-fold, from 1.2 to 950 s -1 , with a minor increase in overpotential. Acceleration is due to stabilization of the initial CO 2 adduct and lowering of ΔG ‡ for C-OH bond cleavage by Coulombic stabilization of anionic charges. Performance may be enhanced by accumulation in the electrochemical double layer. Transition state stabilization in the optimized isomer unlocks the low overpotential "protonation-first" pathway, highlighting the sizable effects of subtle structural optimization.

Out-of-plane magnetic phase diagram of the Kitaev quantum magnet Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

We have investigated the magnetic properties and mapped out the phase diagram of the honeycomb magnet Na 2⁢ Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 with Co 3d 7 in out-of-plane magnetic fields. This material has previously been proposed to show nearest-neighbor Kitaev interactions between Co spins and maybe even Kitaev quantum spin liquid behavior in high fields. At 0.01 T, we observe a thermal phase transition at T N = 27K, transitioning from a paramagnetic state to a canonical ferrimagnetic state. Upon increasing the magnetic field, a spin-floplike phase transition occurred before saturation of J = 1/2 between 10 K and T N . Below 10 K, a peak-dip-peak structure emerges between 10 and 17 T in the magnetic susceptibility (d⁢M/⁢dH) before the magnetic saturation, reminiscent of magnetization plateau behavior. The measurement of the magnetocaloric effect also shows dip-peak-dip behavior in this field range. Our data can be explained by an XXZ model with a single ion anisotropy and possibly small Kitaev and Γ exchange interactions. Finally, we also determined the magnetization saturation field that helps constrain the energy scale of the exchange interactions.
