Design and commissioning of the Correlated Gamma-Neutron Array for sCattering (CoGNAC)

The Correlated Gamma-Neutron Array for sCattering (CoGNAC) is a dual $n$-$γ$ detector array fielded at the Weapons Neutron Research facility at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Here, the detector array utilizes elpasolite detectors and liquid scintillators to perform measurements of neutron elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections and emitted particle angular distributions. This manuscript details the design and experimental setup of CoGNAC as well as some of the preliminary studies performed to select the elpasolite detectors deployed in the array. Examples of the analysis methods available to CoGNAC are given in the context of past CoGNAC measurements of neutron scattering reactions on 28 Si and 56 Fe.

Resolving Neutron Transport with the CoGNAC Neutron Scattering Program at LANSCE [Poster]

Neutron Scattering Defines Neutron Transport. Elastic (n,n) and inelastic (n,n'γ) reactions dictate the neutronic energy flow. Each scattering reaction changes neutron direction $\vartheta$ and energy E. Scattering cross sections and angular distributions are essential for neutron transport. Uncertainties on scattering evaluations and measurements dominate total uncertainties. New, high-precision neutron scattering measurements and evaluations are needed from light elements to actinides

ENDF/B-VIII.1 Validation: Covariance [Slides]

This presentation touches on ENDF/B-VIII.1 Validation: Covariance. Topics include inconsistencies in the ENDF files, derived matrices, lumped reactions and process ENDF data file with PUFF. Finally correcting data with cognac and redundant covariance that are not consistent are discussed.

High-precision Measurement of the 16 O($n, n'γ$) Cross Section using $γ$-ray Detection in Liquid Scintillators with H 2 O and BeO Targets

The 16 O($n, n'γ$) reaction was measured at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center white neutron source using γ-ray detection in liquid scintillators present in the upper hemisphere of the Correlated Gamma-Neutron Array for sCattering (CoGNAC). Separate measurements of this reaction were performed using H 2 O and BeO targets in successive years. The unique high energies of γ rays emitted from the 16 O($n, n'γ$) reaction facilitated a clean selection of this reaction from threshold to 9.8 MeV incident neutron energy without the need for precise measurements of the γ-ray energy or the scattered neutrons. The precise time resolution of the liquid scintillator detectors was then exploited to obtain high-resolution incident neutron energy measurements, and good agreement was obtained between the H 2 O and BeO results reported here. The dominant literature data sets for this reaction have systematic differences between them, but the present results improve upon the neutron energy resolution of earlier measurements and show important discrepancies in recent data. Finally, tentative data are also shown up to 20 MeV incident neutron energy but are potentially subject to improved understanding of the relative γ-ray and α decay branches from 16 O excited states.

Measurement of the 28 Si ⁢(𝑛,𝑛′⁢𝛾) cross section with 𝑛, 𝛾, and correlated 𝑛−𝛾 angular distributions

Silicon has become an unavoidable element in the circuitry central to everyday life. In turn, the interactions of silicon isotopes with neutrons for nuclear physics applications, among other motivations, have become increasingly important to understand. The dominant isotope of silicon, 28 Si, is thus of primary interest for enhanced understanding for neutron transport calculations and related investigations. Unfortunately, the existing measurement database for neutron scattering reactions on 28 Si is minimal, and nuclear data evaluations on this topic have not been updated for decades. This article details new measurements of the 28 Si ⁢(𝑛,𝑛′⁢𝛾) reaction utilizing multiple analysis methods available within the correlated gamma neutron array for scattering (CoGNAC). Specifically, high-precision near-threshold results and high-incident-energy results were obtained using the 𝛾-only and correlated 𝑛−𝛾 techniques. First-ever measurements of the correlated 𝑛−𝛾 angular distribution for particles emitted following population of the first excited state in 28 Si were obtained as well, which provide unique insight into theoretical descriptions of the inelastic neutron scattering reaction mechanism itself and detailed guidance for nuclear reaction models. The results agree well with literature data where they exist, and substantially expand on the current database for neutron reactions on 28 Si .
