Device and method for detecting presence of a wireless communication device

A device and method for detecting presence of a wireless communication device having an antenna with intrinsic characteristics includes a transmitter, a receiver, a memory element, and a processing element. The transmitter may send a first signal to the antenna of the wireless communication device. The receiver may receive a second signal from the antenna of the wireless communication device, the second signal being a first portion of the first signal that is reflected by the antenna based on intrinsic characteristics of the antenna. The memory element may store intrinsic characteristic information for the antenna. The processing element may determine presence of the wireless communication device by analyzing the second signal against the intrinsic characteristic information stored in the memory element.

The conductive strip is oriented at an angle α with respect to a rolling direction so as to comprise a helical configuration about the longitudinal axis with a non-zero helix angle β. The array exhibits a maximum gain of at least about 10 dB at a working frequency of at least about 0.1 THz.

Communication device with persistent configuration and verification

The present disclosure pertains to systems and methods for establishing communication with a remote communication device in a software defined network (SDN) during time when an SDN controller is unavailable. In one embodiment, a local communication device may be configured to receive a plurality of data flows from an SDN controller and to store the plurality of data flows in a persistent data memory. The device may generate a unique identifier for the local communication device that is transmitted to a remote communication device. Following a disruption the results in the SDN controller being unavailable, the local communication device may recover into a default configured state based on the plurality of data flows in the persistent data memory. The local communication device may then transmit the unique identifier to the remote communication device after the disruption to begin a process of reestablishing communication with the remote communication device.

Piezoelectric Vibrational and Acoustic Alert for a Personal Communication Device

An alert apparatus for a personal communication device includes a mechanically prestressed piezoelectric wafer positioned within the personal communication device and an alternating voltage input line coupled at two points of the wafer where polarity is recognized. The alert apparatus also includes a variable frequency device coupled to the alternating voltage input line, operative to switch the alternating voltage on the alternating voltage input line at least between an alternating voltage having a first frequency and an alternating voltage having a second frequency. The first frequency is preferably sufficiently high so as to cause the wafer to vibrate at a resulting frequency that produces a sound perceptible by a human ear, and the second frequency is preferably sufficiently low so as to cause the wafer to vibrate at a resulting frequency that produces a vibration readily felt by a holder of the personal communication device.

Communication device and method of making the same

A communication device for receiving an interrogation signal at a first carrier frequency and for transmitting a response signal at a second carrier frequency is disclosed. The interrogation signal comprises the first carrier frequency modulated at the second carrier frequency. The communication device includes a sensor coupled to a demodulator. The sensor receives a low frequency input used to further modulate the interrogation signal. The demodulator demodulates the low frequency input from the first carrier frequency to thereby generate the response signal comprising the second carrier frequency and the low frequency input. The demodulator preferably includes a pyroelectric demodulator, a piezoelectric demodulator, or a detector diode. The demodulator preferably has a frequency response less than the first carrier frequency but greater than the second carrier frequency.

Blockchain-Enabled Secure Device-to-Device Communication in Software-Defined Networking

The Internet of Things (IoT) continues to increase the demand for seamless communication among IoT devices. The rapid growth of IoT devices has led to an exponential increase in device-to-device (D2D) communication within the Software-Defined Networking (SDN), though it enables a flexible archi-tecture for managing network resources. However, traditional security models face challenges (e.g., Security, privacy, and trust) in addressing the dynamic and decentralized nature of these communications. Despite of these challenges, this paper proposes a novel approach that leverages blockchain technology to enhance the security, privacy, and trustworthiness of D2D communication within an SDN environment. The proposed approach integrates blockchain nodes in sDN components to establish a decentralized ledger for transparent and verifiable records. Smart contracts enforce authentication rules to ensure that only authenticated devices can access the network and engage in transactions securely. It also automates the security policies to ensure temper resistance execution using the cryptographic mechanism for data integrity and authentic communication. The Implementation of the proposed algorithms validates the resilience of the proposed approach against cyberattacks. Overall, the proposed approach enables efficient and secure D2D communication for resilient SDN infrastructure in IoT ecosystems.

Communication device, spread-spectrum receiver, and related method using normalized matched filter for improving signal-to-noise ratio in harsh environments

A communication device, a method of operating a communication device, and a spread-spectrum receiver are disclosed. The method includes receiving an incoming RF signal, demodulating the incoming RF signal to generate a baseband signal, filtering the baseband signal with a normalized matched filter having filter characteristics matched to a pulse-shaping filter of the transmitter that generated the incoming RF signal, and extracting a received signal from a normalized output generated by the normalized matched filter. As a result, interferences and noise from harsh environments may be suppressed.

Communication device for implementing selective encryption in a software defined network

The present disclosure pertains to systems and methods for selectively encrypting data flows within a software defined network (SDN). In one embodiment, a communication device may be configured to receive a plurality of unencrypted data packets. The communication device may receive from an SDN controller a criterion used to identify at least one of the unencrypted data flows to be encrypted. Based on the criterion, an encryption subsystem may generate an encrypted data flow the unencrypted data packets based on an encryption key. In some embodiments, the encryption system may parse the packets and encrypt the data payloads without encrypting the routing information associated with the packet. In other embodiments, the encryption subsystem may be configured to encapsulate and encrypt the entire unencrypted data packet. In some embodiments, the encryption subsystem may further be configured to authenticate a sending device and/or to verify the integrity of a message.

Assessing Customer Experience and Business Models around Price-to-Device Communication and Smart Control Pathways in CalFlexHub

California is facing three major challenges in electrical grid operation: renewable overgeneration, steep evening ramping, and growing peak demand. The state has identified dynamic retail price response as a key strategy evidenced by CPUC’s Dynamic Rates proceeding and CEC’s Load Management Standards. Furthermore, the CEC launched a $16M “California Load Flexibility Research and Deployment Hub (CalFlexHub)” administered by Berkeley Lab to accelerate price-response flexible load technologies in buildings and EV charging. There are more than 16 laboratory and field demonstration projects in CalFlexHub, each demonstrating innovative automated price-response technologies. CalFlexHub tests various pathways through which hourly price signals and triggered control commands are communicated to load-flexible devices such as smart thermostats, heat pumps, water heaters, and EVs. We identified seven unique communication and control pathways, which involve combinations of third-party cloud, device OEM’s cloud, building central gateway, and local controller in between the price server and the load-flexible devices. It is important for utilities and policy makers to understand the long-term implications of each pathway in designing future programs and creating related policies and mandates for market transformation. We propose an evaluation framework including the following aspects: ● Functionality: connectivity and uptime, resilience, and optimization; ● Customer experience: simplicity in setup, troubleshooting support, continuity, customer choice, first cost, and ongoing cost; ● Business model and scalability: advance interoperability, holistic solution, bridge unique gap, customer base, and value streams and pricing structures. In this paper, we identify emerging business models associated with each communication pathway and discuss their positive features and challenges from the above aspects.
