Lorentz and CPT violation in partons

A framework is presented for the factorization of high-energy hadronic processes in the presence of Lorentz and CPT violation. The comprehensive effective field theory describing Lorentz and CPT violation, the Standard-Model Extension, is used to demonstrate factorization of the hadronic tensor at leading order in electroweak interactions for deep inelastic scattering and for the Drell-Yan process. Effects controlled by both minimal and nonminimal coefficients for Lorentz violation are explored, and the equivalent parton-model description is derived. The methodology is illustrated by determining cross sections and studying estimated attainable sensitivities to Lorentz violation using real data collected at the Hadronen-Elektronen Ring Anlage and the Large Hadron Collider and simulated data for the future US-based electron-ion collider.

CPT violation sensitivity of NoVA, T2K and INO experiments using $\nu$ and $\bar{\nu}$ oscillation parameters

Charge-Parity-Time (CPT) symmetry allows only identical oscillation parameters for $\nu$ and $\bar{\nu}$. But,different mass and mixing parameters for $\nu$ and $\bar{\nu}$ can give us possible hint for CPT violation or new physics. Using, different oscillation parameters for $\nu$ and $\bar\nu$, we find sensitivity for ($\Delta m^{2}_{32}-\Delta\bar{m}^{2}_{32}$) and ($\sin^{2}\theta_{23}-\sin^{2}\bar{\theta}_{23}$) for long-baseline (T2K and NOvA) and atmospheric neutrino (INO) experiments in different possible combinations of octant for neutrinos and anti-neutrinos. We present the joint sensitivity of the T2K, NOvA and INO experiments to such CPT violating observables.

Flavor-changing Lorentz and CPT violation in muonic atoms

Flavor-changing signatures of Lorentz and CPT violation involving muon-electron conversions in muonic atoms are studied using effective field theory. Constraints on coefficients for Lorentz violation at parts in 10 -12 GeV −1 for flavor-changing electromagnetic muon decays and parts in 10 -13 GeV −2 for flavor-changing 4-point quark-lepton interactions are extracted using existing data from the SINDRUM II experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. Estimates are provided for sensitivities attainable in the forthcoming experiments Mu2e at Fermilab and COMET at the Japan Proton Accelerator Complex.

Search for Violation of CPT and Lorentz Invariance in $B^0_s$ Meson Oscillations using the D0 Detector

A search is presented for CPT-violating effects in the mixing of $B^0_s$ mesons using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The CPT-violating asymmetry in the decay $B^0_s \rightarrow \mu^{\pm} D_s^{\mp} X$ as a function of sidereal phase is measured. No evidence for CPT-violating effects is observed and limits are placed on CPT- and Lorentz-invariance violating coupling coefficients.

Effects of the CPT-even and Lorentz violation on the Bhabha scattering at finite temperature

In this paper a Lorentz-violating CPT-even non-minimal coupling term is considered. A new interaction term between fermions and photons emerges. In this context, the differential cross-section for Bhabha scattering at finite temperature is calculated. The temperature effects are introduced using the Thermo-Field Dynamics (TFD) formalism. It is shown that the differential cross-section is changed due to both effects, Lorentz violation and finite temperature.

CPT- and Lorentz-Violation Tests with Muon $g$-2

The status of Lorentz- and CPT-violation searches using measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is reviewed. Results from muon g-2 experiments have set the majority of the most stringent limits on Standard- Model Extension Lorentz and CPT violation in the muon sector. These limits are consistent with calculations of the level of Standard-Model Extension effects required to account for the current 3.7{\sigma} experiment-theory discrepancy in the muon's g-2. The prospects for the new Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermilab to improve upon these searches is presented.

Demonstration of o-Ps detection with a cylindrical array of NaI detectors

Ortho-positronium (o-Ps) is a bound state of an electron and positron that can provide a means of searching for new physics. We searched and identified o-Ps in our cylindrical array of NaI(Tl) scintillators, developing a technique for tagging on o-Ps with any one of the 24 bars in the array. With high angular efficiency and this new technique, such an experimental setup could be used in a fundamental symmetries search. In particular, we explore the possibility of using such a setup with a search for CP- or CPT-violation in o-Ps.

Testing new physics in oscillations at a neutrino factory

A neutrino factory is a potential successor to the upcoming generation of neutrino oscillation experiments and a possible precursor to next-generation muon colliders. Such a machine would provide a well characterized beam of , , , and neutrinos with comparable statistics. Here we show the sensitivity of a neutrino factory to new oscillation physics scenarios such as vector neutrino non-standard interactions and CPT violation. We study two different potential setups for a neutrino factory with different assumptions on charge identification in the far detector. We find that a neutrino factory can improve over most of the current constraints on these scenarios and over forecasted constraints by DUNE, even when doubling DUNE's statistics. Additionally, we find that a neutrino factory can break degeneracies between the standard oscillation parameters and neutrino non-standard interaction parameters present at DUNE.

Relativistic spin precession in homogeneous background fields

The Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation, which describes the precession of the spin of a charged Dirac particle moving in a homogeneous electromagnetic field, is generalized to include also other homogeneous background fields. The treatment incorporates observable coefficients that govern operators of mass dimensions three through six in the underlying Dirac effective field theory. A relativistic formulation valid in arbitrary inertial frames is obtained. The results are applicable to searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model, including searches for Lorentz and CPT violation.

Studying Neutrino Oscillations and Searches for BSM Physics with Atmospheric Neutrinos in DUNE

The 40kt DUNE Far Detector, located at the Sanford Underground Research Facility, will of- fer unique capabilities to study atmospheric neutrinos. Due to the detector’s excellent energy resolutions, angular resolutions, and particle ID capabilities, atmospheric neutrino analyses in DUNE can provide valuable information about 3-flavor oscillations, despite the relatively modest statistics. These data provide a complementary analysis approach to beam neutrinos, and can help in resolving ambiguities in beam-only analyses. In this paper we show the prospects on the determination of the mass hierarchy, octant of θ 23 , and measurement of δ CP using atmospheric neutrinos in DUNE. Atmospheric neutrinos can also lead to a variety of beyond the standard model scenarios for neutrino transitions, propagation, and interactions. Examples that have been previously studied include CPT violation, Lorentz invariance violation, non-standard interactions, mass varying neutrinos and sterile neutrinos.

Search for CPT and Lorentz invariance violation in the muon $g -2$ experiment at Fermilab

The Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab (E989) aims to measure the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_{\mu}= (g-2)/2$, to a groundbreaking precision of $140$ ppb, obtaining a near four-fold increase in precision over the previous experiment, E821, at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The value of $a_{\mu}$ from BNL currently differs from the Standard Model prediction by $\sim 3.7$ standard deviations, suggesting the potential for new physics and therefore, motivating a new experiment.Because the theory predicts this number with high precision, testing the g-factor through experiment provides a stringent test of the SM and can suggest physics beyond the Standard Model. The goal of the Fermilab Muon $g-2$ experiment is to increase the statistical precision by more than a factor of 20 and reduce systematic errors by a factor of 3. By measuring muon precession rate ($\omega_a$) in an external magnetic field, the anomalous magnetic moment will be calculated. This is an incredibly challenging experiment with a unique opportunity to provide new insight into nature. \\ The $g-2$ data also provides a great opportunity for setting the most stringent limits on some of the Standard Model Extension CPT Lorentz violating (LV) parameters in the muon sector. One of the CPT and Lorentz violating signatures that we can look for using $g-2$ data is a sidereal variation of $\omega_a(t)$. Extensive simulation studies confirm that the sensitivity regarding the sidereal varation roughly scales with $\omega_a$ uncertainty. Hence, the $g-2$ experiment at FNAL should be able to reach limits of $\sim 5\times10^{-25}$ GeV. Because the CPT and LV analyses are essentially studies of variations in $\omega_a$ as a function of time and charge, performing an $\omega_a$ analysis sets the stage for the CPT and LV measurement. This dissertation focuses on the methodology of a fully functioning framework and analyzing the Fermilab Muon $g - 2$ Run 2 data containing $\sim 11$ billion events above an energy threshold of $1.7$~GeV.

Electric dipole moments of atoms, molecules, nuclei, and particles

A permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of a particle or system is a separation of charge along its angular momentum axis and is a direct signal of T violation and, assuming CPT symmetry, CP violation. For over 60 years EDMs have been studied, first as a signal of a parity-symmetry violation and then as a signal of CP violation that would clarify its role in nature and in theory. Contemporary motivations include the role that CP violation plays in explaining the cosmological matter-antimatter asymmetry and the search for new physics. Experiments on a variety of systems have become ever-more sensitive, but provide only upper limits on EDMs, and theory at several scales is crucial to interpret these limits. Nuclear theory provides connections from standard-model and beyond-standard-model physics to the observable EDMs, and atomic and molecular theory reveal how CP violation is manifest in these systems. EDM results in hadronic systems require that the standard-model QCD parameter of θ¯ must be exceptionally small, which could be explained by the existence of axions, also a candidate dark-matter particle. Theoretical results on electroweak baryogenesis show that new physics is needed to explain the dominance of matter in the Universe. Experimental and theoretical efforts continue to expand with new ideas and new questions, and this review provides a broad overview of theoretical motivations and interpretations as well as details about experimental techniques, experiments, and prospects. Here, the intent is to provide specifics and context as this exciting field moves forward.

Topological self-dual configurations in a Maxwell–Higgs model with a CPT-odd and Lorentz-violating nonminimal coupling

We have studied the existence of topological self-dual configurations in a nonminimal CPT-odd and Lorentz-violating (LV) Maxwell–Higgs model, where the LV interaction is introduced by modifying the minimal covariant derivative. The Bogomol’nyi–Prasad–Sommerfield formalism has been implemented, revealing that the scalar self-interaction implying self-dual equations contains a derivative coupling. The CPT-odd self-dual equations describe electrically neutral configurations with finite total energy proportional to the total magnetic flux, which differ from the charged solutions of other CPT-odd and LV models previously studied. In particular, we have investigated the axially symmetrical self-dual vortex solutions altered by the LV parameter. For large distances, the profiles possess general behavior similar to the vortices of Abrikosov–Nielsen–Olesen. However, within the vortex core, the profiles of the magnetic field and energy can differ substantially from ones of the Maxwell–Higgs model depending if the LV parameter is negative or positive.
