The Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach (CS TVA)

The Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach (CS TVA) StoryMap provides an in-depth overview of the products created during the CS TVA research effort. In detail, the StoryMap addresses the CS TVA Matrix, Database Version 2.0, Database Catalog, Workflow, and Data Availability Result Database, discussing how each was developed and implemented. Information on how the matrix, database, and database catalog are interconnected, and their usage is also explained. The workflow section provides information on the CS TVA product development from the data-gathering stage to the final data availability results. A section on an expansion of the CS TVA workflow that utilizes Natural Language processing (NLP) section was included. Finally, the Data Availability Results Database is discussed. These results provide data science-informed insights into potential data gaps when assessing the viability of carbon storage in a given area or region.

Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach (CS TVA) Database

The Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach (CS TVA) database was developed to support the implementation of the CS TVA Matrix to a national data availability assessment for technically viable carbon storage. This database leverages the efforts of multiple adjacent and overlapping databases by non-redundantly combining the databases into a single database along with additionally providing tags facilitating the CS TVA. The non-redundant aspect of the database permits an accurate assessment of the concentration of available data, aiding in spatial and categorical data gaps analysis relative to the individual CS TVA Matrix Components. Version 2.0 of the database is an expansion of Version 1.0. Version 2.0 was created to include additional data gathered to fill gaps in the existing data set. Downloading the CS TVA v2.0 database will result in two separate databases, the version 1.0 original .gdb, and a second addendum .gdb with the new data gathered, together these two databases make up v2.0. Please see the ReadMe file below for full details, metadata information, use disclaimer, and attributions.

Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach (CS TVA) Matrix

The Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach (CS TVA) Matrix is a knowledge framework developed to outline the information needed for geologic carbon storage. The CS TVA Matrix contains 5 categories, 14 sub-categories, and 47 components. This framework can be leveraged to assess the availability of data and information needed for a carbon storage project. The information categories of the matrix are tied to a list of required data using weighted mapping, published herein.

Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach (CS TVA): An Integrated Approach for Feasibility and Data Resource Assessment

There is currently a poor understanding and lack of workflow to understand the technical viability of carbon storage spatially. To address this gap, the multi-faceted Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach (CS TVA) is being developed to incorporate CO2 storage resources, environmental and socio-economic justice (EJ/SJ) factors to enable more comprehensive assessments. The CS TVA includes a (1) matrix framework, (2) an integrated and labeled database, (3) a data availability assessment workflow, and (4) spatial data availability assessment results. This approach leverages spatial and data science analytics to communicate data density, uncertainty, and gaps. The workflow can be applied in whole or in part, based on user needs.

Carbon Transport and Storage Planning and Viability Support Tools

The EDX disCO2ver Carbon Transport and Storage Planning and Viability Support Tools are made up of the Carbon Storage Planning Inquiry Tool (CS PlanIT, Justman et al. 2024) and the Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach Support Tool (CS TVA). Together, these tools support data access to support understanding data availability to support planning efforts for carbon transport and storage. The Carbon Storage Planning Inquiry Tool (CS PlanIT) is an online web mapping application designed to help users explore, query, and evaluate multiple data layers to support and accelerate carbon storage resource and feasibility assessments and planning efforts. CS PlanIT currently contains a range of datasets associated with geologic, technical, and infrastructure factors. The data sets can be filtered geographically for an area of interest to update statistics and charts within the dashboard. The dashboard is divided into different sections called widgets, relating to different steps in the carbon storage planning process. The resources in this submission include a link to PlanIT, as well as a data catalog and link to user documentation. The original citation for the CS PlanIT tool, which has now been integrated into the toolset here, was: - Devin Justman, Scott Pantaleone, Maneesh Sharma, Lucy Romeo, Paige Morkner, CS PlanIT (Carbon Storage Planning Inquiry Tool) , 6/28/2024, https://edx.netl.doe.gov/dataset/cs-planit-carbon-storage-planning-inquiry-tool, DOI: 10.18141/2377953 The Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach Support (CS TVA) Tool displays spatial data availability for the many components of Geologic Carbon Storage (GCS) technical viability assessment (Creason al 2025). Identifying sites suitable for GCS requires evaluating the intersection of myriad factors, including reservoir conditions, subsurface and surface hazards, infrastructure requirements, and energy community metrics. The technical viability of a site can only be confirmed for instances where all these factors have data available, and where those data support viability. New Matrix Framework to Determine Carbon Storage Technical Viability

Carbon storage is an integral component of reducing CO2 emissions. Research over the past two decades has developed workflows for volume assessments and economic project feasibility, providing necessary and useful tools to progress geologic carbon storage (GCS) projects. These workflows and assessments have focused primarily on determining the in-situ storage resource based on geologic and engineering parameters and do not integrate subsurface characterization with surface conditions, social factors, and environmental factors that may pose a benefit or impediment to the implementation of GCS. Furthermore, the data required to assess the technical viability of GCS are myriad and disparate. There is no current methodology that identifies technical viability criteria and systematically informs how to aggregate these factors for spatial assessments. To address this gap, the National Energy Technology Laboratory has developed a Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach (CS TVA) Matrix that incorporates a wide variety of factors to inform and accelerate screening for GCS site selection in the United States.

Multi factor Assessment for Decarbonization via Technically Viable Carbon Storage

Final poster presenting research under EDX4CCS portfolio, Task 21, on multi-factor assessment for technically viable carbon storage. To date, carbon storage viability assessments have focused on the technically recoverable storage resources to estimate the volume of carbon storage in reservoirs targeted for geologic carbon sequestration. The Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach (CS TVA) was developed to account for all factors determining the viability of carbon storage at a given site, including socioeconomic and environmental aspects in addition to the classic subsurface geologic assessment. Abstract accepted to the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting 2023.
