Fresnel diffraction imaging of surface nanostructure using coherent resonant x-ray scattering

We investigated surface nanostructures on an antiferromagnet MnBi 2 Te 4 using a novel imaging technique, direct (real)-space and real time coherent x-ray imaging (direct-CXI). This technique has provided new insights into antiferromagnetic textures, including the formation of anti-phase antiferromagnetic (AFM) domains and thermal dynamics of AFM domains and domain walls. While this method produces real-space images of AFM textures without requiring a complex imaging retrieval process, its underlying imaging mechanism has not been fully understood, limiting a deep understanding of AFM textures and the information they contain. By investigating the well-defined structural characteristics of the nanostructures fabricated on MnBi 2 Te 4 , we elucidate the imaging principle of this novel technique. We find that the observed images can be well explained by the Fresnel diffraction integral. Using a simple model from classical optics, our calculations successfully reproduce the experimentally observed images of the nanostructures. This demonstrates that direct-CXI not only provides straightforward real-space imaging but also contains phase information through its Fresnel diffraction integral.

Experimental investigation of H-mode pedestal turbulence using a charge exchange imaging diagnostic system at DIII-D

Microtearing modes (MTMs) (ω ~ ω de k θ ρ s ~ 0.1, k r ρ s ~ 0.3 – 1.0) are predicted to cause substantial electron thermal transport in the H-mode pedestal, limiting fusion performance on high-power devices. Localized 2D measurements of low-to-intermediate wavenumber density fluctuations in the edge of DIII-D H-mode plasmas suggest the presence of temporally intermittent or ‘bursting’ MTMs during the inter-ELM cycle in the steep gradient region. These measurements are obtained using a new intermediate radial resolution multichannel Charge eXchange Imaging (CXI) diagnostic that analyzes the intensity of the CVI emission at 529 nm. The mode is peaked near ρ = 0.97 with a radial full-width half maximum of 1.5–2.0 cm and a normalized density fluctuation amplitude peak of $\frac{dn_C}{n_C}$ ~ 5%, peaking near 60 kHz in the lab frame. The mode additionally features a broad spectral width from 30 to 180 kHz and propagates in the electron diamagnetic direction in the plasma frame. CXI measurements taken during discharges with high density and current ramps provide evidence that MTMs become unstable at finite collisionality and remain at nearly the same location in ρ-space despite scanning of rational surface position. This indicates that the location of the peak in the electron diamagnetic frequency is a stronger driving force than individual rational surfaces.

Identification and properties of molecular systems of potential use in solar-pumped lasers

The concepts and computational tools of theortical chemistry are used to investigate molecular properties needed in direct solar-pumped lasers. Compounds of the type RR'CXY, with R and R' organic groups, and X and Y halide atoms were identified as likely candidates because of their highly enhanced absorption coefficients over compounds with a single halide atom. The use of a combination of vibrational excitation followed by electronic excitation to enhance quantum yields at certain wavelengths is indicated. A self-consistent eikonal approximation to state-to-state transitions was tested for CH3I and is useful for other problems involving electronic energy and charge transfer. An approach to calculate potential energy surfaces and transition dipoles was developed which is based on the generation of eigenstates of the nonrelativisitc Hamiltonian followed by incorporation of the spin-orbit coupling by configuration interaction.
