Measurement of the t-channel single top quark cross section in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV

The single top quark t-channel production cross section is measured in proton-proton collisions at the CERN LHC at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV, using data recorded with the CMS detector in 2017, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 302 pb −1 , and resulting in the first CMS measurement of the process at that energy. Events with one electron or muon and two or more jets, among which at least one is identified as originating from a b quark fragmentation, are analyzed. The combined cross section of single top quark (tq) and single top antiquark ($\overline{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{q}$) production is $\sigma \left(\mathrm{tq}+\overline{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{q}\right)={25.5}_{-3.5}^{+3.6}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-3.9}^{+4.2}\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.5\left(\mathrm{lumi}\right)$ pb. The individual cross sections are measured to be $\sigma \left(\mathrm{tq}\right)={17.7}_{-2.7}^{+2.9}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-2.4}^{+2.6}\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.3\left(\mathrm{lumi}\right)$ pb and $\sigma \left(\overline{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{q}\right)={6.7}_{-1.6}^{+2.4}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-2.5}^{+2.1}\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.1\left(\mathrm{lumi}\right)$ pb. Their ratio is measured to be ${\mathcal{R}}_{\mathrm{t}-\mathrm{ch}}={2.7}_{-0.8}^{+1.5}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-0.3}^{+1.2}\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)$. The absolute value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element is found to be |f LV V tb | = 0.92 ± 0.09(exp) ± 0.01(theo). The measurements are in good agreement with the standard model predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics.

Characterization of Low-energy Ionization Signals in Silicon Detectors for the Nab Experiment

The Nab (Neutron a b) experiment is designed to measure the beta-antineutrino angular correlation in free neutron 𝛽 decay with an ultimate precision goal of 0.1%, providing input for tests of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix unitarity. This measurement is performed via detection of electrons and protons in delayed coincidence using custom large-area segmented silicon detectors. We present the characterization of one such detector system to establish the proton energy and timing response, using a dedicated proton accelerator. The detected proton peak was studied for 25, 30, and 35 keV incident protons on a set of detector segments and multiple cooling cycles over a one-year period. Ionization losses were consistent with models of the detector dead layer with thicknesses less than 100 nm. The detected proton peak was stable within the uncertainty from energy calibration (0.25 keV). The rise times of detector pulses from 109Cd and 113Sn conversion electron sources were used to extract the impurity density profile and establish a precise model for the detector timing response. The observed impurity density profile varied from (2±2)×109/cm3 at the center to (26±2)×109/cm3 at the edge. This impurity density profile was then used to characterize systematic effects in proton time-of-flight measurements due to detector pulse-shape effects; the resultant proton timing systematic uncertainties were below 0.3 ns, which is sufficient for the Nab experiment.

Novel approaches to determine B ± and B 0 meson production fractions

We propose novel methods to determine the ϒ ( 4 S ) → B + B − and ϒ ( 4 S ) → B 0 B ¯ 0 decay rates. The precision to which they and their ratio are known yields at present a limiting uncertainty around 2% in measurements of absolute B decay rates, and thus in a variety of applications, such as precision determinations of elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and flavor-symmetry relations. The new methods we propose are based in one case on exploiting the ϒ ( 5 S ) datasets, in the other case on the different average number of charged tracks in B ± and B 0 decays. We estimate future sensitivities using these methods and discuss possible measurements of f d / f u at the (HL-)LHC. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Measurement of the branching fraction of D s + → ℓ + ν ℓ via e + e − → D s * + D s * −

Based on 10.64 fb − 1 of e + e − collision data taken at center-of-mass energies between 4.237 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector, we study the leptonic D s + decays using the e + e − → D s * + D s * − process. The branching fractions of D s + → ℓ + ν ℓ ( ℓ = μ , τ ) are measured to be B D s + → μ + ν μ = ( 0.547 ± 0.02 6 stat ± 0.01 6 syst ) % and B D s + → τ + ν τ = ( 5.60 ± 0.1 6 stat ± 0.2 0 syst ) % , respectively. Measurement of single top-quark production in association with a W boson in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The inclusive cross section for the production of a single top quark in association with a Formula Presented boson is measured using Formula Presented of proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV. Events containing two charged leptons and at least one jet identified as originating from a b-quark are selected. A multivariate discriminant is constructed to separate the tW signal from the $t\bar{t}$ background. The cross section is extracted using a profile likelihood fit to the signal and control regions and it is measured to be σ tW = 75$^{+15}_{–14}$, in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction. The measured cross section is used to extract a value for the left-handed form factor at the Wtb vertex times the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |$f$ LV $V$ tb | of 0.97±0.10.

Observation of D s + → η ′ μ + ν μ , Precision Test of Lepton Flavor Universality with D s + → η ( ′ ) l + ν l , and First Measurements of D s + → η ( ′ ) μ + ν μ Decay Dynamics

By analyzing 7.33 fb − 1 of e + e − annihilation data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we report the observation of the semileptonic decay D s + → η ′ μ + ν μ , with a statistical significance larger than 10 σ , and the measurements of the D s + → η μ + ν μ and D s + → η ′ μ + ν μ decay dynamics for the first time. The branching fractions of D s + → η μ + ν μ and D s + → η ′ μ + ν μ are determined to be ( 2.235 ± 0.05 1 stat ± 0.05 2 syst ) % and ( 0.801 ± 0.05 5 stat ± 0.02 8 syst ) % , respectively, with precision improved by factors of 6.0 and 6.6 compared to the previous best measurements. Combined with the results for the decays D s + → η e + ν e and D s + → η ′ e + ν e , the ratios of the decay widths are examined both inclusively and in several ℓ + ν ℓ four-momentum transfer ranges. No evidence for lepton flavor universality violation is found within the current statistics. The products of the hadronic form factors f + , 0 η ( ′ ) ( 0 ) and the c → s Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element | V c s | are determined. The results based on the two-parameter series expansion are f + , 0 η ( 0 ) | V c s | = 0.452 ± 0.01 0 stat ± 0.00 7 syst and f + , 0 η ′ ( 0 ) | V c s | = 0.504 ± 0.03 7 stat ± 0.01 2 syst , which help to constrain present models on f + , 0 η ( ′ ) ( 0 ) . The forward-backward asymmetries are determined to be ⟨ A FB η ⟩ = − 0.059 ± 0.03 1 stat ± 0.00 5 syst and ⟨ A FB η ′ ⟩ = − 0.064 ± 0.07 9 stat ± 0.00 6 syst for the first time, which are consistent with the theoretical calculation. Measurement of Angular Coefficients of B ¯ → D * ℓ ν ¯ ℓ : Implications for | V c b | and Tests of Lepton Flavor Universality

We measure the complete set of angular coefficients J i for exclusive B ¯ → D * ℓ ν ¯ ℓ decays ( ℓ = e , μ ). Our analysis uses the full 711 fb − 1 Belle dataset with hadronic tag-side reconstruction. The results allow us to extract the form factors describing the B ¯ → D * transition and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element | V cb | . Using recent lattice QCD calculations for the hadronic form factors, we find | V cb | = ( 40.7 ± 0.7 ) × 10 − 3 using the Boyd-Grinstein-Lebed parametrization, compatible with determinations from inclusive semileptonic decays. We search for lepton flavor universality violation as a function of the hadronic recoil parameter w and investigate the differences of the electron and muon angular distributions. We find no deviation from standard model expectations. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

𝐵 → 𝜌⁢ℓ⁢$\bar{v}$ Resonance Form Factors from 𝐵→ 𝜋⁢𝜋⁢ℓ⁢$\bar{v}$ in Lattice QCD

The decay 𝐵 → 𝜌⁢ℓ⁢$\bar{v}$ is an attractive process for determining the magnitude of the smallest Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element, |𝑉 𝑢⁢𝑏 |, and can provide new insights into the origin of the long-standing exclusive-inclusive discrepancy in determinations of this standard-model parameter. This requires a nonperturbative QCD calculation of the 𝐵 → 𝜌 form factors 𝑉, 𝐴 0 , 𝐴 1 , and 𝐴 12 . The unstable nature of the 𝜌 resonance has prevented precise lattice QCD calculations of these form factors to date. Here, we present the first lattice QCD calculation of the 𝐵 → 𝜌 form factors in which the 𝜌 is treated properly as a resonance in 𝑃-wave 𝜋⁢𝜋 scattering. To this end, we use the Lellouch-Lüscher finite-volume formalism to compute the 𝐵 → 𝜋⁢𝜋 form factors as a function of both momentum transfer and 𝜋⁢𝜋 invariant mass, and then analytically continue to the 𝜌 resonance pole. This calculation is performed with 2 + 1 dynamical quark flavors at a pion mass of approximately 320 MeV, and demonstrates a clear path toward results at the physical point.

Averages of 𝑏-hadron, 𝑐-hadron, and 𝜏-lepton properties as of 2023

This paper reports world averages of measurements of 𝑏-hadron, 𝑐-hadron, and 𝜏-lepton properties obtained by the Heavy Flavor Averaging Group using results available before October 2023. In rare cases, significant results obtained several months later are also used. For the averaging, common input parameters used in the various analyses are adjusted (rescaled) to common values, and known correlations are taken into account. The averages include branching fractions, lifetimes, neutral meson mixing parameters, 𝐶⁢𝑃 violation parameters, parameters of semileptonic decays, and Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements.

Baryogenesis via the CKM Matrix with Minimal Flavor Violation

It is often claimed Standard Model CP violation is insufficient for baryogenesis. We present a counterexample using minimal flavor violation (MFV) in which all CP-violating effects arise from the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix. Our scenario involves a leptoquark field with MFV-preserving interactions whose decays to Standard Model particles yield the observed baryon asymmetry in the early universe. Unlike previous efforts to realize baryogenesis through the CP violation of the CKM matrix, our scenario does not require any time-variation of model parameters.

Measurement of the free neutron lifetime in a magneto-gravitational trap with in situ detection

Here, in this study, we publish three years of data from the UCNτ experiment performed at the Los Alamos Ultracold Neutron Facility at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. These data are in addition to our previously published data. Our goals in this paper are to better understand and quantify systematic uncertainties and to improve the lifetime statistical precision. We previously reported a value from our 2017–2018 data for the neutron lifetime of 877.75 ± 0.28 (statistical) +0.22–0.16 (systematic) s. We have collected an additional three years of data reported here for the first time. When all the data from UCNτ are averaged for 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022, we report an updated value for the lifetime of 877.83 ± 0.22 (statistical)+0.20–0.17 (systematic) s. We utilized improved monitor detectors, reduced our correction due to UCN upscattering on residual gas, and employed four different UCN detector geometries both to reduce the correction required for rate dependence and to explore potential contributions due to phase space evolution.

New graph-neural-network flavor tagger for Belle II and measurement of sin 2⁢𝜙 1 in 𝐵 0 → 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝐾$^0_ S$ decays

We present GFlaT, a new algorithm that uses a graph-neural-network to determine the flavor of neutral 𝐵 mesons produced in ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) decays. It improves previous algorithms by using the information from all charged final-state particles and the relations between them. We evaluate its performance using 𝐵 decays to flavor-specific hadronic final states reconstructed in a 362 fb −1 sample of electron-positron collisions collected at the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We achieve an effective tagging efficiency of (37.40 ± 0.43 ± 0.36%), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, which is 18% better than the previous Belle II algorithm. Demonstrating the algorithm, we use 𝐵 0 →𝐽/𝜓⁢𝐾$^0_ S$ decays to measure the mixing-induced and direct 𝐶⁢𝑃 violation parameters, 𝑆 = (0.724 ± 0.035 ± 0.009) and 𝐶 = (−0.035 ± 0.026 ± 0.029).

Gauge-invariant renormalization of four-quark operators

We study the renormalization of four-quark operators in one-loop perturbation theory. We employ a coordinate-space gauge-invariant renormalization scheme (GIRS), which can be advantageous compared to other schemes, especially in nonperturbative lattice investigations. From our perturbative calculations, we extract the conversion factors between GIRS and the modified minimal subtraction scheme ( MS ¯ ) at the next-to-leading order. As a by-product, we also obtain the relevant anomalous dimensions in the GIRS scheme. A formidable issue in the study of the four-quark operators is that operators with different Dirac matrices mix among themselves upon renormalization. We focus on both parity-conserving and parity-violating four-quark operators, which change flavor numbers by two units ( Δ F = 2 ). The extraction of the conversion factors entails the calculation of two-point Green’s functions involving products of two four-quark operators, as well as three-point Green’s functions with one four-quark and two bilinear operators. The significance of our results lies in their potential to refine our understanding of QCD phenomena, offering insights into the precision of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements and shedding light on the nonperturbative treatment of complex mixing patterns associated with four-quark operators. Flavor patterns of fundamental particles from quantum entanglement?

The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, which controls flavor mixing between the three generations of quark fermions, is a key input to the standard model of particle physics. In this paper, we identify a surprising connection between quantum entanglement and the degree of quark mixing. Focusing on a specific limit of 2 → 2 quark scattering mediated by electroweak bosons, we find that the quantum entanglement generated by scattering is minimized when the CKM matrix is almost (but not exactly) diagonal, in qualitative agreement with observation. With the discovery of neutrino masses and mixings, additional angles are needed to parametrize the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) matrix in the lepton sector. Applying the same logic, we find that quantum entanglement is minimized when the PMNS matrix features two large angles and a smaller one, again in qualitative agreement with observation, plus a hint for suppressed C P violation. We speculate on the (unlikely but tantalizing) possibility that minimization of quantum entanglement might be a fundamental principle that determines particle physics input parameters.
