Compressing data for storage in cache memories in a hierarchy of cache memories

An electronic device includes at least one compression-decompression functional block and a hierarchy of cache memories with a first cache memory and a second cache memory. The at least one compression-decompression functional block receives data in an uncompressed state, compresses the data using one of a first compression or a second compression, and, after compressing the data, provides the data to the first cache memory for storage therein. When the data is retrieved from the first cache memory to be stored in the second cache memory, when the data is compressed using the first compression, the compression-decompression functional block decompresses the data to reverse effects of the first compression on the data, thereby restoring the data to the uncompressed state and provides the data compressed using the second compression or in the uncompressed state to the second cache memory for storage therein.

Using predictions of outcomes of cache memory access requests for controlling whether a request generator sends memory access requests to a memory in parallel with cache memory access requests

An electronic device handles memory access requests for data in a memory. The electronic device includes a memory controller for the memory, a last-level cache memory, a request generator, and a predictor. The predictor determines a likelihood that a cache memory access request for data at a given address will hit in the last-level cache memory. Based on the likelihood, the predictor determines: whether a memory access request is to be sent by the request generator to the memory controller for the data in parallel with the cache memory access request being resolved in the last-level cache memory, and, when the memory access request is to be sent, a type of memory access request that is to be sent. When the memory access request is to be sent, the predictor causes the request generator to send a memory request of the type to the memory controller.

Cache management based on reuse distance

A cache of a processor includes a cache controller to implement a cache management policy for the insertion and replacement of cache lines of the cache. The cache management policy assigns replacement priority levels to each cache line of at least a subset of cache lines in a region of the cache based on a comparison of a number of accesses to a cache set having a way that stores a cache line since the cache line was last accessed to a reuse distance determined for the region of the cache, wherein the reuse distance represents an average number of accesses to a given cache set of the region between accesses to any given cache line of the cache set.

Supporting adaptive shared cache management

Embodiment of this disclosure provides a mechanism to use a portion of an inactive processing element's private cache as an extended last-level cache storage space to adaptively adjust the size of shared cache. In one embodiment, a processing device is provided. The processing device comprising a cache controller is to identify a cache line to evict from a shared cache. An inactive processing core is selected by the cache controller from a plurality of processing cores associated with the shared cache. Then, a private cache of the inactive processing core is notified of an identifier of a cache line associated with the shared cache. Thereupon, the cache line is evicted from the shared cache to install in the private cache.

GPU cache management based on locality type detection

Wavefront loading in a processor is managed and includes monitoring a selected wavefront of a set of wavefronts. Reuse of memory access requests for the selected wavefront is counted. A cache hit rate in one or more caches of the processor is determined based on the counted reuse. Based on the cache hit rate, subsequent memory requests of other wavefronts of the set of wavefronts are modified by including a type of reuse of cache lines in requests to the caches. In the caches, storage of data in the caches is based on the type of reuse indicated by the subsequent memory access requests. Reused cache lines are protected by preventing cache line contents from being replaced by another cache line for a duration of processing the set of wavefronts. Caches are bypassed when streaming access requests are made.

Method and apparatus for virtualizing the micro-op cache

Systems, apparatuses, and methods for virtualizing a micro-operation cache are disclosed. A processor includes at least a micro-operation cache, a conventional cache subsystem, a decode unit, and control logic. The decode unit decodes instructions into micro-operations which are then stored in the micro-operation cache. The micro-operation cache has limited capacity for storing micro-operations. When new micro-operations are decoded from pending instructions, existing micro-operations are evicted from the micro-operation cache to make room for the new micro-operations. Rather than being discarded, micro-operations evicted from the micro-operation cache are stored in the conventional cache subsystem. This prevents the original instruction from having to be decoded again on subsequent executions. When the control logic determines that micro-operations for one or more fetched instructions are stored in either the micro-operation cache or the conventional cache subsystem, the control logic causes the decode unit to transition to a reduced-power state.

Bit error protection in cache memories

A computing device having a cache memory that is configured in a write-back mode is described. A cache controller in the cache memory acquires, from a record of bit errors that are present in each of a plurality of portions of the cache memory, a number of bit errors in a portion of the cache memory. The cache controller detects a coherency state of data stored in the portion of the cache memory. Based on the coherency state and the number of bit errors, the cache controller selects an error protection from among a plurality of error protections. The cache controller uses the selected error protection to protect the data stored in the portion of the cache memory from errors.

Masked fault detection for reliable low voltage cache operation

Systems, apparatuses, and methods for implementing masked fault detection for reliable low voltage cache operation are disclosed. A processor includes a cache that can operate at a relatively low voltage level to conserve power. However, at low voltage levels, the cache is more likely to suffer from bit errors. To mitigate the bit errors occurring in cache lines at low voltage levels, the cache employs a strategy to uncover masked faults during runtime accesses to data by actual software applications. For example, on the first read of a given cache line, the data of the given cache line is inverted and written back to the same data array entry. Also, the error correction bits are regenerated for the inverted data. On a second read of the given cache line, if the fault population of the given cache line changes, then the given cache line's error protection level is updated.

Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Edge Caching in Wireless Networks

With the purpose to offload data traffic in wireless networks, content caching techniques have recently been studied intensively. Using these techniques and caching a portion of the popular files at the local content servers, the users can be served with less delay. Most of the content replacement policies are based on the content popularity, that depends on the users' preferences. In practice, such information varies over time. Therefore, an approach to determine the file popularity patterns must be incorporated into caching policies. In this context, we study content caching at the wireless network edge using a deep reinforcement learning framework with Wolpertinger architecture. In particular, we propose deep actor-critic reinforcement learning based policies for both centralized and decentralized content caching. For centralized edge caching, we aim at maximizing the cache hit rate. In decentralized edge caching, we consider both the cache hit rate and transmission delay as performance metrics. These proposed frameworks are assumed to neither have any prior information on the file popularities nor know the potential variations in such information. Via simulation results, the superiority of the proposed frameworks is verified by comparing them with other policies, including least frequently used (LFU), least recently used (LRU), and first-in-first-out (FIFO) policies.

Effectiveness and predictability of in-network storage cache for Scientific Workflows

Large scientific collaborations often have multiple scientists accessing the same set of files while doing different analyses, which create repeated accesses to the large amounts of shared data located far away. These data accesses have long latency due to distance and occupy the limited bandwidth available over the wide-area network. To reduce the wide-area network traffic and the data access latency, regional data storage caches have been installed as a new networking service. To study the effectiveness of such a cache system in scientific applications, we examine the Southern California Petabyte Scale Cache for a high-energy physics experiment. By examining about 3TB of operational logs, we show that this cache removed 67.6% of file requests from the wide-area network and reduced the traffic volume on wide-area network by 12. 3TB (or 35.4%) an average day. The reduction in the traffic volume (35.4%) is less than the reduction in file counts (67.6%) because the larger files are less likely to be reused. Due to this difference in data access patterns, the cache system has implemented a policy to avoid evicting smaller files when processing larger files. We also build a machine learning model to study the predictability of the cache behavior. Tests show that this model is able to accurately predict the cache accesses, cache misses, and network throughput, making the model useful for future studies on resource provisioning and planning.

Dynamic cache bypassing

A processing system fills a memory access request for data from a processor core by bypassing a cache when a write congestion condition is detected, and when transferring the data to the cache would cause eviction of a dirty cache line. The cache is bypassed by transferring the requested data to the processor core or to a different cache. Accordingly, the processing system can temporarily bypass the cache storing the dirty cache line when filling a memory access request, thereby avoiding the eviction and write back to main memory of a dirty cache line when a write congestion condition exists.

Adaptive cache management based on programming model information

A processing system selectively allocates space to store a group of one or more cache lines at a cache level of a cache hierarchy having a plurality of cache levels based on memory access patterns of a software application executing at the processing system. The processing system generates bit vectors indicating which cache levels are to allocate space to store groups of one or more cache lines based on the memory access patterns, which are derived from data granularity and movement information. Based on the bit vectors, the processing system provides hints to the cache hierarchy indicating the lowest cache level that can exploit the reuse potential for a particular data.

Analytical Modeling of Cache Behavior for Affine Programs

Modern optimizing compiler design integrates program transformation strategies aimed at reducing data movement to/from main memory by exploiting the data cache hierarchy. But in reality, the effect of these transformations on the actual cache miss count is ignored in compilers due to the lack of precise compile-time models of misses for hierarchical caches. The current state of practice for cache miss analysis is based on accurate simulation. However, simulation requires time proportional to the dataset/problem size as well as the number of distinct cache configurations of interest to be evaluated. This paper takes a fundamentally different approach, made possible by focusing on polyhedral programs with static control flow: instead of relying on costly simulation, this paper develops the first closed-form solution for exact modeling of misses in a set-associative cache hierarchy. It enabling simulation-less selection of program transformations at compile-time to optimize cache misses. A push-button tool implementing the approach is developed and used for extensive validation of the complete framework.

Implementing a micro-operation cache with compaction

Systems, apparatuses, and methods for compacting multiple groups of micro-operations into individual cache lines of a micro-operation cache are disclosed. A processor includes at least a decode unit and a micro-operation cache. When a new group of micro-operations is decoded and ready to be written to the micro-operation cache, the micro-operation cache determines which set is targeted by the new group of micro-operations. If there is a way in this set that can store the new group without evicting any existing group already stored in the way, then the new group is stored into the way with the existing group(s) of micro-operations. Metadata is then updated to indicate that the new group of micro-operations has been written to the way. Additionally, the micro-operation cache manages eviction and replacement policy at the granularity of micro-operation groups rather than at the granularity of cache lines.
