Reliable thermodynamic estimators for screening caloric materials

Reversible, diffusionless, first-order solid-solid phase transitions accompanied by caloric effects are critical for applications in the solid-state cooling and heat-pumping devices. Accelerated discovery of caloric materials requires reliable but faster estimators for predictions and high-throughput screening of system-specific dominant caloric contributions. We assess reliability of the computational methods that provide thermodynamic properties in relevant solid phases at or near a phase transition. Here, we test the methods using the well-studied B2 FeRh alloy as a “fruit fly” in such a materials genome discovery, as it exhibits a metamagnetic transition which generates multicaloric (magneto-, elasto-, and baro-caloric) responses. For lattice entropy contributions, we find that the commonly-used linear-response and small-displacement phonon methods are invalid near instabilities that arise from the anharmonicity of atomic potentials, and we offer a more reliable and precise method for calculating lattice entropy at a fixed temperature. Then, we apply a set of reliable methods and estimators to the metamagnetic transition in FeRh (predicted 346 ± 12 K, observed 353 ± 1 K) and calculate the associated caloric properties, such as isothermal entropy and isentropic temperature changes.

Fighting the climate crisis with caloric heat pumping: Innovations to enable widespread adoption

Caloric heat pumping is a cross-cutting thermal energy technology that can cover a wide range of applications and temperatures, from millikelvins to hundreds of kelvins, with a working medium that has zero global warming potential. The technology promises cost savings and high efficiency, having 60% Carnot efficiency demonstrated to date. The Energy Earthshots™ Initiative, launched by the U.S. Department of Energy, aims to fight the climate crisis and overcome technological barriers to a decarbonized economy. The initiative focuses on the development of energy solutions that increase efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and ensure affordability. Three out of eight Energy Earthshots™ look for alternative thermal energy technologies for extensive temperature ranges, from hydrogen liquefaction to metal-treating temperatures. Caloric heat pumping can fulfill all these requirements; however, at the current stage, caloric systems have limited presence in real-world applications. Further, this perspective discusses key efforts to address barriers hindering the widespread adoption of caloric technology. We focus on essential breakthroughs in and effective approaches to material discovery and draw a path to high-power-density, grid-interactive caloric systems to support achieving the ambitious net-zero carbon economy goal.

Systems and methods for additively manufacturing caloric microstructures

A method for additively manufacturing a microstructure from a caloric material includes providing a geometry of the microstructure to a processor of an additive manufacturing device, the geometry defining a plurality of microfeatures of the microstructure. The method also includes generating, via the processor, a three-dimensional (3D) model representative of the geometry of the microstructure, wherein one or more of the plurality of microfeatures are represented in the 3D model by a non-arcuate profile. Further, the method includes printing, via the additive manufacturing device, the microstructure from the caloric material according to the 3D model. As such, the non-arcuate profile reduces a file size of the 3D model as compared to an arcuate profile.

Caloric Effects Induced by Uniform and Non-uniform Stress in Shape-Memory Materials

A Ginzburg–Landau model is developed that is adequate to describe a square-to-rectangle martensitic transition with associated shape-memory and superelastic properties. Using this model we study caloric effects in the vicinity of the martensitic transition induced by stress and we compare the case of a uniform uniaxial stress and the case of a non-uniform continuous distribution of stresses that produce bending of the material. The former case corresponds to an elastocaloric effect and the latter corresponds to a flexocaloric effect. The aim of the work is to quantitatively compare both cases, which we show must be accomplished in terms of equal amounts of exchanged mechanical work. It is then obtained that the flexocaloric effect is more efficient for low exchanged work but less efficient for large exchanged work.

Caloric Restriction Impairs Regulatory T cells Within the Tumor Microenvironment After Radiation and Primes Effector T cells

Outcomes for triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) are poor and may be improved by increasing CD8{sup +} tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) to augment antitumor immunity. Radiation (RT) can promote immunogenic cell death with increased antitumor T cell activity but also stimulates suppressive regulatory T cells (Tregs). Because metabolic alterations affect immune homeostasis and prior studies show caloric restriction (CR) combined with RT improves preclinical TNBC outcomes, we hypothesized that CR augments RT, in part, by altering intratumoral immunity. Using an in vivo model of TNBC, we treated mice with ad libitum (AL) diet, radiation, a CR diet, or CR + RT, and demonstrated an immune suppressive environment with a significant increase in CD4{sup +} CD25{sup +}Foxp3{sup +} Tregs after RT but not in CR-fed mice. CD8:Treg ratio in CR + RT TIL increased 4-fold compared with AL + RT mice. In vivo CD8 depletion was performed to assess the role of effector T cells in mitigating the effects of CR, and it was found that in mice undergoing CR, depletion of CD8 T cells resulted in increased tumor progression and decreased median survival compared with isotype control–treated mice. In addition, PD-1 expression on CD3{sup +}CD8{sup +} T cells within the tumor microenvironment was significantly increased in CR + RT versus AL + RT treated mice as per immunofluorescence. Serum from breast cancer patients undergoing RT alone or CR and RT was collected pre- and postintervention, and a cytokine array demonstrated that patients treated with CR + RT had notable decreases in immunosuppressive cytokines such as IL-2Rγ, IL-10Rβ, and TGF-β2 and 3 compared with patients receiving RT alone. In conclusion, combining CR with RT decreases intratumoral Tregs, increases CD8:Treg, and increases PD-1 expression via a process dependent on CD8 T cells in a TNBC model. Breast cancer patients undergoing CR concurrently with RT also had significant reduction in immunosuppressive cytokine levels compared with those receiving RT alone.

Effect of Isovalent Cation Substitution on the Thermal, Caloric, and Magnetocaloric Properties of the (La{sub 1 –} {sub y}Eu{sub y}){sub 0.7}Pb{sub 0.3}MnO{sub 3} Manganites

Crystalline samples of the (La{sub 1 –} {sub y}Eu{sub y}){sub 0.7}Pb{sub 0.3}MnO{sub 3} (y = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and 0.8) manganite solid solutions have been grown. Temperature dependences of the specific heat, thermal expansion, and high-intensity magnetocaloric effect have been investigated. A comparative analysis of the effect of isovalent cationic substitution on the thermal and caloric parameters of the ferromagnetic phase transition has been made. It has been shown that the growth of the Eu atom concentration leads to a decrease in the phase transition entropy and an increase in the baric coefficient dT/dp. Field and temperature dependences of the magnetocaloric effect have been established. It is demonstrated that, varying the ratio of cations, one can obtain the solid solutions with the maximum magnetocaloric effect value in fields of up to 6 kOe in a temperature range of 90–340 K. Owing to the similar reduced relative cooling powers, the investigated solid solutions can be used as reference solid-state cooling media in designing the cascade cooling systems.

Spin-caloric resistance of Dirac plasma in a graphene Corbino device

The thermal resistance of a spin-polarized hydrodynamic Dirac plasma in graphene is considered. Here, a mechanism for the coupling of heat and spin flows is discussed, demonstrating that spin diffusion and spin thermocurrent modify viscous dissipation, leading to a significant enhancement of thermal resistance. Practical calculations are then presented for graphene devices in the Corbino geometry.

Ground-State Fermion Parity and Caloric Properties of a Superconducting Nanowire

The ground-state structure and fermion parity have been determined for a semiconductor nano-wire with a strong Rashba spin–orbit interaction and proximity-induced superconductivity placed in an external magnetic field under periodic boundary conditions. Allowance for the open boundaries is shown to cause the topologically nontrivial parameter region to be partitioned into a set of subregions with a different ground-state fermionic parity. This peculiarity is related to the emergence of edge modes with nonmonotonically changing excitation energies in the system as its parameters change. At the quantum transition point, at which the ground-state fermionic parity changes, the edge-mode energy is zero. The magneto- and electrocaloric effects are shown to be effective characteristics that allow the series of quantum transitions in an open nanowire to be identified experimentally. These effects at low temperatures exhibit an anomalous behavior in the parameter region for which topologically stable Majorana modes are realized in long nanowires.

From the Discovery of the Giant Magnetocaloric Effect to the Development of High‐Power‐Density Systems

Caloric cooling and heating promise an efficient and reliable alternative to ubiquitous vapor-compression technology. In 1976, the very first near-room-temperature caloric system is developed, but it took another 20 years for this technology to fully bloom and gain global attention. The discovery of the giant magnetocaloric effect in Gd 5 Si 2 Ge 2 and the advance of the first long-operating magnetic refrigerator, both in 1997, due to the Ames National Laboratory and Astronautics Corporation of America cooperation, are two milestones that sparked ongoing interest in caloric research, which continues to thrive to this day. This review presents a brief history of caloric heat pumping, from the discovery of the magnetocaloric effect to the most recent developments in materials and systems. The contributions of Ames National Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy are highlighted, celebrating its 30-year anniversary in caloric research and paying tribute to two outstanding scientists, Vitalij K. Pecharsky and Karl A. Gschneidner, Jr., who inspired the caloric community for decades. The paper concludes with insights into remaining research and development challenges that must be addressed to enable the market transition of caloric technology and its widespread adoption.

Impact of composition and symmetry energy on the temperature of quasiprojectiles simulated with antisymmetrized molecular dynamics

The equation of state describes the emergent physical properties of matter. Experimental data is needed to help constrain the equation of state for nuclear matter. These constraints can help distinguish between an “asy-stiff” and an “asy-soft” equation of state, which has astrophysical implications. One path to help constrain the models is to analyze the nuclear caloric curve; some experiments have shown dependence on neutron excess, and may thus be sensitive to the asymmetry. A difference in the caloric curve based on the asymmetry of the reconstructed quasiprojectile (QP) had been observed using 70 Zn on 70 Zn at 35 MeV/nucleon taken with the NIMROD array. Antisymmetrized molecular dynamics calculations were performed for the same system and deexcited with gemini++. Both Gogny (asy-soft) and Gogny-as (asy-stiff) data sets were generated. The particles were then filtered based on detector geometric acceptance and thresholds. From the accepted particles, the excitation energy and temperature were calculated in the same way as for experimental data. Additionally, filter effects on the observed nuclear caloric curves were investigated. A tendency for the asy-stiff nuclear caloric curves to have higher temperatures than their asy-soft counterparts was observed for a number of probes. In addition, some probes may show sensitivity to the reconstructed composition of the QP, but this is inconclusive due to high statistical fluctuations and a large dependence on the exact method of event selection.

Hidden variable in the electrocaloric effect of ferroics

Caloric effects allow for temperature control through adiabatic application of external fields and are actively explored for solid-state refrigeration. The common wisdom is that the application of ultrahigh fields enhances the effects, thus providing a route to their practical applications. Here, using the ferroelectric relaxor (Ba, Ca)(Ti, Zr)O 3 , we demonstrate that in ferroics, which are the prime candidates for such application, this is not true in general and that caloric effects can be enhanced through the reduction of the applied field. The explanation of such a counterintuitive response is in the dependence of the electrocaloric effect on the effective poling field that can be regarded as a “hidden” variable of the caloric effects.

High-performance multimode elastocaloric cooling system

Developing zero–global warming potential refrigerants has emerged as one area that helps address global climate change concerns. Various high-efficiency caloric cooling techniques meet this goal, but scaling them up to technologically meaningful performance remains challenging. We have developed an elastocaloric cooling system with a maximum cooling power of 260 watts and a maximum temperature span of 22.5 kelvin. These values are among the highest reported for any caloric cooling system. Its key feature is the compression of fatigue-resistant elastocaloric nitinol (NiTi) tubes configured in a versatile multimode heat exchange architecture, which allows the harnessing of both high delivered cooling power and large temperature spans. Our system shows that elastocaloric cooling, which only emerged 8 years ago, is a promising direction for commercializing caloric cooling.
