Investigating the effect of Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies extension on dark matter searches with Fermi-LAT data

Satellite galaxies of the Milky Way with high mass-to-light ratios and little baryon content, i.e., dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs), are among the most promising targets to detect or constrain the nature of dark matter (DM) through its final annihilation products into high-energy photons. Previously, the assumption that DM emission from dSphs is pointlike has been used to set strong constraints on DM candidates using data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). However, due to their high DM densities and proximity, dSphs actually have sufficient angular extension to be detected by the Fermi-LAT. Here, we perform a comprehensive analysis about the impact of accounting for angular extension in the search for gamma-ray DM signals toward known dSphs with Fermi-LAT. Further, we show that, depending on the dSph under consideration, limits on the DM cross section can be weakened by up to a factor of 2–2.5, while the impact on the stacked, i.e., combined, limits is at most 1.5–1.8 depending on the annihilation channel. This result is of relevance when comparing dSph limits to other multimessenger DM constraints and for testing the DM interpretation of anomalous “excesses.”

Preliminary Results from ADRIANO2 Test Beams

A novel high-granularity, dual-readout calorimetric technique (ADRIANO2) is under development as part of the research program of T1604 Collaboration. (Talk Presented at the 19th International Conference on Calorimetry in Particle Physics (CALOR 2022), University of Sussex, Sussex, UK, 16–20 May 2022). The building block of such a calorimeter consists of a pair of optically isolated, small size tiles made of scintillating plastic and lead glass. The prompt Čerenkov light from the glass can be exploited to perform high resolution timing measurements, while the high granularity provides good resolution of the spatial components of the shower. Dual-readout compensation and particle flow techniques can be applied simultaneously to the scintillation and to the Čerenkov section, providing excellent energy resolution as well as PID particle identification. These characteristics make ADRIANO2 a 6-D detector, suited for High Energy as well as High Intensity experiments. A report on the status of the ADRIANO2 project, preliminary measurements of light yield, and current and future R&D plans by T1604 Collaboration are discussed.

HTR solver: An open-source exascale-oriented task-based multi-GPU high-order code for hypersonic aerothermodynamics

In this study, the open-source Hypersonics Task-based Research (HTR) solver for hypersonic aerothermodynamics is described. The physical formulation of the code includes thermochemical effects induced by high temperatures (vibrational excitation and chemical dissociation). The HTR solver uses high-order TENO-based spatial discretization on structured grids and efficient time integrators for stiff systems, is highly scalable in GPU-based supercomputers as a result of its implementation in the Regent/Legion stack, and is designed for direct numerical simulations of canonical hypersonic flows at high Reynolds numbers. Additionally, the performance of the HTR solver is tested with benchmark cases including inviscid vortex advection, low- and high-speed laminar boundary layers, inviscid one-dimensional compressible flows in shock tubes, supersonic turbulent channel flows, and hypersonic transitional boundary layers of both calorically perfect gases and dissociating air.

Scaling Law Describes the Spin-Glass Response in Theory, Experiments, and Simulations

The correlation length ξ, a key quantity in glassy dynamics, can now be precisely measured for spin glasses both in experiments and in simulations. However, known analysis methods lead to discrepancies either for large external fields or close to the glass temperature. We solve this problem by introducing a scaling law that takes into account both the magnetic field and the time-dependent spin-glass correlation length. Here, the scaling law is successfully tested against experimental measurements in a CuMn single crystal and against large-scale simulations on the Janus II dedicated computer.

Tuning the temperature range of superelastic Ni-Ti alloys for elastocaloric cooling via thermal processing

Abstract Caloric cooling enlisting solid-state refrigerants is potentially a promising eco-friendly alternative to conventional cooling based on vapor compression. The most common refrigerant materials for elastocaloric cooling to date are Ni-Ti based superelastic shape memory alloys. Here, we have explored tuning the operation temperature range of Ni 50.8 Ti 49.2 for elastocaloric cooling. In particular, we have studied the effect of thermal treatments (a.k.a. aging) on the transformation temperature, superelasticity, and elastocaloric effects of Ni 50.8 Ti 49.2 shape memory alloy tubes. The isothermal compressive test revealed that the residual strain of thermally-treated Ni-Ti tubes at room temperature approaches zero as aging time is increased. Short-time aging treatment at 400 °C resulted in good superelasticity and elastocaloric cooling performance with a large tunable austenite finish ( A f ) temperature range of 24.7 °C, as determined from the A f temperature of the samples that were aged 5–120 min. The main reason of the property change is the formation of a different amount of Ni 4 Ti 3 precipitates in the NiTi matrix. Our findings show that it is possible to tailor the A f temperature range for development of cascade elastocaloric cooling systems by thermally treating a starting single composition Ni-Ti alloy.
