The structure of quantum singularities on a Cauchy horizon

Spacetime singularities pose a long-standing puzzle in quantum gravity. Unlike Schwarzschild, a generic family of black holes gives rise to a Cauchy horizon on which, even in the Hartle-Hawking state, quantum observables such as ⟨T μν ⟩ — the expectation value of the stress-energy tensor — can diverge, causing a breakdown of semiclassical gravity. Because they are diagnosed within quantum field theory (QFT) on a smooth background, these singularities may provide a better-controlled version of the spacetime singularity problem, and merit further study. Here, I highlight a mildness puzzle of Cauchy horizon singularities: the ⟨T μν ⟩ singularity is significantly milder than expected from symmetry and dimensional analysis. I address the puzzle in a simple spacetime ${\mathcal{W}}_P$, which arises universally near all black hole Cauchy horizons: the past of a codimension-two spacelike plane in flat spacetime. Specifically, I propose an extremely broad QFT construction in which, roughly speaking, Cauchy horizon singularities originate from operator insertions in the causal complement of the spacetime. The construction reproduces well-known outer horizon singularities (e.g., in the Boulware state), and remarkably, when applied to ${\mathcal{W}}_P$, gives rise to a universal mild singularity structure for robust singularities, ones whose leading singular behavior is state-independent. I make non-trivial predictions for all black hole Cauchy horizon singularities using this, and discuss extending the results beyond robust singularities and the strict near Cauchy horizon limit.

Gravitational duals to the grand canonical ensemble abhor Cauchy horizons

The gravitational dual to the grand canonical ensemble of a large N holographic theory is a charged black hole. These spacetimes - for example Reissner- Nordström-AdS - can have Cauchy horizons that render the classical gravitational dynamics of the black hole interior incomplete. We show that a (spatially uniform) deformation of the CFT by a neutral scalar operator generically leads to a black hole with no inner horizon. There is instead a spacelike Kasner singularity in the interior. For relevant deformations, Cauchy horizons never form. For certain irrelevant deformations, Cauchy horizons can exist at one specific temperature. We show that the scalar field triggers a rapid collapse of the Einstein-Rosen bridge at the would-be Cauchy horizon. Finally, we make some observations on the interior of charged dilatonic black holes where the Kasner exponent at the singularity exhibits an attractor mechanism in the low temperature limit.

Cauchy Drag Estimation For Low Earth Orbiters

Recent work on minimum variances estimators based on Cauchy distributions appear relevant to orbital drag estimation. Samples form Cauchy distributions which are part of a class of heavy-tailed distributions, are characterized by long stretches of fairly small variation, punctuated by large variations that are many times larger than could be expected from a Gaussian. Such behavior can occur when solar storms perturb the atmosphere. In this context, the present work describes an embedding of the scalar Idan-Speyer Cauchy Estimator to estimate density corrections, within an Extended Kalman Filter that estimates the state of a low Earth orbiter. In contrast to the baseline Kalman approach, the larger formal errors of the present approach fully and conservatively bound the predictive error distribution, even in the face of unanticipated density disturbances of hundreds of percent.

Violation of the Cauchy–Born rule in multi-principal element alloys

Multi-principal element alloys are a novel class of materials that are formed by combining multiple elements in high concentrations and show exceptional properties compared to conventional alloys. These alloys have high configurational entropy due to inherent atomic disorder. The Cauchy–Born rule is a popular homogenization method for linking atomistic to continuum length scales. In this Letter, we use ab initio density functional theory calculations to report that the Cauchy–Born rule, which holds in conventional alloys in the absence of defects, is not valid in multi-principal element alloys. Further, the violation of the Cauchy–Born rule in these alloys is attributed to the presence of atomic disorder due to which the deformations are inhomogeneous. Our results also show the deviations in deformation are related to the magnitude of the stretch and shear by power laws.

The Cauchy Problem for Boltzmann Bi-linear Systems: The Mixing of Monatomic and Polyatomic Gases

Abstract From a unified vision of vector valued solutions in weighted Banach spaces, this paper establishes the existence and uniqueness for space homogeneous Boltzmann bi-linear systems with conservative collisional forms arising in complex gas dynamical structures. This broader vision is directly applied to dilute multi-component gas mixtures composed of both monatomic and polyatomic gases. Such models can be viewed as extensions of scalar Boltzmann binary elastic flows, as much as monatomic gas mixtures with disparate masses and single polyatomic gases, providing a unified approach for vector valued solutions in weighted Banach spaces. Novel aspects of this work include developing the extension of a general ODE theory in vector valued weighted Banach spaces, precise lower bounds for the collision frequency in terms of the weighted Banach norm, energy identities, angular or compact manifold averaging lemmas which provide coerciveness resulting into global in time stability, a new combinatorics estimate for p -binomial forms producing sharper estimates for the k -moments of bi-linear collisional forms. These techniques enable the Cauchy problem improvement that resolves the model with initial data corresponding to strictly positive and bounded initial vector valued mass and total energy, in addition to only a $$2^+$$ 2 + moment determined by the hard potential rates discrepancy, a result comparable in generality to the classical Cauchy theory of the scalar homogeneous Boltzmann equation.

Fast direct numerical solution of the nonhomogeneous Cauchy-Riemann equations

A fast direct (noniterative) 'Cauchy-Riemann Solver' is developed for solving the finite-difference equations representing systems of first-order elliptic partial differential equations in the form of the nonhomogeneous Cauchy-Riemann equations. The method is second-order accurate and requires approximately the same computer time as a fast cyclic-reduction Poisson solver. The accuracy and efficiency of the direct solver are demonstrated in an application to solving an example problem in aerodynamics: subsonic inviscid flow over a biconvex airfoil. The analytical small-perturbation solution contains singularities, which are captured well by the computational technique. The algorithm is expected to be useful in nonlinear subsonic and transonic aerodynamics.

Variants and extensions of a fast direct numerical cauchy-riemann solver, with illustrative applications

Revised and extended versions of a fast, direct (noniterative) numerical Cauchy-Riemann solver are presented for solving finite difference approximations of first order systems of partial differential equations. Although the difference operators treated are linear and elliptic, one significant application of these extended direct Cauchy-Riemann solvers is in the fast, semidirect (iterative) solution of fluid dynamic problems governed by the nonlinear mixed elliptic-hyperbolic equations of transonic flow. Different versions of the algorithms are derived and the corresponding FORTRAN computer programs for a simple example problem are described and listed. The algorithms are demonstrated to be efficient and accurate.

A fast Cauchy-Riemann solver

The inhomogeneous Cauchy-Riemann equations in a rectangle are discretized by a finite difference approximation. Several different boundary conditions are treated explicitly, leading to algorithms which have overall second-order accuracy. All boundary conditions with either u or v prescribed along a side of the rectangle can be treated by similar methods. The algorithms presented here have nearly minimal time and storage requirements and seem suitable for development into a general-purpose direct Cauchy-Riemann solver for arbitrary boundary conditions.

Multivariate degradation modeling using generalized cauchy process and application in life prediction of dye-sensitized solar cells

Recently, the Generalized Cauchy (GC) process has been applied to capture a Long Memory (LM) phenomenon in product degradation modeling and life prediction. Compared with the traditional fractional Brownian motion that captures the LM using a single Hurst parameter, the GC process has two free parameters (Hurst and fractal dimension parameters) that flexibly capture both global LM and local irregularity. However, all existing GC-based degradation models are for a single Degradation Characteristic (DC). In this article, motivated by a real degradation problem of dye-sensitized solar cells that jointly exhibits multiple DCs, global LM, local irregularity and DC-wise cross-correlation, we propose a novel GC-based Multivariate Degradation Model (GC-MDM) to simultaneously capture the aforementioned effects. A maximum likelihood estimation approach is developed to estimate parameters of the GC-MDM. Subsequently, product life prediction based on the GC-MDM is developed. The proposed GC-MDM is validated through a simulation study and a physical experiment of dye-sensitized solar cells. Furthermore, results show that the proposed GC-MDM fundamentally improves the life prediction accuracy in comparison with conventional degradation models which significantly misestimate the uncertainty of product life.

Cauchy data space and multisymplectic formulation of conformal classical field theories

In this article we inspect the dynamics of classical field theories with a local conformal behavior. Our interest in the multisymplectic setting comes from its suitable description of field theories, and the conformal character has been added to account for field theories that are scale invariant, flat spaces, and because some conformal fields can be exactly solved or classified. In particular, we will solve the example of a conformal scalar field using the geometric Hamilton–Jacobi theory that is explicitly proposed for conformal fields on a multisymplectic manifold. To complete the geometric approach to study field theories, we propose the Hamilton–Jacobi theory for conformal fields in a Cauchy data space, in which space and time are split separately and the dynamics is depicted in an infinite-dimensional manifold.

On the Cauchy problem for Boltzmann equation modeling a polyatomic gas

In the present article, we consider the Boltzmann equation that models a polyatomic gas by introducing one additional continuous variable, referred to as microscopic internal energy. We establish existence and uniqueness theory in the space homogeneous setting for the full non-linear case, under an extended Grad-type assumption on transition probability rates, which comprises hard potentials for both the relative speed and internal energy with the rate in the interval 0,2, multiplied by an integrable angular part and integrable partition functions. The Cauchy problem is resolved by means of an abstract ordinary differential equation (ODE) theory in Banach spaces for the initial data with finite and strictly positive gas mass and energy, finite momentum, and additionally finite K* polynomial moment, with K* depending on the rate of the transition probability and the structure of a polyatomic molecule or its internal degrees of freedom. Moreover, we prove that polynomially and exponentially weighted Banach space norms associated with the solution are both generated and propagated uniformly in time.

Cauchy-type integral method for solving the linearized one-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson equation

Here, we present a method for solving the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equation, based on analyticity properties of the equilibrium and initial condition through Cauchy-type integrals, that produces algebraic expressions for the distribution and field, i.e., the solution is expressed without integrals. Standard extant approaches involve deformations of the Bromwich contour that give erroneous results for certain physically reasonable configurations or eigenfunction expansions that are misleading as to the temporal structure of the solution. Our method is more transparent, lacks these defects, and predicts previously unrecognized behavior.
