Proliferation transitions from a topological phase in 2+1 dimensions

We consider phase transitions out of a general topological phase in 2+1 dimensions. We assume that the transition is triggered by a single Abelian anyon, which becomes light near the transition and whose worldlines proliferate after the transition. (This proliferation is often referred to as “condensation.”) We describe the transition using a continuum field theory obtained by coupling the corresponding topological quantum field theory (TQFT) to a single complex scalar field associated with this anyon. With these assumptions, we find the most general relativistic field theory for such a transition. Even though for a given TQFT and a choice of anyon, there are infinitely many such field theories, the transition theory depends on only a single additional integer parameter. We analyze all these theories, their global symmetries, and their phases. In generic cases, the theory after the transition can be related to the original one via an Abelian hierarchy construction. In special cases, the theory after the transition is gapless, and with a particular deformation, it is related to the original TQFT by gauging an anomaly-free one-form global symmetry. We also explore the enrichment of this setup by a global U⁡(1) symmetry. In some cases, enriching the original TQFT is incompatible with the full transition theory. Lastly, we demonstrate our construction with many specific examples.

Boundary theory of the X-cube model in the continuum

We study the boundary theory of the Z N X-cube model using a continuum perspective, from which the exchange statistics of a subset of bulk excitations can be recovered. We discuss various gapped boundary conditions that either preserve or break the translation/rotation symmetries on the boundary, and further present the corresponding ground state degeneracies on T 2 × I. The low-energy physics is highly sensitive to the boundary conditions: even the extensive part of the ground state degeneracy can vary when different sets of boundary conditions are chosen on the two boundaries. Here, we also examine the anomaly inflow of the boundary theory and find that the X-cube model is not the unique (3 + 1)-dimensional theory that cancels the 't Hooft anomaly of the boundary.

Electromagnetic response and emergent topological orders in transition metal dichalcogenide MoTe 2 bilayers

Twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides, such as MoTe 2 , provide a versatile platform for exploring correlated topological phases. This work investigates the interplay between perpendicular magnetic and electric fields in tuning the electronic structure and emergent topological orders of twisted bilayer MoTe 2 (t-MoTe 2 ) across two distinct regimes: a low-twist-angle phase (θ ≈ 2.1°) hosting multiple Chern bands of identical Chern numbers per valley, and a higher-angle phase (θ ≈ 3.89°) featuring Haldane-like bands with opposite Chern numbers. Using a continuum model incorporating moiré potentials up to second harmonics, we compute the Hofstadter fractal spectra under applied fields, revealing Landau fan structures and magnetic-flux-dependent band topology. These fractal spectra are useful in studying emergent topological orders in terms of the composite fermion picture, where the statistical Chern-Simons flux is approximated as a uniform gauge field. We demonstrate that the system hosts both Jain-sequence fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) and non-Jain fractal FCIs with higher Chern numbers. As a result, the electric field suppresses composite fermion gaps and induces topological quantum phase transitions. Furthermore, our analysis extends to valley-contrasting flux attachment, proposing pathways to describe fractional quantum spin Hall states.

Dynamical effects from anomalies: Modified electrodynamics in Weyl semimetals

Here, we discuss the modified quantum electrodynamics from a time-reversal-breaking Weyl semimetal coupled with a U⁡(1) gauge (electromagnetic) field. A key role is played by the soft dispersion of the photons in a particular direction, say $\hat{z}$, due to the Hall conductivity of the Weyl semimetal. Due to the soft photon, the fermion velocity in $\hat{z}$ is logarithmically reduced under renormalization group flow, together with the fine-structure constant. Meanwhile, fermions acquire a finite lifetime from spontaneous emission of the soft photon, namely, the Cherenkov radiation. At low-energy E, the inverse of the fermion lifetime scales as τ -1 ~E/PolyLog⁡(E). Therefore, even though fermion quasiparticles are eventually well-defined at very low energy, over a wide intermediate energy window the Weyl semimetal behaves like a marginal Fermi liquid. Phenomenologically, our results are more relevant for emergent Weyl semimetals, where the fermions and photons all emerge from strongly correlated lattice systems. Possible experimental implications are discussed.

Multipartite entanglement structure of fibered link states

We study the patterns of multipartite entanglement in Chern-Simons theory with compact simple gauge group 𝐺 and level 𝑘 for states defined by the path integral on “link complements,” i.e., compact manifolds whose boundaries consist of 𝑛 topologically linked tori. We focus on link complements which can be described topologically as fibrations over a Seifert surface. We show that the entanglement structure of such fibered link complement states is controlled by a topological invariant, the monodromy of the fibration. Thus, the entanglement structure of a Chern-Simons link state is not simply a function of the link, but also of the background manifold in which the link is embedded. In particular, we show that any link possesses an embedding into some background that leads to Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger state (GHZ)-like entanglement. Furthermore, we demonstrate that all fibered links with periodic monodromy have GHZ-like entanglement, i.e., a partial trace on any link component produces a separable state. These results generalize to any three dimensional topological field theory with a dual chiral rational conformal field theory.

Non-standard axion electrodynamics and the dual Witten effect

Standard axion electrodynamics has two closely related features. First, the coupling of a massless axion field to photons is quantized, in units proportional to the electric gauge coupling squared. Second, the equations of motion tell us that a time-dependent axion field in a background magnetic field sources an effective electric current, but a time-dependent axion field in a background electric field has no effect. These properties, which manifestly violate electric-magnetic duality, play a crucial role in experimental searches for axions. Recently, electric-magnetic duality has been used to motivate the possible existence of non-standard axion couplings, which can both violate the usual quantization rule and exchange the roles of electric and magnetic fields in axion electrodynamics. We show that these non-standard couplings can be derived from SL(2,Z) duality, but that they come at a substantial cost: in non-standard axion electrodynamics, all electrically charged particles become dyons when the axion traverses its field range, in a dual form of the standard Witten effect monodromy. This implies that there are dyons near the weak scale, leads to a large axion mass induced by Standard Model fermion loops, and dramatically alters Higgs physics. We conclude that non-standard axion electrodynamics, although interesting to consider in abstract quantum field theory, is not phenomenologically viable.

Line operators in Chern-Simons-Matter theories and Bosonization in Three Dimensions II: Perturbative analysis and all-loop resummation

We study mesonic line operators in Chern-Simons theories with bosonic or fermionic matter in the fundamental representation. In this paper, we elaborate on the classification and properties of these operators using all loop resummation of large N perturbation theory. We show that these theories possess two conformal line operators in the fundamental representation. One is a stable renormalization group fixed point, while the other is unstable. They satisfy first-order chiral evolution equations, in which a smooth variation of the path is given by a factorized product of two mesonic line operators. The boundary operators on which the lines can end are classified by their conformal dimension and transverse spin, which we compute explicitly at finite ’t Hooft coupling. We match the operators in the bosonic and fermionic theories. Finally, we extend our findings to the mass deformed theories and discover that the duality still holds true.

On the symmetry TFT of Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory

Three-dimensional Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory has the peculiar property that its one-form symmetry defects have nontrivial braiding, namely they are charged under the same symmetry they generate, which is then anomalous. This poses a few puzzles in describing the corresponding Symmetry TFT in a four-dimensional bulk. First, the braiding between lines at the boundary seems to be ill-defined when such lines are pulled into the bulk. Second, the Symmetry TFT appears to be too trivial to allow for topological boundary conditions encoding all the different global variants. We show that both of these puzzles can be solved by including endable (tubular) surfaces in the class of bulk topological operators one has to consider. In this way, we are able to reproduce all global variants of the theory, with their symmetries and their anomalies. We check the validity of our proposal also against a top-down holographic realization of the same class of theories.

Integrating the full four-loop negative geometries and all-loop ladder-type negative geometries in ABJM theory

The decomposition of the four-point ABJM amplituhedron into negative geometries produces compact integrands of logarithmic of amplitudes such that the infrared divergence only comes from the last loop integration, from which we can compute the cusp anomalous dimension of the ABJM theory. In this note, we integrate L – 1 loop momenta of the L-loop negative geometries for all four-loop negative geometries and a special class of all-loop ladder-type negative geometries by a method based on Mellin transformation, and from these finite quantities we extract the corresponding contribution to the cusp anomalous dimension. We find that the infrared divergence of a box-type negative geometry at L = 4 is weaker than other negative geometries, then only tree-type negative geometries contribute to the cusp anomalous dimension at L = 4. For the all-loop ladder-type negative geometries, we prove and conjecture some recursive structures as integral equations in Mellin space and find that they cannot contribute zeta values like ζ 3 , ζ 5 to the cusp anomalous dimension.

The lion, the witch, and the wormhole: ensemble averaging the symmetric product orbifold

Abstract We consider the ensemble average of two dimensional symmetric product orbifold CFTs Sym N (𝕋 D ) over the Narain moduli space. We argue for a bulk dual given byNcopies of an abelian Chern-Simons theory coupled to topological gravity, endowed with a discrete gauge symmetry exchanging theNcopies. As a check of this proposal, we calculate the ensemble average of various partition and correlation functions of the symmetric product orbifold theory and compare the resulting expressions to gauge theory quantities in the bulk. We comment on the ensemble average of the tensionless string partition function on AdS 3 × S 3 × 𝕋 4 by considering the specific case ofD= 4 with the addition of supersymmetry.

Axion-gauge coupling quantization with a twist

The possible couplings of an axion to gauge fields depend on the global structure of the gauge group. If the Standard Model gauge group is minimal, or equivalently if fractionally charged color-singlet particles are forbidden, then the QCD axion’s Chern-Simons couplings to photons and gluons obey correlated quantization conditions. Specifically, the photon coupling can have a fractional part which is a multiple of 1/3, but which is determined by the gluon coupling. A consequence of this result is that, among all theories with a minimal gauge group and minimal axion coupling to gluons, the smallest possible axion-photon amplitude |g aγγ | arises for E/N = 8/3. This provides a new motivation for experiments targeting this axion-photon coupling.

The quantum $\mathrm{UV}$-$\mathrm{IR}$ map for line defects in $$ \mathfrak{gl} $$(3)-type class $\mathcal{S}$ theories

We consider the quantum UV-IR map for line defects in class S theories of $\mathfrak{gl}$(3)-type. This map computes the protected spin character which counts framed BPS states with spin for the bulk-defect system. We give a geometric method of computing this map motivated by the physics of five-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, and compute it explicitly in various examples. As a spin-off we propose a new way of computing a certain specialization of the HOMFLY polynomial for links in $\mathbb{R}^3$, as a sum over BPS webs attached to the link.

$T\bar{T}$ in JT Gravity and BF Gauge Theory

JT gravity has a first-order formulation as a two-dimensional BF theory, which can be viewed as the dimensional reduction of the Chern-Simons description of 3d 3 d gravity. We consider {T\overbar{T}} T T ¯ -type deformations of the (0+1) ( 0 + 1 ) -dimensional dual to this 2d 2 d BF theory and interpret the deformation as a modification of the BF theory boundary conditions. The fundamental observables in this deformed BF theory, and in its 3d 3 d Chern-Simons lift, are Wilson lines and loops. In the 3d 3 d Chern-Simons setting, we study modifications to correlators involving boundary-anchored Wilson lines which are induced by a {T\overbar{T}} T T ¯ deformation on the 2d 2 d boundary; results are presented at both the classical level (using modified boundary conditions) and the quantum-mechanical level (using conformal perturbation theory). Finally, we calculate the analogous deformed Wilson line correlators in 2d 2 d BF theory below the Hagedorn temperature where the principal series dominates over the discrete series.

Noncommutative gauge symmetry in the fractional quantum Hall effect

Abstract We show that a system of particles on the lowest Landau level can be coupled to a probe U(1) gauge field$$ \mathcal{A} $$ A μ in such a way that the theory is invariant under a noncommutative U(1) gauge symmetry. While the temporal component$$ \mathcal{A} $$ A 0 of the probe field is coupled to the projected density operator, the spatial components$$ \mathcal{A} $$ A i are best interpreted as quantum displacements, which distort the interaction potential between the particles. We develop a Seiberg-Witten-type map from the noncommutative U(1) gauge symmetry to a simpler version, which we call “baby noncommutative” gauge symmetry, where the Moyal brackets are replaced by the Poisson brackets. The latter symmetry group is isomorphic to the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms. By using this map, we resolve the apparent contradiction between the noncommutative gauge symmetry, on the one hand, and the particle-hole symmetry of the half-filled Landau level and the presence of the mixed Chern-Simons terms in the effective Lagrangian of the fractional quantum Hall states, on the other hand. We outline the general procedure which can be used to write down effective field theories which respect the noncommutative U(1) symmetry.

The inflated Chern-Simons number in spectator chromo-natural inflation

The chromo-natural inflation (CNI) scenario predicts a potentially detectable chiral gravitational wave signal, generated by a Chern-Simons coupling between a rolling scalar axion field and an SU(2) gauge field with an isotropy-preserving classical background during inflation. However, the generation of this signal requires a very large integer Chern-Simons level, which can be challenging to explain or embed in a UV-complete model. We show that this challenge persists in the phenomenologically viable spectator field CNI (S-CNI) model. Furthermore, we show that a clockwork scenario giving rise to a large integer as a product of small integers can never produce a Chern-Simons level large enough to have successful S-CNI phenomenology. We briefly discuss other constraints on the model, both in effective field theory based on partial-wave unitarity bounds and in quantum gravity based on the Weak Gravity Conjecture, which may be relevant for further explorations of alternative UV completions.

Anomalous hydrodynamics effective actions from holography

We derive an effective action for charged plasmas with an anomalous (abelian) global current charge current using holography. The holographic description is captured by the dynamics of an Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in an asymptotically AdS spacetime. The ’t Hooft anomaly contribution, which is encoded in the Chern-Simons term, contributes at the Gaussian order in the effective action only in the momentum diffusion sector, where it leads to chiral shear waves. However, as we demonstrate, beyond the Gaussian order, there is non-trivial imprint of the parity-violating anomaly term in sound and charge diffusion dynamics as well.
