Resonant shattering flares as asteroseismic tests of chiral effective field theory

Chiral effective field theory (𝜒⁢EFT) has proved to be a powerful microscopic framework for predicting the properties of neutron-rich nuclear matter with quantified theoretical uncertainties up to about twice the nuclear saturation density. Tests of 𝜒⁢EFT predictions are typically performed at low densities using nuclear experiments, with neutron star (NS) constraints only being considered at high densities. In this work, we discuss how asteroseismic quasinormal modes within NSs could be used to constrain specific matter properties at particular densities not just the integrated quantities to which bulk NS observables are sensitive. We focus on the crust-core interface mode, showing that measuring this mode's frequency would provide a meaningful test of 𝜒⁢EFT at densities around half the saturation density. Conversely, we use nuclear matter properties predicted by 𝜒⁢EFT to estimate that this mode's frequency is around 185 ± 50Hz. Asteroseismic observables such as resonant phase shifts in gravitational-wave signals and multimessenger resonant shattering flare timings, therefore, have the potential to provide useful tests of 𝜒⁢EFT.

Relativistic mean-field theories for neutron-star physics based on chiral effective field theory

We describe and implement a procedure for determining the couplings of a relativistic mean-field theory (RMFT) that is optimized for application to neutron star phenomenology. In the standard RMFT approach, the couplings are constrained by comparing the theory's predictions for symmetric matter at saturation density with measured nuclear properties. The theory is then applied to neutron stars which consist of neutron-rich matter at densities ranging up to several times saturation density, which allows for additional astrophysical constraints. In our approach, rather than using the RMFT to extrapolate from symmetric to neutron-rich matter and from finite-sized nuclei to uniform matter, we fit the RMFT to properties of uniform pure neutron matter obtained from chiral effective field theory. Chiral effective field theory incorporates the experimental data for nuclei in the framework of a controlled expansion for nuclear forces valid at nuclear densities and enables us to account for theoretical uncertainties when fitting the RMFT. We construct four simple RMFTs that span the uncertainties provided by chiral effective field theory for neutron matter, and are consistent with current astrophysical constraints on the equation of state. Lastly, our RMFTs can be used to model the properties of neutron-rich matter across the vast range of densities and temperatures encountered in neutron stars and their mergers.

Electroweak Currents from Chiral Effective Field Theory

Since the pioneering work of Weinberg, Chiral Effective Field Theory (EFT) has been widely and successfully utilized in nuclear physics to study many-nucleon interactions and associated electroweak currents. Here, nuclear EFT has now developed into an intense field of research and is applied to study light to medium mass nuclei. In this contribution, we focus on the development of electroweak currents from EFT and present applications to selected nuclear electroweak observables.

Magnetic moments of A = 3 nuclei obtained from chiral effective field theory operators

Chiral effective field theory (χEFT) provides a framework for obtaining internucleon interactions in a systematically improvable fashion from first principles, while also providing for the derivation of consistent electroweak current operators. In this study, we apply consistently derived interactions and currents towards calculating the magnetic dipole moments of the A = 3 systems 3 H and 3 He. We focus here on LENPIC interactions obtained using semilocal coordinate-space (SCS) regularization. Starting from the momentum-space representation of the LENPIC χEFT vector current, we derive the SCS-regularized magnetic dipole operator up through next-to-next-to-leading order (N 2 LO). We then carry out no-core shell-model calculations for 3 H and 3 He systems using the SCS LENPIC interaction at N 2 LO in χEFT and evaluate the magnetic dipole moments obtained using the consistently derived one-nucleon and two-nucleon electromagnetic currents. As anticipated by prior results with χEFT currents, the current corrections through N 2 LO provide improved, but not yet complete, agreement with experiment for the 3 H and 3 He magnetic dipole moments.

Revisiting proton–proton fusion in chiral effective field theory

We calculate the S-factor for proton–proton fusion using chiral effective field theory interactions and currents. By performing order-by-order calculations with a variety of chiral interactions that are regularized and calibrated in different ways, we assess the uncertainty in the S-factor from the truncation of the effective field theory expansion and from the sensitivity of the S-factor to the short-distance axial current determined from three- and four-nucleon observables. We find that S(0) = (4.100 ± 0.024(syst) ± 0.013(stat) ± 0.008(g$_{A}$)) × 10$^{−23}$ MeV fm$^{2}$, where the three uncertainties arise, respectively, from the truncation of the effective field theory expansion, use of the two-nucleon axial current fit to few-nucleon observables and variation of the axial coupling constant within the recommended range. The increased value of S(0) compared to previous calculations is mainly driven by an increase in the recommended value for the axial coupling constant and is in agreement with a recent analysis based on pionless effective field theory.

Chiral Effective Field Theory and the High-Density Nuclear Equation of State

Born in the aftermath of core-collapse supernovae, neutron stars contain matter under extraordinary conditions of density and temperature that are difficult to reproduce in the laboratory. In recent years, neutron star observations have begun to yield novel insights into the nature of strongly interacting matter in the high-density regime where current theoretical models are challenged. At the same time, chiral effective field theory has developed into a powerful framework to study nuclear matter properties with quantified uncertainties in the moderate-density regime for modeling neutron stars. In this article, we review recent developments in chiral effective field theory and focus on many-body perturbation theory as a computationally efficient tool for calculating the properties of hot and dense nuclear matter. We also demonstrate how effective field theory enables statistically meaningful comparisons among nuclear theory predictions, nuclear experiments, and observational constraints on the nuclear equation of state.

Uncertainty Estimation and Anomaly Detection in Chiral Effective Field Theory Studies of Key Nuclear Electroweak Processes

Chiral effective field theory (χEFT) is a powerful tool for studying electroweak processes in nuclei. I discuss χEFT calculations of three key nuclear electroweak processes: primordial deuterium production, proton-proton fusion, and magnetic dipole excitations of 48 Ca. Further, this article showcases χEFT’s ability to quantify theory uncertainties at the appropriate level of rigor for addressing the different precision demands of these three processes.

Local position-space two-nucleon potentials from leading to fourth order of chiral effective field theory

We present local, position-space chiral NN potentials through four orders of chiral effective field theory ranging from leading order (LO) to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N 3 LO, fourth order) of the Δ-less version of the theory. The long-range parts of these potentials are fixed by the very accurate πN LECs as determined in the Roy-Steiner equations analysis. At the highest order (N 3 LO), the NN data below 190 MeV laboratory energy are reproduced with the respectable χ 2 /datum of 1.45. A comparison of the N 3 LO potential with the phenomenological Argonne v 18 (AV18) potential reveals substantial agreement between the two potentials in the intermediate range ruled by chiral symmetry, thus, providing a chiral underpinning for the phenomenological AV18 potential. Our chiral NN potentials may serve as a solid basis for systematic ab initio calculations of nuclear structure and reactions that allow for a comprehensive error analysis. In particular, the order by order development of the potentials will make possible a reliable determination of the truncation error at each order. Our new family of local position-space potentials differs from existing potentials of this kind by a weaker tensor force as reflected in relatively low D-state probabilities of the deuteron (P D ≲ 4.0 % for our N 3 LO potentials) and predictions for the triton binding energy above 8.00 MeV (from two-body forces alone). As a consequence, our potentials may lead to different predictions when applied to light and intermediate-mass nuclei in ab initio calculations and, potentially, help solve some of the outstanding problems in microscopic nuclear structure.

The most recent progresses made within the framework of chiral effective field theory for few-nucleon structure and low-energy reactions are here presented. In particular, for the 𝐴 = 2 sector, the study of muon capture on deuteron is reviewed. Then, the results obtained using the Hyperspherical Harmonics ab-initiomethod for the 4He monopole form factor and the 3He(®𝑛, 𝑝) 3H parity-conserving asymmetry are described.

2 νββ spectrum in chiral effective field theory

We investigate two-neutrino double beta decay (2νββ) in chiral effective field theory. We find contributions from weak magnetism and double-weak pion-exchange at next-to-leading-order in the chiral power counting. We discuss the impact of the chiral corrections on the electron spectra and find that they should be included in analyses of 2νββ decay that aim to uncover new physics signatures in the electron spectrum. We illustrate this point by revisiting the effect of sterile neutrinos and non-standard charged interactions. We also find that the pion-exchange contributions involve nuclear matrix elements that are related to those appearing in neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ). We investigate whether the 0νββ nuclear matrix elements can be obtained from detailed measurements of the energy spectrum of the outgoing electrons in 2νββ transitions.

The importance of few-nucleon forces in chiral effective field theory

We study the importance of few-nucleon forces in chiral effective field theory for describing many-nucleon systems. A combinatorial argument suggests that three-nucleon forces-which are conventionally regarded as next-to-next-to-leading order-should accompany the two-nucleon force already at leading order (LO) starting with mass number $A$ ≃10–20. We find that this promotion enables the first realistic description of the 16 O ground state based on a renormalization-group-invariant LO interaction. We also performed coupled-cluster calculations of the equation of state for symmetric nuclear matter and our results indicate that LO four-nucleon forces could play a crucial role for describing heavy-mass nuclei. In conclusion, the enhancement mechanism we found is very general and could be important also in other many-body problems.

The Equation of State of Neutron-Rich Matter at Fourth Order of Chiral Effective Field Theory and the Radius of a Medium-Mass Neutron Star

We report neutron star predictions based on our most recent equations of state. These are derived from chiral effective field theory, which allows for a systematic development of nuclear forces, order by order. We utilize high-quality two-nucleon interactions and include all three-nucleon forces up to fourth order in the chiral expansion. Our ab initio predictions are restricted to the domain of applicability of chiral effective field theory. However, stellar matter in the interior of neutron stars can be up to several times denser than normal nuclear matter at saturation, and its composition is essentially unknown. Following established practices, we extend our microscopic predictions to higher densities matching piecewise polytropes. The radius of the average-size neutron star, about 1.4 solar masses, is sensitive to the pressure at normal densities, and thus it is suitable to constrain ab initio theories of the equation of state. For this reason, we focus on the radius of medium-mass stars. We compare our results with other theoretical predictions and recent constraints.

Constructing chiral effective field theory around unnatural leading-order interactions

A momentum-dependent formulation based on a stationary spin-0 and isospin-1 dibaryon field is proposed to improve convergence of chiral effective field theory in the 1 S 0 channel of NN scattering. Although the two-parameter leading-order interaction appears to be unnatural, it nevertheless has the necessary features of an effective field theory. A rapid order-by-order convergence is found in 1 S 0 . As an application beyond the two-body level, the triton binding energy is studied and compared to standard chiral effective field theory with partly perturbative pions. Here, the consistency of the chiral Lagrangian for the new formulation is examined by working out the pionic radiative corrections, and consequences of nontrivial chiral-connection terms are discussed.

Chiral Effective Field Theory’s Impact on Advancing Quantum Monte Carlo Methods

Thirty years ago, Steven Weinberg published his seminal paper on “Nuclear Forces from chiral Lagrangians” which has revolutionized the field of theoretical nuclear physics. Nowadays, interactions derived from chiral effective field theory are routinely used to describe nuclear systems ranging from atomic nuclei to the dense matter explored in the core of neutron stars with theoretical uncertainty estimates. Here, in our contribution to the special issue “Celebrating 30 years of Steven Weinberg’s paper Nuclear Forces from Chiral Lagrangians”, we focus on the impact that chiral effective field theory interactions have played in advancing microscopic studies of atomic nuclei and the nuclear-matter equation of state using quantum Monte Carlo methods.

Tabulated equations of state from models informed by chiral effective field theory

Abstract We construct four equation of state (EoS) tables, tabulated over a range of temperatures, densities, and charge fractions, relevant for neutron star applications such as simulations of neutron star mergers. The EoS are computed from a relativistic mean-field theory constrained by the pure neutron matter EoS from chiral effective field theory, inferred properties of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter, and astrophysical observations of neutron star structure. To model nuclear matter at low densities, we attach an EoS that models inhomogeneous nuclear matter at arbitrary temperatures and charge fractions. The four EoS tables we develop are available from the CompOSE EoS repository https://compose.obspm.fr/eos/297 and gitlab.com/ahaber/qmc-rmf-tables .

Maximally local two-nucleon interactions at N 3 LO in Δ -less chiral effective field theory

We present new maximally local two-nucleon interactions derived in Δ -less chiral effective field theory up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order ( N 3 LO ), which include all contact and pion-exchange contributions to the nuclear Hamiltonian up to this order. Our interactions are fit to nucleon-nucleon phase shifts using a Bayesian statistical approach, and explore a wide cutoff range from 0.6 – 0.9 fm ( ≈ 660 – 440 MeV ). These interactions can be straightforwardly employed in quantum Monte Carlo methods, such as the auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo method. Together with local three-nucleon forces, calculations with these new interactions will provide improved benchmarks for the structure of atomic nuclei and serve as crucial input to analyses of astrophysical phenomena of neutron stars, such as binary neutron-star mergers. Analysis of the neutron matter equation of state and the symmetry energy up to fourth order of chiral effective field theory

We present predictions for the neutron matter equation of state, from leading to fourth order of chiral effective field theory, using recently developed, accurate chiral nucleon-nucleon potentials. For the many-body method, we employ the nonperturbative particle-particle ladder approximation, that is, we solve the G-matrix equation. Furthermore, we find the impact of subleading three-neutron forces to be mild and attractive. We also show order-by-order predictions for the symmetry energy, and discuss its density dependence in relation to empirical constraints. For the nuclear matter equation of state, in this work we adopt an empirical parametrization with good saturation properties. This is to highlight, specifically, the energy and pressure in neutron matter, particularly when comparing with empirical constraints.

Magnetic structure of few-nucleon systems at high momentum transfers in a chiral effective field theory approach

The five low-energy constants (LECs) in the electromagnetic current derived in chiral effective field theory ( χ EFT ) up to one loop are determined by a simultaneous fit to the A = 2 – 3 nuclei magnetic moments and to the deuteron magnetic form factor and threshold electrodisintegration at backward angles over a wide range of momentum transfers. The resulting parametrization then yields predictions for the 3 He/ 3 H magnetic form factors in excellent accord with the experimental values for momentum transfers ranging up to ≈0.8 GeV/c, beyond the expected regime of validity of the χEFT approach. The calculations are based on last-generation two-nucleon interactions including high orders in the chiral expansion and derived by Entem, Machleidt, and Nosyk [Phys. Rev. C 96, 024004 (2017)] and by Piarulli et al. [Phys. Rev. C 94, 054007 (2016)], using different χEFT formulations. In the A = 3 calculations, (chiral) three-nucleon interactions are also accounted for. The model dependence resulting from these different formulations of the interactions is found to be mild for momentum transfer below ≈0.8 GeV/c . Further, an analysis of the convergence of the chiral expansion is also provided.
