Nonlocal chiral anomaly and generalized parton distributions

We discuss the nonlocal generalization of the QCD chiral anomaly along the light cone and derive relations between twist-two, twist-three, and twist-four generalized parton distributions (GPDs) mediated by the anomaly. We further establish the connection to the “anomaly pole” in the GPD E ˜ recently identified in the perturbative calculation of the Compton scattering amplitudes, and demonstrate its cancellation at the GPD level. Our work helps elucidate the previously unexplored connection between GPDs, the chiral anomaly, and the mass generation of the η ′ meson. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Tuning Chiral Anomaly Signature in a Dirac Semimetal via Fast-Ion Implantation

Cd 3 As 2 is a Dirac semimetal that hosts a chiral anomaly, functioning as a platform to realize energy applications. We use fast-ion implantation to enhance the negative longitudinal magnetoresistance (NLMR)─signature of a chiral anomaly─in Nb-doped Cd 3 As 2 thin films. High-energy ion implantation is used to investigate semiconductors and nuclear materials but is rarely employed to study topological materials. We use electrical transport and transmission electron microscopy to characterize the NLMR and crystallinity of Nb-doped Cd 3 As 2 . We find surface-doped thin films display a maximum NLMR around B = 7 T and bulk-doped thin films display a maximum over B = 9 T─all while maintaining crystallinity. This is more than a 100% relative enhancement of the maximum NLMR compared to pristine Cd 3 As 2 . As a result, our work demonstrates the potential of high-energy ion implantation as a practical route to explore chiralitronic properties in topological semimetals.

Chiral anomalies and Wilson fermions

The Wilson formulation of fermions in lattice gauge theory provides a unified description of the chiral anomalies in the standard model. The discrete Dirac operator diagonalizes into a series of 2 × 2 blocks. In each block the possible eigenvalues either form a complex pair or separate into two real eigenvalues that have specific chirality. The collision of these pairs of eigenvalues occurs outside the perturbative region and provides a path between topological sectors.

William A. Bardeen: A life in physics and the legacy of the chiral anomaly

William Allan Bardeen (September 15, 1941 − November 18, 2025) was an American theoretical physicist who worked at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. He is renowned for his foundational work on the chiral anomaly, the Adler-Bardeen theorem, the non-Abelian anomaly and gravitational anomalies. He was instrumental in the development of quantum chromodynamics and its applications, such as semileptonic decays and the Λ $\overline{MS}$ scheme frequently used in perturbative analysis of high energy processes involving strong interactions. Bardeen also played a major role in developing a theory of dynamical breaking of electroweak symmetry via top quark condensates, leading to one of the first composite Brout-Englert-Higgs boson models. His work on the chiral symmetry dynamics of heavy-light quark bound states correctly predicted abnormally long-lived resonances which are chiral symmetry partners of the ground state.

Chiral anomaly: From vacuum to Columbia plot

Here, we use a low-energy effective approach, the extended linear sigma model, to study realizations of the U(1) A anomaly with different operators, linear and quadratic in the ’t Hooft determinant. After discussing the parameterization in agreement with vacuum’s phenomenology, we investigate the influence of these different anomaly terms on the Columbia plot: the square of the ’t Hooft determinant favors a cross-over for small quark masses. Finally, we also discuss the extension of the ’t Hooft determinant to cases in which different mesonic multiplets interact with each other. Novel chiral anomalous interaction terms involving excited (pseudo)scalar states, pseudovector, and pseudotensor mesons are expressed via a mathematical extension of the determinant, denoted as a polydeterminant.

Role of the chiral anomaly in polarized deeply inelastic scattering. III. Wess-Zumino-Witten contributions and chiral Ward identities for finite quark mass

We extend our prior results on the worldline computation of the axial vector-vector-vector (AVV) triangle anomaly in polarized deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) to the finite mass case by computing in addition the pseudoscalar-vector-vector (PVV) triangle graph. For the well-studied QED case, we show explicitly how the off-forward AVV pole exactly cancels an identical PVV pole. We then demonstrate the dramatic difference in QCD due to the chiral condensate, which qualitatively modifies anomalous Ward identities. As in the massless case, the anomaly pole in QCD is canceled by the dynamics of a primordial isosinglet pseudoscalar η ¯ -meson, whose Wess-Zumino-Witten coupling to the topological charge density shifts the pole to the physical η ′ mass, with the finite quark mass contribution differing by O ( 10 % ) from the Witten-Veneziano formula. We obtain a compact analytic expression for the finite mass corrections to Shore and Veneziano’s result that the proton’s net quark helicity Δ Σ ∝ χ QCD ′ | m = 0 ( 0 ) , the forward slope of the topological susceptibility in the chiral limit, and show they are of the order of a few percentages. Our prior prediction that the polarized DIS structure function g 1 is quenched by sphaleronlike topological transitions at small x is unaffected by quark mass effects. Our results illustrate how worldline computations of anomalous processes, in synergy with lattice computations and nonet chiral perturbation theory, can uncover novel nonperturbative features of QCD at the Electron-Ion Collider. Quantum Anomalies in Condensed Matter

Quantum materials provide a fertile ground in which to test and realize unusual phenomena such as quantum anomalies predicted by quantum field theory. There are three important symmetries that are broken when classical field theory is moved into the quantum regime, the scale anomaly, the axial (chiral) anomaly, and the parity anomaly. Several potential device applications may be realized by the discovery of quantum anomalies in condensed matter, enabled by the new physics they embody, including ultra‐sensitive dark matter detectors, far infrared optical modulators, micro‐bolometric detectors, low‐dissipation ballistic transporters, terahertz‐based qubits, terahertz polarization state controls, passive magnetic field sensors, stable topological superconductors that host Majorana fermions, and qubits topologically protected against decoherence. In this perspective article, the definition of these quantum anomalies is laid out, how little is known in the context of condensed matter, and how quantum anomalies are predicted to manifest as anomalous electronic, thermal, and magnetic behavior in experiments on topological quantum materials, including Weyl and Dirac semimetals. Furthermore, the importance that mechanical strain and defects will play in modifying signatures of quantum anomalies is discussed.

Emergence of the polydeterminant in QCD

A generalization of the determinant appears in particle physics in effective Lagrangian interaction terms that model the chiral anomaly in quantum chromodynamics (Giacosa et al. in Phys Rev D 97(9):091901, 2018, Phys Rev D 109(7):L071502, 2024), in particular in connection to mesons. This polydeterminant function, known in the mathematical literature as a mixed discriminant, associates N distinct N x N complex matrices into a complex number and reduces to the usual determinant when all matrices are taken as equal. Here, we explore the main properties of the polydeterminant applied to (quantum) fields by using a formalism and a language close to high-energy physics approaches. We discuss its use as a tool to write down novel chiral anomalous Lagrangian terms and present an explicit illustrative model for mesons. Finally, the extension of the polydeterminant as a function of tensors is shown.

Ordinary and exotic mesons in the extended Linear Sigma Model

The extended Linear Sigma Model (eLSM) is a hadronic model based on the global symmetries of QCD and the corresponding explicit, anomalous, and spontaneous breaking patterns. In its basic three-flavor form, its mesonic part contains the dilaton/glueball as well as the nonets of pseudoscalar, scalar, vector, and axial–vector mesons, thus chiral symmetry is linearly realized. In the chiral limit and neglecting the chiral anomaly, only one term – within the dilaton potential – breaks dilatation invariance, and all terms are chirally symmetric. Spontaneous symmetry breaking is implemented by a generalization of the Mexican-hat potential, with explicit symmetry breaking responsible for its tilting. The overall mesonic phenomenology up to ~2 GeV is in agreement with the PDG compilation of masses and partial and total decay widths. The eLSM was enlarged in a straightforward way to include other conventional quark–antiquark nonets (pseudovector and orbitally excited vector mesons, tensor and axial-tensor mesons, radially excited (pseudo)scalar mesons, etc.), as well as two nonets of hybrid mesons, the lightest one with exotic quantum numbers J $\mathscr{PC}$ = 1 -+ not allowed for $\bar{q}q$ objects, such as the resonance π 1 (1600) and the recently discovered η 1 (1855) . In doing so, different types of chiral multiplets are introduced: heterochiral and homochiral multiplets, which differ in the way they transform under chiral transformations. Moreover, besides the scalar glueball that is present from the beginning as dilaton, other glueballs, the tensor, the pseudoscalar and the vector glueballs were coupled to the eLSM: the scalar resonance ƒ 0 (1710) turns out to be mostly gluonic, the tensor glueball couples strongly to vector mesons, and the pseudoscalar glueball couples sizably to $ππη'$ and can be assigned to X (2370) or X (2600). In all cases above, masses and decays can be analyzed allowing for a better understanding of both conventional and non-conventional mesons: whenever data are available, a comparison is performed and, when this is not the case, predictions of decay widths and decay ratios are outlined. The eLSM contains chiral partners on an equal footing and is therefore well suited for studies of chiral symmetry restoration at nonzero temperature and densities: this is done by coupling it to the Polyakov loop. Finally, the QCD phase diagram and the location of the critical endpoint were investigated within this framework.

Causal and stable first-order chiral hydrodynamics

We derive the set of inequalities that is necessary and sufficient for nonlinear causality and linear stability of first-order relativistic hydrodynamics with either a U ( 1 ) V conserved current or a U ( 1 ) A current with a chiral anomaly or both. Our results apply to generic hydrodynamic frames in which no relations among the transport parameters are imposed. Furthermore, our analysis yields, to the best of our knowledge, the first theory of viscous chiral hydrodynamics proven to be causal and stable. We find that causality demands the absence of vorticity-induced heat flux, forcing a departure from the thermodynamic frame in the chiral case. The inequalities for causality and stability define a hypervolume in the space of transport parameters, wherein each point corresponds to a consistent formulation. Notably, causality is determined by just three combinations of transport parameters. We present our results in a form amenable to numerical hydrodynamic simulations. Symmetry-engineered chiral magnetotransport in the correlated oxide SrNbO 3

Chiral transport in topological materials, arising from the interplay between topology and chirality, holds significant potential for energy-efficient spintronics and quantum information technologies through dissipationless, coherent charge flow. However, the emergence of chiral transport by tuning the electronic states of novel chiral materials is largely unexplored. Here, we report chiral transport driven by correlated Dirac fermions in SrNbO 3 epitaxial thin films, where strain-induced nonsymmorphic symmetry of oxygen octahedra tunes the material from metallic to Dirac states. Such symmetry-driven Dirac fermions feature a remarkable enhancement of electron mobility and magnetoresistance. Signatures of chiral transport induced by the chiral anomaly, including negative longitudinal magnetoresistance and twofold planar Hall oscillation, are observed in the Dirac semimetallic state, whereas they are absent in the metallic state of SrNbO 3 thin films. This work highlights a crucial role of symmetry engineering in generating chiral charge transport in oxide Dirac semimetals, opening an avenue to novel oxide-based topological and quantum devices.

Uncertainty Estimation and Anomaly Detection in Chiral Effective Field Theory Studies of Key Nuclear Electroweak Processes

Chiral effective field theory (χEFT) is a powerful tool for studying electroweak processes in nuclei. I discuss χEFT calculations of three key nuclear electroweak processes: primordial deuterium production, proton-proton fusion, and magnetic dipole excitations of 48 Ca. Further, this article showcases χEFT’s ability to quantify theory uncertainties at the appropriate level of rigor for addressing the different precision demands of these three processes.

Conjectures about the Chiral Phase Transition in QCD from Anomalous Multi-Instanton Interactions

To date numerical simulations of lattice QCD have not found a chiral phase transition of first order that is expected to occur for sufficiently light pions. We show how the restoration of an exact global chiral symmetry can strongly decrease the breaking of the approximate, anomalous U A ( 1 ) symmetry. This is testable on the lattice through simulations for one through four flavors. In QCD a small breaking of the U A ( 1 ) symmetry in the chirally symmetric phase generates novel experimental signals. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Anomalous U ( 1 ) A couplings and the Columbia plot

When the quark masses are lighter than those in QCD, the standard lore is that a chiral transition of first order must emerge for three light flavors. Recently, however, numerical simulations on the lattice suggest that the chiral transition is of second order in the chiral limit. Using an extended linear sigma model in the mean field approximation, we study the relation between terms which break the anomalous, U ( 1 ) A symmetry and the order of the chiral phase transition, especially how a chiral transition of second order can arise for three massless flavors. We note that in an (unphysical) region of the “Columbia” phase diagram, when the strange quark mass is light and negative, corresponding to topological angle θ = π , the C P symmetry is spontaneously broken. Ginsparg-Wilson Hamiltonians with Improved Chiral Symmetry

We construct a family of Ginsparg-Wilson Hamiltonians with improved chiral properties, starting from a construction of Creutz-Horvath-Neuberger that provides a doubler-free Hamiltonian lattice regularization for Dirac fermions in even spacetime dimensions. We use a higher-order generalization of the Ginsparg-Wilson relation due to Fujikawa, which yields an order-$k$ Hamiltonian overlap operator for each integer $k \geq 0$, with an exactly conserved but nonquantized chiral charge that becomes quantized as $k \to \infty$. Our construction provides physical insight into how Fujikawa's higher-order Ginsparg-Wilson relation improves chiral symmetry while reproducing the anomaly, highlighting the trade-offs inherent in any Hamiltonian lattice realization of an anomalous chiral symmetry. This class of Hamiltonian lattice regularizations, with their tunable chiral symmetry properties, offers potential advantages for quantum and tensor-network simulations.

High-quality axion from exact SUSY chiral dynamics

We use supersymmetric chiral dynamics perturbed by anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking to obtain a high-quality, composite axion that solves the strong problem. The strong dynamics arises from a supersymmetric SU(10) chiral gauge theory with massless matter chiral superfields. This leads to a stable, nonsupersymmetric vacuum, calculated exactly, where a spontaneously broken global symmetry, identified with the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry, gives rise to a composite QCD axion. The chiral gauge theory also admits a discrete (or ) gauge symmetry that forbids PQ-violating operators up to dimension eight. An extension to an chiral gauge theory incorporates grand unification where the unification scale is identified with the PQ-breaking scale and PQ-violating operators are forbidden up to dimension 20. The supersymmetry breaking scale, near 100 TeV, ameliorates the Higgs hierarchy problem, while colored Nambu–Goldstone bosons may be detected at future colliders via decays to gluons or form heavy isotopes.
