Spectrum of Dirac eigenvalues across QCD chiral transition

Here, we show that the universal scaling properties of the chiral phase transition in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at the macroscale are encoded in the microscopic energy levels of the quarks in the background of gluon fields, defined as eigenvalues of the Dirac operator. We introduce a novel relation between the cumulants of the chiral condensate, and the correlations among the energy levels of quarks, i.e., the eigenspectra of the massless QCD Dirac operator. This relation elucidates how the fluctuations of the chiral condensate arise from the correlations within the infrared part of the energy spectra of quarks, and naturally leads to a generalization of the Banks-Casher relation for the cumulants of the chiral condensate. Then, through (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD calculations using HISQ action with varying light quark masses around the chiral phase transition temperature, we demonstrate that the correlations among the infrared part of the Dirac eigenvalue spectra exhibit same universal scaling behaviors as expected of the cumulants of the chiral condensate. We find that these universal scaling behaviors extend up to the physical values of the up and down quark masses.

Microscopic origin of criticality at macroscale in QCD chiral phase transition

We reveal that the criticality of the chiral phase transition in QCD at the macroscale arises from the microscopic energy levels of its fundamental constituents, the quarks. We establish a novel relation between cumulants of the chiral order parameter (i.e., chiral condensate) and correlations among the energy levels of quarks (i.e., eigenspectra of the massless Dirac operator), which naturally leads to a generalization of the Banks-Casher relation. Based on this novel relation and through (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD calculations using the HISQ action with varying light quark masses in the vicinity of the chiral phase transition, we demonstrate that the correlations among the infrared part of the Dirac eigenspectra exhibit same universal scaling behaviors as expected of the cumulants of the chiral condensate. We find that these universal scaling behaviors extend up to the physical values of the up and down quark masses.

The phi-meson and Chiral-mass-meson production in heavy-ion collisions as potential probes of quark-gluon-plasma and Chiral symmetry transitions

Possibilities of observing abundances of phi mesons and narrow hadronic pairs, as results of QGP and Chiral transitions, are considered for nucleus-nucleus interactions. Kinematical requirements in forming close pairs are satisfied in K+K decays of S(975) and delta (980) mesons with small phi, and phi (91020) mesons with large PT, and in pi-pi decays of familiar resonance mesons only in a partially restored chiral symmetry. Gluon-gluon dominance in QGP can enhance phi meson production. High hadronization rates of primordial resonance mesons which form narrow hadronic pairs are not implausible. Past cosmic ray evidences of anomalous phi production and narrow pair abundances are considered.

Curvature of the chiral phase transition line from the magnetic equation of state of ( 2 + 1 )-flavor QCD

We analyze the dependence of the chiral phase transition temperature on baryon number and strangeness chemical potentials by calculating the leading order curvature coefficients in the light and strange quark flavor basis as well as in the conserved charge ( B , S ) basis. Making use of scaling properties of the magnetic equation of state (MEoS) and including diagonal as well as off-diagonal contributions in the expansion of the energylike scaling variable that enters the parametrization of the MEoS, allows to explore the variation of T c ( μ B , μ S ) = T c ( 1 − ( κ 2 B μ ^ B 2 + κ 2 S μ ^ S 2 + 2 κ 11 B S μ ^ B μ ^ S ) ) along different lines in the ( μ B , μ S ) plane. On lattices with fixed cutoff in units of temperature, a T = 1 / 8 , we find κ 2 B = 0.015 ( 1 ) , κ 2 S = 0.0124 ( 5 ) and κ 11 B S = − 0.0050 ( 7 ) . We show that the chemical potential dependence along the line of vanishing strangeness chemical potential is about 10% larger than along the strangeness neutral line. The latter differs only by about 3% from the curvature on a line of vanishing strange quark chemical potential, μ s = 0 . We also show that close to the chiral limit the strange quark mass contributes like an energylike variable in scaling relations for pseudocritical temperatures. The chiral phase transition temperature decreases with decreasing strange quark mass, T c ( m s ) = T c ( m s phy ) ( 1 − 0.097 ( 2 ) ( m s − m s phys ) / m s phy + O ( ( Δ m s ) 2 ) . Anomalous U ( 1 ) A couplings and the Columbia plot

When the quark masses are lighter than those in QCD, the standard lore is that a chiral transition of first order must emerge for three light flavors. Recently, however, numerical simulations on the lattice suggest that the chiral transition is of second order in the chiral limit. Using an extended linear sigma model in the mean field approximation, we study the relation between terms which break the anomalous, U ( 1 ) A symmetry and the order of the chiral phase transition, especially how a chiral transition of second order can arise for three massless flavors. We note that in an (unphysical) region of the “Columbia” phase diagram, when the strange quark mass is light and negative, corresponding to topological angle θ = π , the C P symmetry is spontaneously broken. Conjectures about the Chiral Phase Transition in QCD from Anomalous Multi-Instanton Interactions

To date numerical simulations of lattice QCD have not found a chiral phase transition of first order that is expected to occur for sufficiently light pions. We show how the restoration of an exact global chiral symmetry can strongly decrease the breaking of the approximate, anomalous U A ( 1 ) symmetry. This is testable on the lattice through simulations for one through four flavors. In QCD a small breaking of the U A ( 1 ) symmetry in the chirally symmetric phase generates novel experimental signals. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Quenching through the QCD chiral phase transition

We present a detailed numerical and analytical study of the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of Model G, the dynamical universality class relevant to the chiral phase transition. We perform numerical 3D stochastic (Langevin) simulations of the 𝑂⁡(4) critical point for large lattices in the chiral limit. We quench the system from the high-temperature unbroken phase to the broken phase and study the nonequilibrium dynamics of pion fields. Strikingly, the nonequilibrium evolution of the two-point functions exhibits a regime of growth, a parametrically large enhancement, and a subsequent slow relaxation to equilibrium. We analyze our numerical results using dynamic critical scaling and mean-field theory. The growth of the two-point functions is determined by the nonlinear dynamics of an ideal non-Abelian superfluid, which is a limit of Model G that reflects the broken chiral symmetry. We also relate the nonequilibrium two-point functions to a long-lived parametric enhancement of soft pion yields relative to thermal equilibrium following a quench.

Supercooled Goldstone Bosons at the QCD Chiral Phase Transition

We discuss a universal nonequilibrium enhancement of long-wavelength Goldstone bosons induced by quenches to the broken phase in Model G—the dynamical universality class of an 𝑂⁡(4) antiferromagnet and the chiral phase transition in QCD. Scaling arguments for the coarsening dynamics describing the formation of the chiral condensate predict a parametric enhancement in the infrared spectra of Goldstone bosons, a prediction confirmed by stochastic simulations of the transition. The details of the enhancement are determined by the nonlinear dynamics of a superfluid effective theory, which is a limit of Model G reflecting the broken 𝑂⁡(4) symmetry. Our results translate to a parametric enhancement of low-momentum pions in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC, which are underpredicted in current hydrodynamic models without critical dynamics.

A Visual Understanding of Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy

Mapping chemical and structural properties to electronic and magnetic responses is critical to many applications such as quantum information science, where the precise storage and transmission of unique information is paramount. Specifically, constructing molecules and materials that provide strong polarized responses at tunable frequencies and with large anisotropies is key to optical processing of quantum information. Chiral molecules provide chiroptical response to circularly polarized light, making them attractive for quantum information science and other applications related to sensing, polarized photodetectors, and spintronics. Predicting a molecular design, a priori, with large anisotropies to circularly polarized light is challenging due to the complex interplay between electric and magnetic components of the optical response. In this work, we explore a visual representation of the electronic chiroptical response by decomposing the rotary strength into its constituent components. Here, we make use of the intuitive electronic oscillator framework to develop classical intuition regarding the rotary strength and its constituents. We explore three model chemical systems that exhibit local and global chirality. Our analysis reveals that local chirality necessarily exhibits competition between the local chiral center and chirality induced in other fragments of the molecule, resulting in both unexpected nonmonotonic trends and sign flips in chemically adjacent geometries. Furthermore, we can visually distinguish between local and global chirality via examination of the transition chiral tensor. Interestingly, we make strong connections to ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin systems in that chiroptically inactive transitions exhibit antiferromagnetic-like alternating orbital patterns while active transitions show domain formation in an ferromagnetic-like alignment that produces a net chiroptical response.

On the interplay between magnetic field and anisotropy in holographic QCD

We investigate the combined effects of anisotropy and a magnetic field in strongly interacting gauge theories by the gauge/gravity correspondence. Our main motivation is the quark-gluon plasma produced in off-central heavy-ion collisions which exhibits large anisotropy in pressure gradients as well as large external magnetic fields. We explore two different configurations, with the anisotropy either parallel or perpendicular to the magnetic field, focusing on the competition and interplay between the two. A detailed study of the RG flow in the ground state reveals a rich structure where depending on which of the two, anisotropy or magnetic field, is stronger, intermediate geometries with approximate AdS 4 × $\mathbb{R}$ and AdS 3 × $\mathbb{R}$ 2 factors arise. This competition is also manifest in the phase structure at finite temperature, specifically in the dependence of the chiral transition temperature on anisotropy and magnetic field, from which we infer the presence of inverse magnetic and anisotropic catalyses of the chiral condensate. Finally, we consider other salient observables in the theory, including the quark-antiquark potential, shear viscosity, entanglement entropy and the butterfly velocity. We demonstrate that they serve as good probes of the theory, in particular, distinguishing between the effects of the magnetic field and anisotropy in the ground and plasma states. We also find that the butterfly velocity, which codifies how fast information propagates in the plasma, exhibits a rich structure as a function of temperature, anisotropy and magnetic field, exceeding the conformal value in certain regimes.

Higher order cumulants of net baryon-number distributions at non-zero μ

Using recent results on higher order cumulants of conserved charge fluctuations from lattice QCD, we construct mean, variance, skewness, kurtosis, hyper-skewness and hyper-kurtosis of net-baryon number distributions for small baryon chemical potentials μ B . For the strangeness neutral case ( μ S = 0) at fixed ratio of electric charge to baryon number density ( n Q n B = 0.4 ), which is appropriate for a comparison with heavy ion collisions, we present results for κ B σ 2 B , S B σ 3 B / M B , κ H B σ 4 B and S H B σ 5 B / M B on the crossover line for the chiral transition, T pc ( μ B ). Furthermore, continuum extrapolations for this pseudo-critical transition line have recently been reported by HotQCD up to baryon chemical potentials μ B ≃ 300 MeV [A. Bazavov, et al., Chiral crossover in QCD at zero and non-zero chemical potentials, Phys. Lett. B 795 (2019) 15–21. arXiv:1812.08235 .]. These cumulant ratios are of direct relevance for comparisons with corresponding ratios measured by STAR in the BES-I and II runs at beam energies s NN ≥ 20 GeV . In particular, we point out that recent high statistics results on skewness and kurtosis of net-baryon number distributions obtained by STAR at s NN = 54.4 GeV put strong constraints on freeze-out parameters and are consistent with predictions from thermal QCD.

Nonadiabatic Phase Transition with Broken Chiral Symmetry

We explore nonadiabatic quantum phase transitions in an Ising spin chain with a linearly time-dependent transverse field and two different spins per unit cell. Such a spin system passes through critical points with gapless excitations, which support nonadiabatic transitions. Nevertheless, we find that the excitations on one of the chain sublattices are suppressed in the nearly adiabatic regime exponentially. Furthermore, we reveal a coherent mechanism to induce exponentially large density separation for different quasiparticles.

Charm degrees of freedom in hot matter from lattice QCD

We study the nature of charm degrees of freedom in hot strong interaction matter by performing lattice QCD calculations of the second and fourth-order cumulants of charm fluctuations, and their correlations with net baryon number, electric charge and strangeness fluctuations. We show that below the chiral crossover temperature thermodynamics of charm can be very well understood in terms of charmed hadrons. Above the chiral transition charm quarks show up as new degrees of freedom contributing to the partial charm pressure. However, up to temperatures as high as 175 MeV charmed hadron-like excitations provide a significant contribution to the partial charm pressure.

Incommensurate Transverse Peierls Transition and Signature of Chiral Charge Density Wave in EuAl 4

In one-dimensional quantum materials, electrons and lattices can undergo a Peierls transition, a translational symmetry-breaking instability traditionally understood through electron coupling to longitudinal acoustic phonons. Recently, this paradigm has been revised in topological semimetals, where transverse acoustic phonons couple to p-orbital electrons, giving rise to a transverse Peierls transition. Importantly, transverse Peierls transition-induced distortions can further break mirror or inversion symmetries, producing nematic or chiral charge density waves. Here, we report the experimental identification of an incommensurate transverse Peierls transition in EuAl 4 . Using meV-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering, we observe complete softening of a transverse acoustic phonon upon cooling, while the longitudinal acoustic mode remains unaffected. First-principles calculations reveal that the transverse Peierls transition wavevector coincides with a charge susceptibility peak connecting nested Dirac bands. Second harmonic generation confirms mirror symmetry breaking, supporting a chiral charge density wave stabilized by the transverse Peierls transition.

Universality driven analytic structure of QCD crossover: radius of convergence and QCD critical point

Recent lattice QCD calculations show strong indications that the crossover of QCD at zero baryon chemical potential (µB) is a remnant of the second order chiral phase transition. The non-universal parameters needed to map temperature T and µ B to the universal properties of the second order chiral phase transition were determined by lattice QCD calculations. Motivated by these advances, first, we discuss the analytic structure of the partition function - the so-called Yang-Lee edge singularity - in the QCD crossover regime, solely based on universal properties. Then, utilizing the lattice calculated non-universal parameters, we map this singularity to the real T and complex µ B plane, in order to find the radius of convergence for a Taylor series expansion of QCD partition function around µ B = 0 in the QCD crossover regime. Our most important findings are: (i) An universality-based estimate of the radius of convergence around µ B = 0; (ii) Universality and lattice QCD based constraints on the location of the QCD critical point in the T - µ B plane.

Magnetic field induced partially polarized chiral spin liquid in a transition metal dichalcogenide moiré system

As one of the most intriguing states of matter, the chiral spin liquid (CSL) has attracted much scientific interest while its existence and mechanism in crystalline strongly correlated systems remain hotly debated. On the other hand, strong correlation driven emergent phenomena can be realized in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers with a tremendously tunable large length scale providing a new platform for the emergence of CSLs. Here, we focus on a strongly correlated model relevant to heterobilayer WSe 2 /MoSe 2 and investigate the Mott insulating phase at half filling under an out-of-plane magnetic field. Considering both its orbital and spin Zeeman effects we identify three conventionally ordered phases including a 120° Néel phase, a stripe phase, and an up-up-down phase. For intermediate fields an emergent quantum spin liquid phase is identified with partial spin polarization. We further characterize its topological nature as the v = 1/2 Laughlin CSL through the topological entanglement spectrum and quantized spin pumping under spin flux insertion. In addition, we map out the quantum phase diagram for different twisted angles in an experimentally accessible parameter regime.
