Radiolytic evaluation of select sulfur chlorides (S 2 Cl 2 and SOCl 2 ) for advanced low temperature chlorination of zirconium-based used nuclear fuel cladding

New sulfur chloride compounds—sulfur monochloride (S 2 Cl 2 ) and thionyl chloride (SOCl 2 )—have been proposed as alternative chlorinating agents for the chemical decladding of zirconium-based used nuclear fuel cladding materials. However, the radiation stability of these compounds has not been thoroughly evaluated, despite envisioned process conditions involving intense, multi-component radiation fields. Knowledge of the radiation chemistry of these sulfur chlorides is essential for the development and optimization of alternative chlorination technologies. To this end, we present preliminary findings on the gamma radiolysis of neat S 2 Cl 2 and SOCl 2 at ambient temperature up to ~ 34 MGy. In this study, Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations were used to identify the Raman-active degradation products from S 2 Cl 2 and SOCl 2 radiolysis. Both sulfur chloride compounds exhibited significant radiation resistance, with respect to changes in the Raman signatures of the parent compounds and the ingrowth of Raman-active degradation products. For S 2 Cl 2 , molecular chlorine (Cl 2 ) was directly identified as the predominant degradation product, which was completely consumed at higher absorbed doses (> 9 MGy). Similarly, the main degradation product from SOCl 2 radiolysis was also Cl 2 , although in this system it continued to grow in with dose over the entire dose range. Further, an “S=O” containing degradation product(s) was also identified as a compliment to Cl 2 . Overall, the perceived radiation resistance of these sulfur chloride compounds makes them suitable for inclusion in a used nuclear fuel chemical decladding process, especially as radiolytically formed Cl 2 can be used to reform the parent compounds, thereby increasing the longevity of the solvents used.

Anion photoelectron spectroscopic and relativistic coupled-cluster studies of uranyl dichloride anion, UO 2 Cl 2 –

A joint relativistic coupled-cluster and experimental photoelectron (PE) spectroscopic study of the uranyl dichloride anion, UO 2 Cl 2 – , is reported. Sophisticated electronic-structure calculations predict the photodetachment of UO 2 Cl 2 – to involve a U 5f electron and to be followed by significant geometry relaxation. Therefore, the adiabatic electron affinity (EA a ) of the uranyl dichloride neutral molecule, UO 2 Cl 2 , and the vertical detachment energy (VDE) of its anion, UO 2 Cl 2 – , provide valuable information about its uranium 5f orbital energies. The EA a value was computed to be 3.15 eV. The VDE value was calculated to be 3.55 eV by augmenting the computed EA a with a shift derived from a Franck–Condon simulation using coupled-cluster potential energy surfaces. Here, the VDE, which corresponds to the highest intensity peak in the PE spectrum, was measured to be 3.69 ± 0.20 eV, in good agreement with the computed value. The origin transition in the PE spectrum, whose electron binding energy corresponds to the EA a , was assigned to the feature at 3.2 ± 0.20 eV, consistent with the computed EA a .

Dehydration of UO 2 Cl 2 ·3H 2 O and Nd(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O with a Soft Donor Ligand and Comparison of Their Interactions through X-ray Diffraction and Theoretical Investigation [plus Supplemental Information]

Herein we investigated whether the relatively Lewis basic imidazole-2-thiones could be used to substitute water ligands bound to f-element cations and generate f-element soft donor complexes. Reactions of 1,3-diethylimidazole-2-thione (C 2 C 2 ImT) with Nd(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O and UO 2 Cl 2 ·3H 2 O led to the isolation of the anhydrous thione complexes Nd(NO 3 ) 3 (C 2 C 2 ImT) 3 and UO 2 Cl 2 (C 2 C 2 ImT) 2 , characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Differences in the strength of metal–thione interactions have been examined by means of the crystal structure analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The C 2 C 2 ImT ligands were found to be affected by both coordination and noncovalent interactions, making it impossible to deconvolute the effects of one from the other. Calculated partial atomic charges indicated greater ligand-to-metal charge transfer in the [UO 2 ] 2+ complex, indicative of a stronger interaction. The reactivity of C 2 C 2 ImT demonstrates its usefulness in the preparation of f-element soft donor complexes from readily available hydrates that could be useful intermediates for promoting the coordination and studying the effects of soft donor anions.

Paramagnon dispersion and damping in doped Na x Ca 2 – x CuO 2 Cl 2

Here, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we measure the paramagnon dispersion and damping of undoped, antiferromagnetic Ca 2 CuO 2 Cl 2 as well as doped, superconducting Na x Ca 2–x CuO 2 Cl 2 . Our estimation of the spin-exchange parameter and width of the paramagnon peak at the zone boundary X=(0.5, 0) confirms that no simple relation can be drawn between these parameters and the critical temperature T c . Consistently with other cuprate compounds, we show that upon doping there is a slight softening at (0.25,0) but not at the zone boundary X. In combination with these measurements we perform calculations of the dynamical spin structure factor of the one-band Hubbard model using cluster dynamical mean-field theory. The calculations are in excellent agreement with the experiment in the undoped case, both in terms of energy position and width. While the increase in width is also captured upon doping, the dynamical spin structure factor shows a sizable softening at X, which provides insightful information on the length-scale of the spin fluctuations in doped cuprates.

Implications of second harmonic generation for hidden order in Sr 2 CuO 2 Cl 2

Sr 2 CuO 2 Cl 2 (SCOC) is a model undoped cuprate with I4/mmm crystallographic symmetry, and a simple magnetic space group CAmca with associated magnetic point group mmm1'. However, recent second harmonic spectroscopy in the antiferromagnetic phase has challenged this picture, suggesting instead a magnetic point group 4/mm'm' that coexists with the antiferromagnetism and breaks the two orthogonal mirror planes containing the tetragonal c axis. Here, we analyze the symmetry of SCOC in light of the second harmonic results, and discuss possible ground states that are consistent with the data.

Solvothermal Synthesis of [Cr 7 S 8 (en) 8 Cl 2 ]Cl 3 ⋅ 2H 2 O with Magnetically Frustrated [Cr 7 S 8 ] 5+ Double‐Cubes**

Abstract A novel transition metal chalcohalide [Cr 7 S 8 (en) 8 Cl 2 ]Cl 3 ⋅ 2H 2 O, with [Cr 7 S 8 ] 5+ dicubane cationic clusters, has been synthesized by a low temperature solvothermal method, using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and ethylenediamine ( en ) solvents. Ethylenediamine ligand exhibits bi‐ and monodentate coordination modes; in the latter case ethylenediamine coordinates to Cr atoms of adjacent clusters, giving rise to a 2D polymeric structure. Although magnetic susceptibility shows no magnetic ordering down to 1.8 K, a highly negative Weiss constant, θ =−224(2) K, obtained from Curie‐Weiss fit of inverse susceptibility, suggests strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between S =3/2 Cr(III) centers. Due to the complexity of the system with (2 S +1) 7 =16384 microstates from seven Cr 3+ centers, a simplified model with only two exchange constants was used for simulations. Density‐functional theory (DFT) calculations yielded the two exchange constants to be J 1 =−21.4 cm −1 and J 2 =−30.2 cm −1 , confirming competing AFM coupling between the shared Cr 3+ center and the peripheral Cr 3+ ions of the dicubane cluster. The best simulation of the experimental data was obtained with J 1 =−20.0 cm −1 and J 2 =−21.0 cm −1 , in agreement with the slightly stronger AFM exchange within the triangles of the peripheral Cr 3+ ions as compared to the AFM exchange between the central and peripheral Cr 3+ ions. This compound is proposed as a synthon towards magnetically frustrated systems assembled by linking dicubane transition metal‐chalcogenide clusters into polymeric networks.

Crystal structure of [Th 3 (Cp*) 3 (O)(OH) 3 ] 2 Cl 2 (N 3 ) 6 : a discrete molecular capsule built from multinuclear organothorium cluster cations

An unusually large and structurally complex charge-neutral polynuclear cluster, hexa-μ 2 -azido-di-μ 3 -chlorido-hexa-μ 2 -hydroxido-di-μ 3 -oxido-hexakis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)hexathorium–diethyl ether–tetrahydrofuran (1/0.56/1.44), [Th 3 (C 10 H 15 ) 6 Cl 3 (N 3 ) 6 (OH) 6 O 2 ]·0.56C 4 H 10 O·1.44C 4 H 8 O or [Th 3 (Cp*) 3 (O)(OH) 3 ] 2 Cl 2 (N 3 ) 6 ·0.56C 4 H 10 O·1.44C 4 H 8 O (Cp* = [pentamethylcyclopentadienyl]) − , has been crystallized as a mixed tetrahydrofuran/diethyl ether solvate and structurally characterized. The molecule contains a number of unusual features, the most notable being a finite yet exceptionally long cyclic metal-azido chain. These rare features are the consequence of both sterically protecting Cp* ligands and highly bridging oxide and hydroxide ligands in the same system and illustrate the interesting new possibilities that can arise from combining organometallic and solvothermal f -block element chemistry.

Flux-assisted polytypism in the [Na 2 Cl]GaQ 2 heterolayered salt-inclusion chalcogenide family

Two polytypic heterolayered salt-inclusion chalcogenides, o-[Na 2 Cl]GaQ 2 and t-[Na 2 Cl]GaQ 2 , were obtained via a NaCl/NaI flux-assisted synthesis, as part of an investigation of the Na–Ga–Q (Q = S and Se) system. The use of a different flux, NaBr/NaI, in the Na–Ga–Se system did not lead to the formation of salt-inclusion phases, but instead the novel Na 2 GaSe 3 and Na 4 Ga 2 Se 5 phases were obtained. Thermal and electronic properties of [Na 2 Cl]GaS 2 materials were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, post-quenching ex situ powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), high-temperature PXRD, and enthalpy and electronic structure calculations via density functional theory. Those studies determined the absence of any temperature-induced phase transition between the o-[Na 2 Cl]GaS 2 and t-[Na 2 Cl]GaS 2 polytypic compounds. Moreover, herein we probed the suitability of the heterolayered [Na 2 Cl]GaS 2 single crystals as a sorbent for UO 2 2+ uptake and monitored this process by energy-dispersive and infrared spectroscopies and PXRD, which revealed that the [Na 2 Cl]+ insert could be exchanged with UO 2 2+ on the surface while the UO 2 2+ intercalation decomposes the [Na 2 Cl]GaS 2 structure.

Equation of state, phase transitions, and band-gap closure in Pb Cl 2 and Sn Cl 2

The equations of state and band-gap closures for Pb Cl 2 and Sn Cl 2 were studied using both experimental and theoretical methods. Here we measured the volume of both materials to a maximum pressure of 70 GPa using synchrotron-based angle-dispersive powder x-ray diffraction. The lattice parameters for both compounds showed anomalous changes between 16–32 GPa, providing evidence of a phase transition from the cotunnite structure to the related Co 2 Si structure, in contrast to the postcotunnite structure as previously suggested. First-principles calculations confirm this finding and predict a second phase transition to a Co 2 Si-like structure between 75– 110 GPa in Pb Cl 2 and 60–75 GPa in Sn Cl 2 . Band gaps were measured under compression to ~70 GPa for Pb Cl 2 and ~66 GPa for Sn Cl 2 and calculated up to 200 GPa for Pb CI 2 and 120 GPa for Sn Cl 2 . We find an excellent agreement between our experimental and theoretical results when using the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE06) hybrid functional, which suggests that this functional could reliably be used to calculate the band gap of similar AX 2 compounds. Experimental and calculated band-gap results show discontinuous decreases in the band gap corresponding to phase changes to higher-coordinated crystal structures, giving insight into the relationship between interatomic geometry and metallicity.

A novel symmetric pyrazine (pyz)-bridged uranyl dimer [UO 2 Cl 3 (H 2 O)(Pyz) 0.5 ] 2 2– : synthesis, structure and computational analysis

In this work, we report on the synthesis of (HPyz + ) 2 [UO 2 Cl 3 (H 2 O)(Pyz) 0.5 ] 2 ·2H 2 O which features a novel pyrazine-bridged uranyl dimer, [UO 2 Cl 3 (H 2 O)(Pyz) 0.5 ] 2 2– . A rigorous computational and experimental analysis of this compound was performed to fully explore the influence of coordination on the electronic structure and potential charge-transfer characteristics of this dimer, revealing a delocalized π-system across the bridging pyrazine and the axial components of both uranyl centers. Electrostatic surface potentials, used to rationalize the observed assembly, indicate a decreased basicity of the uranyl oxo versus [UO 2 Cl 4 ] 2– , and signify a lessened capacity for the terminal –yl oxos of the [UO 2 Cl 3 (H 2 O)(Pyz) 0.5 ] 2 2– dimer to participate in supramolecular assembly. A combined density functional theory (DFT) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis further evidenced an increase in U═O bond strengths within the dimer, which is supported by a blue shift in the characteristic Raman-active uranyl symmetric stretch (ν 1 ) with respect to the more typically observed [UO 2 Cl 4 ] 2– .

(NH 4 ) 2 [UO 2 Cl 4 ]·2H 2 O, a new uranyl tetrachloride with ammonium charge-balancing cations

A new uranyl tetrachloride salt with chemical formula, (NH 4 ) 2 [UO 2 Cl 4 ]·2H 2 O, namely, diammonium uranyl tetrachloride dihydrate, 1 , was prepared and crystallized via slow evaporation from a solution of 2 M hydrochloric acid. As confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, the title compound crystallizes with an ammonium chloride impurity that formed as a result of the breakdown of a triazine precursor. The (UO 2 Cl 4 ) 2− dianion is charge balanced by ammonium cations, while an extensive hydrogen-bond network donated from structural water molecules stabilize the overall assembly. Compound 1 adds to the extensive collection of actinyl tetrachloride salts, but it represents the first without an alkali cation for purely inorganic compounds. Diffuse reflectance and luminescence spectra show typical absorption and emission behavior, respectively, of uranyl materials.

Molten Salts-Driven Discovery of a Polar Mixed-Anion 3D Framework at the Nanoscale: Zn 4 Si 2 O 7 Cl 2 , Charge Transport and Photoelectrocatalytic Water Splitting

Mixed-anion compounds widen the chemical space of attainable materials compared to single anionic compounds, but the exploration of their structural diversity is limited by common synthetic paths. Especially, oxychlorides rely mainly on layered structures, which suffer from low stability during photo(electro)catalytic processes. Herein we report a strategy to design a new polar 3D tetrahedral framework with composition Zn 4 Si 2 O 7 Cl 2 . We use a molten salt medium to enable low temperature crystallization of nanowires of this new compound, by relying on tetrahedral building units present in the melt to build the connectivity of the oxychloride. These units are combined with silicon-based connectors from a non-oxidic Zintl phase to enable precise tuning of the oxygen content. This structure brings high chemical and thermal stability, as well as strongly anisotropic hole mobility along the polar axis. These features, associated with the ability to adjust the transport properties by doping, enable to tune water splitting properties for photoelectrocatalytic H 2 evolution and water oxidation. This work then paves the way to a new family of mixed-anion solids
