The Community Microgrid Assistance Partnership (C-MAP) provides funding, access to technical experts, and educational resources to energy providers in remote and electrically isolated areas to help them build, operate, and enhance microgrid systems.
This informational webinar, held on Nov. 11, 2024, covered the structure, technical focus, and eligibility criteria for the first Request for Proposals (RFP) released by the Community Microgrid Assistance Partnership (C-MAP). Eligible communities are invited to propose a community-based microgrid development or improvement project for funding and/or technical assistance. C-MAP is a program led by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Electricity with management and coordination by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. C-MAP will bring together many of the organizations that are working to understand, improve, and implement advanced microgrid energy systems in underserved and Indigenous communities in remote areas, facilitating a new forum for engagement and collaboration. Wraparound services from regional organizations will support the participating communities in microgrid operations as it relates to advancing their energy goals.
learnings from technical assistance provided to communities under DOE Energy Technology Innovation Partnership Projects
The Energy Technology Innovation Partnership Project (ETIPP) team worked with Aquinnah and Chilmark, two towns in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, to develop strategies for a microgrid system that would enhance energy reliability for essential community buildings during power outages.
In 2021, the Town of Nags Head, located in the Outer Banks region of North Carolina, was among the first cohort of coastal and island communities to participate in the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project (ETIPP), which offers technical assistance and cash awards to competitively selected coastal, remote, and island communities seeking to transform their energy systems and increase their energy resilience. As a barrier island separated from mainland North Carolina, Nags Head experiences impacts from extreme weather events, including power outages, especially during hurricane season. To address challenges, the Nags Head ETIPP team sought to improve the town's disaster resilience by ensuring that critical facilities can remain powered during and after extreme events. With support from experts at Sandia National Laboratories, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and the Coastal Studies Institute, the community team identified the following goals for its participation in ETIPP: 1. Identify and prioritize critical facilities that, when powered during disruptions, support the town's resilience. 2. Analyze the potential for on-site solar photovoltaic (PV) and storage systems at 2-4 prioritized critical facilities owned and/or operated by the town. 3. Analyze the potential for interconnecting solar PV and storage systems at a cluster of public and privately owned facilities into a resilient microgrid. 4. Explore finance options and utility interconnection requirements and compensation mechanisms. 5. Summarize outcomes and next steps for town leadership.
The Lahaina Energy Partnership (LEP) is an initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) to support energy planning and rebuilding efforts in Hawaii's historic town of Lahaina on Maui as the community recovers from a devastating fire on August 8, 2023, with technical assistance provided by the National Laboratory of the Rockies. NLR has partnered with Hawaii-based community organizations to engage with Lahaina the community on energy priorities and inform the technical assistance scope. This virtual workshop presentation is the second in a two-part series to provide progress updates and request community input to guide next steps. Workshop 1 on November 18 focused on hydropower resource potential, building energy modeling, and workforce development. Workshop 2 on December 11 (this presentation) will focus on microgrids, electric grid hardening, policy and regulation.

In 2023, the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) partnered with the Renewable Energy Alaska Project (REAP) to provide technical assistance to Igiugig through the US Department of Energy's Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project (ETIPP). The overall objective of this ETIPP project was to provide technical support to help the community achieve their energy goal of reducing diesel fuel for electricity by 50% by 2030 through the implementation of high priority strategies defined in their 2022 Community Energy Plan. Technical support focused on evaluating additional renewables and renewable heating scenarios, identifying heat recovery system design options for high penetration renewables, investigation power quality and line loss issues, and supporting integration of battery energy storage.
