An algebraic formula for two loop renormalization of scalar quantum field theory

We find a general formula for the two-loop renormalization counterterms of a scalar quantum field theory with interactions containing up to two derivatives, extending ’t Hooft’s one-loop result. The method can also be used for theories with higher derivative interactions, as long as the terms in the Lagrangian have at most one derivative acting on each field. We show that diagrams with factorizable topologies do not contribute to the renormalization group equations. The results in this paper will be combined with the geometric method in a subsequent paper to obtain the counterterms and renormalization group equations for the scalar sector of effective field theories (EFT) to two-loop order.

Some elements of a theory of multidimensional complex variables. I - General theory. II - Expansions of analytic functions and application to fluid flows

The paper introduces a new theory of N-dimensional complex variables and analytic functions which, for N greater than 2, is both a direct generalization and a close analog of the theory of ordinary complex variables. The algebra in the present theory is a commutative ring, not a field. Functions of a three-dimensional variable were defined and the definition of the derivative then led to analytic functions.

Commuting Line Defects At $q^N$ = 1

Here, we explain the physical origin of a curious property of algebras $\mathcal{A}_{\mathfrak{q}}$ which encode the rotation-equivariant fusion ring of half-BPS line defects in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 supersymmetric quantum field theories. These algebras are a quantization of the algebras of holomorphic functions on the three-dimensional Coulomb branch of the SQFTs, with deformation parameter log $\mathfrak{q}$. They are known to acquire a large center, canonically isomorphic to the undeformed algebra, whenever $\mathfrak{q}$ is a root of unity. We give a physical explanation of this fact. We also generalize the construction to characterize the action of this center in the $\mathcal{A}_{\mathfrak{q}}$-modules associated to three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 boundary conditions. Finally, we use dualities to relate this construction to a construction in the Kapustin–Witten twist of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 gauge theory. These considerations give simple physical explanations of certain properties of quantized skein algebras and cluster varieties, and quantum groups, when the deformation parameter is a root of unity.

Bialgebra deformations and algebras of trees

Let A denote a bialgebra over a field k and let A sub t = A((t)) denote the ring of formal power series with coefficients in A. Assume that A is also isomorphic to a free, associative algebra over k. A simple construction is given which makes A sub t a bialgebra deformation of A. In typical applications, A sub t is neither commutative nor cocommutative. In the terminology of Drinfeld, (1987), A sub t is a quantum group. This construction yields quantum groups associated with families of trees.
