The Autonomous Sciencecraft Constellation flight demonstration (ASC) will fly onboard the Air Forces's TechSat-21 constellation. Demonstration of its capabilities in a flight environment will open up tremendous new opportunities in planetary science, space physics, and earth science that would be unreadable without this technology.
The image processing and scientific analysis techniques described in this study report are not confined to radar date of Earth. The techniques have widespread applications, theoretically to any instrument at any wavelength (such as visible and infrared imagers). We illustrate how the same techniques demonstrated by ASC can be used to search for change, and identify features, on Mars and the Jovian satelites, Europa and IO.
The Danish microsatellite, sted, is equipped with an autonomous, advanced stellar compass (ASC). The ASC consists of two separate units, a Charge Coupled Device (CCD) camera head (based on a commercial Sony interline CCD detector) and a data processing unit with a powerful microcomputer (Intel 80486 type processor). The microcomputer memory contains a star catalogue which enables the microcomputer to recognize the constellations of stars in the field of vies and thus derive the attitude of the ASC camera head. The mission, and the design, operation and performance of the ASC are described. Results of the ASC prototype tests at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Table Mountain Observatory (TMO) facility are given.
The Autonomous Sciencecraft Constellation-Techsat 21 mission is a NASA New Millennium Program mission selected for flight in 2004. ASC will autonomously perform science analyses of X-band radar data, while in Earth orbit. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.
