ESS-DIVE Reporting Format for Dataset Package Metadata

ESS-DIVE’s (Environmental Systems Science Data Infrastructure for a Virtual Ecosystem) dataset metadata reporting format is intended to compile information about a dataset (e.g., title, description, funding sources) that can enable reuse of data submitted to the ESS-DIVE data repository. The files contained in this dataset include instructions (dataset_metadata_guide.md and README.md) that can be used to understand the types of metadata ESS-DIVE collects. The data dictionary (dd.csv) follows ESS-DIVE’s file-level metadata reporting format and includes brief descriptions about each element of the dataset metadata reporting format. This dataset also includes a terminology crosswalk (dataset_metadata_crosswalk.csv) that shows how ESS-DIVE’s metadata reporting format maps onto other existing metadata standards and reporting formats.Data contributors to ESS-DIVE can provide this metadata by manual entry using a web form or programmatically via ESS-DIVE’s API (Application Programming Interface). A metadata template (dataset_metadata_template.docx or dataset_metadata_template.pdf) can be used to collaboratively compile metadata before providing it to ESS-DIVE.Since being incorporated into ESS-DIVE’s data submission user interface, ESS-DIVE’s dataset metadata reporting format, has enabled features like automated metadata quality checks, and dissemination of ESS-DIVE datasets onto other data platforms including Google Dataset Search and DataCite.

The 2022 applied physics by pioneering women: a roadmap

Abstract Women have made significant contributions to applied physics research and development, and their participation is vital to continued progress. Recognizing these contributions is important for encouraging increased involvement and creating an equitable environment in which women can thrive. This Roadmap on Women in Applied Physics, written by women scientists and engineers, is intended to celebrate women’s accomplishments, highlight established and early career researchers enlarging the boundaries in their respective fields, and promote increased visibility for the impact women have on applied physics research. Perspectives cover the topics of plasma materials processing and propulsion, super-resolution microscopy, bioelectronics, spintronics, superconducting quantum interference device technology, quantum materials, 2D materials, catalysis and surface science, fuel cells, batteries, photovoltaics, neuromorphic computing and devices, nanophotonics and nanophononics, and nanomagnetism. Our intent is to inspire more women to enter these fields and encourage an atmosphere of inclusion within the scientific community.

Developing an Interactive Landscape for Mobility Resources: Preprint

As the world continues to be increasingly driven by data, the ways researchers and professionals sort and collect this data is critical. In the world of mobility data, new levels of data from public transportation systems, location services, and other means are being lost due to how little organization exists. Much of the data is proprietary, and there are few if any de jure or even de facto standards connecting data. There is also little knowledge about the gaps that exist in the data. In this project, we created an interactive landscape where mobility resources are categorized and organized in an easy to use, living document. We made this landscape with open-source code from the CNCF Cloud Native Landscape and repurposed it to the mobility data's needs. Additionally, unlike previous sources that organize mobility data, this document can be updated through GitHub by those in the field to keep its sources relevant. Following the creation of a beta version of the landscape, we conducted several interviews with industry researchers and professionals to ensure the landscape would be useful. The result is an online hub where mobility researchers and resource creators can easily access research and collaborate.

A new chapter for RCSB Protein Data Bank Molecule of the Month in 2025

The online Molecule of the Month series authored by David S. Goodsell and published by the Research Collaboratory for Structural Biology Protein Data Bank at PDB101.RCSB.org has highlighted stories about the biomolecular structures driving fundamental biology, biomedicine, bioenergy, and biotechnology since January 2000. A new chapter begins in 2025: Janet Iwasa has taken over as the series creator of stories about critically important biological macromolecules in a rapidly changing world.
