Drawing Direction Effect on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Twinning-Induced Plasticity Steel During Wire Drawing

The effect of drawing direction on microstructure and mechanical properties in twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steel during wire drawing has been investigated to improve drawability for wire rod applications. The steel wires subjected to unidirectional (UD) and reverse-directional (RD) wire drawing were analyzed. The yield and tensile strength processed by the RD were slightly higher than those by the UD, whereas the ductility and drawability have inverse features, which is totally different from the results of plain carbon steel and Al wire. Although final shear strain of wires deformed by the RD is lower than that by the UD, the RD wires had a more complex stress history and a higher <111> texture component at the surface area, which encouraged twinning rate, resulting in fast exhaustion of ductility, finally earlier fracture of wires. In contrast to the materials deformed by mainly slip mechanism, the RD process cannot improve the ductility and drawability in TWIP steel due to the stress state dependency of twinning mechanism. Also, based on the different strengthening behaviors between pearlitic and TWIP steels during UD and RD, it is induced that microstructure and applied stress state simultaneously control the mechanical properties.

Draw solutions and methods of treating an aqueous liquid

A method of treating an aqueous liquid. The method comprises providing an aqueous feed liquid comprising water and at least one solute to a first side of a membrane. A draw solution comprising water and a draw solute comprising at least one of a phosphazene compound and a triazine compound is provided to a second side of the membrane. At least a portion of the water of the aqueous feed liquid is osmosed across the membrane and into the draw solution to form a diluted draw solution comprising water and the draw solute. The water of the diluted draw solution is separated from the draw solute of the diluted draw solution to form a purified water product. Draw solutes comprising phosphazene compounds and draw solutes comprising triazine compounds are also disclosed, as are methods of forming the draw solutes.

Closed-loop pressure retarded osmosis draw solutions and their regeneration processes: A review

Pressure-Retarded Osmosis (PRO) is an osmotic process that has been used to harvest energy from salinity gradients using a semi permeable membrane. A comparison between open-loop PRO (OLPRO) and closed-loop PRO (CLPRO) was made regarding their performance and costs. In CLPRO, where the diluted draw solution is re-concentrated in the regeneration system to be reutilized in the process, has recently received an intensive focus as the most viable configuration for a standalone power plant. The choice of the PRO draw solution in CLPRO is crucial to garner a high osmotic pressure as the key for the feasibility of the process. Here, in this review, the draw solutions are critically evaluated in the literature in terms of energy output as well as the method of regeneration used to recirculate them. A set of practical criteria has been suggested to appraise the adequacy of the solution for CLPRO application. It was concluded that NH 3 – CO 2 theoretically can produce 170 W/m 2 of power density. Inorganic draw solutes such as NaCl can generate high power density up to 87 W/m 2 . Organic draw solutes with their remarkably low reverse salt flux (RSF) have promising potential for future application in PRO. Similarly, the regeneration systems of the diluted draw solutions have also been reviewed and discussed. How the energy consumption of the regeneration process affects the feasibility of CLPRO is explained. For the specific case of osmotic heat engines (OHEs), when the energy of the regeneration process is supplied by heat waste, the range of applicability of the heat waste in CLPRO in terms of efficiency is defined and compared to Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). The results showed that CLPRO has better efficiency than ORC for temperatures T < 80 °C, which makes it a promising process or low-grade heat energy recovery. In addition, a PRO-RO hybrid system coupled with solar power can reduce the net specific energy consumption (SEC) to 0.39 kWh/m 3 . The conditions that regeneration processes should operate under to make PRO viable are discussed in the last section. Overall, the study indicates the key factors for optimizing the performance of CLPRO process.

Planar Anisotropy, Tension–Compression Asymmetry, and Deep Drawing Behavior of Commercially Pure Titanium at Room Temperature

The planar anisotropy (PA) and tension–compression asymmetry (TCA) of the CP-Ti were investigated via uniaxial tension and compression tests at room temperature. The formability and the earing behavior of the CP-Ti sheet were studied via deep drawing experiment. The deep drawing simulations using the uniaxial tensile and the compressive curves as the hardening rules were compared with each other and with the experimental results. The CP-Ti sheet showed PA and TCA in yielding and strain hardening. The PA was characterized by the plastic strain ratio r{sub 0}, r{sub 45}, and r{sub 90} of 1.47, 2.06, and 2.05. The TCA showed PA, which showed tension–compression yield strength ratios of 1.12, 1.08, and 1.04 in 0°, 45°, and 90° in the rolling direction, and tensile and compressive hardening exponent ratios of 0.86, 0.8, and 0.62. The orientation distribution functions (ODFs) analysis demonstrated that the tensile and the compressive deformation textures were different and showed PA. The simulative results, including the simulated forming force and the earing profiles using the uniaxial tensile and compressive curves as the hardening rules, were not in agreement with each other. The results were not in good agreement with the experimental results, implying that the TCA had an important effect on the formability of the sheet. The TCA tended to reduce the thickness of the deep drawing parts, increase the earing ratio, and affect the drawing force.

Study on the Deformation Homogeneity and Electrical Conductivity in Co-Cr-Ni-Mo Wires Drawn with Different Drawing Practices

This study investigates the influence of cold wire drawing practices namely full die drawing (FDD) and half die drawing (HDD) on the deformation homogeneity in Co-35Ni-20Cr-10Mo alloy (MP35N) wires which are used for manufacturing implantable medical products. The inhomogeneous factor was used to assess the level of inhomogeneity in the wires, and electrical conductivity was measured on the wires, after drawn to different cold work (CW) reductions and with different drawing practices. Electron beam scattered diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope characterization were performed on the wire samples to correlate the mechanical and electrical properties to their texture and grain size. The results of this study conclude that the wires drawn with the FDD practice exhibited homogenous deformation, uniform microstructural and hardness gradient across the wire when compared to HDD wires. The electrical conductivity of the HDD-drawn wires was higher than the FDD wires and the level of inhomogeneity and the variation of conductivity decreased with the increase in CW.

Characterization of microtexture of 316L stainless steel fiber after multi-pass drawing by electron backscatter diffraction

Highlights: • Three crystalline phases, γ, α′, and σ, in 316L stainless steel fibers are observed by XRD. • Strain-induced martensite and two types of twin boundaries are formed in drawn fibers. • The twin boundary generation is nucleate at high angle grain boundaries and then bulge into the {112}<111> grain. • A route of the formation mechanism of deformation twins was analyzed by EBSD. - Abstract: The microstructure and microtexture of 316L stainless steel fibers (SSFs) after multi-pass cold drawing with intermediate heat treatment were investigated in this study. The crystalline phases of SSFs were identified and quantified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Grain orientation and boundary characterization in the mantle and core regions of drawing direction (DD) were analyzed through electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The coincident site lattice approach provides beneficial information for defining twin boundary and analyzing the orientation relationship between neighboring grains on the Σ3 segment. Three crystalline phases, γ, α, and σ, could be seen in XRD profiles. The formation mechanism of deformation twins was found, and two types of twin boundaries were observed in the drawn fibers by EBSD. The twin boundary generated between a {112}<111> grain and a <100>//DD grain is believed to nucleate at a high-angle grain boundary and then bulge into the copper grain.

Self-Organization of Multiscale Structural Groups in a Low-Carbon Wire Subjected to Severe Drawing

The peculiarities of the mechanical parameters and atomic structure of wires made of 08G2S steel subjected to severe drawing with a combination of shear and classical circular drawing of different diameters. The split form of interference maximums (211) in X-ray diagrams of samples is evidence for delamination in families of the mentioned planes into contracted and extended groups, which is accompanied by the partial order–disorder phase transition with formation of the amorphized fraction from fragments of nanosized atomic groups of these planes (clusters). The dependence on steel deformation revealed the nature of the change in the symmetry of the distribution of structural groups relative to the angular position of the diffraction maximum from the planes (211). It is established that with increased deformation (ε > 30%) the intensities of coherent and incoherent X-ray CrK{sub α}-emissions vary quantitatively, which proves the development of self-organizing processes contributing to the increase in the volume fraction of the order relative to the disorder in 08G2S steel, even subject to severe mechanical loading.

Calculating Average Hot Water Mixes of Residential Plumbing Fittings Using the ANSI 301-2019 Hot Water Draw Model and National Residential Data to Estimate Hot Water Use in Showerheads and Lavatory Faucets

Available studies of hot water use percentages may not necessarily be generalized to a national level given regional differences, varying methodological approaches, and limited sample sizes. While some publicly available usage data, reports, and surveys estimate actual household usage, a lack of water use data specific to end uses make more precise savings calculations difficult. Additionally, most hot water draw models tend to focus on overall household use and may not readily estimate lavatory fixture use. However, reviewing more recent studies and standards enables the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense program to update its estimates for hot water use and consumers’ corresponding energy and monetary savings to better reflect realworld conditions. This report specifically focuses on improving hot water use and savings estimates of lavatory faucets and showerheads. To estimate the hot water use of lavatory faucets and showerheads, we employed the 2015 Residential Energy Consumption Surveys (RECS) microdata alongside the ANSI 301-2019 Hot Water Draw Model. These estimates account for regional differences in hot water use, including regional cold water inlet temperatures. As a result, the refinements presented in this report are more robust, more recent, and better describe the geographic variation than previous inputs used by the WaterSense program. In addition, the approach described in this paper can be updated over time or tailored to regionally specific needs given available inputs. We conclude that hot water percentages for showers and faucets calculated using publicly available national data are close to the percentages found by regional studies and are consistent with household-level models of water use.

DeepPatent2: A Large-Scale Benchmarking Corpus for Technical Drawing Understanding

Abstract Recent advances in computer vision (CV) and natural language processing have been driven by exploiting big data on practical applications. However, these research fields are still limited by the sheer volume, versatility, and diversity of the available datasets. CV tasks, such as image captioning, which has primarily been carried out on natural images, still struggle to produce accurate and meaningful captions on sketched images often included in scientific and technical documents. The advancement of other tasks such as 3D reconstruction from 2D images requires larger datasets with multiple viewpoints. We introduce DeepPatent2, a large-scale dataset, providing more than 2.7 million technical drawings with 132,890 object names and 22,394 viewpoints extracted from 14 years of US design patent documents. We demonstrate the usefulness of DeepPatent2 with conceptual captioning. We further provide the potential usefulness of our dataset to facilitate other research areas such as 3D image reconstruction and image retrieval.

An Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Method for Dementia Detection Using Images from the Clock Drawing Test

Background: Widespread dementia detection could increase clinical trial candidates and enable appropriate interventions. Since the Clock Drawing Test (CDT) can be potentially used for diagnosing dementia-related disorders, it can be leveraged to develop a computer-aided screening tool. Objective: To evaluate if a machine learning model that uses images from the CDT can predict mild cognitive impairment or dementia. Methods: Images of an analog clock drawn by 3,263 cognitively intact and 160 impaired subjects were collected during in-person dementia evaluations by the Framingham Heart Study. We processed the CDT images, participant’s age, and education level using a deep learning algorithm to predict dementia status. Results: When only the CDT images were used, the deep learning model predicted dementia status with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 81.3% ± 4.3%. A composite logistic regression model using age, level of education, and the predictions from the CDT-only model, yielded an average AUC and average F1 score of 91.9% ±1.1% and 94.6% ±0.4%, respectively. Conclusion: Our modeling framework establishes a proof-of-principle that deep learning can be applied on images derived from the CDT to predict dementia status. When fully validated, this approach can offer a cost-effective and easily deployable mechanism for detecting cognitive impairment.
