Data Summarization and Inference at Scale

This is the final report for the DOE ASCR grant SC-0022260, Data Summarization and Inference at Scale, PI: Alex Pothen, Purdue University. The goal of the project was to solve data-intensive and compute-intensive problems in the physical sciences, engineering, information science, data science, etc. by designing and implementing new algorithms that could work with a subset of the data. The four subgoals were: (a) The solution of problems where the data is too large to be stored in the memory of a computer. In this streaming model of computation, the data arrives as a stream of elements to the computer, each element is processed as it arrives, and a decision is made to discard the data or to store it; only a small subset of the data proportional to the size of the output solution is stored, and when all the data has been streamed, a solution to the problem is computed from the stored subset. (b) The use of machine learning methods to compute solutions to data-intensive problems. The use of GPUs is critical to obtain high performance on machine learning tasks, but their memory sizes are smaller relative to that of CPUs. For large-scale problems, the data is sampled many times, and small samples are used with repetition, for robustness, to compute solutions to inference tasks. This sampling reduces the memory required to solve the problem, but attention is needed to avoid slow convergence to the solutions, and reduced accuracy of inference. We propose submodular optimization, Large Language Models, and physics-informed neural networks to enable GPU computations here. (c) Modeling and visualization of high-dimensional data using interpretable features. Clinical proteomic data sets from immunology for the detection of cancer and other diseases are temporal and high-dimensional, and algorithms for visualizing these data sets using clinically interpretable features are lacking. We propose methods that compute distances based on the optimal transportation problem and graph edit distances to address this problem. We also propose the use of optimal transport-based distances, spatial statistics, and network structure to classify image data sets, We apply these algorithms to electron micrographs of the peripheral nervous system in the digestive tract. (d) The design of data-intensive algorithms on emerging architectures, specifically, noisy, intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. Quantum computers offer the possibility of exploring large solution spaces due to the principle of superposition, but current quantum computers are limited by few qubits, short coherence times due to noise, poor interconections among the qubits, etc. We propose the use of the divide and conquer paradigm to solve large-scale problems, wherein collections of small subproblems are solved on the quantum devices, and the solutions to the subproblems are integrated into a solution for the original problem on a classical computer.

Idaho National Laboratory Quality Of Service Dataset

The code is designed to run tests to generate and collect data from a Wi-Fi network using OPENWRT or a simulated a 5G network using Open5gs and UERANSIM. The tests simulate the network performing downloads or uploads of various files with a varying number of concurrent users. The tests use tcpdump to collect the network traffic but only stores the summarized data. The summarized datasets will be included.

Improved definition of crustal anomalies for Magsat data

Ongoing efforts to define and model external magnetic field activities are summarized. Data were obtained and plotted for the five international quiet days of each month Magsat was in orbit. The values of the magnetic field at midnight were also plotted for each of the quiet days. Results show that the zero level of the field fluctuates over the time interval considered. Statistical studies were made for the Kp and Ap indices and more sunspot numbers were obtained for the Magsat period. Satellite data are being thinned and reformatted to make them more amenable to testing the Dst and Sq corrections. The software for processing Magsat tapes is being tested with intermediate attitude data.

Automatic categorization of land-water cover types of the Green Swamp, Florida, using Skylab multispectral scanner (S-192) data

The techniques used and the results achieved in the successful application of Skylab Multispectral Scanner (EREP S-192) high-density digital tape data for the automatic categorizing and mapping of land-water cover types in the Green Swamp of Florida were summarized. Data was provided from Skylab pass number 10 on 13 June 1973. Significant results achieved included the automatic mapping of a nine-category and a three-category land-water cover map of the Green Swamp. The land-water cover map was used to make interpretations of a hydrologic condition in the Green Swamp. This type of use marks a significant breakthrough in the processing and utilization of EREP S-192 data.

Characterization of large 2219 aluminum alloy hand forgings for the space shuttle solid rocket booster

The mechanical properties, including fracture toughness, and stress corrosion properties of four types of 2219-T852 aluminum alloy hand forgings are presented. Weight of the forgings varied between 450 and 3500 lb at the time of heat treatment and dimensions exceeded the maximum covered in existing specifications. The forgings were destructively tested to develop reliable mechanical property data to replace estimates employed in the design of the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) and to establish minimum guaranteed properties for structural refinement and for entry into specification revisions. The report summarizes data required from the forgers and from the SRB Structures contractor.

Information from Jupiter's decametric radiation

Radiation associated with decametric bursts are observed from about 39.5 MHz downwards, and its occurrence probability depends partly on the central meridian longitude of Jupiter. Three central meridian longitude regions of emission are designated as Sources A, B, and C. Emissions from B and C regions are also dependent on Io's phase. The frequency band of noise storms drifts slowly up or down the spectrum. Pulses with durations of 20 microseconds display drifts at the rate of 1000 MHz/sec. Decametric data are used to estimate Jupiter's surface magnetic field strength to be 10 gauss; however, if the maximum emission, about 10 MHz, is the electron gyrofrequency at Io's orbit, the surface field strength would be about 800 gauss. A model of the emission beam control exercised by Io is summarized. Data are presented which indicate that the width of source A emissions results from the changes in the angle of Jovicentric declination of the earth. One of two recent theories places the plasmapause at least 50 Jupiter radii from the surface on the sunward side, and the other places it within Io's orbit.
