Performance Evaluation of Python Based Data Analytics Frameworks in Summit: Early Experiences

The explosion in the volumes of data generated from ever-larger simulation campaigns and experiments or observations necessitates competent tools for data wrangling and analysis). While the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) provides a variety of tools to perform data wrangling and data analysis tasks, Python based tools often lack scalability, or the ability to fully exploit the computational capability of OLCF’s Summit supercomputer. NVIDIA RAPIDS and Dask offer a promising solution to accelerate and distribute data analytics workloads from personal computers to heterogeneous supercomputing systems. We discuss early performance evaluation results of RAPIDS and Dask on Summit to understand their capabilities, scalability, and limitations. Our evaluation includes a subset of RAPIDS libraries, i.e., cuDF, cuML, and cuGraph, and Chainer’s CuPy, and their multi-GPU variants when available. We also draw on the observed trends from the performance evaluation results to discuss best practices for maximizing performance.

National-scale remotely sensed lake trophic state from 1984 through 2020

Lake trophic state is a key ecosystem property that integrates a lake’s physical, chemical, and biological processes. Despite the importance of trophic state as a gauge of lake water quality, standardized and machine-readable observations are uncommon. Remote sensing presents an opportunity to detect and analyze lake trophic state with reproducible, robust methods across time and space. We used Landsat surface reflectance data to create the first compendium of annual lake trophic state for 55,662 lakes of at least 10 ha in area throughout the contiguous United States from 1984 through 2020. The dataset was constructed with FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reproducible) in mind, where data are publicly available, relational keys from parent datasets are retained, and all data wrangling and modeling routines are scripted for future reuse. Together, this resource offers critical data to address basic and applied research questions about lake water quality at a suite of spatial and temporal scales.

BASIN-3D Data Integration for Selected ARM Data Field Campaign Report

The purpose of this data services request was to demonstrate integration of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility’s “met” datastreams with time series data from other earth science data sources using the BASIN-3D data synthesis software tool. BASIN-3D is an open-source Python library that enables researchers to integrate data across configured public and private data sources. It provides a common query language for researchers to request measurement locations and time series data based on specified locations, variables, time period, statistics, aggregation, and data quality. BASIN-3D acquires the data that match the query from each configured data source and translates the results into harmonized vocabularies, thus reducing researchers' data-wrangling effort. In addition, because the queries are executed on demand, researchers can easily regenerate their synthesized data sets as new data and/or data updates become available, eliminating one-off data products. BASIN-3D can output data using a variety of different data structures for end-user applications including Python pandas data frames and hdf5 output formats.

Advancing Open Science through Public-Private Partnerships

Rapid technology developments are changing the way data-driven research is performed within the science community. With the emergence of cloud computing, this has quickly become a viable approach for enabling “science at scale”. Researchers are no longer hindered by obstacles of data management and data wrangling, allowing them to quickly discover, access and perform analysis on extremely large datasets. Infrastructures that move data out of institutional silos and into a computational platform, will ensure that data and tools are accessible to all users. NASA’s Interagency Implementation and Advanced Concepts Team (IMPACT) seeks to address these rapid technology developments by establishing Space Act Agreements with selected partners from the public-private sector working in the area of cloud computing. These agreements aim to explore new opportunities with commercial cloud providers to accelerate open science and enable discovery, access and use of data sets on the cloud. In addition, they will also help establish training workshops for the science community to help researchers utilize the cloud for science. In this talk, we will present an overview of current and new partnerships we are developing to support open science and open data initiatives.

py4DSTEM: A Software Package for Four-Dimensional Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy Data Analysis

Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) allows for imaging, diffraction, and spectroscopy of materials on length scales ranging from microns to atoms. By using a high-speed, direct electron detector, it is now possible to record a full two-dimensional (2D) image of the diffracted electron beam at each probe position, typically a 2D grid of probe positions. These 4D-STEM datasets are rich in information, including signatures of the local structure, orientation, deformation, electromagnetic fields, and other sample-dependent properties. However, extracting this information requires complex analysis pipelines that include data wrangling, calibration, analysis, and visualization, all while maintaining robustness against imaging distortions and artifacts. In this paper, we present py4DSTEM, an analysis toolkit for measuring material properties from 4D-STEM datasets, written in the Python language and released with an open-source license. We describe the algorithmic steps for dataset calibration and various 4D-STEM property measurements in detail and present results from several experimental datasets. We also implement a simple and universal file format appropriate for electron microscopy data in py4DSTEM, which uses the open-source HDF5 standard. We hope this tool will benefit the research community and help improve the standards for data and computational methods in electron microscopy, and we invite the community to contribute to this ongoing project.

Introducing SpaceNet 9 - Cross-Modal Satellite Imagery Registration for Natural Disaster Responses

Computer vision algorithms are increasingly leveraged to accelerate geospatial analysis for disaster response and recovery. As the diversity of remote sensing imagery grows with optical, SAR, and other modalities, a perquisite for analytics is cross-modal image registration. There is a high potential to harness computer vision for this pre-processing requirement toward enabling downstream analytics such as heterogeneous change detection, automated feature extraction, and data fusion. Advancement in these areas has the potential to simplify data wrangling tasks and further accelerate disaster response timelines. The SpaceNet 9 challenge (launching in mid-2024) focuses on addressing the cross-modal image registration problem and demonstrating the utility of such modules on earthquake impacted scenarios. This paper describes the motivation for the SpaceNet 9 and provides a first overview of the dataset, the baseline algorithm, and implications for seeking cross-modal image registration in Earth observation. Code is available at https://github.com/SpaceNetChallenge/SpaceNet9.

Creating a Tools Ecosystem for Cross-Discipline Environmental Data Reuse

Reusing data is difficult even within well-defined science communities and only gets worse when combining data from multiple communities and disciplines. Through the lens of current work on constructing an environmental epidemiological data set from multiple disciplinary sources, we demonstrate the need for a new tool ecosystem to support heterogeneous Big Data science. Extending existing community standards for schemas and/or data formats through human auditing and wrangling of the data is not feasible at scale. This work therefore suggests new approaches for the multi-disciplinary communities to build a shared tool ecosystem for big data. We discuss both the larger context of data wrangling of epidemiological data sets for novel artificial intelligence algorithms and the specific lessons from working with these multi-disciplinary data sets. Adopting a more model-driven, automatable approach promises not only better efficiency but also removes key sources of human-generated errors and promotes reuse and reproducibility of science data.

A Preliminary Development of The Intelligent Change Detection System (ICDS): Using Machine Learning to Combat Change Blindness in Remote Operation Environments

The emergence of Advance Air Mobility (AAM) will increase the number and types of aerial vehicles operating in shared airspaces, which will subsequently affect the amount of actionable data that ground control station operators (GCSOs) will be expected to manage. In this environment, GCSOs are particularly susceptible to the visual perceptual phenomenon known as change blindness, in which a stimulus undergoes a change without the change being noticed by its observer. A machine agent designed to detect change blindness and mitigate the effects could improve human agent performance in a data-saturated remote operations environment. The objective of this paper is to describe a proof-of-concept system architecture that integrates real-time eye tracking and vehicle telemetry data to prevent human-agent errors resulting from change blindness while operating aircraft from a remote ground control station (GCS).
