Performance deterioration based on in-service engine data: JT9D jet engine diagnostics program

Results of analyses of engine performance deterioration trends and levels with respect to service usage are presented. Thirty-two JT9D-7A engines were selected for this purpose. The selection of this engine fleet provided the opportunity of obtaining engine performance data starting before the first flight through initial service such that the trend and levels of engine deterioration related to both short and long term deterioration could be more carefully defined. The performance data collected and analyzed included in-flight, on wing (ground), and test stand prerepair and postrepair performance calibrations with expanded instrumentation where feasible. The results of the analyses of these data were used to: (1) close gaps in previously obtained historical data as well as augment the historical data with more carefully obtained data; (2) refine preliminary models of performance deterioration with respect to usage; (3) establish an understanding of the relationships between ground and altitude performance deterioration trends; (4) refine preliminary recommendations concerning means to reduce and control deterioration; and (5) identify areas where additional effort is required to develop an understanding of complex deterioration issues.

Data engineering systems: Computerized modeling and data bank capabilities for engineering analysis

The Data Engineering System (DES) is a computer-based system that organizes technical data and provides automated mechanisms for storage, retrieval, and engineering analysis. The DES combines the benefits of a structured data base system with automated links to large-scale analysis codes. While the DES provides the user with many of the capabilities of a computer-aided design (CAD) system, the systems are actually quite different in several respects. A typical CAD system emphasizes interactive graphics capabilities and organizes data in a manner that optimizes these graphics. On the other hand, the DES is a computer-aided engineering system intended for the engineer who must operationally understand an existing or planned design or who desires to carry out additional technical analysis based on a particular design. The DES emphasizes data retrieval in a form that not only provides the engineer access to search and display the data but also links the data automatically with the computer analysis codes.

Open-Source Data Engineering at NASA: CCMC's Approach to Managing Petabyte-Scale Heliophysics Data

The Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) leads heliophysics research by providing open access to numerous models and their outputs. Our resources are available on-demand and continuously updated with real-time data, covering sun-earth interactions across multiple domains. These domains include coronal, heliosphere, inner and global magnetosphere, ionosphere, thermosphere, and lower atmosphere interactions. Operating in a hybrid environment, CCMC utilizes both self-owned hardware and Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure. Managing petabytes of data across multiple locations necessitates robust data engineering solutions. To address this challenge, CCMC has adopted industry-standard and open-source tools. We use Apache Airflow as our primary data engineering platform, Python for scripting and data processing, and GitLab for version control and CI/CD. Additionally, we employ Kubernetes for containerized services, Grafana and Prometheus for metrics and monitoring, and Terraform and Puppet for reproducible infrastructure as code. This presentation will discuss lessons learned from our data engineering experiences, platforms evaluated but found unsuitable for our scientific data requirements, and specific techniques developed to enhance data transfer speed and reliability. By using these technologies effectively, CCMC continues to advance heliophysics research through efficient data management and open-access modeling.

Enhancements to the Engine Data Interpretation System (EDIS)

The Engine Data Interpretation System (EDIS) expert system project assists the data review personnel at NASA/MSFC in performing post-test data analysis and engine diagnosis of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). EDIS uses knowledge of the engine, its components, and simple thermodynamic principles instead of, and in addition to, heuristic rules gathered from the engine experts. EDIS reasons in cooperation with human experts, following roughly the pattern of logic exhibited by human experts. EDIS concentrates on steady-state static faults, such as small leaks, and component degradations, such as pump efficiencies. The objective of this contract was to complete the set of engine component models, integrate heuristic rules into EDIS, integrate the Power Balance Model into EDIS, and investigate modification of the qualitative reasoning mechanisms to allow 'fuzzy' value classification. The results of this contract is an operational version of EDIS. EDIS will become a module of the Post-Test Diagnostic System (PTDS) and will, in this context, provide system-level diagnostic capabilities which integrate component-specific findings provided by other modules.

A study of mass data storage technology for rocket engine data

The results of a nine month study program on mass data storage technology for rocket engine (especially the Space Shuttle Main Engine) health monitoring and control are summarized. The program had the objective of recommending a candidate mass data storage technology development for rocket engine health monitoring and control and of formulating a project plan and specification for that technology development. The work was divided into three major technical tasks: (1) development of requirements; (2) survey of mass data storage technologies; and (3) definition of a project plan and specification for technology development. The first of these tasks reviewed current data storage technology and developed a prioritized set of requirements for the health monitoring and control applications. The second task included a survey of state-of-the-art and newly developing technologies and a matrix-based ranking of the technologies. It culminated in a recommendation of optical disk technology as the best candidate for technology development. The final task defined a proof-of-concept demonstration, including tasks required to develop, test, analyze, and demonstrate the technology advancement, plus an estimate of the level of effort required. The recommended demonstration emphasizes development of an optical disk system which incorporates an order-of-magnitude increase in writing speed above the current state of the art.

BIRP - A way to search through image engineering data

Several hundred thousand images have been returned by planetary missions and by earth-orbiting satellites. Locating specific images for study based on engineering data can be cumbersome and time consuming if done manually. BIRP, a FORTRAN program for small computers, is designed to quickly search through catalogs of image engineering data. A description of the desired images is entered and the BIRP program finds the images meeting the requirements. A videodisk player or microfiche reader may be controlled by BIRP so that images can be viewed immediately after a search. A search through 50,000 images on a single parameter takes less than 1 min on a minicomputer. Data for each parameter is stored in a separate file so that the number of files and thus the storage space required may be varied to fit computers with different storage capacities. Most modern minicomputers with FORTRAN compilers and an 8-bit byte variable type may use BIRP with minor modifications to the program.
