EPOC Deep Dive Retrospective: A Brief Overview of 7 years of Science Engagement Discussions

Understanding the appropriate ways cyberinfrastructure can be designed, implemented, and executed for scientific use cases requires a deep understanding of the way that researchers and educators interact with technology, and how it may be best implemented to suit their needs. The Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC) has conducted a series of scientific “Deep Dives” of use cases at partner institutions to better understand the requirements for modern scientific innovation across the United States research complex. The results of these activities have revealed gaps in the way that technology has been used to foster research activities. This gap in cyberinfrastructure support has impacts for the overall productivity and innovation possibilities for scientific users.

Nuclear safety Enhanced: A Deep dive into current and future RAVEN applications

As the horizon of nuclear energy expands with the advent of small modular reactors, IV generation reactors, and fusion reactors, there is a growing perspective that the licensing process could benefit from a more comprehensive approach. Moving beyond traditional deterministic and PRA analysis might pave the way for a novel safety analysis paradigm propelled by the increasing computational power at our disposal. This paper explores different methodologies that can improve the outcomes of nuclear safety analysis. These range from uncertainty quantification techniques, aimed at enhancing the precision of safety margins, to deploying dynamic event trees by driving system code simulations, capturing the potential evolutions of severe accidents. These methodologies introduce innovative dimensions to safety analysis, considering the consequences of postulated events and the dynamics of accident sequences. However, they also bring forth challenges, especially in managing the complexity and sheer volume of potential scenarios. The paper touches upon some strategies to counter these challenges, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and continuous evolution in the face of emerging nuclear safety concerns. Additionally, the paper sheds light on the need for advanced tools to apply these methodologies. Among these tools is RAVEN, an open-source software designed for parametric and probabilistic analyses. Its core components, including distribution, sampler, and reduced order model, enable various applications, from risk assessment and mitigation to dynamic learning and plant control logic simulations.

Hydropower Supply Chain Gap Analysis

In 2022, DOE conducted supply chain "deep dives" for renewable energy technologies, including hydropower (Uria-Martinez, Hydropower Industry Supply Chain Deep Dive Assessment 2022). The deep dive identified several challenges in the current hydropower supply chain. In addition, Nguyen et. al (2022) conducted an analogous deep-dive assessment on large (> 100-MW) power transformers (LPTs), a critical component of hydropower installations, and concluded that the LPTs as well as several upstream components and materials also have domestic supply chain challenges. These deep dives were the initial high-level assessments of these supply chains and were focused on identifying the biggest issues. Both recommended further investigation. In the two years since the deep dives were published, the Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO) has focused on improving our understanding of the hydropower supply chain and developing strategies for addressing these challenges. Because the challenges outlined above are most acute for large hydropower systems, most of the report and specifically, this report concentrates on the larger > 100-MW hydropower systems. Early in 2023, DOE's Secretary of Energy asked the Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO) to engage the hydropower community and seek input on strategies to secure and encourage domestic manufacturing. WPTO has established three focus areas for engagement: 1) Define the market for planned rehabilitations and new construction of the domestic fleet, 2) Provide insights for policies, incentives, loan programs, and technology investments to encourage domestic content, and 3) Define the existing and required domestic hydropower manufacturing capabilities and workforce. This report summarizes these efforts and complements the earlier work by further exploring the identified challenges and identifying potential actions to address these challenges. Furthermore, we conducted a detailed gap analysis of the domestic hydropower supply chain, down to the component level. From this analysis, we then make specific, actionable recommendations for closing these gaps. Section 2 of the report summarizes recent (i.e., since 2021) legislation impacting hydropower deployment and/or its supply chain. It then describes the efforts of WPTO to assess and improve the hydropower supply chain since the publication of the deep-dive assessments. In Section 3, the report updates the earlier supply chain and market studies, identifying specific capabilities by company and location. Section 4 outlines the hydropower demand signal for both new builds due to clean energy goals as well as refurbishments and upgrading of the current domestic fleet. Section 5 is a detailed gap analysis while Section 6 provides actionable recommendations for closing the gaps. Section 7 concludes the report by linking the recommendations to the identified gaps and discusses future efforts.

Universal Electronic‐Structure Relationship Governing Intrinsic Magnetic Properties in Permanent Magnets

An electronic-structure-centered perspective is presented on permanent-magnet (PM) design, highlighting two key levers, that is, saturation magnetization (M s ), governed by 3d-band filling and exchange physics, and magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE), arising from spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on anisotropic orbital populations. Reviewing current practices, including DFT-based MAE/J ij extraction, atomistic-spin and micromagnetic modeling, and high-throughput machine learning (ML) pipelines, three bottlenecks limiting predictive discovery is identified that is i) electronic-structure accuracy for small MAE (sensitive to functional choice, Hubbard U, and many-body effects), ii) finite-temperature and kinetic realism (phonon/magnon renormalization, ordering kinetics), and iii) descriptor and multiscale decoupling (lack of SOC-weighted and orbital-resolved fingerprints). Deep dives into the electronic-structure of Nd─Fe─B and Fe─N show how these fingerprints govern magnetic performance, motivating DFT- and quantum-mechanics-based descriptors for discovery. Unbiased, structure-driven exploration, coupled with high-throughput simulations, ML, generative AI, and reasoning models, accelerates candidate identification and propagates insights across scales. Addressing supply-chain risks, on future needs of designing “critical-element-free” magnets with tailored microstructure and high energy products is emphasized. By integrating electronic fingerprints, AI reasoning, and multiscale modeling, a practical roadmap is provided for rare-earth-lean or rare-earth free, high-performance, sustainable PMs.
