A Design Reference Mission (DRM) for a NOAA Space Weather monitoring platform that provides warning times greater than 20 minutes with a 10-year operational timeline is presented. The summary of the DRM includes technology drivers for a subscale flight demonstration to reduce risk for the operational mission.
Developing an executable low-thrust trajectory for use in a spaceflight mission requires the design and optimization of a deterministic trajectory as well as the validation that the selected architecture is robust to some set of uncertainties, execution errors, and potential contingencies. Uncertainty in the ability of the spacecraft and its launch vehicle to execute a trajectory as well as potential deviations such as in-flight anomalies combine with design-to constraints and requirements to complicate the optimization problem. The approach by which robust mission design was accomplished for the initial capability of NASA’s Gateway is presented as well as associated results.

New developments in automated optimal experimental design within the PSE+ software ecosystem. Advancements in user experience (to reduce the time taken to perform optimal experiment design) and computational capabilities (allowing more diverse experimental design) are shown with an example relevant to critical minerals and materials. Also, a small tutorial on science-based optimal experimental design and novel contributions therein are presented.
A totally passive design was completed for the thermal control of the Galileo entry probe during its transit to the planet Jupiter. The design utilizes radio isotope heater units, multilayer insulation blankets and a thermal radiator in conjunction with a design conductance support structure to achieve both the required storage and critical initial planet atmosphere entry temperatures. The probe transit thermal design was completed and verified based on thermal vacuum testing of a prototype probe thermal test model.

Simulation of spacecraft battery operation is implemented. Robust design experiment to obtain optimum battery operational parameters is performed. It is found that short term tests using robust design of experiments can provide guidelines for optimum battery operation. It is decided to use robust design approach to provide guidelines for battery operation on current spacecraft in orbit as batteries age (GRO, UARS, EUVE, TOPEX).
This presentation provides an overview of EVA batteries and introduces the concept of designing lithium ion batteries that resist the propagation of a single cell catastrophic failure. Thermal runaway initiation methods are briefly discussed, and the safe performance of the resulting designs is summarized. Approached in an incremental fashion, each subsequent battery design is introduced, ending with a current development for the Exploration EVA spacesuit. Challenges in achieving safe design performance with limited internal volume are briefly discussed and forward work is identified. Video examples of both propagating and non-propagating designs are included.
