Preliminary Assessment of Operational Hazards and Safety Requirements for Airborne Trajectory Management (ABTM) Roadmap Applications

A set of five developmental steps building from the NASA TASAR (Traffic Aware Strategic Aircrew Requests) concept are described, each providing incrementally more efficiency and capacity benefits to airspace system users and service providers, culminating in a Full Airborne Trajectory Management capability. For each of these steps, the incremental Operational Hazards and Safety Requirements are identified for later use in future formal safety assessments intended to lead to certification and operational approval of the equipment and the associated procedures. Two established safety assessment methodologies that are compliant with the FAA's Safety Management System were used leading to Failure Effects Classifications (FEC) for each of the steps. The most likely FEC for the first three steps, Basic TASAR, Digital TASAR, and 4D TASAR, is "No effect". For step four, Strategic Airborne Trajectory Management, the likely FEC is "Minor". For Full Airborne Trajectory Management (Step 5), the most likely FEC is "Major".

Environmental Benefits Assessment of the Traffic Aware Strategic Aircrew Requests Concept

Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions has been a focus area of the scientific community for the past several years. Specifically, the aviation industry has set goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, providing a sustainable transportation mechanism with minimal impacts on the environment. This reduction must be accomplished through several means, including advanced technology, sustainable propulsion, efficient air traffic management, and improved operations. A potential solution for improving operations in an efficient air traffic management system is the Traffic Aware Strategic Aircrew Requests (TASAR) concept. The TASAR concept applies onboard automation for the purpose of advising the pilot of route modifications that would be beneficial to the flight, leading to a decrease in direct operating costs through fuel burn reduction and shorter flight times. This report discusses analyses that provide an estimate of the potential environmental benefits that result from the application of the TASAR concept. The data used for this benefits assessment was gathered during an operational evaluation on revenue flights with an airline partner between July 2018 and April 2019. The analyses in this report determined that there are impactful potential environmental benefits to be realized using the TASAR concept.

Traffic Aware Strategic Aircrew Requests

In 2016, a five-step roadmap was developed for the Traffic Aware Strategic Aircrew Requests (TASAR) project to achieve the full benefits of Airborne Trajectory Management (ABTM), a key enabler of the Digital Flight Vision. This presentation gives an overview of the TASAR roadmap for the ATD TIM in September 2021.

The use of precession modulation for nutation control in spin-stabilized spacecraft

The relations which determine the nutation effects induced in a spinning spacecraft by periodic precession thrust pulses are derived analytically. By utilizing the idea that nutation need only be observed just before each precession thrust pulse, a difficult continuous-time derivation is replaced by a simple discrete-time derivation using z-transforms. The analytic results obtained are used to develop two types of modulated precession control laws which use the precession maneuver to concurrently control nutation. Results are illustrated by digital simulation of an actual spacecraft configuration.
