Modeling and Analysis of a Micro-reactor using the DireWolf Code Suite

Micro-reactors, specifically those cooled with heat pipes, are tightly coupled systems which require multi-physics tools to accurately model both steady-state and transient behavior. Idaho National Laboratory’s DireWolf code suite is tailor-built to model heat-pipe reactors. DireWolf’s ability to model the coupled steady-state behavior of a heat-pipe micro-reactor are demonstrated herein. The DireWolf modeling methodology is described, and a micro-reactor design is introduced. A full-core model is developed, and the steady-state coupled neutronics-thermal analysis is performed. Results of the analyses, including flux, power, and temperature distributions are presented and discussed. This is a Westinghouse Electric Company (WEC) led publication.

Transient Analysis of a Micro-reactor using the DireWolf Code Suite

Transient analyses of heat pipe micro-reactors are necessary to ensure that hypothetical accident scenarios do not comprise reactor safety. Due to its small size and reliance on heat-pipes for cooling, the micro-reactor design introduced in this paper is a tightly coupled system which requires multi-physics tools to accurately model transient events. Idaho National Laboratory’s DireWolf code suite based on the MOOSE framework is tailor-built to model heat-pipe reactors. This paper demonstrates DireWolf’s ability to simulate the coupled thermal-neutronics transient behavior of a heat-pipe micro-reactor. The transient events presented here include an inadvertent rotation of all control drums simultaneously and a sudden complete ejection of a single control drum. A detailed description of each event is provided along with simulation results, including time dependent power and temperature distributions, and discussion. This is a Westinghouse Electric Company (WEC) led publication.

Asymptotic hydrogen redistribution analysis in yttrium-hydride-moderated heat-pipe-cooled microreactors using DireWolf

Yttrium hydride (YH x ) is one of the materials being considered for moderating thermal and epithermal nuclear microreactors. One potential issue with YH x use is that the hydrogen redistributes in the hydride when thermal and concentration gradients are present. This hydrogen redistribution leads to spatial gradients in the hydrogen concentration, thus affecting neutron transport in the reactor. Here, by building upon observations in prior works, this paper aims to gain a better understanding of the reactivity feedback associated with such hydrogen redistributions. In particular, we wish to understand the sign (+/–) of the hydrogen redistribution neutronic feedback, its order of magnitude, and its underlying physical causes. To achieve this goal, the DireWolf multiphysics software driver was used to solve the coupled radiation transport, heat transfer, heat pipe two-phase flow, and hydrogen redistribution equations for the Simplified Microreactor Benchmark Assessment (SiMBA) problem, a full-core microreactor numerical benchmark developed at Idaho National Laboratory.

Studies of the influence of heat pipe model and coupling strategy in heat pipe microreactor simulations using Sockeye

This work demonstrates various modeling approaches for thermally coupling heat pipes to a graphite monolithic block in a microreactor context, accounting for the presence of a gap. We show that heat pipe model selection has a significant impact on the transient behavior of a three-dimensional coupled microreactor assembly problem by comparing results obtained using different heat pipe models from the heat pipe code Sockeye. Additionally, we show that the choice of coupling strategy has significant consequences for both accuracy and performance. Furthermore, we found that our heat flux transfer strategy exhibited greater accuracy than our temperature transfer strategy, even when comparing a loose coupling of the heat flux transfer strategy to a tight coupling of the temperature transfer strategy. Although this research uses only theoretical test problems, it provides important insights in modeling thermal fluids phenomena in heat pipe microreactors.
