Dual Channel Dual Staging: Hierarchical and Portable Staging for GPU-Based In-Situ Workflow

In-situ workflows have emerged as an attractive approach for addressing data movement challenges at very large scales. Since GPU-based architectures dominate the HPC landscapes, porting these in-situ workflows, and, specifically, the inter-application data exchange, to GPU-based systems can be challenging. Technologies such as GPUDirect RDMA (GDR), which is typically used for I/O in GPU applications as an optimization that circumvents the CPU overhead, can be leveraged to support bulk data exchanges between GPU applications. However, current GDR design often lacks performance portability across HPC clusters built with different hardware configurations. Furthermore, the local CPU may also be effectively used as an auxiliary communication mechanism to offload data exchanges. In this paper, we present a dual channel dual staging approach for efficient, scalable, and performance-portable inter-application data exchange for in-situ workflows. This approach exploits the data access pattern within in-situ workflows along with the inherent execution asynchrony to accelerate data exchanges and, at the same time, improve performance portability. Specifically, the dual channel dual staging method leverages both the local CPU and the remote data staging server to build a hierarchical joint staging area and uses this staging area to transform blocking inter-application bulk data exchanges into best-effort local data movements between GPU and CPU. The dual channel dual staging is implemented as a portability extension of the Dataspaces-GPU staging framework. We present an experimental evaluation of its performance, portability, and scalability using this implementation on three leadership GPU clusters. The evaluation results demonstrate that the dual channel dual staging method saves up to 75% in data-exchange time compared to host-based, GDR, and alternate portable designs, while maintaining scalability (up to 512 GPUs) and performance portability across the three platforms.

Dual-Fuel Ammonia Equivalence Ratio Sweep Data

Ammonia (NH3) has garnered significant interest as an alternative fuel for meeting international emissions reduction mandates in sectors with high weight and distance requirements, such as shipping. Technical barriers and unanswered questions remain on the combustion strategies that can maximize ammonia utilization and minimize emissions. Prior research studies at the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory have shown strong performance with NH3 under dual-fuel mode using conventional diesel combustion (CDC) manifold air pressure settings. Diesel airflow was initially used to simplify retrofitting (no turbocharger modification), which resulted in air-fuel equivalence ratios (λ) greater than 1.5. To characterize potential improvements in dual-fuel NH3 combustion performance at richer in-cylinder conditions, a global λ sweep compared the use of early (E-pilot) and late (L-pilot) single diesel injections. The experiments were conducted at 1200 RPM and 12.8 ± 0.2 bar (75 % load), and λ was varied by decreasing the commanded air flow to the engine at greater than 90 % ammonia energy substitution level. A diesel injection timing sweep was conducted for both the injection strategies at fixed λ, and the timing with the lowest engine-out N2O emissions was identified. The results indicated an optimal balance between CO2,eq and thermal efficiency benefits both E-pilot and L-pilot injection strategy cases compared with CDC at a λ of 1.4. The indicated nitrogen-based emissions exhibited a strong correlation to the ratio of CA5–50 and ignition delay for L-pilot, but no apparent trend emerged for the E-pilot injection strategy at the tested boundary conditions. This dataset includes the raw experimental data and documentation of the experiment conditions and methods.

Potential Heating Energy and Cost Savings of Dual Fuel Heat Pump Controls as a Residential Building Equipment Retrofit in the U.S.

This study investigated the energy and cost savings potential by modeling a dual fuel heat pump system with its control for a residential building in (5A) cold climate in U.S. The simulation analysis showed that the application of the DFHP system and its control to the target building can save the heating energy by 42% over a gas furnace system (baseline system). Although the HP-only system can save more heating energy (i.e., 53%) over the baseline system than DFHP system does, the DFHP with its control demonstrated the higher cost savings when a time of use electricity rate was considered.

Dual quantum spin Hall insulator by density-tuned correlations in TaIrTe 4

The convergence of topology and correlations represents a highly coveted realm in the pursuit of new quantum states of matter. Introducing electron correlations to a quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator can lead to the emergence of a fractional topological insulator and other exotic time-reversal-symmetric topological order, not possible in quantum Hall and Chern insulator systems. Here, in this study, we report a new dual QSH insulator within the intrinsic monolayer crystal of TaIrTe 4 , arising from the interplay of its single-particle topology and density-tuned electron correlations. At charge neutrality, monolayer TaIrTe 4 demonstrates the QSH insulator, manifesting enhanced nonlocal transport and quantized helical edge conductance. After introducing electrons from charge neutrality, TaIrTe 4 shows metallic behaviour in only a small range of charge densities but quickly goes into a new insulating state, entirely unexpected on the basis of the single-particle band structure of TaIrTe 4 . This insulating state could arise from a strong electronic instability near the van Hove singularities, probably leading to a charge density wave (CDW). Remarkably, within this correlated insulating gap, we observe a resurgence of the QSH state. The observation of helical edge conduction in a CDW gap could bridge spin physics and charge orders. The discovery of a dual QSH insulator introduces a new method for creating topological flat minibands through CDW superlattices, which offer a promising platform for exploring time-reversal-symmetric fractional phases and electromagnetism.

Dual-map framework for noise characterization of quantum computers

In order to understand the capabilities and limitations of quantum computers, it is necessary to develop methods that efficiently characterize and benchmark error channels present on these devices. In this paper, we present a method that faithfully reconstructs a marginal (local) approximation of the effective noise (MATEN) channel, that acts as a single layer at the end of the circuit. We first introduce a dual-map framework that allows us to analytically derive expectation values of observables with respect to noisy circuits. These findings are supported by numerical simulations of the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) that also justify the MATEN, even in the presence of nonlocal errors that occur during a circuit. Finally, we demonstrate the performance of the method on Rigetti's Aspen-11 quantum computer for QAOA circuits up to six qubits, successfully predicting the observed measurements on a majority of the qubits.

Spin-squeezing-enhanced dual-species atom interferometric accelerometer employing large momentum transfer for precision test of the equivalence principle

Here, we theoretically investigate the feasibility of applying spin squeezing to a light pulse atom interferometer in the presence of large momentum transfer using off resonant Raman transitions, in order to enhance the sensitivity of accelerometry close to the Heisenberg limit. We also show how to implement this scheme in a dual-species atom interferometer for a precision test of the equivalence principle by measuring the Eötvös parameter, and to identify the spin squeezing protocol that is best suited for such an experiment. For a space borne platform in low Earth orbit, such a scheme may eventually enable the measurement of the Eötvös parameter with a sensitivity of the order of 10 -20 within 150 days when 10 5 atoms are employed in each cycle of the experiment.

Dual Event Generator (dual-evg) v1.0

The dual event generator is a event-based timing system implementation capable of synchronizing (with respect to clock, events and triggers) hundreds of downstreams devices. This has been in use by ALS for many years and this is a similar implementation, but with a synchronized dual-master frequency , as opposed to just one in a more conventional approach.

Longwave infrared (6.6–11.4 µm) dual-comb spectroscopy with 240,000 comb-mode-resolved data points at video rate

Using sub-3-cycle pulses from mode-locked Cr:ZnS lasers at λ ≈ 2.4 µm as a driving source, we performed high-resolution dual-frequency-comb spectroscopy in the longwave infrared (LWIR) range. A duo of highly coherent broadband (6.6–11.4 µm) frequency combs were produced via intrapulse difference frequency generation in zinc germanium phosphide (ZGP) crystals. Fast (up to 0.1 s per spectrum) acquisition of 240,000 comb-mode-resolved data points, spaced by 80 MHz and referenced to a Rb clock, was demonstrated, resulting in metrology grade molecular spectra of N 2 O (nitrous oxide) and CH 3 OH (methane). The key to high-speed massive spectral data acquisition was low intensity and phase noise of the LWIR combs and high (7.5%) downconversion efficiency, resulting in a LWIR power of 300 mW for each comb.

Visible-telecom tunable dual-band optical isolator based on dynamic modulation in thin-film lithium niobate

Optical isolators are an essential component of photonic systems. Current integrated optical isolators have limited bandwidths due to stringent phase-matching conditions, resonant structures, or material absorption. Here, we demonstrate a wideband integrated optical isolator in thin-film lithium niobate photonics. We use dynamic standing-wave modulation in a tandem configuration to break Lorentz reciprocity and achieve isolation. We measure an isolation ratio of 15 dB and insertion loss below 0.5 dB for a continuous wave laser input at 1550 nm. In addition, we experimentally show that this isolator can simultaneously operate at visible and telecom wavelengths with comparable performance. Isolation bandwidths up to ∼100 nm can be achieved simultaneously at both visible and telecom wavelengths, limited only by the modulation bandwidth. Our device’s dual-band isolation, high flexibility, and real-time tunability can enable novel non-reciprocal functionality on integrated photonic platforms.

Dual atom catalysts for rapid electrochemical reduction of CO to ethylene

Strong CO adsorption and facile CO dimerization are the key challenges in electrochemical CO2 reduction towards multi-carbon (C2+) products. We recently showed that CoPc immobilized on a single-walled carbon nanotube can selectively reduce CO2 to methanol. This is enabled through molecular strain, which dramatically improves the CO adsorption energy to CoPc, which in turn facilitates methanol formation. We now examine the extended Phthalocyanine (PcEx) dual atom catalyst (DAC), which is intrinsically strained and contains two catalyst centers, making it a candidate for reducing CO to C2+ products. Using Quantum Mechanics (QM), we screened 20 elements embedded in the PcEx, seeking catalysts with weak hydrogen binding, strong CO binding, and facile CO dimerization. We identi>ied Fe, Ru, Co, and Ir as the best performers and subsequently evaluated the entire CO to C2H4 mechanism (9 steps) using each of these elements as catalysts. In terms of limiting potential and overall exergonicity, we identi>ied CoPcEx as the best catalyst, followed by IrPcEx. We then examined the full CO to C2H4 mechanism on the bimetallic IrCoPcEx catalyst using grand canonical QM to obtain the reaction energetics as a function of applied potential. We conclude that the bimetallic IrCoPcEx is most promising for ef>iciently converting CO to ethylene.

Land-based wind plant wake characterization using dual-Doppler radar measurements at AWAKEN

Wind plant wakes have been shown to persist for tens of kilometers downstream in offshore environments, reducing the power output of neighboring plants, but their behavior on land remains relatively unexplored through observation. This study capitalizes on the unique and extensive field data collected for the American WAKE ExperimeNt (AWAKEN) project underway in northern Oklahoma. X-band dual-Doppler radars deployed at this site measure wind speed and direction at 25-m and 2-min resolution within a 30-km range, capturing the interactions between three neighboring wind plants. These measurements show that the wake of one wind plant extends at least 15 km downstream under easterly wind and stable atmospheric conditions. Though the wake wind speed increases within the first 10 km, it plateaus at 90% of the freestream wind speed. The spanwise velocity distribution within the wake initially shows the clear signature of the wind plant layout, which is smoothed as it propagates downstream, indicating spanwise momentum transfer is a key mechanism in wind plant wake development and recovery. These findings have important implications for wind plant siting decisions and resource assessments, and provide insights into atmospheric interactions at the wind plant scale.
