Multifunctional transition metal doped titanium dioxide reduced graphene oxide composites as highly efficient adsorbents and photocatalysts

A series of novel, mesoporous transition metal doped titanium dioxide-reduced graphene oxide composites are synthesized where the dopants were Mn, Co, Ni, Mo, and W. An in-situ synthesis method was used which involves a green, economic, hydrothermal process which can be scaled up easily. The composites show high surface areas (165–245 m 2 /g) and monomodal pore size distributions with average pore diameters in the range of 3–5 nm. The homogeneous distributions of the dopants are seen in SEM-EDX mapping data. The indirect band gaps of the composite materials are in the range of 2.20–2.48 eV. The composites show excellent dye adsorption activities where 100% adsorption of Rhodamine B occurs within 5 min when Mo–TiO 2 /rGO composite is used. Furthermore, the adsorbed dye can either be desorbed or photocatalytically degraded and the composite is reusable up to 10 cycles without losing significant activity. Mo–TiO 2 /rGO composite showed excellent adsorption of both cationic and anionic dyes at neutral pH.

3D Printing of Polyelectrolyte Complex-Integrated Photocurable Hydrogel Resins

In this study, we developed a photocurable hydrogel resin incorporating a polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) for 3D printing. Acrylamide-based monomers were formulated with varying PEC contents (0–15 wt %) in an aqueous KBr medium to fabricate patterned porous hydrogel structures. The morphology of printed hydrogels was characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Notably, the PEC5 and PEC10 formulations exhibited optimal thermal stability and compressive properties, attributed to the homogeneous distribution of PEC domains within the hydrogel matrix. Furthermore, dye adsorption experiments demonstrated excellent removal efficiency, highlighting the potential of PEC-containing hydrogels for environmental remediation applications, particularly in the treatment of dye-contaminated wastewater.

Deinterpenetration of IRMOF‐9.

One of the iconic characteristics of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is the possesssion of guest-accessible pores. Increasing pore size has a direct and often beneficial impact on a MOF's adsorption and separation properties. However, as pore size increases, the resulting void spaces are often filled by interpenetrated frameworks, where one or more networks crystallize within the pore system of another identical network, reducing the MOF's free volume and pore size. Furthermore, due to the thermodynamic favorability of interpenetration during solvothermal synthesis, techniques to synthetically differentiate interpenetrated from non-interpenetrated MOFs are paramount. This study reports the synthesis of deinterpenetrated IRMOF-9 via halide mediated deinterpenetrative conversion of Zn 4 O-derived IRMOF-9. IRMOF-9, when treated with ethylammonium bromide, is quasi-selectively etched, revealing the non-interpenetrated analogue, IRMOF-10 (deinterpenetrated IRMOF-9), which can be isolated prior to complete dissolution by the bromide solution. Dye adsorption, surface area and pore size distribution analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction are consistent with successful deinterpenetration.

Sequential Infiltration Synthesis (SIS) of In 2 O 3 -Based Porous Photoelectrodes for Molecular Sensitization

High-surface-area photoelectrodes are highly desirable for solar energy conversion applications, particularly in systems where surface-bound molecular chromophores are responsible for light absorption. To this end, porous Indium-Zinc-Oxide (IZO) frameworks are fabricated via Sequential Infiltration Synthesis (SIS) into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films followed by air annealing. A more complete understanding of the multimetal infiltration process conditions and postannealing temperature allows for precise control of zinc (Zn) incorporation to afford porous, conductive, transparent, and amorphous photoelectrodes. Uniform incorporation of both indium (In) and Zn is found to require extended diethylzinc (DEZ) exposures to compensate for remarkably slow precursor diffusion in the presence of indium oxyhydroxide nuclei. SIS-fabricated IZO photoelectrodes are structurally robust, electrochemically active, and exhibit dye adsorption that suggest practical surface area enhancements greater than 100×. In conclusion, these attributes establish SIS as a rapid, scalable, and reproducible route to photoelectrodes for solar energy conversion and hybrid interface characterization.

Depolymerization as a Design Strategy: Depolymerization Etching of Polymerization-Induced Microphase Separations

Thermally triggered depolymerization has traditionally been viewed through the lens of sustainability and recycling, not as a constructive tool for materials design. Herein, we show that selective, thermally triggered depolymerization to gaseous monomer serves as a solvent-free strategy for generating porosity in nanostructured polymer materials, offering a means to bypass the mass transport limitations inherent in conventional solution-based etching. As a demonstration platform, we employed polymerization-induced microphase separation (PIMS) to generate disordered bicontinuous block copolymer structures with embedded depolymerizable domains. By incorporating a methacrylate block susceptible to thermal depolymerization within a cross-linked, depolymerization-resistant styrenic matrix, we developed a process we term depolymerization etching of polymerization-induced microphase separations (DEPIMS). This approach enables highly selective and efficient domain removal via reversion to monomer to produce mesoporous materials with high surface areas (>200 m 2 /g). Subsequent surface functionalization yielded mesoporous adsorbents with tunable uptake kinetics and among the highest dye adsorption capacities reported for PIMS-derived materials, demonstrating the adaptability of the DEPIMS platform for chemical separations. DEPIMS can also be extended to a gram-scale, one-pot approach to yield mesoporous materials with recoverable monomer in under 12 h. These findings reposition thermal depolymerization from a sustainability tool to a broadly enabling strategy for scalable, on-demand fabrication of functional nanostructured materials.

Enhancing Enzyme-Mediated Hydrolysis of Mechanical Pulps by Deacetylation and Delignification

Alkaline induced deacetylation of the hemicellulose combined with subsequent mechanical refining enhanced the enzyme-mediated hydrolysis of pretreated corn stover. The addition of either NaOH (80 °C) or mild KOH (25 °C) to corn stover prior to mechanical refining led to greater than 80% deacetylation with the NaOH treatment also solubilizing low-molecular-weight lignin that was enriched in $β$-O-4 linkages with more than 25% and 13% of the total and surface lignin removed, respectively. Furthermore, the influence of deacetylation and delignification were further enhanced when NaOH was supplemented with 3% Na 2 SO 3 , resulting in 100% deacetylation, 34% delignification, and a >20% increase in the hydrolysis yield of the substrate xylan. A milder KOH treatment resulted in the retention of more than 95% of the lignin within the cellulose rich, water-insoluble fraction with no apparent change in the surface lignin. However, both methods resulted in enhanced xylan hydrolysis when treated with xylanases, suggesting that deacetylation had enhanced accessibility to the xylan present in the pretreated of corn stover. It was apparent that cellulose accessibility was also enhanced by partial delignification, as NaOH treatment resulted in a 65% and 43% increase in the Water Retention Value and Directed Orange dye adsorption, respectively.

Recent Progress on Emerging Applications of Hydrochar

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a prominent thermochemical technology that can convert high-moisture waste into a valuable product (called hydrochar) at a relatively mild treatment condition (180–260 °C and 2–10 MPa). With rapidly growing research on HTC and hydrochar in recent years, review articles addressing the current and future direction of this research are scarce. Hence, this article aims to review various emerging applications of hydrochars, e.g., from solid fuel to soil amendment, from electron storage to hydrogen storage, from dye adsorption, toxin adsorption, heavy metal adsorption to nutrient recovery, and from carbon capture to carbon sequestration, etc. This article further provides an insight in the hydrochar’s working mechanism for various applications and how the applications can be improved through chemical modification of the hydrochar. Finally, new perspectives with appropriate recommendations have been made to further unveil potential applications and its improvement through hydrochar and its modified version.

Chemically Cross-Linked Cellulose Nanocrystal Aerogels for Effective Removal of Cation Dye

In this study, porous aerogels were prepared by directional freeze-drying via cross-linking cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic acid) (PMVEMA) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The thermal properties and physical adsorption performance toward cation methylene blue dye of the obtained CNC aerogels were investigated. The maximum degradation temperature was increased from 324°C of CNCs to 355°C of cross-linked CNC aerogels. The dye adsorption isotherm results showed that the maximum methylene blue adsorption capacity of CNC aerogels was 116.2 mg g −1 , according to the Langmuir model, which was mainly due to the electrostatic attractions between negatively charged carboxyl groups or sulfonate groups on the CNC aerogles and cation MB molecules. The reusability test showed that the CNC aerogels contained the same dye adsorption performance in five adsorption/desorption cycles. Overall, this study described an ideal alternative for water purification with high dye adsorption capacity and enhanced physical performance.

Tailored mesoporous structures of lignin-derived nano-carbons for multiple applications

This work uses a one-step KOH activation for lignin precursors to produce ultra-high mesoporous activated carbons (ACs) with an unprecedented combination of the surface area of 3207 m 2 g -1 and mesopore ratio of 76%. The ACs are applied for supercapacitors (SCs) and methylene blue (MB) adsorption. The capacitance of the SCs in the three-electrode system reaches 812.3 F g -1 and demonstrates a remarkable maximum MB adsorption capacity of 1250 mg g -1 . By modifying the process conditions, the mesopore ratio of ACs could be controlled from 10% to 80%. Compared with one-step activation, a two-step method produced microporous carbons with a lower surface area of 1227 m 2 g -1 and a high micropore ratio of 73%. The capacitance of SCs with two-step ACs reached 228.1 F g -1 and the maximum adsorption capacity of 476.19 mg g -1 for MB adsorption. The two-step method limited the surface area but had a higher oxygen surface functionality, benefiting its electrochemical performance. A techno-economic analysis reveals that the one-step KOH activation-based process develops ACs with a minimum selling price of $7648/ton. In conclusion, this work demonstrates tuning the processing-structure-property-performance relationship of lignin-based ACs to make an economically viable domestic carbon source.

A quantitative model of charge injection by ruthenium chromophores connecting femtosecond to continuous irradiance conditions

A kinetic framework for the ultrafast photophysics of tris(2,2-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) phosphonated and methyl-phosphonated derivatives is used as a basis for modeling charge injection by ruthenium dyes into a semiconductor substrate. By including the effects of light scattering, dye diffusion, and adsorption kinetics during sample preparation and the optical response of oxidized dyes, quantitative agreement with multiple transient absorption datasets is achieved on timescales spanning femtoseconds to nanoseconds. In particular, quantitative agreement with important spectroscopic handles—the decay of an excited state absorption signal component associated with charge injection in the UV region of the spectrum and the dynamical redshift of a ~500 nm isosbestic point—validates our kinetic model. Pseudo-first-order rate coefficients for charge injection are estimated in this work, with an order of magnitude ranging from 10 11 to 10 12 s –1 . The model makes the minimalist assumption that all excited states of a particular dye have the same charge injection coefficient, an assumption that would benefit from additional theoretical and experimental exploration. Here, we have adapted this kinetic model to predict charge injection under continuous solar irradiation and find that as many as 68 electron transfer events per dye per second take place, significantly more than prior estimates in the literature.

Self‐Standing Chiral Covalent Organic Framework Thin Films with Full‐Color Tunable Guest‐Induced Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Abstract Exploring self‐standing chiral covalent organic framework (COF) thin films with controllable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is of paramount significance but remains a challenging task. Herein, we demonstrate the first example of self‐standing chiral COF films employing a polymerization‐dispersion‐filtration strategy. Pristine, low‐quality chiral COF films were produced by interfacial polymerization and then re‐dispersed into COF colloidal solutions. Via vacuum assisted assembly, these COF colloids were densely stacked and assembled into self‐standing, pure chiral COF films ( L‐ / D‐ CCOF‐F) that were transparent, smooth, crack‐free and highly crystalline. These films were tunable in thicknesses, areas, and roughness, along with strong diffuse reflectance circular dichroism (DRCD) and cyan CPL signals, showing an intrinsic luminescence asymmetric factor ( g lum ) of ~4.3×10 −3 . Furthermore, these COF films served as host adsorbents to load various achiral organic dye guests through adsorption. The effective chiral transfer and energy transfer between CCOF‐F and achiral fluorescent dyes endowed the dyes with strong chirality and tunable DRCD, resulting in intense, full‐color‐tunable solid‐state CPL. Notably, the ordered arrangement of dye guest molecules within the preferentially oriented chiral pores of CCOF‐F contributed to an amplified | g lum | factor of up to 7.2×10 −2 , which is state‐of‐the‐art for COF‐based CPL materials. This work provides new insights into the design and fabrication of self‐standing chiral COF films, demonstrating their great potential for chiroptical applications.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Utilization of a Lignin-Based Adsorbent for Effective Removal of Azo Dye from Aqueous Solution

How to effectively remove toxic dyes from the industrial wastewater using a green low-cost lignocellulose-based adsorbent, such as lignin, has become a topic of great interest but remains quite challenging. In this study, cosolvent-enhanced lignocellulosic fractionation (CELF) pretreatment and Mannich reaction were combined to generate an aminated CELF lignin which is subsequently applied for removal of methylene blue and direct blue (DB) 1 dye from aqueous solution. 31P NMR was used to track the degree of amination, and an orthogonal design was applied to determine the relationship between the extent of amination and reaction parameters. The physicochemical, morphological, and thermal properties of the aminated CELF lignin were characterized to confirm the successful grafting of diethylenetriamine onto the lignin. The aminated CELF lignin proved to be an effective azo dye-adsorbent, demonstrating considerably enhanced dye decolorization, especially toward DB 1 dye (>90%). It had a maximum adsorption capacity of DB 1 dye of 502.7 mg/g, and the kinetic study suggested the adsorption process conformed to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The isotherm results also showed that the modified lignin-based adsorbent exhibited monolayer adsorption. The adsorbent properties were mainly attributed to the incorporated amine functionalities as well as the increased specific surface area of the aminated CELF lignin.

The pH-dependent orientation of N3 dye on a gold substrate is revealed using heterodyne-detected vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy

We report on systematic changes to the adsorption geometry of the dye N3 {[cis-bis(isothiocyanato)bis(2,2' -bipyridyl-4,4' -dicarboxylato ruthenium(II)]} on a gold substrate as the pH of the deposition environment is altered. The protonation states of the four --COOH groups of the N3 dye change according to the modified pH conditions, thus affecting the number of --COOH and --NCS functional groups that participate in the adsorption to gold. Here, we use heterodyne detected vibrational sum frequency generation (HD-VSFG) spectroscopy to obtain surface specific vibrational information on both --COOH and --NCS groups as a function of pH of the deposition conditions. Polarization-dependent HD-VSFG yields sets of complex χ (2) spectra, enabling us to perform a simultaneous fitting procedure to the polarization-dependent real and imaginary components and thus extract detailed structural information of the N3/gold interface. Overall, our results show that N3 preferentially adsorbs to gold either with two --COOH groups and one --NCS group in more acidic conditions or with one --COOH group and two --NCS groups in more basic conditions.
