ENDF/B-VIII.1

The ENDF/B-VIII.1 release is the newest evaluated nuclear data library produced, distributed, and recommended by CSEWG for use in nuclear science and technology applications. Among the many key advances, relative to the previous version ENDF/B-VIII.0, are: re-evaluation of 239Pu file by a joint international effort; updated 16,18O, 19F, 28-30Si, 50-54Cr, 55Mn, 54,56,57Fe, 63,65Cu, 139La, 233,235,238U, and 240,241Pu neutron nuclear data by the IAEA-coordinated INDEN collaboration; significant changes for 3He, 6Li, 9Be, 51V, 88Sr, 103Rh, 140,142Ce, Dy, 181Ta, Pt, 206-208Pb, and 234,236U neutron data; new nuclear data for the photo-nuclear, being 196 adopted from the IAEA2019 Photonuclear Data Library and one new file from JENDL-5; and new evaluations for the charged-particle and atomic sublibraries. Numerous thermal neutron scattering kernels were re-evaluated or provided for the very first time. Additionally, new covariance testing was implemented. ENDF/B-VIII.1 reduced bias in the simulations of many integral experiments with particular progress noted for fluorine, copper and stainless steel containing benchmarks. Data issues which had hindered the deployment of ENDF/B-VIII.0 for commercial nuclear power applications in high burn-up situations, were addressed. ENDF/B-VIII.1 data are distributed in both ENDF-6 and GNDS formats.

ENDF/B-VIII.1: Photonuclear Sublibrary

The photonuclear sublibrary aims to describe nuclear reactions between incident gamma particles and different nuclei. For ENDF/B-VIII.1, we adopted around 200 evaluations from the IAEA Coordinated Research Project (CRP) on photonuclear data while, for a few select mission-critical materials, evaluations from ENDF/B-VIII.0 were maintained. Additionally, many fixes to many files were implemented. Finally, ENDF/B-VIII.1 includes a new photonuclear file, 242 Pu, which was adopted from JENDL-5.0.

ENDF/B-VIII.1: Thermal Neutron Scattering Sublibrary

The thermal neutron scattering law (TSL) sublibrary aims to describe the interaction of incident neutrons at thermal or sub-thermal energies with different compound materials such fuels, moderators and special-purpose materials. In ENDF/B-VIII.1 there was a large number of new and updated TSL evaluations, including traditional moderators (light water, Beryllium metal, Beryllium Oxide, Calcium Hydride, plastics (Polystyrene and Lucite), graphite (reactor-grade and crystalline), anhydrous Hydrogen Fluoride, and heavy paraffinic oil); exotic moderators (Beryllium Carbide, Zirconium Hydride, Yttrium Hydride, Lithium-7 Hydride and Deuteride), FLiBe molten salt, structural materials and cladding (Silicon Carbide, Silicon Dioxide, Zirconium Carbide), fuels (Plutonium Dioxide, Uranium Carbide, Uranium metal, Uranium Nitride, Uranium Dioxide, Uranium Hydride), and special purpose materials. In ENDF/B-VIII.1 we also distribute alongside the evaluated files, a comma-separated file (CSV), named TSL_MAT_numbers.csv, which lists all evaluated files in the current release and their corresponding unique MAT number.

Release of ENDF/B-VIII.1β1-Based ACE Data Files

On March 1 st , 2023, the National Nuclear Data Center (NNDC) released the ENDF/B-VIII.1β1 nuclear data library, which contained neutron, spontaneous and neutron-induced fission yield, and alpha sublibraries. The library was released in the standard Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF) format. The files can be accessed on Brookhaven National Laboratory’s GitLab. The thermal scattering law (TSL) sublibrary will be released at a later date. The files provided in the neutron sublibrary were processed into A Compact ENDF (ACE)-formatted files, verified, and validated by the XCP-5 Nuclear Data Team. The resulting collection of ACE files will be referred to as the “e81b1” library. This report details the processing of these files and the quality assurance approach taken. This is not intended to be a full validation effort; rather, this library is intended to simply reproduce the released files for further validation testing by the community. The e81b1 ACE library will be released to the NNDC for access through GitLab and hosted locally on LANL computing resources. This library is only intended for analysis to support the future ENDF/B-VIII.1 release and should not be used for production results.

(U) The Effect of ENDF/B-VIII.1 on Jezebel

The 239 Pu Jezebel critical assembly of 1954-55 was modeled in great detail and reevaluated using ENDF/B-VII.1 cross sections, and a new simplified (homogeneous one-dimensional spherical) benchmark was derived. The new simplified model was similar to that derived by Hansen and Paxton in 1969, but its radius was modified so that its k eff was the average of the C/E’s (where C is the calculated k eff and E is the inferred experimental k eff ) of the four detailed models. When ENDF/B-VIII.0 data were released, a mismatch between the detailed and simplified models was introduced due to changes in the nickel cross sections, because the detailed models contain nickel but the simplified model does not. A revision of the simplified model realigned the detailed and simplified models. ENDF/B-VIII.1 data have now been released. The simplified and detailed Jezebel models have been run using preliminary ENDF/B-VIII.1 ACE files. In Sec. II, it is shown that the detailed and simplified models are still aligned. No revision of the simplified model is called for. These results were computed using MCNP6.3.

Benchmarking of ENDF/B-VIII.1 Thermal Scattering Library for Hydrogen

In correctly characterizing the energy and momentum transfer at thermal and cold energies between neutrons and its interacting medium, thermal scattering libraries, which details energy states due to the intra- and inter-molecular bond effects for the medium materials, are applied in place of free-gas cross section libraries in a particle transport simulation code. They are essential to the neutron performance of a neutron facility like SNS, where thermalized neutrons from 20 K liquid hydrogen and ambient (~300 K) water are transported to the beamlines for neutron scattering experiments in studying materials. Recently, a new version of thermal scattering library for parahydrogen and orthohydrogen at 14-20 K was developed and to be released in ENDF/B-VIII.1. It is, therefore, important to benchmark its impacts on the prediction of moderator performance due to the updates in the thermal scattering library. In this study, the recent ENDF/B-VIII.1 thermal scattering library was compared to the current ENDF/B-VII.1 one in the neutron performance calculations for the decoupled and coupled hydrogen moderators at SNS under theorized and real working conditions. In addition, the predictions using both thermal scattering libraries were benchmarked to the measurements of moderator performance. The consistency between the libraries was observed mostly for parahydrogen and the difference in orthohydrogen at cold neutron energies was noted.

ENDF/B-VIII.1: Updated Nuclear Reaction Data Library for Science and Applications

The ENDF/B-VIII.1 library is the newest recommended evaluated nuclear data file by the Cross Section Evaluation Working Group (CSEWG) for use in nuclear science and technology applications, and incorporates advances made in the six years since the release of ENDF/B-VIII.0. Among key advances made are that the 239 Pu file was reevaluated by a joint international effort and that updated 16,18 O, 19 F, 28–30 Si, 50–54 Cr, 55 Mn, 54,56,57 Fe, 63,65 Cu, 139 La, 233,235,238 U, and 240,241 Pu neutron nuclear data from the IAEA coordinated INDEN collaboration were adopted. Over 60 neutron dosimetry cross sections were adopted from the IAEA's IRDFF-II library. In addition, the new library includes significant changes for 3 He, 6 Li, 9 Be, 51 V, 88 Sr, 103 Rh, 140,142 Ce, Dy, 181 Ta, Pt, 206–208 Pb, and 234,236 U neutron data, and new nuclear data for the photonuclear, charged-particle and atomic sublibraries. Numerous thermal neutron scattering kernels were reevaluated or provided for the very first time. On the covariance side, work was undertaken to introduce better uncertainty quantification standards and testing for nuclear data covariances. The significant effort to reevaluate important nuclides has reduced bias in the simulations of many integral experiments with particular progress noted for fluorine, copper, and stainless steel containing benchmarks. Data issues hindered the successful deployment of the previous ENDF/B-VIII.0 for commercial nuclear power applications in high burnup situations. These issues were addressed by improving the 238 U and 239,240,241 Pu evaluated data in the resonance region. The new library performance as a function of burnup is similar to the reference ENDF/B-VII.1 library.

Including Chi-Nu 235 U PFNS Experimental Data into an ENDF/B-VIII.1 Release Candidate Evaluation

This report documents an evaluation of 235 U prompt fission neutron spectra (PFNS) that is a release candidate for the upcoming U.S. nuclear data library, ENDF/B-VIII.1. This evaluation differs from its predecessor, ENDF/B-VIII.0, mainly by the inclusion of 235 U PFNS measured by the Chi-Nu team of LANL and LLNL. This data set is the first one that covers the 235 U PFNS for continuous incident-neutron energies of 1⁻20 MeV and outgoing-neutron energies from 10 keV⁻10 MeV with high precision. Previous data sets were either measured in a limited energy range or with less precision. Hence, these new Chi-Nu data provide decisive information for the evaluation. The resulting evaluated data correspond well to the new experimental PFNS. The evaluated PFNS also produce average mean energies and 239 Pu/ 235 U PFNS in agreement with associated Chi-Nu data. If one uses the new evaluated data to predict the neutron multiplication factor, k eff , of selected ICSBEP critical assemblies, the differences of simulated values compared to those using ENDF/B-VIII.0 is modest (less than 55 pcm). This difference in k eff can be easily accommodated by changes in the 235 U average prompt fission neutron multiplicity that is currently being re-evaluated. In addition to that, the new PFNS predict on average 235 U LLNL pulsed-sphere neutron-leakage spectra better than ENDF/B-VIIII.0 PFNS.
