ENDFtk: A robust tool for reading and writing ENDF-formatted nuclear data

ENDFtk is a recently developed C++ and Python interface to interact with ENDF-6 formatted nuclear data files. It provides a robust and complete interface, allowing the reading and writing of all formats currently part of the ENDF-6 formats manual, as well as some non-ENDF formats used by the NJOY processing code. It provides an interface that mimics the names in the ENDF-6 formats manual as well as an equivalent interface using human-readable attribute names. It is robust and powerful enogh for nuclear data experts to develop complex applications, while also simple enough to be used non-experts to retrieve and manipulate evaluated nuclear data. ENDFtk offers the ability to easily interrogate and manipulate data either in large-scale code projects or in simple Python scripts. Here, in this paper, a brief overview of the interface is given, as well as more substantial examples demonstrating plotting simple data, interacting with more complex data, and writing new data to files. ENDFtk is open source and available for download via GitHub (https://github.com/njoy/ENDFtk).

Formatting and V&V of Consistent 238,240−24 2Pu $\overline{v}_p$ Evaluated Mean Values and Covariances

This report is in answer to the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program FY24 quarter 4 milestone that requires: “Format and V&V nu-bar means and covariances” for 238,240-242 Pu average prompt fission neutron multiplicities, $\overline{ν}$ p , that were obtained by a consistent evaluation leveraging the fission-event generator CGMF and a detailed uncertainty quantification of experimental data. It is described how nuclear data mean values and covariances were formatted using ENDFtk. Implementing the new 238,240-242 Pu $\overline{ν}$ p into the ENDF/B-VIII.1β 4 library leads to only small overall changes in criticality values of the Jezebel, Dirty Jezebel, Jupiter-001, Jupiter-002, EUCLID 3x2 and EUCLID 8x1 critical assemblies. Simulated k eff uncertainties due to $\overline{ν}$ p covariances change only little if cross-isotope covariances are considered or not for those assemblies with low percentage content of minor Pu isotopes. However, for the Dirty Jezebel critical assembly, that has a sizeable 240 Pu and non-negligible 241 Pu content, the simulated k eff uncertainties due to considering or neglecting cross-isotope $\overline{ν}$ p covariances is 443 versus 374 pcm.

Contributions for ENDF/B-VIII.1 Paper

It was discussed at WANDA2020 that some issues were found by the community and users in ENDF/B-VIII.0 covariances after their release. It was mentioned that one issue in testing ENDF/B-VIII.0 covariances was that they were provided by evaluators too late in the β-release phases that insufficient time for thorough testing was available. Therefore, the executive committee requested that first nuclear data covariances should already be delivered for ENDF/B-VIII.1β 1 in February 2023—about half a year earlier than was the case for ENDF/B-VIII.0. This additional time allowed for more stringent testing with LANL’s ENDFtk and CovVal codes, and ORNL’s AMPX code during the release phases. The LLNL covariance testing employed a combination of NJOY, empy tools from EMPIRE, and x4i.

Update on Covariance Data Testing Strategy at LANL [Slides]

LANL is working towards an ENDF/B-VIII.0-based Covariance Library, with several key goals and work processes outlined. This includes processing through NJOY’s ERRORR module, identifying and correcting mathematical and physical deficiencies, communicating across pipeline from evaluator to end user, understanding use cases and interpreting results, and releasing to customers. Their testing approach includes interaction, processing, checks (mathematical properties, constraints, and physical bounds), and error propagation.
