Exact solution of burst pressure for thick-walled pipes using the flow theory of plasticity

This paper develops an exact solution of burst pressure for defect-free, thick-walled pipes using the flow theory of plasticity in terms of the average shear stress yield criterion (or Zhu-Leis yield criterion). The pipe steel is assumed to obey the power-law strain hardening rule, and large plastic deformation is described by the finite strain theory. On this basis, internal pressure is obtained as a power series function of the effective strains on the inside and outside surfaces of the thick-walled pipe with use of the second Bernoulli numbers. At burst failure, the Zhu-Leis flow solution of burst pressure is determined as a power series solution, and the burst effective strains, the burst effective stresses, and the burst pressure are functions of the diameter ratio (D o / D i ), strain hardening exponent (n), and ultimate tensile strength (UTS). Similarly, the Tresca and von Mises flow solutions of burst pressure are also determined as a power series solution in terms of the Tresca and von Mises yield criteria. A general closed-from exact solution of burst pressure is then proposed for the three yield criteria, and the results showed that the proposed exact solution matches well with the power series solution for each yield criterion. Moreover, the von Mises flow solution is an upper bound prediction, the Tresca flow solution is a lower bound prediction, and the Zhu-Leis flow solution is an intermediate prediction that agrees well with the finite element analysis results of burst pressure for thick-walled pipes. Furthermore, two datasets of full-scale burst tests are then utilized to evaluate and validate the proposed flow solutions of burst pressure for both thin and thick-walled pipes.

Exact solutions of burst pressure for thick-walled cylinders in power-law strain hardening steels

Exact solutions of burst pressure for defect-free, thick-walled cylindrical pressure vessels with capped ends are developed using the flow theory of plasticity in terms of the Tresca, von Mises, and Zhu-Leis yield criteria. The material is assumed to obey a power-law strain hardening rule, and the finite strain theory is adopted to describe large plastic deformation. On this basis, internal pressure is obtained as a complex polynomial function of effective strains on the inside and outside surfaces of the pressure vessel with the use of the Bernoulli numbers. At burst failure, the effective strains and stresses on the inside and outside surfaces are first determined, and then three flow solutions of burst pressure are obtained as a power series function of the diameter ratio (D o /D i ), strain hardening exponent (n), and ultimate tensile strength (UTS). The power series solution is confirmed to agree well with the exact flow solution of burst pressure in a closed-form for each yield criterion, and the results show that the von Mises flow solution is an upper bound prediction, the Tresca flow solution is a lower bound prediction, and the Zhu-Leis flow solution is an intermediate prediction of burst pressure. In conclusion, two sets of full-scale burst test data are then utilized to evaluate and validate the proposed flow solutions of burst pressure for both thin-walled pipes and thick-walled cylindrical pressure vessels.

Comparing the MELCOR Aerosol Deposition Model with Exact Analytical Solutions

Exact analytical solutions are presented for the evolution of the aerosol particle mass density function in a control volume for particle deposition due to gravitational settling, thermophoresis, and diffusion. The solutions are for arbitrary initial mass density functions and are applied for an initial lognormal density function. Integration of these solutions provides the suspended mass in the control volume as a function of time. These solutions serve as an exact benchmark to assess the accuracy of numerical methods. For the numerical algorithm used in MELCOR, excellent agreement is obtained for gravitational settling, diffusive deposition, and thermophoretic deposition for the suspended aerosol mass. In all cases, the default number of discrete particle size bins of 10 is shown to converge, with hardly any advantage to using 20 size bins.

Stability of exact solutions of the (2 + 1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with arbitrary nonlinearity parameter κ

In this work, we consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) in 2+1 dimensions with arbitrary nonlinearity exponent κ in the presence of an external confining potential. Exact solutions to the system are constructed, and their stability as we increase the 'mass' (i.e., the L 2 norm) and the nonlinearity parameter κ is explored. Here we observe both theoretically and numerically that the presence of the confining potential leads to wider domains of stability over the parameter space compared to the unconfined case. Our analysis suggests the existence of a stable regime of solutions for all κ as long as their mass is less than a critical value M*(κ). Furthermore, we find that there are two different critical masses, one corresponding to width perturbations and the other one to translational perturbations. The results of Derrick's theorem are also obtained by studying the small amplitude regime of a four-parameter collective coordinate (4CC) approximation. A numerical stability analysis of the NLSE shows that the instability curve M*(κ) versus κ lies below the two curves found by Derrick's theorem and the 4CC approximation. In the absence of the external potential, κ = 1 demarcates the separation between the blowup regime and the stable regime. In this 4CC approximation, for κ < 1, when the mass is above the critical mass for the translational instability, quite complicated motions of the collective coordinates are possible. Energy conservation prevents the blowup of the solution as well as confines the center of the solution to a finite spatial domain. We call this regime the 'frustrated' blowup regime and give some illustrations. In an appendix, we show how to extend these results to arbitrary initial ground state solution data and arbitrary spatial dimension d.

Many-body Green's function approaches to the doped Fröhlich solid: Exact solutions and anomalous mass enhancement

In polar semiconductors and insulators, the Fröhlich interaction between electrons and long-wavelength longitudinal optical phonons induces a many-body renormalization of the carrier effective masses and the appearance of characteristic phonon sidebands in the spectral function, commonly dubbed “polaron satellites.” The simplest model that captures these effects is the Fröhlich model, whereby electrons in a parabolic band interact with a dispersionless longitudinal optical phonon. The Fröhlich model has been employed in a number of seminal papers, from early perturbation-theory approaches to modern diagrammatic Monte Carlo calculations. One limitation of this model is that it focuses on undoped systems, thus ignoring carrier screening and Pauli blocking effects that are present in real experiments on doped samples. Here, to overcome this limitation, we extend the Fröhlich model to the case of doped systems, and we provide exact solutions for the electron spectral function, mass enhancement, and polaron satellites. We perform the analysis using two approaches, namely, Dyson’s equation with the Fan-Migdal self-energy, and the second-order cumulant expansion. We find that these two approaches provide qualitatively different results. In particular, Dyson’s approach yields better quasiparticle masses and worse satellites, while the cumulant approach provides better satellite structures, at the price of worse quasiparticle masses. Both approaches yield an anomalous enhancement of the electron effective mass at finite doping levels, which in turn leads to a breakdown of the quasiparticle picture in a significant portion of the phase diagram.

Exact solutions for the electromagnetic fields of a flying focus

The intensity peak of a “flying” focus travels at a programmable velocity over many Rayleigh ranges while maintaining a near-constant profile. Assessing the extent to which these features can enhance laser-based applications requires an accurate description of the electromagnetic fields. Here we present exact analytical solutions to Maxwell’s equations for the electromagnetic fields of a constant-velocity flying focus, generalized for arbitrary polarization and orbital angular momentum. Furthermore, the approach combines the complex source-point method, which transforms multipole solutions into beam-like solutions, with the Lorentz invariance of Maxwell’s equations. Propagating the fields backward in space reveals the space-time profile that an optical assembly must produce to realize these fields in the laboratory. Comparisons with simpler paraxial solutions provide conditions for their reliable use when modeling a flying focus.

Exact solution of the DeWitt-Brehme-Hobbs equation in copropagating electromagetic and gravitational waves

An accelerated charge interacts with its own electromagnetic field, a phenomenon known as electromagnetic radiation reaction. The DeWitt-Brehme-Hobbs (DWBH) equation describes the motion of a charged mass in the presence of combined electromagnetic and gravitational fields, taking into account electromagnetic radiation-reaction effects. Here, we find the first exact analytical solution of the DWBH equation in the case of a charged mass in the presence of copropagating and otherwise arbitrary electromagnetic and gravitational plane waves. As a consequence of the Penrose limit, the scenario considered here can be seen as a local limit around ultrarelativistic trajectories in a general curved spacetime. Finally, the paradigmatic example of an electromagnetic wave in the presence of a constant-amplitude gravitational wave is worked out explicitly and it is shown how the presence of the gravitational wave can qualitatively change electromagnetic radiation-reaction effects.

Exact solution of the frustrated Potts model with next-nearest-neighbor interactions in one dimension via AI bootstrapping

The one-dimensional (1D) 𝐽 1 −𝐽 2 𝑞-state Potts model is solved exactly for arbitrary 𝑞 by analytically block-diagonalizing the original 𝑞 2 ×𝑞 2 transfer matrix into a simple 2 × 2 maximally symmetric subspace, based on using OpenAI's reasoning model o3-mini-high to exactly solve the 𝑞 = 3 case. Furthermore, by matching relevant subspaces, we map the Potts model onto a simpler effective 1D 𝑞-state Potts model, where 𝐽 2 acts as the nearest-neighbor interaction and 𝐽 1 as an effective magnetic field, nontrivially generalizing a 56-year-old theorem previously limited to the simplest case (𝑞 = 2, the Ising model). Our exact results provide insights to phenomena such as atomic or electronic order stacking in layered materials and the emergence of dome-shaped phases in complex phase diagrams. In conclusion, this work is anticipated to fuel both research in 1D frustrated magnets for recently discovered finite-temperature application potentials and the fast moving topic area of AI in science.

Exact solution of the topological symplectic Kondo problem

The Kondo effect is an archetypical phenomenon in the physics of strongly correlated electron systems. Recent attention has focused on the application of Kondo physics to quantum information science by exploiting overscreened Kondo impurities with residual anyon-like impurity entropy. While this physics was proposed in the fine-tuned multi-channel Kondo setup or in the Majorana-based topological Kondo effect, we here study the Kondo effect with symplectic symmetry Sp(2k) and present details about the implementation which importantly only involves conventional s-wave superconductivity coupled to an array of resonant levels and neither requires perfect channel symmetry nor Majorana fermions. Here we carefully discuss the role of perturbations and show that a global Zeeman drives the system to a 2-channel SU(k) fixed point. Exact results for the residual entropy, specific heat and magnetization are derived using the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz for Sp(2k). This solution not only proves the existence of a quantum critical ground state with anyon-like Hilbert space dimension, but also a particularly weak non-Fermi liquid behavior at criticality. We interpret the weakness of non-analyticities as a manifestation of suppressed density of states at the impurity causing only a very weak connection of putative anyons and conduction electrons. Given this weak connection, the simplicity of the design and the stability of the effect, we conjecture that the symplectic Kondo effect may be particularly suitable for quantum information applications.

Exact solution of two simple non-equilibrium electron-phonon and electron-electron coupled systems: The atomic limit of the Holstein-Hubbard model and the generalized Hatsugai-Komoto model

One of the challenges in many-body physics is determining the effects of phonons on strongly correlated electrons. The difficulty arises from strong correlations at differing energy scales—for band metals, Migdal-Eliashberg theory accurately determines electron-phonon coupling effects due to the absence of vertex corrections, but strongly correlated electrons require a more complex description, and the standard Migdal-Eliashberg approach does not necessarily apply. In this work, we solve for the atomic limit Green's function of the Holstein-Hubbard model with both time-dependent electron-electron and electron-phonon couplings. Then, we examine the photoemission spectra of this model in and out of equilibrium. Next, we use similar methods to exactly solve an extended version of the Hatsugai-Komoto model and examine its behavior in and out of equilibrium. These calculations lead us to propose using the first moment of the photoemission spectra to signal non-equilibrium changes in electron-electron and electron-phonon couplings.

Exact general solutions for cosmological scalar field evolution in a background-dominated expansion

We derive exact general solutions (as opposed to attractor particular solutions) and corresponding first integrals for the evolution of a scalar field $\phi$ in a universe dominated by a background fluid with equation of state parameter wB. In addition to the previously examined linear [V($\phi$)=V 0 $\phi$] and quadratic [V($\phi$)=V 0 $\phi$ 2 ] potentials, we show that exact solutions exist for the power-law potential V($\phi$)=V 0 $\phi$ n with n=4(1+w B )/(1-w B )+2 and n=2(1+w B )/(1-w B ). These correspond to the potentials V($\phi$)=V 0 $\phi$ 6 and V($\phi$)=V 0 $\phi$ 2 for matter domination and V($\phi$)=V 0 $\phi$ 10 and V($\phi$)=V 0 $\phi$ 4 for radiation domination. The $\phi$ 6 and $\phi$ 10 potentials can yield either oscillatory or nonoscillatory evolution, and we use the first integrals to determine how the initial conditions map onto each form of evolution. The exponential potential yields an exact solution for a stiff/kination (w B =1) background. We use this exact solution to derive an analytic expression for the evolution of the equation of state parameter, $w_\phi$, for this case.

Similarity Downselection: Finding the n Most Dissimilar Molecular Conformers for Reference-Free Metabolomics

Computational methods for creating in silico libraries of molecular descriptors (e.g., collision cross sections) are becoming increasingly prevalent due to the limited number of authentic reference materials available for traditional library building. These so-called “reference-free metabolomics” methods require sampling sets of molecular conformers in order to produce high accuracy property predictions. Due to the computational cost of the subsequent calculations for each conformer, there is a need to sample the most relevant subset and avoid repeating calculations on conformers that are nearly identical. The goal of this study is to introduce a heuristic method of finding the most dissimilar conformers from a larger population in order to help speed up reference-free calculation methods and maintain a high property prediction accuracy. Finding the set of the n items most dissimilar from each other out of a larger population becomes increasingly difficult and computationally expensive as either n or the population size grows large. Because there exists a pairwise relationship between each item and all other items in the population, finding the set of the n most dissimilar items is different than simply sorting an array of numbers. For instance, if you have a set of the most dissimilar n = 4 items, one or more of the items from n = 4 might not be in the set n = 5. An exact solution would have to search all possible combinations of size n in the population exhaustively. We present an open-source software called similarity downselection (SDS), written in Python and freely available on GitHub. SDS implements a heuristic algorithm for quickly finding the approximate set(s) of the n most dissimilar items. We benchmark SDS against a Monte Carlo method, which attempts to find the exact solution through repeated random sampling. We show that for SDS to find the set of n most dissimilar conformers, our method is not only orders of magnitude faster, but it is also more accurate than running Monte Carlo for 1,000,000 iterations, each searching for set sizes n = 3–7 out of a population of 50,000. We also benchmark SDS against the exact solution for example small populations, showing that SDS produces a solution close to the exact solution in these instances. Using theoretical approaches, we also demonstrate the constraints of the greedy algorithm and its efficacy as a ratio to the exact solution.

3D Exact Analytical Solutions of Two-fluid Plasma, Magnetohydrodynamics, and Neutral Fluid Equations for the Creation of Ordered Structures as well as Jet-like Flows

The 3D exact analytical solutions of ideal two-fluid plasma, single-fluid plasma, and neutral fluid equations have been found using physically justifiable assumptions. Surprisingly these solutions satisfy all nonlinearities in the systems. It is pointed out that these solutions explain the fundamental mechanism behind the creation of a vast variety of ordered structures in plasmas and fluids. In the limiting case of 2D dependence of fields, the theoretical model for plasma is applied to explain the formation of spicules in the solar chromosphere. It is pointed out that the main contribution of electron (ion) baroclinic vectors is to produce vorticity in the plasma, and that magnetic field generation is coupled with the flow of both electrons and ions.
