Synthesis and structural characterization of the new Zintl phases Ba 3 Cd 2 P 4 and Ba 2 Cd 2 P 3 . Rare example of small gap semiconducting behavior with negative thermopower within the range 300 K-700 K

The new Zintl phases Ba 3 Cd 2 P 4 and Ba 2 Cd 2 P 3 have been synthesized using Pb flux, which allowed for the growth of 4-5 mm large crystals. The structures were determined utilizing single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Both compounds crystalize in the monoclinic crystal system (space group C2/m (No. 12)) and their structures are closely related. The structure of Ba 3 Cd 2 P 4 can be seen as being comprised of divalent Ba atoms and conjoined CdP 4 tetrahedra in the form of [Cd 2 P 4 ] 6- layers. Within the layers, homoatomic P–P bonds are present, which if cleaved, leave two infinite [CdP 3 ] 7- chains running along the crystallographic b-axis. The other structure, that of Ba 2 Cd 2 P 3 , can be rationalized as also having divalent Ba atoms and conjoined CdP4 tetrahedra in the form of [Cd 2 P 3 ] 6- layers. These layers, again, can be visualized as chains that run down the crystallographic b-axis, which are further connected by P-P dimers. Electronic band structure calculations show that each structure has an optimal number of valence electrons, and therefore conform to the Zintl-Klemm concept. Accordingly, the two compounds can be considered small band gap semiconductors, with band gaps of ca. 0.1 eV and 0.6 eV for Ba3Cd2P4 and Ba 2 Cd 2 P 3 , respectively. Electrical resistivity measurements show that Ba3Cd2P4 displays a large resistivity value at room temperature and an experimental band gap of ca. 0.05 eV, which fits reasonably well with the theoretical predictions. Thermopower measurements show that throughout the temperature range 300 K-700 K, Ba 3 Cd 2 P 4 displays a negative Seebeck coefficient. Here, the extremum value of -84 μV is reached at 630 K, suggestive of an n-type semiconductor, a rarity among Zintl phases.

Worldwide surface extremes

Information needed to fabricate, transport, test, and launch space vehicles requires statistical meteorological data for various geographical areas. A brief review of world surface extremes is presented that illustrates the large extremum values that occur in some global areas and compares them with those currently used in space vehicle design.

A note on the variational method of Stokes and DeMarcus for radiative transfer in planetary atmospheres

A generalization of the variational principle of Stokes and DeMarcus (1971) by the construction of two bifunctionals is proposed. The equation of radiative transfer is obtained by imposing the stationary condition on such functionals, and the reflectivity and transmissivity at arbitrary angle are given by their extremum values. Further simplification is possible when trail functions are used that are linear in the variational parameters, in which case the source function derived from the method of Stokes and DeMarcus can give the reflectivity at arbitrary emergent angle to second order. The usefulness and limitations of these variational priinciples are explored with extensive numerical results.

Entropy functional and the holographic attractor mechanism

We provide a field theory interpretation of the attractor mechanism for asymptotically AdS 4 dyonic BPS black holes whose entropy is captured by the supersymmetric index of the twisted ABJM theory at Chern-Simons level one. Here, we holographically compute the renormalized off-shell quantum effective action in the twisted ABJM theory as a function of the supersymmetric fermion masses and the arbitrary vacuum expectation values of the dimension one scalar bilinear operators and show that extremizing the effective action with respect to the vacuum expectation values of the dimension one scalar bilinears is equivalent to the attractor mechanism in the bulk. In fact, we show that the holographic quantum effective action coincides with the entropy functional and, therefore, its value at the extremum reproduces the black hole entropy.

Monotonicity in the averaging process

In this work, we investigate an averaging process that describes how interacting agents approach consensus through binary interactions. In each elementary step, two agents are selected at random and they reach compromise by adopting their opinion average. We show that the fraction of agents with a monotonically decreasing opinion decays as e - αt , and that the exponent is selected as the extremum from a continuous spectrum of possible values. The opinion distribution of monotonic agents is asymmetric, and it becomes self-similar at large times. Furthermore, the tails of the opinion distribution are algebraic, and they are characterized by two distinct and nontrivial exponents. We also explore statistical properties of agents with an opinion strictly above average.

Efficient Jitter Analysis for Spacecraft

Typically in space missions, the science instruments require a specific degree of pointing accuracy as well as dynamical quietness. This dynamical quietness, which is needed to allow the instruments to make measurements (remote sensing applications) or perform other functions, is usually characterized in terms of jitter and stability specifications. In order to insure that the spacecraft meets the requirements of its instruments, several jitter analyses are performed throughout the design phase of the spacecraft and beyond as the models of the spacecraft, its components, and disturbances mature. Each such analysis involves the simulation of the spacecraft and instrument dynamical response to all known disturbance scenarios, followed by the computation of jitter values for each instrument based on the specified jitter time windows. The direct approach for computing jitter values by sweeping maxima and minima throughout the time history may be costly in the computational sense as the size and number of the time histories involved could be quite large. Keeping in mind that typical spacecraft simulation time histories may easily involve hundreds of thousands or millions of points, it is imperative that a jitter analysis algorithm be developed which is more efficient than the direct approach. This paper presents a vectorized algorithm for efficient computation of spacecraft jitter values. The algorithm identifies the extreme points in the time history, which are the points that may dominate the jitter values depending on the location of the jitter window along the time history. The span of influence of each extremum is then computed by the algorithm and used in an efficient and vectorized fashion to obtain the jitter values. The algorithm deals with the multiple jitter windows 2 sequentially, first computing jitter values for the smallest time window, then looping over the remaining time windows until all jitter values are computed. A numerical example is carried out to demonstrate the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed jitter analysis technique.

Applications of matrix derivatives to optimization problems in statistical pattern recognition

A necessary condition for a real valued Frechet differentiable function of a vector variable have an extremum at a vector x sub 0 is that the Frechet derivative vanishes at x sub 0. A relationship between Frechet differentials and matrix derivatives was established that obtains a necessary condition on the matrix derivative at an extrema. These results are applied to various scalar functions of matrix variables which occur in statistical pattern recognition.
