Strong interlayer charge transfer due to exciton condensation in an electrically isolated GaAs quantum well bilayer

We introduce a design of electrically isolated “floating” bilayer GaAs quantum wells (QW), in which application of a large gating voltage controllably and highly reproducibly induces charges that remain trapped in the bilayer after removal of the gating voltage. At smaller gate voltages, the bilayer is fully electrically isolated from external electrodes by thick insulating barriers. This design permits full control of the total and differential densities of two coupled 2D electron systems. The floating bilayer design provides a unique approach for studying systems inaccessible by simple transport measurements. It also provides the ability to measure the charge transfer between the layers, even when the in-plane resistivities of the 2D systems diverge. We measure the capacitance and inter-layer tunneling spectra of the QW bilayer with independent control of the top and bottom layer electron densities. Our measurements display strongly enhanced inter-layer tunneling current at v T =1, a signature of exciton condensation of a strongly interlayer-correlated bilayer system. With fully tunable densities of individual layers, the floating bilayer QW system provides a versatile platform to access previously unavailable information on the quantum phases in electron bilayer systems.

Microfabricated structures with electrical isolation and interconnections

The invention is directed to a microfabricated device. The device includes a substrate that is etched to define mechanical structures at least some of which are anchored laterally to the remainder of the substrate. Electrical isolation at points where mechanical structures are attached to the substrate is provided by filled isolation trenches. Filled trenches may also be used to electrically isolate structure elements from each other at points where mechanical attachment of structure elements is desired. The performance of microelectromechanical devices is improved by 1) having a high-aspect-ratio between vertical and lateral dimensions of the mechanical elements, 2) integrating electronics on the same substrate as the mechanical elements, 3) good electrical isolation among mechanical elements and circuits except where electrical interconnection is desired.

High thermal power density heat transfer apparatus providing electrical isolation at high temperature using heat pipes

This invention is directed to transferring heat from an extremely high temperature source to an electrically isolated lower temperature receiver. The invention is particularly concerned with supplying thermal power to a thermionic converter from a nuclear reactor with electric isolation. Heat from a high temperature heat pipe is transferred through a vacuum or a gap filled with electrically nonconducting gas to a cooler heat pipe. If the receiver requires gratr thermal power density, geometries are used with larger heat pipe areas for transmitting and receiving energy than the area for conducting the heat to the thermionic converter. In this way the heat pipe capability for increasing thermal power densities compensates for the comparative low thermal power densities through the electrically nonconducting gap between the two heat pipes.

Electrical isolation design and electrochemical corrosion in thin-film photovoltaic modules

The development of a proposed wet insulation-resistance qualification test specification for production-line modules is presented. Laboratory research directed toward understanding and eliminating problems associated with electrical isolation of thin-film photovoltaic module circuitry is presented. Test results serve to measure module field life as limited by electrochemical corrosion degradation mechanisms. Current module-level research covering encapsulant voltage withstand capability is also described, and suggestions for improving module electrical isolation are offered.

Optical and electrical properties of proton-implanted p -GaSb for electrical isolation

The effect of proton implantation as isolation implant and subsequent annealing on the optical absorption and electrical resistivity of low-bandgap p -GaSb is reported. The measured transmittance spectra indicates that implantation creates a distribution of energy levels extending into the bandgap. Electrical measurements show that the average sheet resistance of the implanted layer increases only by an order of magnitude from its pre-implantation value at a proton dose of ~10 13 cm -2 followed by 200 °C annealing. It is also shown that annealing reduces the implantation-induced optical absorption while still retaining a high electrical resistivity.

Gas ion laser construction for electrically isolating the pressure gauge thereof

The valve and the pressure gauge of a gas ion laser were electrically insulated from the laser discharge path by connecting them in series with the cathode of the laser. The laser cathode can be grounded and preferably is a cold cathode although a hot cathode may be used instead. The cold cathode was provided with a central aperture to which was connected both the pressure gauge and the gas pressure reservoir through the valve. This will effectively prevent electric discharges from passing either to the pressure gauge or the valve which would otherwise destroy the pressure gauge.

Electrical isolation design of photovoltaic modules

A method was developed for calculating the magnitude and location of the maximum electric field for a family of solar-cell-like shapes. Simple formulas for use by photovoltaic module designers were developed. They provide quantitative information on the effects of the cell shape, cell thickness, and pottant thickness on the electrical stress intensification at the cell edge. A method for calculating the lines of force for three-dimensional electric fields was developed and applied to a geometry of interest to the photovoltaic program.

Empirical testing of an analytical model predicting electrical isolation of photovoltaic models

A major design requirement for photovoltaic modules is that the encapsulation system be capable of withstanding large DC potentials without electrical breakdown. Presented is a simple analytical model which can be used to estimate material thickness to meet this requirement for a candidate encapsulation system or to predict the breakdown voltage of an existing module design. A series of electrical tests to verify the model are described in detail. The results of these verification tests confirmed the utility of the analytical model for preliminary design of photovoltaic modules.

Study of curved glass photovoltaic module and module electrical isolation design requirements

The design of a 1.2 by 2.4 m curved glass superstrate and support clip assembly is presented, along with the results of finite element computer analysis and a glass industry survey conducted to assess the technical and economic feasibility of the concept. Installed costs for four curved glass module array configurations are estimated and compared with cost previously reported for comparable flat glass module configurations. Electrical properties of candidate module encapsulation systems are evaluated along with present industry practice for the design and testing of electrical insulation systems. Electric design requirements for module encapsulation systems are also discussed.

Electrically Isolating Subsystems in SOAC Technologies

Integrated circuit fabrication technology has evolved to the point that it is possible to construct complete systems, including power, data processing, and communications, on a single chip. Such System-on-a-chip (SOAC) technologies can enable drastic reductions in spacecraft size and weight, lowering the cost of missions and presenting new mission opportunities. This paper overviews some key enabling technologies unique to the needs of spacecraft for outer-planet exploration and missions requiring extreme resistance to radiation such as Europa orbiters and Europa Landers. The work is being carried out by Kansas State University (KSU) under direction of the Center for Integrated Space Microsystems (CISM) at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

Electrically Isolating Thermally Coupled Device for Noise Suppression of Circuits in Deep Space

Mixed mode rad hard avionics Systems on a Chip (SoC) designed for deep space applications such as Europa orbiters and Europa Landers will require data isolation circuits to block noise. This paper presents the simulation performance for a novel rad hard SOI CMOS compatible thermal transducer used for on-chip data isolation in SoC. The research presented involves the use of commercially available computer aided design tools to model the transient electrothermal behavior of the transducer. Both one- and two-dimensional analyses of a prototype thermal transducer were performed. Results indicate that thermal-based data isolator technology can pass a data bit in under a microsecond and, as a measurement of feasibility, I(exp 2)C bus specifications can be met.

Double-ended metal halide arc discharge lamp with electrically isolated containment shroud

A double-ended arc discharge lamp includes a sealed, light-transmissive outer jacket, a light-transmissive shroud mounted within the outer jacket and directly supported by the outer jacket, and an arc discharge tube mounted within the shroud. The arc tube is typically a metal halide arc discharge tube. In a preferred embodiment, the shroud includes an outwardly flared portion at each end. The outwardly flared portions space the shroud from the outer jacket and support the shroud within the outer jacket. The outwardly flared portions of the shroud can be affixed to the outer jacket by fusing. The outer jacket can be provided with inwardly extending dimples for locating the shroud with respect to the outer jacket. In another embodiment, the outer jacket includes reduced diameter portions near each end which are attached to the shroud.
