Polarized Structure Function {sigma}LT from {pi}0 p Electroproduction Data in the Resonance Region at 0.4 GeV2 < Q2 < 1.0 GeV2

The first results on the sigma(LT') structure function in exclusive pi(0)p electroproduction at invariant masses of the final state of 1.5 GeV < W < 1.8 GeV and in the range of photon virtualities 0.4 GeV2 < Q(2) < 1.0 GeV2 were obtained from data on beam spin asymmetries and differential cross sections measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. The Legendre moments determined from the sigma(LT') structure function have demonstrated sensitivity to the contributions from the nucleon resonances in the second and third resonance regions. These new data on the beam spin asymmetries in pi(0)p electroproduction extend the opportunities for the extraction of the nucleon resonance electro-excitation amplitudes in the mass range above 1.6 GeV.

Inclusion of $K\Lambda $ electroproduction data in a coupled channel analysis

Exclusive electroproduction reactions provide an access to the structure of excited baryons. To extract electroproduction multipoles encoding this information, the Julich-Bonn-Washington (JBW) analysis framework is extended to the analysis of differential cross sections in KΛ electroproduction. Here this update enlarges the scope of previous coupled-channel analyses of pions and eta mesons, with photoproduction reactions as boundary condition in all analyzed electroproduction reactions. Polarization observables are predicted and compared to recent CLAS data. The comparison shows the relevance of these data to pin down baryon properties.

First CLAS12 Double-Pion (Npp) Electroproduction Analysis

The N* program aims to explore strong interaction dynamics of the three-valence quark distance-dependent structure. The electroproduction and photoproduction studies provide insight into the nucleon resonance structure. One of the primary objectives of N* is to extract the electroexcitation amplitudes, which are crucial in determining the inner structure of various nucleon excitation states and their underlying degrees of freedom. Studying them on the nucleon length scale reveals also parts of the complex nature of the universe and its origin at their most fundamental level. The extraction of these amplitudes is mostly based on the single-pion, and particularly at higher invariant masses W, on the double-pion electroproduction channels, because nucleon resonance dominantly couple to them. CLAS has produced mostly all of the world data on charged double-pion electroproduction in the nucleon resonance region for photon virtualities Q2 up to 5 GeV2. The kinematic range can be extended with CLAS12, which can explore these amplitudes in the still almost unexplored range of Q2 > 5.0 GeV2. This will offer opportunities to understand the resonance structure at distances where the three-bound quark degree of freedom dominates and pave the way towards perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD). This dissertation presents new double-pion electroproduction cross sections in the W range [1.4, 2.10] GeV and the Q2 range [2.0, 8.0] GeV2, using the Run Group A Fall-2018 dataset. This data was taken with the CLAS12 detector in Hall B at Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory (JLab) at an electron beam energy of 10.6 GeV. These cross sections are the basis for the extraction of resonance electroexcitation amplitudes using the phenomenological JLab- Moscow State University (JM) model.

Two Pion Photo- and Electroproduction with CLAS

Exclusive π + π - p photo- and electroproduction data from CLAS have considerably extended the information on the spectrum and structure of nucleon resonances. The data from the π + π - p and Nπ channels have provided results on the electrocouplings of most resonances in the mass region up to 1.8 GeV and at photon virtualities up to 5.0 GeV 2 . The recent CLAS data on π + π - p photoproduction have improved knowledge on the photocouplings of nucleon resonances in the mass range of 1.6 GeV < M N* < 2.0 GeV and on their decays to the πΔ and ρp final hadron states. Analyses of the combined π+π-p photo- and electroproduction data have revealed evidence for the candidate-state N’(1720)3/2 + . The new results on the nucleon resonance spectrum, electroexcitation amplitudes from analysis of the CLAS π + π - p photo- and electroproduction data, and their impact on the exploration of strong QCD are presented.

Exclusive π 0 p electroproduction off protons in the resonance region at photon virtualities 0.4 GeV 2 ≤ Q 2 ≤ 1 GeV 2

The limited electroproduction process e p → e ' p ' π 0 was measured in the range of photon virtualities Q 2 = 0.4 – 1.0 GeV 2 and the invariant mass range of the p π 0 system of W = 1.1 – 1.8 GeV. These kinematics are covered in exclusive π 0 electroproduction off the proton with nearly complete angular coverage in the p π 0 center-of-mass system and with high statistical accuracy. Nearly 36 000 cross-section points were measured, and the structure functions σ T + ε σ L , σ L T , and σ T T , were extracted via fitting the φ π 0 dependence of the cross section. A Legendre polynomial expansion analysis demonstrates the sensitivity of our data to high-lying N * and Δ * resonances with M > 1.6 GeV. As part of a broad effort to determine the electrocouplings of the N * and Δ * resonances using both single- and double-pion electroproduction, this dataset is key for the reliable extraction of the high-lying resonance electrocouplings from the combined isospin analysis of the N π and π + π - p channels.

Coupled-channels analysis of pion and η electroproduction within the Jülich-Bonn-Washington model

Pion and η electroproduction data are jointly analyzed for the first time, up to a center-of-mass energy of 1.6 GeV. The framework is a dynamical coupled-channels model, based on the recent Jülich-Bonn-Washington analysis of pion electroproduction data for the same energy range. Comparisons are made to a number of single-channel η electroproduction fits. By comparing multipoles of comparable fit quality, we find some of these amplitudes are well determined over the near-threshold region, while others will require fits over an extended energy range.

New Baryon State N'(1720)3/2+ from the CLAS pi^+pi^--p Photo- and Electroproduction Data

Combined studies of exclusive meson photo- and electroproduction have extended the capabilities in the search for new excited states of the nucleon, the so called ?missing? resonances. New excited state of the nucleon, N?(1720)3/2+ has been observed in the combined studies of the pi^+pi^-p photo- and electroproduction off protons data measured with the CLAS detector at Jlab. The results on the new baryon state observation will be presented and discussed in the talk. A successful description of the pi^+pi^-p photo- and electroproduction data achieved with independent from photon virtualities (Q^2) mass, total and partial hadronic decay widths of N?(1720)3/2^+ state offers a strong evidence for the existence of this new resonance. Currently, N?(1720)3/2^+ resonance is the only observed new baryon state for which the results on Q^2-evolution of the electroexcitation amplitudes have become available. They offer an insight into the ?missing? resonance structure for the first time. Future analyses of the N?(1720)3/2^+ electroexcitation amplitudes will shed light on the particular structural features of ?missing? resonances which made their observation so challenging for decades

Cross Section Evaluation for Exclusive Channels of K+Λ and K+Σ0 Electroproduction off Protons Using CLAS Detector Data

In this work, a method for evaluating the cross sections of electroproduction of K+Λ0 and K+Σ0 off protons in the region of invariant masses of final hadrons MK + MY <W < 2.65 GeV (MK and MY being the masses of the kaon and hyperon, respectively) and squares of four-momentum transfers of virtual photons, i.e., photon virtualities 0 < Q2 < 5 GeV2, is developed based on experimental data of these exclusive channels’ cross sections measured by the CLAS detector in Hall B at Jefferson Lab. A set of algorithms has been implemented to evaluate the differential cross sections of these channels, along with their statistical and systematic uncertainties. A program was developed for the evaluation of differential cross sections and structure functions using C++ and Python libraries. An interactive website was created for working with the program, enabling the analysis of one-dimensional and two-dimensional dependences of structure functions and differential cross sections. The evaluation of differential cross sections for the K+Λ and K+Σ0 electroproduction channels is necessary for extracting the structure function σLT from the data on the polarization asymmetry of electroproduction reactions of these final states with longitudinally polarized electrons. The obtained results are also important for the development of realistic Monte Carlo event generators in planning future experiments and for evaluating the efficiency of detecting final particles when extracting reaction cross sections from experimental data.

Recoil polarization in 𝐾 + ⁢𝑌 electroproduction in the nucleon resonance region with CLAS12

Hyperon recoil polarization measurements for the exclusive electroproduction of 𝐾 + ⁢Λ and 𝐾 + ⁢Σ 0 final states from an unpolarized proton target have been carried out using the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The measurements at beam energies of 6.535 and 7.546 GeV span the range of four-momentum transfer 𝑄 2 from 0.3 to 4.5GeV 2 and invariant mass 𝑊 from 1.6 to 2.4 GeV, while covering the full center-of-mass angular range of the 𝐾 + . These new Λ polarization observables extend the existing data in a similar kinematic range but from a significantly larger dataset. However, they represent the first electroproduction measurements of this observable for the Σ 0 . These data will allow for better exploration of the reaction mechanism in strangeness production, for further understanding of the spectrum and structure of excited nucleon states that couple to 𝐾⁢𝑌, and for improved insight into the strong interaction in the nonperturbative domain.

Exclusive π + electroproduction off the proton from low to high - t

Background: Measurements of exclusive meson production are a valuable tool in the study of hadronic structure. Specifically, one can discern the relevant degrees of freedom at different distance scales through these studies. Purpose: To study the transition between non-perturbative and perturbative Quantum Chromodyanmics as the square of four momentum transfer to the struck proton, –t, is increased. Method: Cross sections for the 1 H(e,e'π + )n reaction were measured over the –t range of 0.272 to 2.127 GeV 2 with limited azimuthal coverage at fixed beam energy of 4.709 GeV, Q 2 of 2.4 GeV 2 and W of 2.0 GeV at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) Hall C. Results: The –t dependence of the measured π + electroproduction cross section generally agrees with prior data from JLab Halls B and C. The data are consistent with a Regge amplitude based theoretical model, but show poor agreement with a Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) based model. Conclusion: The agreement of cross sections with prior data suggests small contribution from the interference terms, and the confirmation of the change in t-slopes between the low- and high -–t regions previously observed in photoproduction indicates the changing nature of the electroproduction reaction in our kinematic regime.

Electroproduction of the Λ/Σ 0 hyperons at Q 2 ≃ 0.5 (GeV/c) 2 at forward angles

In 2018, the E12-17-003 experiment was conducted at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) to explore the possible existence of an nn⁢Λ state in the reconstructed missing mass distribution from a tritium gas target [K. N. Suzuki et al., Prog. Theor. Exp. Phys. 2022, 013D01 (2022); B. Pandey et al., Phys. Rev. C 105, L051001 (2022)]. As part of this investigation, data were also collected using a gaseous hydrogen target, not only for a precise absolute mass scale calibration but also for the study of Λ/Σ 0 electroproduction. This dataset was acquired at Q 2 ≃ 0.5 (GeV/c) 2 , W = 2.14 GeV, and θ$^{c.m.}_{γK}$ ≃ 8°. It covers forward angles where photoproduction data are scarce and a low-Q 2 region that is of interest for hypernuclear experiments. On the other hand, this kinematic region is at a slightly higher Q 2 than previous hypernuclear experiments, thus providing crucial information for understanding the Q 2 dependence of the differential cross sections for Λ/Σ 0 hyperon electroproduction. Here, this paper reports on the Q 2 dependence of the differential cross section for the e + p → e' + K + + Λ/Σ 0 reaction at 0.2–0.8 (GeV/c) 2 , and provides comparisons with the currently available theoretical models.

Measurement of N* Cross-Sections from Single-Pion Electroproduction at low Q 2

Measurements of nucleon electroexcitation resonance cross-sections give unique insight into the dynamics of the strong interaction and our knowledge of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The analysis of exclusive electroproduction data is an important tool in understanding the structure of the nucleon and its excited states. Exclusive channels give a clear way to extract the desired resonant contributions from non-resonant contributions. A gap in the helicity amplitudes extracted from single-pion cross-section data exists for virtual photon momentum transfers (Q 2 ) in the range of 1- 2 GeV 2 . Using data collected by the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) detector with a beam energy of 4.8 GeV, the reaction channel y*r → nπ + is used in this study to investigate the kinematic region covering W=[1.1,1.82)GeV and Q 2 = [1.1,3.5)GeV 2 . This work expands on the previous kinematic coverage for charged single-pion electroproduction and increases the angular coverage of previously extracted kinematic bins.

Neutral Pion Electroproduction Cross sections from 12 GeV Jefferson Lab for x B > 0 . 3

Nuclear physics aims at understanding structure of the building blocks of the atom, the protons and neutrons in terms of their constituents, the quarks and gluons. Traditionally, this was accomplished through studies of their static properties and the underlying one-dimensional quark and gluon momentum distributions. Over the last few decades, realization has grown that the true study of the proton dynamical structure has to come from more exclusive reactions. These deep exclusive processes describe a subset of unique inelastic processes in which all particles in their final state are detected. Such processes can allow access to Generalized Parton Distributions, or GPDs, a conceptual mechanism that lies at the root of three-dimensional spatial imaging of the proton?s quark-gluon substructure. In particular, photon electroproduction as well as meson electroproduction are two kinds of deep inelastic processes that can allow access to GPDs. Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) is a type of deep inelastic process, and is known as one of the cleanest ways to access GPDs.

Backward-Angle Electroproduction of η′ Mesons off Protons at W = 2.13 GeV and Q 2 = 0.46 (GeV/ c ) 2

The electroproduction of $\eta ^{\prime }$ mesons from a $\mathrm{^{1}H}$ target at $W=\mathrm{2.13~GeV}$, $Q^{2} = 0.46~\left( \mathrm{GeV/}c\right)^{2}$, and $\cos \theta ^{\mathrm{CM}}_{\gamma ^{*}\eta ^{\prime }} \approx -1$ has been experimentally measured. The differential cross section of virtual photoproduction has been obtained as $4.4 \pm 0.8 ~\left( \mathrm{stat.} \right) \pm 0.4 ~\left( \mathrm{sys.} \right)~ \mathrm{nb/sr}$ in the One-Photon-Exchange Approximation. This value is one-sixth of that of real photoproduction at backward angles. A comparison with newly developed isobar model calculations not only shows the validity of the theoretical framewark employed, but also imposes new constraints on coupling strength between the $\eta ^{\prime }p$ final state and nucleon resonances.

Multidimensional measurements of beam single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic charged-kaon electroproduction off protons in the valence region

Measurements of beam single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic electron scattering (SIDIS) with positively charged kaons off protons have been performed with 10.6 and 10.2 GeV incident electron beams using the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. We report an analysis of the electroproduction of positively charged kaons over a large kinematic range of fractional energy, Bjorken 𝑥, transverse momentum, and photon virtualities 𝑄 2 ranging from 1 GeV 2 up to 6 GeV 2 . This is the first published multidimensionally binned CLAS12 measurement of a kaon SIDIS single-spin asymmetry in the valence quark regime. The data provide constraints on the structure function ratio $𝐹^{sin \space𝜙}_{𝐿⁢𝑈}$⁡/$𝐹_{𝑈⁢𝑈}$, where $𝐹^{sin \space𝜙}_{𝐿⁢𝑈}$ is a quantity with a leading twist of twist-3 that can reveal novel aspects of the quark-gluon correlations within the nucleon. The impact of the data on understanding the underlying reaction mechanisms and their kinematic variation is explored using theoretical models for the different contributing twist-3 parton-distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs).

New framework for extracting GPDs from exclusive photon electroproduction

Recently, a new framework for studying generic 2 → 3 hard exclusive reactions, referred to as single-diffractive hard exclusive processes, has been introduced to provide a cleaner separation of the underlying physical mechanisms. In this work, we expand this formalism to the case of exclusive real-photon electroproduction off a nucleon, 𝑒⁡(ℓ) +𝑁⁡(𝑝) →𝑒⁡(ℓ′) +𝑁⁡(𝑝′) + 𝛾⁡(𝑞′), which represents the classical channel for accessing generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in nucleons and nuclei. This extension enables a more systematic and physically transparent formulation of the reaction dynamics, paving the way for improved extractions of GPDs from experimental data as compared to existing approaches.

Jülich-Bonn-Washington model for pion electroproduction multipoles

Pion electroproduction off the proton is analyzed in a new framework based on a general parametrization of transition amplitudes, including constraints from gauge invariance and threshold behavior. Data with energies 1.13 GeV < W < 1.6 GeV and Q 2 below 6 Ge V 2 are included. The model is an extension of the latest Jülich-Bonn solution incorporating constraints from pion-induced and photoproduction data. Here, performing large-scale fits (≈10 5 data) we find a set of solutions with $χ^2_{\text{dof}}$ = 1.69–1.81 which allows us to assess the systematic uncertainty of the approach.
