Adhesion Performance of Solid Film Lubricants on Substrates Cleaned With Environmentally Compliant Cleaners

Solid film adhesion testing was used to determine the effect different environmentally compliant cleaners have on the adhesion properties of solid film lubricants used for several NASA programs. In an action to remove ozone depleting chemicals from aerospace processes, a replacement cleaner must be identified that does not affect the adhesion of solid film lubricants used on flight critical NASA hardware. ASTM D251083 Standard Test Method for Adhesion of Solid Film Lubricants was used to evaluate the cleaners. Two different lubricants - Inlox 88 and Boosterlube - were tested using various commercially available cleaners. Inlox 88 is produced by E/M Corporation and is a liquid oxygen compatible lubricant used in the Space Shuttle Main Engine, and Boosterlube is a new lubricant being implemented for use on the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster. These lubricants were selected because of their specific use on flight critical NASA components. Results of this testing are presented in the paper.

Effective and Environmentally Compliant Cleaner Solstice® Performance Fluid

On January 1, 2015, the United States Environmental Protection Agency identified exemptions on the continued use of the hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC)-225ca and -225cb. As these solvents are commonly used in cleaning and verification of aerospace propulsion systems using liquid and gaseous oxygen, the NESC supported the Agency initiative to identify and characterize acceptable alternate fluids. Honeywell’s Solstice® Performance Fluid (PF), PF-high purity (HP), and PF-HP spray are an effective nonflammable cleaning solution system, with a favorable toxicity profile and low environmental impact. Solstice PF is suitable for electronics, metal, and precision cleaning. It can be used in vapor degreasing equipment and may be dispensed with a propellant to create an aerosol contact cleaner. Solstice PF has been shown to have negligible ozone depletion and a global warming potential of 1. With these characterized environmental and solvency properties, Solstice PF, PF-HP, or PF-HP spray may be an excellent choice for a variety of cleaning applications.

NASA Operational Environment Team (NOET) - NASA's key to environmental technology

NOET is a NASA-wide team which supports the research and development community by sharing information both in person and via a computerized network, assisting in specification and standard revisions, developing cleaner propulsion systems, and exploring environmentally compliant alternatives to current processes. NOET's structure, dissemination of materials, electronic information, EPA compliance, specifications and standards, and environmental research and development are discussed.

NASA Operational Environment Team (NOET): NASA's key to environmental technology

NASA has stepped forward to face the environmental challenge to eliminate the use of Ozone-Layer Depleting Substances (OLDS) and to reduce our Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAP) by 50 percent in 1995. These requirements have been issued by the Clean Air Act, the Montreal Protocol, and various other legislative acts. A proactive group, the NASA Operational Environment Team or NOET, received its charter in April 1992 and was tasked with providing a network through which replacement activities and development experiences can be shared. This is a NASA-wide team which supports the research and development community by sharing information both in person and via a computerized network, assisting in specification and standard revisions, developing cleaner propulsion systems, and exploring environmentally-compliant alternatives to current processes.
