Nernst–Ettingshausen effect in thin Pt and W films at low temperatures

As spin caloritronic measurements become increasingly common techniques for characterizing material properties, it is important to quantify potentially confounding effects. We report measurements of the Nernst–Ettingshausen response from room temperature to 5 K in thin film wires of Pt and W, metals commonly used as inverse spin Hall detectors in spin Seebeck characterization. Johnson–Nyquist noise thermometry is used to assess the temperature change in the metals with heater power at low temperatures, and the thermal path is analyzed via finite-element modeling. The Nernst–Ettingshausen response of W is found to be approximately temperature-independent, while the response of Pt increases at low temperatures. Furthermore, these results are discussed in the context of theoretical expectations and the possible role of magnetic impurities in Pt.

Nernst and Ettingshausen effects in gapped quantum materials

Here, we investigate whether there could exist topological invariants of gapped two-dimensional materials related to dissipationless thermoelectric transport at low temperatures. We give both macroscopic and microscopic arguments showing that thermoelectric transport coefficients vanish in the limit of zero temperature, and thus topological invariants arise only from the electric Hall conductance and the thermal Hall conductance. Our arguments apply to systems with arbitrarily strong interactions. We also show that there is no analog of the Thouless pump for entropy.

Heat pump via charge incompressibility in a collisional magnetized multi-ion plasma

Stratification due to ion-ion friction in a magnetized multiple-ion species plasma is shown to be accompanied by a heat pump effect, identified for the first time here, transferring heat from one ion species to another as well as from one region of space to another. Here, the heat pump is produced via newly identified heating mechanisms associated with charge incompressibility and the Ettingshausen effect. Besides their academic interest, these new effects may have useful applications to plasma technologies that involve rotation or compression.

Thermomagnetic responses of semimetals

Solid-state thermomagnetic modules operating based on the Nernst–Ettingshausen effects are an alternative to conventional solid-state thermoelectric modules. These modules are appropriate for low-temperature applications where the thermoelectric modules are not efficient. Here, we briefly discuss the application, performance, similarities, and differences of thermoelectric and thermomagnetic materials and modules. We review thermomagnetic module design, Nernst coefficient measurement techniques, and theoretical advances, emphasizing the Nernst effect and factors influencing its response in semimetals such as carrier compensation, Fermi surface, mobility, phonon drag, and Berry curvature. The main objective is to summarize the materials design criteria to achieve high thermomagnetic performance to accelerate thermomagnetic materials discovery.

Microscopic formulas for thermoelectric transport coefficients in lattice systems

Here, a macroscopic description of thermoelectric phenomena involves several tensorial transport coefficients. Textbook microscopic Kubo formulas for them are plagued with ambiguities in the definitions of the current operators and the magnetization. We derive a version of these formulas for lattice systems that is free from ambiguities but contains additional terms compared to the textbook results. For symmetric components of thermoelectric tensors, we identify a large class of lattice systems for which the additional terms vanish with a natural choice of the energy current. To eliminate ambiguities in the skew-symmetric components, one needs to interpret them as relative quantities: only their differences for pairs of materials are well-defined.

Thermomagnetic phenomena in the mixed state of high temperature superconductors

Galvano- and thermomagnetic-phenomena in high temperature superconductors, based on kinetic coefficients, are discussed, along with a connection between the electric field and the heat flow in superconductor mixed state. The relationship that determines the transport coefficients of high temperature superconductors in the mixed state based on Seebeck and Nernst effects is developed. It is shown that this relationship is true for a whole transition region of the resistive mixed state of a superconductor. Peltier, Ettingshausen and Righi-Leduc effects associated with heat conductivity as related to high temperature superconductors are also addressed.

Study of certain features of the electronic structure of the ternary alloys Ni2(Mn, Fe) and Ni3(Mn, Co)

The changes in electronic structure related to transport processes occurring during the alloying of he alloy Ni3Mn with iron and cobalt, and the ordering of the ternary alloys thus formed are presented. The Hall effect, the absolute thermal emf, the internal saturation induction, the Nernst-Ettingshausen constant, and the electrical resistivity were measured. Results show a decrease in the contribution of hole sections of the Fermi surface to the transport process occurs together with a considerable increase in the contribution of electron sections. In this case, the mobility of 3 dimensional holes decreases and the mobility of 4s electrons increases considerably.
