Ordinary and exotic mesons in the extended Linear Sigma Model

The extended Linear Sigma Model (eLSM) is a hadronic model based on the global symmetries of QCD and the corresponding explicit, anomalous, and spontaneous breaking patterns. In its basic three-flavor form, its mesonic part contains the dilaton/glueball as well as the nonets of pseudoscalar, scalar, vector, and axial–vector mesons, thus chiral symmetry is linearly realized. In the chiral limit and neglecting the chiral anomaly, only one term – within the dilaton potential – breaks dilatation invariance, and all terms are chirally symmetric. Spontaneous symmetry breaking is implemented by a generalization of the Mexican-hat potential, with explicit symmetry breaking responsible for its tilting. The overall mesonic phenomenology up to ~2 GeV is in agreement with the PDG compilation of masses and partial and total decay widths. The eLSM was enlarged in a straightforward way to include other conventional quark–antiquark nonets (pseudovector and orbitally excited vector mesons, tensor and axial-tensor mesons, radially excited (pseudo)scalar mesons, etc.), as well as two nonets of hybrid mesons, the lightest one with exotic quantum numbers J $\mathscr{PC}$ = 1 -+ not allowed for $\bar{q}q$ objects, such as the resonance π 1 (1600) and the recently discovered η 1 (1855) . In doing so, different types of chiral multiplets are introduced: heterochiral and homochiral multiplets, which differ in the way they transform under chiral transformations. Moreover, besides the scalar glueball that is present from the beginning as dilaton, other glueballs, the tensor, the pseudoscalar and the vector glueballs were coupled to the eLSM: the scalar resonance ƒ 0 (1710) turns out to be mostly gluonic, the tensor glueball couples strongly to vector mesons, and the pseudoscalar glueball couples sizably to $ππη'$ and can be assigned to X (2370) or X (2600). In all cases above, masses and decays can be analyzed allowing for a better understanding of both conventional and non-conventional mesons: whenever data are available, a comparison is performed and, when this is not the case, predictions of decay widths and decay ratios are outlined. The eLSM contains chiral partners on an equal footing and is therefore well suited for studies of chiral symmetry restoration at nonzero temperature and densities: this is done by coupling it to the Polyakov loop. Finally, the QCD phase diagram and the location of the critical endpoint were investigated within this framework.

New insights into the doubly charmed exotic mesons

Abstract Using effective Lagrangians constrained by the heavy quark spin symmetry and chiral symmetry, for the light quarks, we analyze the $$D^0 D^0\pi ^+,$$ D 0 D 0 π + , $$\bar{D}^0D^0\pi ^0$$ D ¯ 0 D 0 π 0 and $$D^0\bar{D}^{*0}$$ D 0 D ¯ ∗ 0 invariant mass spectra. Performing a simultaneous analysis of the doubly charmed and charm-anti-charm states gives further insights into the nature of the $$T^+_{cc}$$ T cc + and $$\chi ^0_{c1}(3872),$$ χ c 1 0 ( 3872 ) , exotic hadrons. It is confirmed that both states should lie below their respective $$DD^*$$ D D ∗ / $$D\bar{D}^*$$ D D ¯ ∗ thresholds. Also, the contributions of the triangle and box diagrams are negligible.

Search for Isoscalar Resonances in yp ¿ wnp AT GLUEX

The GlueX experiment has produced the world?s largest statistics for peripheral photoproduction of mesons with a goal to search for exotic mesons. This document presents results on the search for possible intermediate resonances which decay to ??. Little is known for the states seen in this decay channel such as the ?(1420) and ?(1650). This channel also allows to search for the never seen exotics JPC = 0??, 2+?, and the elusive 2??. The ?, in this reaction, is identified via the ?+???0 decay mode and the ? and ?0 are identified via the decay to 2?. Data from the GlueX Phase I was analyzed. This data was obtained at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility utilizing the GlueX detector and a tagged linearly polarized photon beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target. A model using the expected major wave contributors, 1+? and 1??, shows two structure in the region where the ?(1420) and ?(1650) are expected. A third structure is seen at threshold with the quantum numbers of an h1 resonance, however, more studies are needed to assert the nature of this structure. Instabilities on the m = ±1 were shown to come from mathematical ambiguities. This only occurs between the m = 1 and m = ?1 projections when both reflectivities are present in close amount. Expanding the intensity equation for a single wave allows to extract coefficients that can help describe the data. A tangent study is also presented in this document which consists on a direct fit to the lineshape of an isolated N(1535). This baryonic resonance is well established, but its Breit-Wigner parameters have only been obtained from partial wave analysis. In contrast, this study obtained the Breit-Wigner parameters using a direct fit and finds the value of the width to be 70.5± 9.2 MeV; this is half of the accepted value.

Partial Wave Analysis of the omega pi^- Final State Photoproduced at GlueX

The meson has traditionally been understood as the bound state of a quark and an anti-quark, but there is experimental evidence for exotic meson states, which have properties that cannot be produced by this quark-antiquark model. One candidate for such exotic systems is hybrid meson, predicted by lattice QCD, which includes gluonicexcitation in its wavefunction. One of the prominent decay modes of the lightest predicted exotic hybrid is expected to be b1pi. THis dissertation presernts an analysis of the gamma rho -> omega pi- Delta ++ channel produced at the GlueX experiment, in the mass range where the b1(1235) meson is prominent. An amplitude analysis is performed on the decay of the omega pi- system, in order to extract the resonance parameters of the b-1, as well as analyze the resonant and non-resonant background.

Analysis of Three Body Decays in Quasi-Real Photoproduction

This thesis presents preliminary measurements of the moments of angular distribution for the K?K+ mesonic final state using a quasi-real, linearly polarised photon. Two of the main points of focus for this analysis were the development of the formalism for photoproduced vector-pseudoscalar decay and the tools by which the analysis was carried out. The formalism described how the moments of angular distribution could be extracted from the angular decay variables, and how they related to resonance decays in terms of partial waves. In extracting the moments, it was found that adapted Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods proved to be more effective in terms of extracting results from the data compared to the sole use of gradient descent based fitting algorithms. These measurements are complementary to other decay channels and production mechanisms, with the global aim of probing the existence of exotic mesons. Data from this analysis was taken by the CLAS collaboration at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) by scattering from a liquid hydrogen target using a 10.6 GeV electron. This work was done within the MesonEx program at CLAS12 that aims to map the spectrum of mesons, and in doing so, gain a greater understanding of Quantum ChromoDynamics (QCD) and the strong force.

Photoproduction of K0K0-bar with the GlueX Experiment

In this dissertation, we study photoproduction of K0 ?K 0 through the KSKLp and KSKSp ?nal states with the GlueX Phase-I (GlueX-I) data set. We measure the spin-density matrix elements (SDMEs) and di?erential cross section of ?(1020) ! KSKL to better understand photoproduction of light vector mesons. A mass independent Partial Wave Analysis (PWA) of the KSKL and KSKS meson spectrum below 2 GeV is also undertaken to study the meson spectrum with JPC = even++ and odd??. The ?(1020) di?erential cross section is measured at E = 8:2 ? 8:8 GeV and ?t = 0:15 ? 1:00 GeV2. The di?erential cross section is well described by an exponential decay with slope 4:44?0:01 GeV?2 and the integrated cross section is determined to be 295:7?0:4 nb, only statistical uncertainties are quoted. Both measurements are consistent and far more precise than the previous measurement by Ballam et al. [1]. The ?(1020) SDMEs were measured in nine bins of ?t in the same range. At low ?t, we ?nd the data were consistent with s-channel helicity conservation, SCHC, i. e. the only non-zero SDMEs were ?1 1?1 = ?Im(?2 1?1) = 1=2. At higher ?t, the SDMEs deviate from SCHC and the measurements indicate this is due to natural parity exchange since we observe that the SDMEs are consistent with zero unnatural exchange. We also ?find that the contribution from helicity double-flip amplitudes is consistent with zero. The measured SDMEs are in poor agreement with theoretical predictions put forward by JPAC [35]. These measurements will serve as input to re?ne models of production processes, which will be essential for the interpretation of possible signals of exotic mesons in GlueX. Analysis of the spectrum above the ?(1020) indicates the presence of at least three particles at ? 1:50, ? 1:75, and 2:20 GeV. We employ simple parametrizations of the resonance line shape based on relativistic Breit-Wigner functions considering cases with and without interference. The resonance at ? 1:50 GeV is not identifi?ed as any specifi?c resonance, but could be due to interference between the ?(1450) and !(1420). Our models favor the resonance at ~1:75 GeV as the X(1750) rather than the ?(1680). We ?find that introducing a third Breit-Winger into the models improves the ?t quality with the ?2/ndf going from 1.75 to 1.59 and 1.41 to 1.18 for models without and with interference respectively. A PWA of the KSKL spectrum indicates that the spectrum is consistent with exclusively spin-1 contribution up to ? 1:6 GeV. Above ? 1:6 GeV we ?find evidence for a small spin-3 contribution. We also ?nd that the spectrum predominantly positive reflectivity up to ? 1:6 GeV, after which the spectrum becomes a nearly equal mix of both. The KSKS system shows a rich spectrum with multiple resonance structures but is more statistically limited than the KSKL system. Modelling the line shape we ?find evidence at greater than 10? level in favor of a resonance at ? 1:75 GeV. The model parameters suggest this resonance is the f0(1710). The PWA of the KSKS system was inconclusive. However, using a small set of amplitudes suggests that the spin-2 contribution to the spectrum is primarily in the range 1:2?1:6 GeV, where f2(1270), a2(1320) and f02 (1525) are expected.

STUDY OF THE η'π 0 SYSTEM IN GLUEX

The η'π is an important decay channel for the potentially exotic hybrid meson π 1 (1600) that has been detected in the COMPASS, VES and E852 experiments. These previous experiments used a charged pion beam as a probe. In contrast, the GlueX experiment is designed to search for the exotic hybrid mesons using a linearly polarized photon beam. This thesis project analyzes the η'π 0 system produced in GlueX by the reaction γp → η'π 0 p. After optimizing the event selection to minimize background contributions, a mass independent partial wave analysis is performed in search of an exotic signature. Within the currently available statistical precision, no signal was found.

Particle production by 𝛾−𝛾 interactions in future electron-ion colliders

The particle production in photon-photon (𝛾⁢𝛾) interactions present in electron-ion collisions is investigated. We present calculations for the total cross sections and event rates related to the production of light mesons [𝜂,𝜂′,𝑓 0 and 𝑓 2 ], charmonium [𝜂 𝑐 and 𝜒 𝑐 ], and charmoniumlike [𝑋⁡(3915), 𝑋⁡(3940), 𝑋⁡(4140), and 𝑋⁡(6900)] states, considering the Electron - Ion Collider, Electron - ion collider in China, Large Hadron electron Collider, and Future Circular Collider - electron hadron energies. Our predictions demonstrate that experimental studies of these processes are feasible and useful to constrain the properties of light mesons and quarkonium states and shed some light on the configuration of the considered charmoniumlike states.

Exploring Photoproduced $\eta^{(}{'^{)}} \pi^{0}$ Systems in the Search for Exotic Hadrons at GlueX

Physicists have long been captivated by the spectrum of hadrons, aiming to better comprehend the fundamental building blocks of matter. While various experiments have laid the foundation for this spectrum, Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics has revealed new states with forbidden JPC values. This has challenged the constituent quark model, suggesting spin-exotic hybrid mesons that could reshape our understanding of hadronic structure and quark-gluon interactions through gluonic excitations. The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has played a pivotal role in this pursuit, with its efforts centered on analyzing photoproduction data. In order to investigate the lightest predicted exotic state with JPC=1−+ , known as the π1(1600) meson, significant attention has been directed towards both ηπ0 and η′π0 systems. Detailed ongoing amplitude analysis studies of γp→η(′)π0p , leveraging the polarization of the photon beam at the GlueX experiment will be highlighted. Furthermore, first studies on the moments of angular distributions for these channels will also be shown, along with the differential cross section results for the a2(1320) meson. These results aid in identifying the dominant production mechanisms and offer valuable insights into complex hadronic interactions. Ultimately, this contributes to the ongoing search for and future identification of exotic hybrid meson candidates.

Dynamical coupled-channel models for hadron dynamics

Dynamical coupled-channel (DCC) approaches parametrize the interactions and dynamics of two and more hadrons and their response to different electroweak probes. The inclusion of unitarity, three-body channels, and other properties from scattering theory allows for a reliable extraction of resonance spectra and their properties from data. Here, we review the formalism and application of the ANL-Osaka, the Juelich-Bonn-Washington, and other DCC approaches in the context of light baryon resonances from meson, (virtual) photon, and neutrino-induced reactions, as well as production reactions, strange baryons, light mesons, heavy meson systems, exotics, and baryon-baryon interactions. Finally, we also provide a connection of the formalism to study finite-volume spectra obtained in Lattice QCD, and review applications involving modern statistical and machine learning tools.

Born-Oppenheimer potentials for $SU$(3) gauge theory

We develop parametrizations of eight of the lowest Born-Oppenheimer potentials for quarkonium hybrid mesons as functions of the separation r of the static quark and antiquark sources. The parameters are determined by fitting results calculated using pure SU⁡(3) lattice gauge theory. The parametrizations have the correct limiting behavior at small r, where the potentials form multiplets associated with gluelumps. They have the correct limiting behavior at large r, where the potentials form multiplets associated with excitations of a relativistic string. There is a narrow avoided crossing in the small-r region between two potentials with the same Born-Oppenheimer quantum numbers.

X Y Z spectroscopy at electron-hadron facilities. III. Semi-inclusive processes with vector exchange

Inclusive production processes will be important for the first observations of X Y Z states at new generation electron-hadron colliders, as they generally benefit from larger cross sections than their exclusive counterparts. We make predictions of semi-inclusive photoproduction of the χ c 1 ( 1 P ) and X ( 3872 ) , whose peripheral production is assumed to be dominated by vector exchanges. We validate the applicability of vector meson dominance in the axial-vector charmonium sector and calculate production rates at center-of-mass energies relevant for future experimental facilities. We find the semi-inclusive cross sections near the threshold to be enhanced by a factor of ∼ 2 – 3 compared to the exclusive reaction and well-suited for a first observation in photoproduction. Analysis of Unpolarised p+p¿ Photoproduction with the GlueX Experiment

This thesis presents measurements of spin-density matrix elements in unpolarised p+p? photoproduction on a proton target. The dominant resonance contribution to the dipion system is the r(770) meson. Due to the large production cross section for this resonance, a valid comparison can be made between the obtained final results and r(770) spin-density matrix elements measured previously with other experiments. The measurement was performed over the 3:0 ? 11:6 GeV beam energy regime, which is a more extensive energy range than has ever been studied previously for the r(770). Results were obtained by analysing data from the GlueX experiment based at Jefferson Lab. Extended maximum likelihood fits were applied to extract three spin-density matrix elements using Markov chain Monte Carlo based parameter estimations. This was performed using various binning configurations to probe the energy, mass, and four-momentum transfer dependence of the determined physics observables. Spin-density matrix elements are shown to be consistent with the model of s-channel helicity conservation at low ?t. The effects of pomeron and f2 exchanges are clearly visible in the energy dependence of the measured observables. These observations provide valuable insights into the relative strengths of both processes as a function of the photon energy, and may enable theorists to disentangle the f2=P coupling ratio. Spin-density matrix elements are seen to be highly dependent on the reconstructed resonance mass. This observation is likely to be a result of non-resonant S-wave background processes, and emphasises the need for a more detailed model of the p+p? angular distribution that considers all of the competing angular momentum components that contribute to the measured final state. The statistical precision of measurements performed for this thesis surpass what was achievable in previous studies of the r(770) by several orders of magnitude. Studies of the energy and four-momentum transfer dependence, and insights into the effects of non r(770) background contributions provide valuable input for production models. This will help inform the choice of wave-sets used for partial wave analyses, supporting GlueX in its search for exotic hybrid meson states.

Binding energy of the 𝑇 𝑏⁢𝑏 tetraquark from lattice QCD with relativistic and nonrelativistic heavy-quark actions

We present a new determination of the $b\bar{b}$𝑢⁢𝑑 (𝐽 𝑃 = 1 + , 𝐼 = 0) tetraquark binding energy using lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) with domain-wall light quarks and a nonperturbatively tuned three-parameter anisotropic-clover “relativistic” action for the 𝑏 quarks. We also perform a direct comparison with a reanalysis of data generated in prior work using a lattice-nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) action for the 𝑏 quarks and otherwise identical parameters. Using the new data with relativistic 𝑏 quarks from seven different ensembles with multiple lattice spacings and pion masses, we perform combined chiral and continuum extrapolations and obtain (𝑚 𝑇 𝑏⁢𝑏 −𝑚 𝐵 −𝑚 𝐵* ) RHQ =(−76 ±23) MeV. For the NRQCD data from five ensembles, we perform chiral-only extrapolations and obtain (𝑚 𝑇 𝑏⁢𝑏 −𝑚 𝐵 −𝑚 𝐵* ) NRQCD = (−74 ±17 ±10) MeV. The lower magnitude of the results obtained here, compared to the original analysis in [Phys. Rev. D 100, 014503 (2019)], is due to the use of the symmetric parts of the correlation matrices with local four-quark operators only.
