The Micrometeoroid Satellite Explorer XIII (1961 CHI)

Papers on the spacecraft, experiments, telemeter, and power supply systems, as well as the launch vehicle, for the Explorer XIII micrometeoroid satellite are presented. In addition to the major contributions from the Langley Research Center, two papers from the Goddard Space Flight Center are included. The preflight test program and results are discussed. Ascent flight data and orbital performance are also presented. Finally, separate sections describe the aims of the experiments, discuss the design development, construction, and performance of the apparatus used, and report the results.

Pressurized-Cell Experiment

Pressurized-cell detectors were developed and constructed at the Langley Research Center to obtain a direct measurement of the micrometeoroid puncture hazard to thin structural material. A total of 160 detectors were mounted around the periphery of the rocket motor used on the Explorer XIII satellite. (See fig. IX-1.) Material thicknesses of 0.001, 0.0015, 0.002, 0.0025, and 0.005 inch were used on the detectors. The exposed surface of the test material of each detector was 21.8 square inches and the total exposed surface of the 160 detectors was 24.2 square feet. The average weight of the detectors was 68 grams.

Test Program

A test program was set up early in the Explorer XIII program to simulate as nearly as possible all expected environmental conditions to which the spacecraft would be subjected during the ascending phase of the trajectory and while in orbit. These tests included spin, acceleration, thermal-vacuum, vibration, and shock. Functional tests were performed on individual modules of the telemeter system. The test procedure started with breadboard construction of telemeter components. Circuits were evaluated in this phase, and components chosen for prototype construction. Prior to the prototype environmental tests, it was found desirable to construct a mock-up structure for preliminary evaluation of the spacecraft hardware.

Thermal Design

An essential phase of the Explorer XIII development was a thermal study and design to provide an acceptable temperature environment for the electronics components and external surfaces of the satellite during ascent and in orbit. It was necessary to establish by preflight analysis and tests that tolerable temperatures could be maintained in three regimes of flight. In the first regime (from launch until release of the heat shield) the satellite was subjected to radiative and conductive heat from the shield. In the second regime, after release of the shield at 350,000 feet, the satellite was heated by free molecular flow. In the third regime - the orbit phase - it was necessary that temperatures within limits for a 1-year lifetime be established. In addition to these three regimes, a study was made to investigate the effect of elevated rocket-motor temperatures during launch and after burnout. This chapter will deal with some pertinent preflight estimates and correlation of these estimates with flight data.

Copper-Wire-Card Detectors

Card Design - Each copper-wire-card detector consisted of a winding of fine wire mounted to a 1.45- by 7 .00-inch rectangular card. Two wire sizes were used - 2-mil and 3-mil (fourteen 2-mil cards and thirty-two 3-mil cards). The total exposed effective area was about 1.2 square feet (0.11 square meters). A sketch of a detector is shown in figure X-1. These detectors are similar to the detectors flown on previous satellites. Quadrant Design - The 36 cards are arranged in four groups of 12 cards each with four pairs of 3-mil cards in parallel and four single 2-mil cards in parallel. Each group is mounted on a fiber-glass support that can readily be removed from the payload for repairs or replacements with appropriate spares. Individual cards can be replaced readily if necessary. The assembly of the quadrants is shown in figure II-2. Temperature-Balance Experiment - The grids for the temperature-balance experiment were wound with insulated wire. The thermal balance of such a winding has been examined under conditions approximating flight environment. One card of 3-mil wire with a thermistor attached was enclosed in a bell jar and exposed to the sun after evacuation. External radiation was reduced by shading the bell jar except for a window which allowed the sun's rays to strike the winding. The temperature of the thermistor was recorded at intervals. Figure X-2 shows that the temperature does not rise beyond 65° C in 20 minutes of continuous exposure to the sun. Complementary tests made by Dr. Roger E. Gaumer of Lockheed Aircraft Corp. give a ratio of absorptivity to emissivity of 1 for this type of enamel insulated wire. Compensation for Resistance Changes - Temperatures at the wire-card surfaces were expected to extend from -10° C to a maximum of 60° C. Since copper has a thermal coefficient of resistance of 0.33 percent per °C, the resistance of the wire would change 22 percent and a compensator had to be provided. A 100-ohm thermistor with a negative coefficient of -3-9 percent per °C was selected, wired in parallel with a 300-ohm fixed resistor and installed in series with each 2-mil card and with each pair of 3-mil cards. The effective resistance of 2-mil and 3-mil compensated cards is shown in figure X-3 for various temperatures and compared with the resistance of uncompensated copper. The increase in resistance from 20° C to 60° C is 12 ohms or 2.7 percent. Below 20° C the effective resistance also increases and the curve is similar to that obtained for high temperatures.

Remote Guidance of a Mothership-Daughtership Formation for Asteroid Exploration

This work presents an application of Model Predictive Control to maintain long-term stability for a three-satellite formation around the asteroid Apophis via remote guidance. The mothership and two daughterships perform tomographic characterization with a bistatic radar. The mothership estimates the states of all three spacecraft and determines the necessary control to maintain the desired antipodal daughtership states. An Extended Kalman Filter estimates the mothership states. A Batch Least Squares algorithm estimates the daughtership states and performs maneuver reconstruction for the mothership-administered thrust commands under thruster and gravitational uncertainty. The formulation maintains the antipodal angle with growing instability amidst these uncertainties.

Pioneer Odyssey

The success of Pioneer 11 in repeating an encounter with the giant planet Jupiter and producing unique images of the north polar regions of the planet necessitated an updating of SP-349. Additional material has been added to the descriptive material about the flight of the spacecraft in Chapter 5. The following chapter, describing the results of the two missions, has been completely updated in the light of further interpretations of the Pioneer 10 data coupled with the new data from Pioneer 11. An additional Chapter 9 has been added to provide a selection of the better images obtained by Pioneer 11. This chapter also includes images of the four Galilean satellites. The bibliography has been updated to include scientific papers published since the original edition.

Examination of Regional Trends in Low Level Cloud Properties Found in the Aqua-MODIS Satellite Record

Clouds have a pronounced influence on the Earth?s climate. Relative to cloud free conditions, they cool the planet by increasing the amount of solar radiation reflected back to space and reducing the amount of sunlight reaching the surface, but they warm the planet by decreasing the amount of thermal infrared radiation escaping to space and increasing the amount reaching the surface (a greenhouse effect). The global mean net cloud radiative effect (CRE) is about -20 W/m2, a cooling effect at both the top-ofatmosphere and surface. Given the magnitude of CRE?s, it is expected that changes in cloud properties could be a significant factor in climate change due to anthropogenic forcing?s, yet cloud feedbacks are not well known and remain one of the largest uncertainties in climate prediction. This paper explores relationships between coincident observations of atmospheric aerosols, clouds and radiation derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and from the Clouds and the Earth?s Radiant Energy System (CERES) instruments on the Aqua satellite. We investigate several interesting regional trends that have emerged in the nearly 18-year satellite record that suggest correlation between changes in low-level cloud properties and changes in aerosol optical depth that may be associated with changes in pollution emissions and possibly with other factors. MERRA reanalysis of meteorological conditions and aerosol particulate species are investigated to help better understand the potential mechanisms responsible for the observed cloud property trends. Finally, we analyze a new CERES flux by cloud type dataset in order to try and isolate the associated trends in low-level cloud radiative effects. It is anticipated that this study using long-term observations of clouds, aerosols and radiative fluxes combined with model reanalysis data will contribute to an improved understanding of cloud climate feedbacks.

Nickel cadmium battery operations and performance

The Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS), Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO), Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), and Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) spacecraft are operated from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, Maryland. On-board power subsystems for each satellite employ NASA Standard 50 Ampere-hour (Ah) nickel-cadmium batteries in a parallel configuration. To date, these batteries have exhibited degradation over periods from several months (anomalous behavior, UARS and CGRO (MPS-1); to little if any, EUVE) to several years (old age, normal behavior, ERBS). Since the onset of degraded performance, each mission's Flight Operations Team (FOT), under the direction of their cognizant GSFC Project Personnel and Space Power Application Branch's Engineers has closely monitored the battery performance and implemented several charge control schemes in an effort to extend battery life. Various software and hardware solutions have been developed to minimize battery overcharge. Each of the four sections of this paper covers a brief overview of each mission's operational battery management and its associated spacecraft battery performance. Also included are new operational procedures developed on-orbit that may be of special interest to future mission definition and development.

General Purpose Data-Driven System Monitoring for Space Operations

Modern space propulsion and exploration system designs are becoming increasingly sophisticated and complex. Determining the health state of these systems using traditional methods is becoming more difficult as the number of sensors and component interactions grows. Data-driven monitoring techniques have been developed to address these issues by analyzing system operations data to automatically characterize normal system behavior. The Inductive Monitoring System (IMS) is a data-driven system health monitoring software tool that has been successfully applied to several aerospace applications. IMS uses a data mining technique called clustering to analyze archived system data and characterize normal interactions between parameters. This characterization, or model, of nominal operation is stored in a knowledge base that can be used for real-time system monitoring or for analysis of archived events. Ongoing and developing IMS space operations applications include International Space Station flight control, satellite vehicle system health management, launch vehicle ground operations, and fleet supportability. As a common thread of discussion this paper will employ the evolution of the IMS data-driven technique as related to several Integrated Systems Health Management (ISHM) elements. Thematically, the projects listed will be used as case studies. The maturation of IMS via projects where it has been deployed, or is currently being integrated to aid in fault detection will be described. The paper will also explain how IMS can be used to complement a suite of other ISHM tools, providing initial fault detection support for diagnosis and recovery.
