Including 238 U(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) and 239 Pu(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) NIFFTE fission TPC Cross-sections into the Neutron Data Standards Database

The primary purpose of this report is to document how the 238 U/ 235 U and 239 Pu/ 235 U neutron induced fission cross-section ratios, 238 U(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) and 239 Pu(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f), respectively, measured by the NIFFTE fission Time Projection Chamber (fissionTPC) were included in the most recent database (termed GMA) underlying Neutron Data Standards (NDS) evaluations. This report shows and discusses NDS input files, and underlying assumptions regarding the uncertainty estimate and necessary for including these data. This uncertainty estimate and the resulting files were based on information provided by fissionTPC experimentalists, R.J.Casperson, N.S. Bowden, L. Snyder and K.T. Schmitt for the 238 U ratio, and by L. Snyder for the 239 Pu ratio. The fissionTPC data were included twice, by D. Neudecker and V. Pronyaev, to counter-check results and exclude possible mistakes in their inclusion. It is shown in both evaluations that including fissionTPC 239 Pu(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) data points to a lower evaluated 239 Pu(n,f) cross section above 10 MeV than the currently released NDS data. This raises the question whether a part of a previous dataset by Tovesson et al., that was previously rejected above 13 MeV for having low values, should be included in the NDS evaluation after all. The evaluated 238 U(n,f) cross section only changes significantly close to the threshold. The impact on the 235 U(n,f) cross section is minimal. fissionTPC data reduce evaluated uncertainties on both observables by 0–12% of the GMA evaluated uncertainties. However, the currently released NDS data contain in addition to these GMA evaluated uncertainties “Unrecognized Sources of Uncertainties” (USU) of 1.2%. It needs to be further discussed within the NDS project, whether the new fissionTPC data should also reduce USU.

Measurement of the dependence of the hadron production fraction ratio $f_\mathrm{s} / f_\mathrm{u}$ and $f_\mathrm{d} / f_ \mathrm{u}$ on B meson kinematic variables in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The dependence of the ratio between the B$_\mathrm{s}^0$ and B$^+$ hadron production fractions, $f_\mathrm{s} / f_\mathrm{u}$, on the transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) and rapidity of the B mesons is studied using the decay channels B$_\mathrm{s}^0$$\to$ J$/\psi\,\phi$ and B$^+$$\to$ J$/\psi$ K$^+$. The analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 61.6 fb$^{-1}$. The $f_\mathrm{s} / f_\mathrm{u}$ ratio is observed to depend on the B $p_\mathrm{T}$ and to be consistent with becoming asymptotically constant at large $p_\mathrm{T}$. No rapidity dependence is observed. The ratio of the B$^0$ to B$^+$ hadron production fractions, $f_\mathrm{d} / f_\mathrm{u}$, measured using the B$^0$$\to$ J$/\psi$ K$^{*0}$ decay channel, is found to be consistent with unity and independent of $p_\mathrm{T}$ and rapidity, as expected from isospin invariance.

Synthesis, structure, and electrochemical properties of [LNi(R f )(C 4 F 8 )] - and [LNi(R f ) 3 ] - complexes

The new anionic nickelate complexes [(MeCN)Ni(C 4 F 8 )(CF 3 )] -, [(MeCN)Ni(C 4 F 8 )(C 2 F 5 )] - , [(IMes)Ni(C 4 F 8 )(CF 3 )] - , [(IMes)Ni(CF 3 ) 3 ] - (IMes = 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene), and [(F-NHC)Ni(Rf) 3 ] - (F-NHC = 1,3-bis(2,4-F2Ph), 2,4,6-F 3 Ph- or 3,4,5-F 3 Ph)imidazol-2-ylidene; (R f = CF 3 or C 2 F 5 ) were synthesized and structurally characterized. The electrochemical properties of all new compounds were revealed by cyclic voltammetry studies and compared to the known CF 3 analogue [(MeCN)Ni(CF 3 ) 3 ] -. The IMes-coordinated complexes exhibited initial oxidation events that were well-separated from a second oxidation process in the cyclic voltammograms. The complexes containing F-substituted NHC ligands [(F-NHC)Ni(CF 3 ) 3 ] - are structurally quite similar to the IMes derivative and reveal also two separated oxidation waves in their cyclic voltammograms. The absolute potentials as well as the separation between the two waves vary with the substitution pattern, suggesting that the NHC ligand environment (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) is an interesting platform for the development of new redox-triggered reactions that release trifluoromethyl and perfluoroalkyl radicals upon oxidation.

Measurements of the 239 Pu(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) and 238 U(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) Cross-Section Ratios Using Quasi-Monoenergetic Neutron Beams

Neutron-induced fission cross-section ratio measurements were carried out at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) over multiple experiment campaigns from 2021-2023. The total beam time for these measurements across all the experimental campaigns was approximately three weeks. This work was intended to serve as an independent validation of the fissionTPC cross-section ratio measurements. In contrast to the white spectrum neutron source and time-projection chamber utilized in the fissionTPC, these measurements utilized pulsed, quasi-monoenergetic neutron beams and fission ionization chambers. Therefore, this work has different sources of systematic error and can be used as a complementary measurement. In this report we describe our fission cross-section ratio measurements, analysis, results and provide a detailed uncertainty budget.

Study of the f 0 ( 980 ) and f 0 ( 500 ) Scalar Mesons through the Decay D s + → π + π − e + ν e

Using e + e − collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.33 fb − 1 recorded by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV, we present an analysis of the decay D s + → π + π − e + ν e , where the D s + is produced via the process e + e − → D s * ± D s ∓ . We observe the f 0 ( 980 ) in the π + π − system and the branching fraction of the decay D s + → f 0 ( 980 ) e + ν e with f 0 ( 980 ) → π + π − measured to be ( 1.72 ± 0.1 3 stat ± 0.1 0 syst ) × 10 − 3 , where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The dynamics of the D s + → f 0 ( 980 ) e + ν e decay are studied with the simple pole parametrization of the hadronic form factor and the Flatté formula describing the f 0 ( 980 ) in the differential decay rate, and the product of the form factor f + f 0 ( 0 ) and the c → s Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element | V c s | is determined for the first time to be f + f 0 ( 0 ) | V c s | = 0.504 ± 0.01 7 stat ± 0.03 5 syst . Furthermore, the decay D s + → f 0 ( 500 ) e + ν e is searched for the first time but no signal is found. The upper limit on the branching fraction of D s + → f 0 ( 500 ) e + ν e , f 0 ( 500 ) → π + π − decay is set to be 3.3 × 10 − 4 at 90% confidence level. Changes within the central stalk of E. coli F 1 F o ATP synthase observed after addition of ATP

F 1 F o ATP synthase functions as a biological generator and makes a major contribution to cellular energy production. Proton flow generates rotation in the F o motor that is transferred to the F 1 motor to catalyze ATP production, with flexible F 1 /F o coupling required for efficient catalysis. F 1 F o ATP synthase can also operate in reverse, hydrolyzing ATP and pumping protons, and in bacteria this function can be regulated by an inhibitory ε subunit. Here we present cryo-EM data showing E. coli F 1 F o ATP synthase in different rotational and inhibited sub-states, observed following incubation with 10 mM MgATP. Our structures demonstrate how structural transitions within the inhibitory ε subunit induce torsional movement in the central stalk, thereby enabling its rotation within the F ο motor. This highlights the importance of the central rotor for flexible coupling of the F 1 and F o motors and provides further insight into the regulatory mechanism mediated by subunit ε.

Photoproduction of the f 2 ( 1270 ) Meson Using the CLAS Detector

The quark structure of the f 2 ( 1270 ) meson has, for many years, been assumed to be a pure quark-antiquark (q$\bar{q}$) resonance with quantum numbers J PC = 2 ++ . Recently, it was proposed that the f 2 ( 1270 ) is a molecular state made from the attractive interaction of two ρ mesons. Such a state would be expected to decay strongly to final states with charged pions due to the dominant decay ρ → π + π - , whereas decay to two neutral pions would likely be suppressed. Here, we measure for the first time the reaction γp → π 0 π 0 p , using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer detector at Jefferson Lab for incident beam energies between 3.6 and 5.4 GeV. Differential cross sections, dσ/dt , for f 2 ( 1270 ) photoproduction are extracted with good precision due to low backgrounds and are compared to theoretical calculations.

Synthesis and characterization of the dinuclear cobalt(III) complex: [(C 2 F 5 ) 3 Co(μ-F)] 2 2–

Here, reaction of the versatile tris(perfluoroethyl) cobalt(III) precursor [fac-(MeCN) 3 Co(C 2 F 5 ) 3 ] with [NMe 4 ]F and [PPh 4 ]Cl in THF formed the unexpected cobalt(III) bridging fluoride dimer ([(C 2 F 5 ) 3 Co(μ-F)] 2 2– . The new fluoro-organometallic cobalt(III) complex was characterized by NMR and UV-vis spectroscopies, X-ray crystallography, cyclic voltammetry, and by computational methods. In the strongly coordinating solvent MeCN, ([(C 2 F 5 ) 3 Co(μ-F)] 2 2– exhibits dynamic processes on the NMR timescale which are consistent with solvent coordination. However, in the weakly coordinating solvent CH 2 Cl 2 , a more static structure is observed suggesting that the dimer retains its structure in solution state. An electrochemical analysis of ([(C 2 F 5 ) 3 Co(μ-F)] 2 2– was performed, and the data are compared to previously reported cobalt(III) perfluoroethyl complexes.

Physical implications of the extrapolation and statistical bootstrap of nucleon structure function ratios F 2 n F 2 p for mirror nuclei He 3 and H 3

A nuclear physics example of statistical bootstrap is used on the MARATHON nucleon structure function ratio data in the quark momentum fraction regions x B → 0 and x B → 1. The extrapolated F 2 ratio as quark momentum fraction x B → 1 is $\frac{F^n_2}{F^p_2}$ → 0.4 ± 0.05 and this value is compared to theoretical predictions. The extrapolated ratio when x B → 0 favors the simple model of isospin symmetry with the complete dominance of sea quarks at low momentum fraction. At high- x B , the proton quark distribution function ratio d/u is derived from the F 2 ratio and found to be d/u → 1/6. Our extrapolated values for both the $\frac{F^n_2}{F^p_2}$ ratio and the d/u parton distribution function ratio are within uncertainties of perturbative QCD values from quark counting, helicity conservation arguments, and a Dyson-Schwinger equation with a contact interaction model. In addition, it is possible to match the statistical bootstrap value to theoretical predictions by allowing two compatible models to act simultaneously in the nucleon wave function. Finally, one such example is nucleon wave functions composed of a linear combination of a quark-diquark state and a three-valence quark correlated state with coefficients that combine to give the extrapolated F 2 ratio at x B = 1.

Pulsed Infrared Thermography Nondestructive Imaging of SiC-SiC f Composite Cladding Architectures; Understanding the Performance of SiC-SiC f Composite Cladding Architectures with Cr Coating in Normal Operating and Accident Conditions in LWRs and Advanced Reactors

SiC-SiC f composites, consisting of silicon carbide fibers embedded in a silicon carbide matrix, are advanced materials with high thermal conductivity, temperature stability, and resistance to radiation damage. Traditional methods for quality control of fabricated SiC-SiC f composites involve nondestructive evaluation (NDE) with X-ray computed tomography (XCT). However, XCT imaging of typical SiC-SiC f structures for cladding applications can involve several hours. In this project, we investigate an alternative approach to NDE of SiC-SiC f composites that involves rapid (on the order of seconds) imaging with Pulsed infrared thermography (PIT). PIT images of a planar SiC-SiC f specimen show the structure of the surface monolith layer and internal SiC f structures. The capability of PIT imaging in visualizing SiC f structures is qualitatively confirmed by observing similarity in the PIT and X-ray transmission images of the same specimen. Computer vision analysis of defects in the PIT image of the monolith was performed with thresholding followed by topological structural analysis that computed geometric descriptors, including major/minor axes of fitted ellipses, area, perimeter, Feret diameter, circularity, roundness, and solidity.

C/NOFS Satellite Electric Field and Plasma Density Observations of Plasma Instabilities Below the Equatorial F-Peak -- Evidence for Approximately 500 km-Scale Spread-F "Precursor" Waves Driven by Zonal Shear Flow and km-Scale, Narrow-Banded Irregularities

As solar activity has increased, the ionosphere F-peak has been elevated on numerous occasions above the C/NOFS satellite perigee of 400km. In particular, during the month of April, 2011, the satellite consistently journeyed below the F-peak whenever the orbit was in the region of the South Atlantic anomaly after sunset. During these passes, data from the electric field and plasma density probes on the satellite have revealed two types of instabilities which had not previously been observed in the C/NOFS data set (to our knowledge): The first is evidence for 400-500km-scale bottomside "undulations" that appear in the density and electric field data. In one case, these large scale waves are associated with a strong shear in the zonal E x B flow, as evidenced by variations in the meridional (outward) electric fields observed above and below the F-peak. These undulations are devoid of smaller scale structures in the early evening, yet appear at later local times along the same orbit associated with fully-developed spread-F with smaller scale structures. This suggests that they may be precursor waves for spread-F, driven by a collisional shear instability, following ideas advanced previously by researchers using data from the Jicamarca radar. A second new result (for C/NOFS) is the appearance of km-scale irregularities that are a common feature in the electric field and plasma density data that also appear when the satellite is below the F -peak at night. The vector electric field instrument on C/NOFS clearly shows that the electric field component of these waves is strongest in the zonal direction. These waves are strongly correlated with simultaneous observations of plasma density oscillations and appear both with, and without, evidence of larger-scale spread-F depletions. These km-scale, quasi-coherent waves strongly resemble the bottomside, sinusoidal irregularities reported in the Atmosphere Explorer satellite data set by Valladares et al. [JGR, 88, 8025, 1983]. We interpret these new observations in terms of fundamental plasma instabilities associated with the unstable, nighttime equatorial ionosphere.

The Crucial Role of Sb 2 F 10 in the Chemical Synthesis of F 2

The purely chemical synthesis of fluorine is a spectacular reaction which for more than a century had been believed to be impossible. In 1986, it was finally experimentally achieved, but since then this important reaction has not been further studied and its detailed mechanism had been a mystery. The known thermal stability of MnF 4 casts serious doubts on the originally proposed hypothesis that MnF 4 is thermodynamically unstable and decomposes spontaneously to a lower manganese fluoride and F 2 . This apparent discrepancy has now been resolved experimentally and by electronic structure calculations. It is shown that the reductive elimination of F 2 requires a large excess of SbF 5 and occurs in the last reaction step when in the intermediate [SbF 6 ][MnF 2 ][Sb 2 F 11 ] the addition of one more SbF 5 molecule to the [SbF 6 ] - anion generates a second tridentate [Sb 2 F 11 ] - anion. The two tridentate [Sb 2 F 11 ] - anions then provide six fluorine bridges to the Mn atom thereby facilitating the reductive elimination of the two fluorine ligands as F 2 .

Measurements of Total Hemispherical Emissivity of Several Stably Oxidized Nickel-Titanium Carbide Cemented Hard Metals from 600 F to 1,600 F

The total hemispherical emissivity of several nickel-titanium carbide cemented hard metals have been measured over a temperature range from 600 F to l,600 F. A variety of cemented hard metals were obtained from the Kennametal Corporation. A brief discussion of the apparatus employed and the procedures used for this investigation is included. The results of the tests of specimens in the as-received and polished states indicate a nearly constant emissivity for each material tested over the temperature range considered and only slight differences in emissivity values for the different materials. Values obtained on the stably oxidized specimens range from 0.90 to 0.94 at 6000 F and o.88 to 0.92 at 1,600 F for the as-received specimens and from 0.82 to 0.89 at 600 F and 0.85 to 0.87 at 1,600 F for the polished specimens. The surface analysis of the oxidized materials as obtained by X-ray diffraction methods and metallographic techniques are presented as an aid to reproducing the surface on which these measurements were made.

Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Description of 238 U⁡(n,f), 240,242 Pu⁢(n,f), and 237 Np(n,f) Reactions

In nuclei with an odd nucleon number the nonvanishing spin number density is the source of a pseudomagnetic field, which favors the splitting of the nucleon Cooper pairs. Such a pseudomagnetic field is generated always in the dynamics of any nucleus, but its effects on Cooper pairs are significantly enhanced in the dynamic evolution of nuclei with an odd number of nucleons. We present for the first time a microscopic study of the induced fission of the odd neutron compound nuclei 239 U, 241,243 Pu, and the odd proton, odd neutron compound nucleus 238 Np, performed within the time-dependent density functional theory extended to superfluid fermion systems, without any simplifying assumptions, with controlled numerical approximations, and for a very large number of initial conditions. Because of the presence of the unpaired odd nucleon(s), the time-reversal symmetry of the fission compound nucleus is spontaneously broken, an aspect routinely neglected in the most advanced microscopic approaches of the past. The emerging fission fragment properties are quite similar to the properties of fission fragments of neighboring even-even nuclei. The time from saddle-to-scission is often significantly longer in odd-odd or odd-mass nuclei than for even-even nuclei, since systems with unpaired nucleons are easier to excite and the potential energy surfaces of these nuclei have more structure, often resembling a very complicated obstacle course, rather than a more direct evolution of the nuclear shape from the top of the outer fission barrier to the scission configuration. The Pauli blocking approximation, often invoked in the literature, expected to inhibit the fission of nuclei with unpaired nucleons, is surprisingly strongly violated during the fission dynamics.
