A Method for Analyzing the Domain Structure in Magnetic Powder Microparticles

A method for analyzing the domain structure in magnetic powder microparticles based on the Mössbauer effect is proposed. This method has been experimentally verified for gadolinium ferrite-garnet (Gd{sub 3}Fe{sub 5}O{sub 12}) powder particles 40 ± 5 μm in diameter in the vicinity of the magnetic compensation point T{sub cm} = 286 K. It is shown that ferrite particles are single-domain near T{sub cm} and pass to the multidomain state while moving away from T{sub cm}.

Resonant isolator for maser amplifier

An isolator is described for use in a low noise maser amplifier, which provides low loss across a wide bandwidth and which can be constructed at moderate cost. The isolator includes a train of garnet or ferrite elements extending along the length of a microwave channel parallel to the slow wave structure, with the elements being of staggered height, so that the thin elements which are resonant to the microwaves are separated by much thicker elements. The thick garnet or ferrite elements reduce the magnetic flux passing through the thin elements to permit altering of the shape of the thin elements so as to facilitate their fabrication and to provide better isolation with reduced loss, by increasing the thickness of the thin elements and decreasing their length and width.

Interference of Spin Waves in Arrays of Microwaveguides Based on Yttrium-Iron Garnet Films

Effects of propagation and interference of spin waves in an eight-port magnonic structure in the form of a 2 × 2 array of microwaveguides based on yttrium-iron garnet films with microantennas placed at the waveguide ends are studied experimentally and numerically. It is shown that conditions for a constructive and destructive interference of spin waves, which is necessary for creating spin-wave logic devices, can be implemented at output transducers by changing the phase of input signals.

Double-Lattice Magnetoplasmonic Structures Based on BIG and Perforated Gold Films

A method of manufacturing double-lattice magnetoplasmonic crystals with the structure (Au/BIG){sup 2}, in which the plasmon gold lattices are displaced relative to each other by half a period, has been presented. Gold films with thicknesses of about 40 nm have been formed by the ion-beam sputtering–deposition method, while the adhesive properties of the films allow the dimensional etching by a sharp-focused ion beam. It has been shown that the formation of the second plasmon lattice located on top of the 100 nm thick garnet layer allows the preserving of the periodicity of the first Au lattice. However, there is a significant influence of diffusion spreading on the lower lattice material, which leads to a decrease in its density. The dependence of the intensity magnetooptical effect in the geometry on the transmission as a function of the thickness of the upper lattice and presence of an additional layer of Ta{sub 2}O{sub 5} has been studied.

Magnetic Interactions on Oxide Ferromagnet/Ferromagnetic Intermetallide Interface

The magnetic properties of heterostructures consisting of two films are studied. The upper layer involves rare-earth intermetallic nanostructured superlattices consisting of exchange-coupled layers (TbCo{sub 2}/FeCo){sub n} (TCFC), and the lower layer includes either epitaxial manganite La{sub 0.7}Sr{sub 0.3}MnO{sub 3} (LSMO) with optimum strontium doping or an epitaxial film of an yttrium–iron garnet Y{sub 3}Fe{sub 5}O{sub 12} (YIG) with a Bi additive. TCFC is a ferromagnet having high Curie temperature and provides controllable induced magnetic anisotropy. Experimental studies showed that the interlayer interaction of the TCFC/LSMO heterostructure is antiferromagnetic. There was an increase in the FMR line width in the structures due to the flow of a spin current through the interface between two films. There was electric voltage in the TCFC/YIG heterostructure induced in the TCFC intermetallide film, due to an inverse spin Hall effect under ferromagnetic resonance conditions.

Bi-Substituted Iron Garnet Films for Thermomagnetic Recording, Photonics, and Plasmonics: Optimization of Synthesis Conditions Using Scanning Probe Microscopy

We present the results of studies on the optimization of the synthesis of Bi-substituted iron garnet (Bi : IG) films by liquid-phase epitaxy and vacuum deposition followed by crystallization. The effect of the parameter of mismatch between the crystal lattices of the film and the substrate on the functional properties of thin single-crystal high-coercive Bi : IG films is demonstrated. The regime of high-temperature annealing of deposited films was optimized in order to form layers with a high bismuth concentration for magnetophotonic and magnetoplasmonic structures. It was established that annealing of the Bi : IG layer under a SiO{sub 2} layer deposited on top will reduce the roughness of interfaces in multilayer structures.

Experimental Investigation on the Low-Temperature Anomalies in Dysprosium Iron Garnet (DyIG)

The anomalous physical properties of dysprosium iron garnet Dy{sub 3}Fe{sub 5}O{sub 12} or DyIG single crystals have been revisited at low temperatures. This paper presents results of experimental investigation based on specific heat, magnetization, and Faraday rotation measurements. The distinguishing features are the occurrence of two types of anomalies in the temperature dependences of some judicious quantities. The first one coincides with the previous first-order spin reorientation transition at T{sub SR} = 15 K where the iron sublattice magnetization vector M{sub Fe} changes from the <111> axis at high temperature toward the low angular phases below T{sub SR}. The second one takes place around the “low-temperature Belov point” T{sub B} = 42 K, confirming what had already been predicted previously about the paraprocess effect in this ferrimagnet. The results are compared with previous findings and discussed taking into account the coexistence of some concomitant phenomena such the magnetodielectric and Schottky effects which cause anomalies, respectively near T{sub SR} and T{sub B}.

Micromagnetic Modeling of Spin-Wave Excitations in Corrugated YIG Films

In this paper, we study the features of the spin-wave excitation spectrum in a YIG film with a thickness of 0.4 μm and a magnetization of 1.1 kG corrugated due to the periodic relief of the substrate in the form of grooves with a width of 10 μm and a depth of 0.5 μm, with sloping walls, and a period of 20 μm by micromagnetic modeling. Calculations performed for the orientations of the external magnetic field applied in the film plane along (θ = 0) and across (θ = 90°) grooves show that film shape anisotropy leads to quantization of the spectrum and localization of the spin-wave excitations in various parts of the sample. In this case, the spatial distribution of the magnetization amplitude at frequencies in the spectrum at θ = 90° can be characterized by several spatial scales, differing by orders of magnitude. This is explained by the strong inhomogeneity of the ground state on the walls of the grooves at θ = 90°, which leads to the effective excitation of the short-wave part of the spectrum of spin waves in a periodic structure according to the Schlömann mechanism.

Investigation of single crystal ferrite thin films

Materials suitable for use in magnetic bubble domain memories were developed for aerospace applications. Practical techniques for the preparation of such materials in forms required for fabrication of computer memory devices were considered. The materials studied were epitaxial films of various compositions of the gallium-substituted yttrium gadolinium iron garnet system. The major emphasis was to determine their bubble properties and the conditions necessary for growing uncracked, high quality films.

Integrated optical signal processing with magnetostatic waves

Magneto-optical devices based on Bragg diffraction of light by magnetostatic waves (MSW's) offer the potential of large time-bandwidth optical signal processing at microwave frequencies of 1 to 20 GHz and higher. A thin-film integrated-optical configuration, with the interacting MSW and guided-optical wave both propagating in a common ferrite layer, is necessary to avoid shape-factor demagnetization effects. The underlying theory of the MSW-optical interaction is outlined, including the development of expressions for optical diffraction efficiency as a function of MSW power and other relevant parameters. Bradd diffraction of guided-optical waves by transversely-propagating magnetostatic waves and collinear TE/TM mode conversion included by MSW's have been demonstrated in yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin films. Diffraction levels as large as 4% (7 mm interaction length) and a modulation dynamic range of approx 30 dB have been observed. Advantages of these MSW-based devices over the analogous acousto-optical devices include: much greater operating frequencies, tunability of the MSW dispersion relation by varying either the RF frequency or the applied bias magnetic field, simple broad-band MSW transducer structures (e.g., a single stripline), and the potential for very high diffraction efficiencies.

Low damping (111) oriented lithium aluminum ferrite thin films for spin wave applications

Spin wave-based spintronics are an alternative to conventional electronics due to their potential for efficient energy consumption, improved processing speed, and smaller device dimensions. Low damping magnetic insulators provide the medium for efficient propagation of spin waves for information transfer. Here, we have synthesized by pulsed laser deposition epitaxial spinel structure ferrite thin films of Li 0.5 (Al 1.0 Fe 1.5 )O 4 (LAFO) on (111)-oriented MgAl 2 O 4 that support isotropic magnon propagation in the film plane. Our ferromagnetic resonance measurements show low magnetic damping with a typical Gilbert damping parameter of α = 0.006 and weak-spin–orbit coupling with g = 2.02. These films have low effective magnetization, μ o M eff = 20 mT, similar to that of yttrium iron garnet, the gold standard of low loss magnetic insulators. Our findings show that LAFO is a good candidate as a spin wave medium since it can be grown at low temperatures in different crystal orientations.

Variation of the temperature coefficient of collapse field in bismuth-based bubble garnets

An approximation to the collapse-field formula is used to show its dependence on magnetization and wall energy and the effect of additions of Gd, Sm, and Eu on 1-micron Bi:YIG bubble materials. The collapse field, magnetization, and wall energy are fitted to quadratic functions of temperature from -50 to 150 C. It is shown that the addition of the various classes of rare earths reduces the temperature derivative of the collapse field in Bi:YIG. Gd influences the collapse field through the magnetization, Sm affects it through the domain wall energy, and Eu does both. The singular magnetic properties of Eu result in the most nearly constant temperature dependence of the collapse field and the best match to a barium-ferrite bias magnite.

Ultrathin interfacial layer with suppressed room temperature magnetization in magnesium aluminum ferrite thin films

Low-damping magnetic oxide thin films with small thicknesses are essential for efficient insulator spintronic devices, particularly those driven by spin torque effects. Here, we investigate the depth-resolved compositional and magnetic properties of epitaxial spinel MgAl 0.5 Fe 1.5 O 4 (MAFO), which has recently been reported as a promising low-damping insulator. We find that ≈11nm films exhibit optimal Gilbert damping, with a typical damping parameter of 0.001. While defects due to strain relaxation in the bulk of the film contribute to increased damping for large film thickness, the damping increase in thinner films is attributed to the presence of a chemically disordered magnetic dead layer at the film/substrate interface. This interfacial dead layer arises from an Fe-deficient MAFO layer. Notably, this layer is only about one-sixth the thickness of that found at the interface between yttrium iron garnet films and gadolinium gallium garnet substrates, making MAFO an ideal thin-film insulator for spin-torque applications.
