Thermal analysis of the FSP-1 fuel pin irradiation test

Thermal analysis of a pin from the FSP-1 fuels irradiation test has been completed. The purpose of the analysis was to provide predictions of fuel pin temperatures, determine the flow regime within the lithium annulus of the test assembly, and provide a standardized model for a consistent basis of comparison between pins within the test assembly. The calculations have predicted that the pin is operating at slightly above the test design temperatures and that the flow regime within the lithium annulus is a laminar buoyancy driven flow.

Neutronics analysis of Full Size Plate–1 Experiment using MC21

Qualification and testing of Low Enriched Uranium fuel is desired so that it can be used in research reactors instead of High Enriched Uranium. The Full Size Plate - 1 (FSP-1) experiment involves irradiating a low enriched metallic fuel in the Advanced Test Reactor to assist in this general qualification. Prior to irradiation, an in-depth neutronics analysis is needed to ensure the safety requirements of the Advanced Test Reactor are met. To accomplish this, the MC21 software was used to analyze the FSP-1 experiment, which will allow a test run to be performed with this new fuel in the Advanced Test Reactor Critical facility. By verifying and validating the results of the MC21 software with comparisons to other codes and the preliminary irradiation in the Advanced Test Reactor Critical facility, the FSP-1 experiment will be ready to irradiate using the Advanced Test Reactor. This work is concerned with the neutronics analysis of the FSP-1 experiment using the MC21 software.

Thermal Model of Oxide Growth for Full Size Fuel Plate Experiments in the Advanced Test Reactor

The full-size plate number one (FSP-1) irradiation test designed for irradiation testing of plate type fuel is planned to be irradiated in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). This FSP-1 experiment is a non-instrumented drop-in test where aluminum-clad fuel plates are cooled directly by the ATR Primary Coolant System (PCS) water. This experiment is one of a series of experiments being irradiated at ATR for the United States High Performance Research Reactor (USHPRR) program. This fueled experiment contains aluminum-clad fuel full-size plates consisting of monolithic U-10Mo. Previous thermal analyses have been documented concerning oxide growth [1] and thermal safety margins [2] for similar U-10Mo mini plate experiments. This analysis is part of the thermal safety analysis of the experiment to be irradiated in ATR. Departure from nucleate boiling ratio (DNBR) and flow instability ratio (FIR) have been calculated for the flow coastdown condition 2 and the reactivity insertion accident condition-2 (RIA2) transient. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the thermal margin of the fuel meat during a RIA2 transient when oxide has accumulated on the plate surfaces acting as an insulator.
