ATR NEXSHARE Fact Sheet

This fact sheet will provide information for the database of experimental facilities supported by the IAEA as outlined below: NEXSHARE: As part of the Nuclear Harmonization and Standardization Initiative (NHSI), the IAEA proposes to establish a Network for global cooperation and resource sharing for experiments and code validation between experimental facilities, SMRs design organizations, International Organizations and Technical Support Organizations (TSOs). The proposed Network, NEXSHARE, will be done in collaboration with the OECD/NEA. EXPERIMENTAL FACILITY DATABASE: As part of this activity, the IAEA is compiling a database of experimental facilities applicable to SMRs (including water cooled, high temperature gas cooled, molten salt and fast neutron spectrum reactors). This database will also form part of NEXSHARE and will be documented in an IAEA publication.

Combined Heat and Power Technology Fact Sheet Series: District Energy

This fact sheet provides an overview of district energy systems, which are characterized by one or more central plants producing hot water, steam, and/or chilled water, which then flows through a network of insulated pipes to provide hot water, space heating, and/or air conditioning for nearby buildings. District energy systems serve a variety of end-use markets, including downtowns (central business districts), college and university campuses, hospitals and healthcare facilities, airports, military bases, and industrial complexes. By combining loads for multiple buildings, district energy systems create economies of scale that help reduce energy costs and enable the use of high-efficiency technologies such as combined heat and power (CHP).

Combined Heat and Power Technology Fact Sheet Series: Thermal Energy Storage

This fact sheet provides an overview of thermal energy storage (TES) technologies, which heat or cool a storage medium and, when needed, deliver the stored thermal energy to meet heating or cooling needs. TES systems are used in commercial buildings, industrial processes, and district energy installations to deliver stored thermal energy during peak demand periods, thereby reducing peak energy use. TES systems are often integrated with electric or absorption chillers to reduce peak electricity costs and, in the case of new construction, to reduce capital costs by optimizing chiller size. TES technologies can support sites that have either renewable or fossil power generation, including combined heat and power (CHP) installations. With CHP, TES can help optimize equipment size by reducing the required peak CHP thermal capacity and increasing annual CHP usage. TES can also provide turbine inlet cooling for gas turbines used in CHP applications, which increases power production in hot ambient conditions.

Wind Energy Supply Chain Fact Sheet

Wind energy is essential to achieving the Biden Administration’s goals of a 100% clean electricity sector by 2035 and 30 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030. On February 24, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released a deep dive assessment of the land-based and offshore wind supply chains in the United States today, highlighting challenges and opportunities for strengthening these supply chains to help achieve the Administration’s goals and create U.S. jobs and economic opportunity.

TA-55 Plutonium Facility Fact Sheet

At the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), virtually all plutonium operations occur within the Plutonium Facility at Technical Area 55 (TA-55). TA-55 is the nation’s most modern plutonium science and manufacturing facility, and is the only fully operational, full capability plutonium facility in the nation. TA-55 supports a wide range of national security programs that involve: 1) stockpile stewardship. 2) plutonium processing. 3) nuclear materials stabilization. 4) materials disposition. 5) nuclear forensics. 6) nuclear counter-terrorism. 7) nuclear energy. Operations at TA-55 maintain a critical skill base of plutonium expertise across a broad suite of technical capabilities. These capabilities form a center of excellence for actinide science and technology, including world-class manufacturing for solving significant national security challenges.

Radiation Case Strategic Analysis Tool [Fact Sheet]

The LANL Radiation Case Production Planning Tool is an executive-level decision support tool for planning related to the demand and production of radiation cases. The spreadsheet-based tool includes decision factors for stockpile program demand combined with production and infrastructure planning at Y-12. The tool displays graphical comparisons of supply and demand under different scenarios. The tool is based on NNSA planning documents and process analyses from Y12.

Transmission Optimization with Grid Enhancing Technologies Fact Sheet

The Transmission Optimization with Grid Enhancing Technologies (TOGETs) project is funded by the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Electricity (OE) and Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO). Idaho National Laboratory’s TOGET Task force consists of regulatory, utility, system operator, vendor, academic, and other industry participants, who will guide a two-pronged approach to fill in gaps on publicly available knowledge of GETs and conduct a full scale, multi-faceted field exercise. Ultimately the project aims to test, verify, and validate deployed GETs in a transmission system.

Bankhead National Forest Fact Sheet

By the end of 2023, the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility plans to open a new atmospheric observatory in northwestern Alabama. For at least five years, the Bankhead National Forest (BNF) atmospheric observatory will collect data for researchers to learn more about aerosols, clouds, and land-atmosphere interactions in the Southeastern United States. In turn, their studies will lead to improvements in models of the Earth’s climate. A U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) workshop in August 2018 identified the Southeast as a priority region of interest for further study by ARM, a DOE Office of Science user facility that operates fixed-location and mobile observatories worldwide. The Southeast experiences high humidity, frequent convection, and high biogenic emissions. The land surface, boundary layer, vegetation, and aerosol properties across the region are markedly different from those seen at ARM’s long-term observatory in Oklahoma, allowing opportunities to explore new research questions.

Resilient Energy Platform. Fact Sheet: Power Sector Cybersecurity Building Blocks

The Power Sector Cybersecurity Building Blocks, developed through the USAID-NREL Partnership and the Resilient Energy Platform, are designed to help a variety of stakeholders improve security for the electrical grid. This effort grows out of USAID and NREL's discussions with utilities around the world, as well as past cybersecurity assessments performed by NREL on dozens of utilities and government agencies, with a focus on the cybersecurity challenges faced by small and under-resourced utilities. This document outlines eleven building blocks for power sector cyber security. It functions as a guide to help organizations develop a robust, balanced cybersecurity defense program. Individually, each building block represents a cluster of related activities within cybersecurity on which an organization should focus. Using the building blocks, organizations can effectively prioritize their cybersecurity efforts to best thwart a wide range of potential cyberattacks.
